S R L S . O R G SAINT ROSE OF LIMA PARISH 1305 ROYAL AVENUE, SIMI VALLEY, CA 93065 October 12, 2014 Dear friends, On behalf of St. Rose of Lima Parish, St. Rose of Lima School, Serving Those In Need, Inc. and the Simi Valley Knights of Columbus, I would like to thank you for supporting us at our 5th annual Simi Valley Dream Cuisine—“Be True To Our School”—Festival. The proceeds of our evening festival go to the assistance of the needy in our community. As we have done at each festival, this year we are honoring our St. Rose of Lima Grade School—on the occasion of the golden anniversary of her founding—and the Sisters of Notre Dame who established and staffed our school for several years. We want to honor and thank both institutions because they have blessed our communities of faith and our civic communities. I want to thank the generosity of all our vendors—the restaurants, the wineries, the breweries, and dessert companies—who have joined us this evening. In gratitude for their generous donations, I ask you to please support their businesses during the rest of the year. I also want to thank our school parents and staff for arranging and presenting our silent auction. Finally, I want to express my incredible gratitude to Cliff Wirtz and his festival committee for planning and presenting this fabulous festival. I hope that you will enjoy yourselves this evening tasting all the incredible food, wine, beer, and desserts and that you will especially enjoy our shows tonight—“Ronny and the Classics”—a very popular, high-energy, oldies band—and the comical presentation by Vickie Quade—the co-creator of “Late Nite Catechism” who will be customizing her show to honor our Guests of Honor and all of you. May God bless you for your goodness. Gratefully yours, Gratefully yours, Fr. Joseph Shea SIMI VALLEY DREAM CUISINE “BE TRUE TO YOUR SCHOOL” Our Special Thanks to Southern California’s Finest ... Because of your participation and financial support we will be able to do good things. The needs in the community are great and it is through events like this that we can change lives! Tonight we had over 55 restaurants, bakeries and businesses who donated all the delicious food and drink. I would kindly ask you to thank them for their generosity the next time you are in their establishments. One of the charities that will benefit from your participation tonight is Serving Those In Need, Inc. This wonderful charity helps fund the Christian Service program here at St. Rose. Six years ago, Fr. Shea realized this wonderful ministry needed to grow. He gave up the parish garage and enlarged the food pantry by purchasing refrigerators and freezers. The funds given to the Christian Service Program from Serving Those In Need will go a long way in helping those most in need. I would like to thank my friend and our pastor Fr. Joe Shea for bringing the idea of a wine and food festival to our parish and Simi Valley five years ago. This annual event is truly becoming the “go-to” event in Ventura County. His vision, determination and endless enthusiasm have made this event what it is today. A quote from Sheri Dew sums up Fr. Joe pretty well. She says; “True leaders understand that leadership is not about them but about those they serve. It is not about exalting themselves but about lifting others up.” Even while in the hospital last month facing his own mortality, he was more concerned about how his parishioners were than his own health. He is an inspiration to all of us and I thank God that He chose to keep our Fr. Joe around for a while longer. Let’s hope it is a good long while! I would like to thank our team of 300 volunteers, some of whom have worked months planning this event. What a joy it has been for me to work with such a fine group of selfless hard working men, women and their families. I know God will reward you well for the sacrifice of your time and awesome talent! This year we added 8 Gold tables that were sponsored at $1,000 each. They are: Robert Hacker Family, George & Jan Gnesda, Fred Brown Family, Gerry & Pam Riss, Lee & Mary Olson, Ralph & Afra Rogers, John Linscott Sr. and George & Sandy Lemos Family. Thank you all for your support! I invite you all to join us on October 11, 2015 for another fun filled evening of good food, good drink, good friends and fabulous entertainment. May God abundantly bless each of you and your loved ones. Cliff Wirtz 2014 Event Chairman Love God, serve God: everything is in that. -- St. Clare of Assisi Serving Those in Need, Inc. Working in partnership with the St. Rose of Lima Christian Service Program Four years ago this organization was chartered to provide support to the many needy families in the area. In the beginning we serviced 30-35 families per week, this consisted of bags of groceries, used clothing and in many cases personal support to the individual family. Today that support has risen to over 100-115 families per week. During the holidays there are special programs for the families and their children. At Thanksgiving each family is provided with a special meal bag along with a gift card to purchase a turkey to complete their Thanksgiving dinner. At Christmas time there is a childrens’ Christmas Party that is attended by Earl Todd 200-230 children and their parents. Each family receives a canned ham and groceries for their Christmas dinner. But, the highlight of the party is the bags of toys distributed to the families from Santa Claus! I want to thank the St. Rose of Lima Community and the many people that provide support to the needs of the Serving Those In Need. The St. Rose of Lima Christian Service Program thanks you for your support of the poor in our community! “Be True To Your School” Evening Program General Welcome Cliff Wirtz, Event Chairman Silent Auction in the Hall Will continue throughout the evening - Courtesy of our Generous Donors Musical Interlude Guest Dining At Participating Restaurants & Wineries Opening Blessing & Prayer Reverend Joseph Shea, Pastor St. Rose of Lima Church Color Guard & Pledge of Allegiance Venture Crew 9605 – Patrick Quinn President National Anthem Madeline Wirtz Very Special Guest Vickie Quade Enjoy the comedy from the co-creator of Late-Nite Catechism direct from Chicago Introduction of Honored Guests The Sisters of Notre Dame Recognition of Past Principals, Teachers and Staff Musical Entertainment and Dancing Ronny & The Classics Drawing for Raffle Prizes Third Prize, Second Prize, Grand Prize Aloha & Good night…see you next year! Saint Rose of Lima School www.srls.org Adoption Beach AdoptionBeach.com or (805) 527-9392 Ronny and the Classics This versatile quintet puts on a rockin’ boppin’ 50’s & 60’s rock and roll show. With their flashy cool attire, hot moves and multi harmony vocals, they reproduce retro oldies music the way it was meant to be delivered: High energy, high visibility and lots of heart! They feature such rock relics as Elvis Presley’s “Blue Suede Shoes,” Eddie Cochrane’s “Summertime Blues” and Fats Domino’s “Blueberry Hill.” The members of Ronny and the Classics incorporate fantastic impressions, crazy stage antics and the big sound of the rockin oldies to make this a show to remember. Ron “Ronny” Kakebeen is the lead vocalist for the group and has been playing music since he was 14. He started out with the guitar, moved on to the drums, and then learned bass. Glen “Guitarizan” Stiglic, the lead guitarist, started playing at age 8. He plays the guitar along with the steel guitar and a mandolin. Steve “Stix” Jenkins plays the drums and has extensive knowledge of the instrument. He has attended many workshops and classes on drums and is able to play in multiple genres like jazz, rock, country and even heavy metal. Andy “Slick” Horoway is one of the original members of Ronny & The Classics and is keyboard player. He plays a Roland Phantom S-88 and it has a range of instrumental sounds ranging from the piano to the organ, strings, horn and even creates sound effects. Horoway also sings when they perform songs from the Righteous Brothers, and on songs like “Runaround Sue” and “The Wanderer.” All of them have a nickname, which was a really popular thing in bands of the the ’50s and ’60s. “We are a tribute to all the rock ’n’ roll classics,” Kakebeen said. Even their outfits are a tribute to the era. Kakebeen said that they wear either sparkly ’50-’60s outfits or Zoot suits. Kakebeen said he likes the response that they get from the audience, and also the different crowds. St. Rose of Lima is happy to have them at our Simi Valley Dream Cuisine. Late Nite Catechism – Vicki Quade Vicki Quade has written, produced, and appeared in a lot of theater in Chicago, including comedies, bluegrass musicals, improv, and magic. She is best known for co-creating the one-woman show, Late Nite Catechism, which opened in 1993 in Chicago and holds the record for the longest running religious comedy in the city’s history. She also created four other religious comedies: Put the Nuns in Charge!, Sunday School Cinema, Saints & Sinners, and her holiday show, Mother Superior’s Ho-Ho-Holy Night. In 2011, she created a new line of bingo comedies, and originated the role of Mrs. Mary Margaret O’Brien, the head of the archdiocese bingo fundraising department, a no-nonsense church worker! She performs Bible Bingo throughout the year at the Royal George Theatre in Chicago, and Christmas Bingo at the Royal George during the holiday season. She has also performed on tour with Bible Bingo, Christmas Bingo, Movie Bingo, Convent Bingo, and Saints & Sinners Bingo. She worked with WGN radio guys Jerry Agar, Tim Slagle, Dobie Maxwell, and Ken Sevara to create a talk radio parody called You’re On the Air. Some of her other plays include Room for Advancement, Mr. Nanny, and Here Come the Famous Brothers. She also has produced the mentalist Christopher Carter (2002-05), the musical Forever Plaid (2003), the improv comedy Cast on a Hot Tin Roof (2004), and the political spoken word piece Verbatim Verboten (Chicago and off-off-Broadway). As a performer, she appeared in Portraits: Stories of Hope and Survival as part of the Chicago Foundation for Women’s anti-violence campaign: What Will It Take? In habit as a nun she did a guest appearance in Scarrie, the Musical, at the Theatre Building in Chicago, and also chased WGN’s Dean Richards on stage as part of the Dance for Life fundraiser at the Harris Theatre in Chicago’s Millenium Park. She appears frequently in the TV-ReRun series with A Reasonable Facsimile Theater Company (ARFTCO). Vicki grew up in the southwest suburbs of Chicago and started her career in journalism, working for daily newspapers, national magazines, and writing for just about every publication in Chicago. She also spent 10 years as a correspondent for Newsweek. In 1999, she contributed to the Chicago Sun-Times millennium book, 20th Century Chicago: 100 Years, 100 Voices. She also wrote the biography, I Remember Bob Collins, about the WGN-Radio legend who was killed in a plane crash in February 2000. Vicki has three children, Michael, David, and Catherine, who keep her sane. Opolo Vineyards Great people, great food and award winning wines... it’s a happy combination! 805-238-9593 www.opolo.com Saint Rose of Lima School Father McDonagh blessing students on the first day of school at Saint Rose of Lima on September 14, 1964 With joy, the Sisters of Notre Dame congratulate Saint Rose of Lima School on 50 years of excellent Catholic education, and are proud to have been part of its influence in Simi Valley. When Reverend Patrick McDonagh asked if the Sisters of Notre Dame would begin the school in 1964, their response was immediate as they were eager to expand their educational ministry into Ventura County. The school opened on September 14th with four grades and a total of 213 children. Each year another grade was added. The first three sisters were Sister Mary Rose Anthony, Sister Mary Lurana and Sister Mary Joanne. The humorous aspect of this new beginning was that while the new school building was ready, the sisters had no convent to live in! Father McDonough had purchased a home but it was far from ready. So for a while the sisters commuted from West Los Angeles. Closer to the opening of school they stayed in the home of the pastor’s housekeeper. Once in their convent, the St. Rose of Lima Guild made sure the sisters had everything they needed. By 1980 it was clear that a religious education program for children not in the school was needed. Sister Mary Teresita Keliher assumed the role of director of religious education for over ten years. From 1990 to 2002 Sister Mary Rose Anthony continued the program, even as the Sisters of Notre Dame discontinued the operation of the school itself in 1993. The Sisters of Notre Dame wish a blessed future for Saint Rose of Lima School and the Simi Valley Dream Cuisine event.
