“Old Glory”
In 1831, as Capt. William
Driver was leaving on a
sea voyage, some friends
gave him a beautiful 24star flag. Seeing it fly in the
breeze for the first time, he
proudly said, “Old Glory!”
Retiring to Nashville in
1837, he took “Old Glory”
with him.
The Civil War began, and
Tennessee seceded from
the Union.There were
those determined to
destroy the flag, but they
could not find it.
Valley Forge Cotton Best Brand
When Union forces
captured Nashville on
February 25, 1862 and
raised a small American
flag over the capital
building, people asked
Captain Driver if “Old
Glory” still existed.

quilt-top unraveled,
onlookers were surprised
to see inside, the original

Lovingly lifting the flag, the
Captain climbed to the
tower of the capital and
replaced the small banner
with “Old Glory.”
The soldiers later adopted
the title “Old Glory” as
their own and repeatedly
told the story of Captain
Driver and his love of the

Residential Flagpoles
For residential applications we offer cost
effective sectional residential grade and
telescoping flagpoles which ship using
standard UPS methods. These poles are
available up to 25ft in height and are made
from light weight aluminum. These poles are
not suitable for use in higher wind speeds.
Telescoping Flagpoles
These residential poles do not have a halyard,
which eliminates the need to replace the
halyard when the rope becomes worn. They
range in height from 15ft. to 20ft. Swivel rings
are used to mount the flag to the pole.
Telescoping poles ship via UPS.
Fiberglass flagpoles can be more expensive,
and are available in white as standard. Silver
and bronze may be available at extra cost.
Fiberglass can be more resistant to weathering
in salty air and generally requires less
maintenance.
Very large flagpoles (over 90 ft) are normally
made of steel.
Location & Wind Speed
The loads created by winds on flags and
flagpoles increase with height above sea level,
and tend to be greater along the shores and in
wide open rural areas. Windspeeds are
generally lower by 10 to 20 mph in built up
areas.
Commercial Grade Sectional
These poles are available in 20ft and 25ft
heights. They offer the strength and durability
of a full commercial grade pole, but they ship
by cheaper standard UPS and FEDEX ground.
Both aluminum and fiberglass sectional poles
are available.
Height
Generally, flagpoles should be a similar height
or a little taller than the surrounding buildings.
In cities, flagpole height may be restricted by
the municipality.

Commercial Grade One Piece Poles
These full strength flagpoles must be shipped
via trucks which can be expensive. Typically
poles 40 ft and taller ship in sections so they
can fit on trucks.

Flag Terms
Most smaller flagpoles are set into concrete
using a ground sleeve so they can be removed
easily. Larger flagpoles are also set into
concrete but with a ground sleeve, as they are
not removable in any case.
★ Prepare a hole in the ground 24” in
diameter and 36” deep.
★ Fill bottom with gravel and sand to a
depth of 6”.
★ Place PVC setting tube into the hole,
and work the bottom into the sand.
★ Plumb and brace tube, then pour
concrete into the hole around the tube
within 1” to 1.5” of top. Be careful to
keep inside of the tube clean and free
of concrete.
★ Re-plumb setting tube before concrete
sets, by temporarily inserting bottom
section of the pole and plumbing it
instead of tube.
★ Allow concrete to cure 24 hours before
installing flag pole.

Assembly
External or internal halyard? External halyards
are standard and cheaper, but the rope is
exposed to the weather and vandalism.
An internal halyard protects the rope.
Rotating trucks enable the flag to fly without
wrapping around the pole.
Hinged base allows flagpole to be lowered
(normally a crane is still required ) for
maintenance of the truck etc.
Shipping
Residential, sectional and telescoping flagpoles
ship by UPS or FEDEX. Commercial flagpoles
up to a total length of 35ft. are normally
manufactured in one piece and need to ship by
truck. Taller flagpoles also ship by truck in
sections, they are fitted with a self-aligning
sleeve which requires no welding and upon
proper assembly will only have a hair line joint.

Yardarm

★ Slide sections together, with the
swedged ends extending upwards into
the next section.
★ The top section is always unswedged;
the second section from the bottom will
always be a swedged section drilled for
the cleat. The remaining sections
complete the flagpole. Attach the cleat
using the screws supplied.
★ Screw the ball-stem (or spindle) tightly
into the top of the truck.
★ Thread the rope (halyard) over the pulley
in the truck and tie each flag snap into
place mid-rope, using a simple
overhand knot. Please see diagram. Always
adjust distance between flag snaps to fit the
size of the flag being flown.
★ Fasten truck to pole, use a screw driver
to tighten the set screws. Make certain
that the pulley in truck is aligned over
cleat.
Optional: Flash Collar
★ Slide collar on bottom of the pole and
temporarily tape it to the pole below the
cleat.
★ Slide bottom of assembled sections
into the PVC setting tube; aligning truck
and cleat in the desired direction.
★ Drop collar down upon foundation, and
caulk into place.
CAUTION: EXTREME CAUTION SHOULD BE
EXERCISED WHEN INSTALLING FLAG
POLES NEAR OVERHEAD POWERLINES OR
IN THE VICINITY OF BURIED CABLES.

Retiring an
American Flag
Worn or damaged
flags should be
retired in a dignified,
respectful manner.
Please Note:
Nylon creates
hazardous gases
when it is burned.
You can recycle a
nylon flag; simply
write the word
“Recycle” on the flag
header before retiring
the flag. Its nylon will
be used to make new
American flags.
