Known in France as paperoles, these paper decorations
were made for the home or in convents, traditionally by
enclosed order nuns. The richly decorated and highly symbolic objects collected here were on
display in the exhibition of the same name, held at the Pinacoteca Agnelli in Turin.
The pieces are on loan from private collections including that of American photographer Nan
Goldin, whose unpublished photographs taken especially for the exhibition are contained in
the catalogue.
Despite the humble materials from which they are made paperoles are works of art which
illustrate stories of convents, saints and relics, the history of the Church and its arts from the
17th to the 19th century in Italy, France and Germany.

The project Acrobazie was
conceived by Elisa Fulco in
2004. Its aim was to forge a link
between contemporary art, young
artists and the outsider art from
the Atelier di Pittura Adriano e
Michele, a workshop which was
started in 1996 at the psychiatric
hospital Fatebenefratelli in San
Colombano al Lambro, (MI).
Acrobazie aims to move art from
the city centre to the suburbs and
create a positive attitude toward

Originally conceived as a sculpture made from
Munari’s studies of multiples, Aconà Biconbì
was produced as a game for the first time in
1961 by Danese. Aconà Biconbì is available in
4 different colours (red, blue, white and green).
The visual game “Plus and minus” consists
of 72 cards, each with a different image.
Many of these images (48) have a transparent
background and can be superimposed to make
different, more complex images to stimulate
children’s creativity. By overlapping pictures
of trees we can create a wood. By adding some
rain, the sun or the moon, or some birds, a
passing dog, or whatever, the overall picture can
be continuously changed.
