SAN FRANCISCO – (September 7, 2016) Yerba Buena Center for the Arts ( YBCA ) presents a
wide selection of films to suit every audience this October. Offerings include a collection of Andy
Warhol’s rare and restored films including the recently discovered San Diego Surf; four deep
conversations with writer John Berger in documentary film The Seasons in Quincy: Four
Portraits of John Berger featuring Tilda Swinton; and Silver Bullets: An All-Day Werewolf
Marathon presenting flicks such as Teen Wolf and The Wolf Man to celebrate the undercelebrated mythical creature this Halloween weekend.

ANDY WARHOL’S SILVER SCREEN: RARITIES AND RESTORATIONS

Andy Warhol, best known as a painter and socialite, was also a brilliant and deeply influential
filmmaker. His films often documented the “Warhol superstars,” a coterie of talky, tawdry-butglamorous narcissists with extraordinary screen presence. Though passed on, Warhol anticipated
many things about our present day. The rise of the non-celebrity celebrity. The artificial world of social
media. The platform of reality television. And YouTube, the publisher of personal “TV channels”.
San Diego Surf is the spotlight of this Warhol collection, a recently discovered "lost" Warhol film
starring Joe Dallesandro and Taylor Mead. Complementing this major rediscovery, we present a
selection of classic and lesser-known Warhol films including, Outer and Inner Space & Tiger Morse,
My Hustler & Blow Job, The Velvet Underground Tarot Cards, and The Life of Juanita Castro.

SAN DIEGO SURF

Viva and Taylor Mead play a bourgeois couple lusting after buff surfer dudes in one of Warhol’s last
films. San Diego Surf was never finished and sat in a vault for 40 years. Just a month after filming it,
Warhol was shot by Valerie Solanas, which virtually ended his work behind the movie camera. The
Andy Warhol Foundation commissioned longtime Warhol collaborator Paul Morrissey to complete
the editing, based on existing notes and the rough cut. Also starring Joe Dallesandro and Ingrid

OUTER AND INNER SPACE & TIGER MORSE

Outer and Inner Space is one of Warhol’s most intense films, a double-screen projection featuring
Edie Sedgewick in conversation with her own image. Shown with Tiger Morse, in which this
socialite, mod fashion designer, and amphetamine addict delivers a blistering monologue about her
marvelous, party-filled world. (1965/1967, 33/34 min, 16mm)
MY HUSTLER & BLOW JOB
Sunday, October 23, 4 p.m.

The first section of My Hustler shows us an older man discussing “Dial a Hustler” with two
companions, centering on the quality of services expected from a young blonde hustler who's spread
out in front of them under the sun. The second half is a single shot of an experienced gigolo
discussing the ups and down of the business. Followed by the masterpiece of voyeurism Blow Job, a
single shot of a man’s face as he receives the sexual act of the film’s title. (1965 /1964, 67/35 min,
16mm)
THE VELVET UNDERGROUND TAROT CARD
Thursday, October 27, 7:30 p.m.

This rare film kinetically documents each member of The Velvet Underground having their cards read
at a big apartment party. The tarot reader is continually interrupted in her readings by the chaos
created by the characters around her. Though no VU music is heard, this is one of Warhol’s most
fascinating films, which he originally shot as background footage for the VU during their “Exploding
Plastic Inevitable” performances. (1966, 65 min, 16mm)
THE LIFE OF JUANITA CASTRO
Sunday, October 30, 2 p.m.

In one of Warhol’s funniest films, a playwright taunts a group of actors into improvising a ridiculous
yet politically meaningful meditation on Fidel Castro and his family. The cast sit in chairs as if
grouped for a family portrait, repeating lines fed them from the back row. One of the first Warhol films
to use sound and erratic camera movements, it was scripted by avant-garde writer Ronald Tavel and
stars Marie Menken and Elektrah. (1965, 70 min, 16mm)
THE SEASONS IN QUINCY: FOUR PORTRAITS OF JOHN BERGER

John Berger’s TV mini-series and book, Ways of Seeing, completely refocused perceptions of art
and visual culture in the late 20th century. The four episodes that make up the film The Seasons in
Quincy find renowned filmmakers Bartek Dziadosz, Colin MacCabe, Christopher Roth, and Tilda
Swinton in deep conversation with Berger in the Swiss village of Quincy, which Berger calls home.
This remarkable and engaging documentary vividly captures details of life in the village, and brings
the themes and ideas of Ways of Seeing to bear on life and art in the 21st century. (2015, 90 min,

SILVER BULLETS: ALL-DAY WEREWOLF MARATHON

Come howl at the moon with us Halloween weekend during an all-day series spotlighting that
neglected but fearsome horror favorite: the werewolf. Popular culture has overdosed with vampires
and zombies, but werewolves rarely get the props they deserve. One of the most ancient mythical
creatures, werewolves have been fabled and dreaded monsters in numerous cultures throughout the
world for centuries. This all-day series puts werewolves in the spotlight where they belong.

TEEN WOLF

THE WOLF MAN

The Universal horror classic that made this monster infamous. A British nobleman undergoes a

elaborate settings combined with a chilling musical score make The Wolf Man a masterpiece of the
genre. Starring Lon Chaney, Jr., Claude Rains, and Bela Lugosi. (1941, 70 min, 35mm)
GINGER SNAPS

Two suicidal sisters ostracized from their classmates plot revenge against them, only to have their
plan interrupted when one girl is attacked by a rabid wolf. She slowly begins to turn into a werewolf
and, as her desire for blood increases, her sister must find a cure before she turns to murder to
satiate her desire. A superb young female cast and sharp black humor combine to make Ginger
Snaps a scary, subversive variation on the werewolf film. (2000, 108 min, 35mm)
WOLFCOP

growing at an alarming rate. To solve the mystery of his transformation, he’ll have to take on a case
no normal cop would be able to solve, but this half-man, half beast is not just a cop…he’s a
