Northern thrills
We are proud to start 2013 with Oscar, Golden Globe,
BAFTA and César nominations to Kon-Tiki, Headhunters
and Oslo, August 31st.
In 2013, 24 new Norwegian features will be premiered.
Norwegian children’s films are well-known for taking their young
audiences seriously, and they are awarded at festivals worldwide.
It is therefore a pleasure to see that seven of the new films are made
for our youngest audiences. Casper and Emma – Best Friends,
Ploddy the Police Car on the Case and Hocus Pocus, Alfie Atkins
will delight the youngest, and our heroes from Pinchliffe Grand Prix
will have the honour of concluding the Norwegian film year with
Solan & Ludvig – Christmas in Pinchliffe.
2013 will also give cinematic life to two classics of
Norwegian literature. After 115 years and many attempts comes
the first Norwegian-language adaptation of Knut Hamsun’s novel,
Victoria, scripted and directed by Torun Lian. Kon-Tiki directors
Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will start the shooting for
Beatles, from Lars Saabye Christensen’s 1984 novel.

We have great expectations for The Art of Negative
Thinking director Bård Breien, who will launch a very different film
noir, Detective Downs. North director Rune Denstad Langlo shows
another side of himself in the romantic Chasing the Wind, and
Hisham Zaman, who directed the award-winning short, Bawke, is ready
with his feature debut from Kurdistan-Berlin-Oslo, Before Snowfall.
After the Oslo trilogy, Erik Poppe has moved outside Norway to film
A Thousand Times Good Night, a drama starring Juliette Binoche.
In recent years thrillers have been a strong attraction in
Norwegian cinema. Now Insomnia-director Erik Skjoldbjærg will
shortly release Pioneer, a thriller from the beginning of the
Norwegian oil rush, with Headhunters star Aksel Hennie among
the divers 500 metres under sea level. Kon-Tiki actor Pål Sverre
Hagen will play another hero role in Ragnarok, a family-adventure
based on our historical roots.
We are happy to welcome you to a new and exciting
Norwegian film year.

What happens in the last 90 minutes of a human life before they commit murder?
In 90 Minutes we follow Johan who is making a lavish last meal for his wife, Fred who is on
his weekly visit with the kids and Trond who completely has lost control of his use of violence
towards his young wife who just gave birth to a child. Before the irretrievable act of murder
happens, these men are still considered as human beings. 90 Minutes don’t try to give any
answers or to find psychological explanations, but simply to follow these men’s perspective
and stay with them and share the minutes just before it’s too late.

When a canoeist by coincidence finds Janne in the forest, she is extremely weak and two
dead men lie beside her.
The Almost Man is Henrik, a 35 year old man who still parties with his high-school buddies
like they were still in their 20s. His mother cares for him like he’s still a child. And he’s in a
relationship that’s based on goofing around. Now, his girlfriend Tone is pregnant and Henrik
has to take a serious job, move into a conform duplex, calm down the partying, and start
behaving like a father to be – like an adult. But as Henrik feels the pressure to mature, and to
do it quickly, his frustrations surface in unforeseen ways.

Company Orheim tells the story of teenager Jarle and his parents struggling to live under
the same roof in Stavanger, Norway, during the mid- 1980s. The members of the Orheim
family all have their hopes and dreams, but find it hard to cope with everyday life. Jarle finds
his escape through music, political activism and chasing girls, but standing up for himself at
home is a battle still to be fought.
Director and screenwriter Arild Andresen started out making
short films and commercials. In 2006, he directed the youth
drama miniseries Boys will be Boys, the first Norwegian production nominated for an EMMY. Andresen’s debut feature,
The Liverpool Goalie (2010), won both the Chrystal Bear
and a special mention at the Berlinale Generation 2011. It
received critical acclaim as well as a big audience nationally,
and has won lots of international festival awards. Company
Orheim is his second feature.
14
Years later, Jarle has to face the ghosts of his past and consider what his childhood was all
about.
Company Orheim is a family drama and coming of age story about guilt and atonement, and
the cost of independence.
Robert runs his own detective office, but never gets any cases. It is hard to be a private investigator with Down’s Syndrome. But this time a case comes Robert’s way. The legendary skater
Olav Starr is missing, and his family urgently needs an incompetent detective to pacify an
affluent and senile grandmother.
They’re in for a big surprise when Robert reveals his special investigation method, discovering
hidden facts within the family. He soon senses the family’s despair, and gradually finds himself
entangled in Olav’s misguided life. His assignment is not without danger, but eventually they
all have to acknowledge that Robert is not as stupid as they assumed.
After an affluent upbringing, with a ruthless brother, a
mother who worked as a teacher and a father who was a
major player in the porn industry, Bård Breien (1971) became conspicuously uptight already as a young man. His
yearning for personal freedom is still not over. He studied
history of ideas and literature prior to three years of film
studies in Copenhagen. His first short film, Frank’s Prolapse
(2003), about a torpedo with a back ache, was nominated
for an Amanda Award (2006). The Art of Negative Thinking
marked his feature film debut, both as screen writer and
director. The film won several international awards and
has been sold to many territories.

On a dark winter evening, driving home with his family, Jan hits his neighbours’ eight-year-old
son. The boy survives, but is left in a coma, and a deep rift develops between the two families
that will prove hard to repair. As time passes, the immediate sorrow and disbelief of the boy’s
father starts to give way to suspicion, and a dangerous struggle for truth and justice ensues.
Into the White is inspired by a true story. High above the harsh Norwegian wilderness, English
and German pilots shoot each other to the ground after a violent chance encounter. Isolated,
they must fight to survive the brutal winter. Though war has made them enemies, antagonism
is hard to maintain as days go by. Through mutual need, unlikely friendships bloom. Somehow,
they become comrades. War, after all, is absurd.
Petter Næss (1960)
has worked as an actor, screenplay
writer and instructor within the film and theatre world. He
directed his first feature film in 1999, the humorous Absolute Hangover. His second film was Elling, which was seen
by almost 800,000 people in Norway, and was nominated
for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Feature. In 2005,
he directed Love Me Tomorrow, the last film about Elling.
In between those two films, he has also had the responsibility of directing these films: the youth film Just Bea,
the Hollywood debut Mozart and the Whale, the Swedish
children’s film Leaps and Bounds, Gone with the Woman
and Shameless.

is the first boyfriend to treat her nicely, but Maria struggles with her past and the relationship
with her dad, who left her when she was very young. When her dad reappears it makes Maria

It´s just before Christmas, when kindhearted Sonja (14) arrives in a small village with a band
of thieves that have been holding her captive. The village is cursed. Once, a long time ago,
the King´s only daughter, Goldenhair, went into the forest to find the Christmas Star. She disappeared in the dark forest and never returned. The King subsequently cursed the Christmas
Star, and darkness and sadness descended on his kingdom. One night an old wise man came
to the castle. He told the King that if he could find the Christmas Star before ten years had
passed, Goldenhair would return.
Nine years have passed and this Christmas is the King´s last chance to find the Christmas Star.
Sonja manages to elude the thieves by escaping into the castle. She overhears the King´s sad
story just before she is discovered and captured. She begs for mercy as the evil Count tries
to throw her into the dungeon. The King buys her free from the robbers and releases her. As
thanks for his help, Sonja sets out to find the Christmas Star so the King can get his beloved
daughter back.
Tale (17) leads a theatre group of teenagers, who are planning to set up a play by the famous
Norwegian writer Jon Fosse. A professional actor, in the middle of a life crisis, agrees to direct
them. With certain conditions. He decides to cast the local hero, a great soccer player and a
fucking moron, as the main male actor. The group soon discovers that the director’s ambitions
make the teenagers’ lives a living hell.
Stian Kristiansen (1972) started his career as an actor,
and straight out of film school, he directed his feature
film debut The Man Who Loved Yngve (2008), which was
a huge box office success and won four Amanda Prizes
(Norwegian Oscar). He has since directed the short feature
The Video Boy (2011) and the sequel to his first film, I Travel
Alone. Kiss Me, You Fucking Moron is a result of his great
passion for theatre and soccer.

Half a century ago, the world was gripped with excitement as young Norwegian adventurer
Thor Heyerdahl embarked on a spectacular expedition – a journey of 4,300 nautical miles
across the Pacific Ocean on the primitive Kon-Tiki raft. The journey caught the public imagination and Thor and his crew reported home via radio transmitters as they drifted across the
biggest ocean on planet Earth. In a way, it was like the world’s first reality show: Would they
make it – or die trying…
On vacation in Istanbul Kaisa meets Jacob. The romance is intense and short-lived. The next
morning, Jacob leaves and Kaisa does not even know his last name. Working in Oslo, she
meets Andreas, which surprisingly resembles Jacob. Kaisa and Andreas gradually build up
a relationship and together they move to Helsinki, but the journey is different than both of
them had imagined.
Must have been Love is about the tension that arises in the face of love, both the one you think
you see coming and the one that catches you off guard. Where does the thin line between
true love and the one that may turn out not to be?

directed numerous short films, which
has won acclaimed prizes and honors. His background is
vast, spreading from humanitarian – and development

Pornopung is a film about the sympathetic Norwegian man’s chase for what all young men
want – sex, woman, love, success and popularity. A self-improvement project which was
supposed to end in heaven, but takes an ugly turn and send our main character into a dark
downwards spiral through the nightlife of Oslo. The film is a coming-of-age comedy that will
punch you in the stomach (or balls?), leaving you with the whole range of emotions – from
love, euphoria and laughter on one hand to sickening anger and bad conscious in the other.
(1986) has experience in all parts of film
production. He has worked as scriptwriter, director and
producer of several short films and music videos as well
as producer of the feature film The Bambi Effect (2011).
Pornopung is his debut as feature film director.

Pornopung is an honest film about being young and single in the Norway of today. It is about
the choice between sex or love. About having sex appeal, or not having it. About the search
for status amongst others, as well as your own self esteem. About doing it wrong, over and
over again, despite having the best intentions. About exploiting and being exploited. About
being trapped in the social game we all grew up in and learned to embrace.
The archaeologist Sigurd Svendsen discovers that the Oseberg ship from the Viking age has
a hidden secret. He brings his two kids on an adventure journey to a village on the border
of Norway and Russia, also known as No-man’s land, to find out the truth. He finds new and
amazing discoveries that are more frightening than he could ever imagine.
Mikkel Brænne Sandemose (1974) started his film career as
an animation assistant to his grandfather before moving
on to film school and live action filmmaking. Mikkel graduated from the directing program at the Film and Television Academy in 1998. The same year his first short film,
I killed a Cyclist, travelled festivals in Europe. He debuted
in 1999 as a video director with a hit for the Norwegian
artist Bertine Zetlitz, awarded video of the year. Since then
Mikkel has directed hundreds of commercials in Norway
and abroad. He debuted as a feature film director with

Ida’s mother has allowed her to stay at home alone for a week during summer vacation, on
the condition that she will take care of the family nursery. Ida’s friend Molly will stay with Ida
for the entire week, and they have planned to fully enjoy their freedom. But the nursery job
turns out to be much harder than they imagined, and things don’t improve when Molly tells a
lie and runs off to hang out with Lukas, the braggart of the village, instead of helping out. Ida
feels abandoned and yells at Molly, telling her she would never let a friend down for the sake of
a boy. But her loyalty is gone the moment she falls head-over-heels in love with Gustav, whom
she had actually planned to match up with Beate. Beate, who has been maniacally obsessed
with Gustav for years, is devastated. And when Molly runs off from Ida’s birthday party and
gets pissed, with disastrous results, the whole circle of friends falls apart.
Solan, Ludvig and Reodor Felgen are back. It’s almost Christmas, and what Ludvig wants
most of all is snow. But when Reodor builds the world’s most powerful snow cannon, it ends
up in the hands of Freeman Pløsen, editor of the “Flåklypa Gazette”. Above all things in this
world, Pløsen wants a record snowfall, and Solan and Ludvig must take action. On their own.
For Reodor has vanished, and outside a snowstorm is raging, getting steadily worse. Messing
around with nature is a dangerous business…

Vag Veum is going to be a father. In a way he could never imagine, life takes on a new direction
while he is searching for a missing pair of siblings in the prostitution circles in Bergen. Varg
realizes that the case is linked to a murder investigated by inspector Hamre, in which the
victim had uncomfortably close ties to the missing siblings. Parallel to Karin’s growing belly,
the threat against Varg is also increasing, as the clues point to a ruthless drug ring hunting for
a large missing heroin shipment. Varg realizes that life will never be the same when he has to
make a decision: Let the criminals go free or expose Karin to mortal danger.

Varg Veum witnesses the death of a young asylum seeking girl. Was it an accident, or was she
killed as a warning to other girls in the same circles? Together, Varg and Karin discover that
the dead girl was deeply involved in operations in which young women at asylum reception

people behind the ring, before more young girls lose their lives.

Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun’s novel “Victoria” from 1898 was the original love story. It has
everything a filmmaker and a cinema audience could wish for, young love, class differences,
success against all odds, costumes, glorious settings and in a heartbreaking ending when
Victoria confesses her true love to the man she didn’t get and should have had – before she
succumbs to tuberculosis.
Torun Lian is one of Norway’s most recognized screenwriters
and directors. She had her debut as a film director with
the short film There is Someone even Smaller than Anna in

national awards. In addition to a number of novels, her
production as a dramatist includes Frida – Straight from
the Heart as well as Falling Sky and Vegas, the latter two
co-written with Gunnar Vikene.

A Thousand Times Good Night
The female scientist Marie is in her late thirties, and works at the mass
department at the Norwegian Metrology Service. She lives in a lifeless and
childless relationship with a pilot husband who is never at home. Her father
is employed at the same department as his daughter. When he dies, she is
asked to take his place, and travel to Paris with the official Norwegian kilo,
for a control against the international standard. Delegates from all over
the world meet here, among them the Frenchman Jacques. A dawning
opportunity for new love, in which Marie and Jacques discover that the
old physical measure units foot, inch, and fathom still have validity. For
Marie, many questions arise: How much does love weigh? Or a life? Her
own life? And is she willing to throw it on the scales?

Captain Sabertooth’s world sets the stage for stormy and magnificent
adventures, in which the children demonstrate courage, shrewdness and
vigour in their battle against evil. The audience will enter the pirate vessel
The Black Lady and join the youngster Tiny and his girl friend Raven on an
adventurous voyage from the pirate alleys in Abra Harbour to the colourful
and exotic Lama Rama. Together with Captain Sabertooth and his crew,
they brave towering waves and travel through deep jungles in their search
for King Rufus’ fabled treasure. The film is a thrilling story, in which we
follow a young boy in tireless search for the truth about his missing father.
This voyage evolves into an adventure which will change Tiny’s life forever.
Captain Sabertooth and the Lama Rama Treasure will be a magnificent and
humorous live action feature film for the whole family.
In mid–winter the German illusionist Dirk Ohm arrives in the small town
Grong, a place ridden by the disappearance of a young local woman –
Maria. Dirk soon finds himself searching for Maria side by side with the
villagers of Grong; and slowly he falls in love with the missing woman.
This fictional story pays tribute to a real character, and to his mysterious
disappearance in the winter of 2003.
The world described in this tale is not at all like our world. The dungeons are
gloomier, the rich and their sons meaner, the parents much more self-centered, the crazy inventors’ inventions crazier. And the beast that lives in
the sewer system, brooding on revenge, could easily be a giant anaconda.
In this world, the friendship between two lonely children is perhaps even
more important than it is in our world. Doctor Proctor’s Fart Powder is the
story about two lonely (and a bit weird) children that finds friendship by
helping Doctor Proctor to get his recognition.

Norway is a beautiful country, with magnificent and spectacular scenery. The West Coast is so dramatic and picturesque it takes your breath
away. But it is also mortally dangerous. Since the 1100’s, various parts of
our stretched-out country have been hit by more than 5000 landslides.
The most well-known slide in recent times occurred in Tafjord, where a
63 metre tall wave caused the loss of 40 human lives. Such slides have
occurred earlier, and they will occur again. With ultramodern equipment
and constant monitoring we can save lives. But we are not able to prevent
the inevitable: the slide. And the subsequent wave... The Wave is a film
about a fictional slide. We follow a family during what turns out to be the
most dramatic day of their lives.

A documentary about the close relationship between two brothers. Markus (14) and Lukas
(11) live in an old, yellow townhouse in the middle of Oslo. The river runs close to their home.
A paradise in the heart of a big city. Big trees growing into the sky, and the water dark and
attractive beneath. Here the brothers grow up with their dreams and longings for the future.
Markus loves soccer, and wants to be a professional. He has played soccer since he was five,
and Liverpool is the only and best team. In the film we experience his struggle and passion
for achieving his goals. Lukas is the philosophic one, and likes to think all kinds of thougths.
About the world, himself and what the all is about. “Mummy, what happens with my dreams
after I’m dead, will they still be alive?”
This close and personal documentary is filmed by their mother. Aslaug Holm is both a director
and photographer, and wants to go into the children’s authentic world and discover the truth
and original life. In a period of five years she is filming her boys, and the result will turn into
a unique document about childhood and brotherhood – and life, for a grown up audience.

Director and writer Fredrik Horn Akselsen (1982) has his
education in film theory and film practice from NTNU in
Norway and QUT in Australia. The Exorcist in the 21st Century
is his second documentary. His debut film Treason and
Sabotage premiered in Kosmorama Int. Film Festival in

addition to this, Akselsen is writing and directing three
other projects, currently in development.

The Exorcist in the 21st Century takes the viewer into the unknown and sinister world of
exorcism in the Catholic Church. We meet one of the few exorcists in Europe, the Vatican
approved José Antonio Fortea. He travels around the world on a mission to enlighten the
masses about demonic possession. Constanza, a Colombian woman, is desperately looking
for Fr. Fortea’s help. She claims to have been possessed by demons for nearly 15 years and
she goes through a ritual of exorcism before she sees the Spanish exorcist as a last hope for
spiritual liberation. The film follows both their journeys and gives a unique insight into one of
the world’s most secret and mystical rites – the catholic rite of exorcism.
Fata Morgana is a film about dreams, friendship and survival, with the walls around Europe
as its backdrop. Filmmaker Zaradasht Ahmed came to Norway as a refugee in 1995. On a
trip to Morocco in 2007, in the port of Tangier, he meets the harraga, young men, who have
developed extreme methods to fulfil their dream: reaching the coast of Spain. Through Fata
Morgana, we meet these fortune hunters and gain a rare insight into their lives. Zaradasht is
fascinated by them. He ventures into their world, taking us into a landscape only those who
have burned all bridges know.
The director, Zaradasht Ahmed (1968), turns into a character
in the film. His background and, not least, his inquisitiveness
and fascination guide us as we enter this world of his. Zaradasht fled from the First Gulf War; he had just graduated
from the Kirkuk Institute of Technology in Northern Iraq. He
wandered through the minefields in the Kurdish part of Iraq,
and eventually reached Syria and later Lebanon. After five
years on the run, he arrived in Norway in 1995 as a quota
refugee. He still lives here, he has passed 40, and feels he
has to move on. Life in Norway is safe and comfortable,
but something is lacking. Fata Morgana lies to the south,
beyond Gibraltar. Here he meets someone who reminds
him of the dream he had as a young man.

Enter the badlands of Bundelkhand and you have entered a place of desolation, dust and
despair. And yet it is hope that this film discovers, captures and celebrates. Sampat Pal,
founder of the Gulabi Gang, has managed to inspire hope in the hearts of the very women
who till yesterday were powerless participants in their own oppression. Not just does the
Gulabi Gang take up women’s issues, it also fights other kinds of injustice like land-grabbing,
and lobbies for welfare schemes that corrupt officials have failed to implement. Yet between
the media-savvy Sampat and the rank and file cadre there is still a huge gap, and the struggle
for empowerment is bound to be a long one.

LOVE CITY
In the history of filmmaking, they were one of the great couples. Liv Ullmann and Ingmar
Bergman met in 1965. They lived together for five years, had a child together and they made
11 films together. Now, 46 years later, Ingmar is gone. But their love has never died. In the film
we meet Liv Ullmann, spending some days with the film crew in Mr. Bergman’s famous house
at Fårø, Sweden. In the interviews, she talks about all aspects of the life and work with him.
What she reveals is being intercut with scenes from their films, showing how their personal
relation affected the films they created.
The documentary film Love City shows how the progressive youth of Afghanistan are rejecting
the use of armed force and see film production as an alternative means of bringing peace and
social change to their war torn and occupied country.

De andre
From the yellow sand in the south to the snow-covered planes of the north. This character
driven documentary follows Inge Line, a Sami girl from Karasjok, and Tamer, a Bedouin boy
from the Negev desert in Israel. Inge Line is about to go through the ritual of ear marking a
reindeer. This symbolic act will bind her to her community forever, but she finds it difficult
to perform. Tamer, on his part, has a hard time combining his curiosity about the world with
the Bedouin way of life.

A Pigeon on a Branch, reflecting on existence is
the concluding part of Roy Andersson’s living trilogy,
which began with Songs from the Second Floor
(2000) and You, The Living (2007). The Trilogy portrays human existence with Roy Andersson’s characteristically offbeat humour and philosophical
wit. Like an anthropologist describing a strange,
yet beautiful society, Roy Andersson magnifies
the idiosyncrasies of mankind so that one may
see one’s self the way one really is. Inspired by
historical events and the classic works of art and
literature, The Living Trilogy creates a vast mosaic
of moving paintings in Andersson’s very strong
and completely unique visual style.
In a country where killers are celebrated as
heroes, the filmmakers challenge unrepentant
death squad leaders to dramatize their role in
genocide. The hallucinatory result is a cinematic
fever dream, an unsettling journey deep into the
imaginations of mass-murderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity
they inhabit.

A film about a woman who doesn’t exist. Moroccan
Hind was raped and consequently denied an official
identity – she has no other choice but to work as
a prostitute and traditional wedding dancer, but
despite the odds of her situation, she refuses to
give up her dream of dignity, motherhood and
love. This is a story of modern day outlaws, children of prostitutes, abandoned child brides and
those who have had to escape to the fringes of
patriarchal Moroccan society. Through the eyes
of one young woman we see a life of constant
struggle, but also a life free of the society’s norms
and boundaries.

The end of the successful trilogy seen by one
million Swedes at the movies, based on Jens
Lapidus’ novels.
One day, driving aimlessly around the outskirts of
town after a trivial domestic quarrel, a man named
Tomas accidentally hits and kills a child. Will he
be able to move on?
Freak Out! tells the untold story of a group of
middleclass kids who in 1900 revolted against
their time and started the original alternative
community – Monte Verità. A community based
on veganism, feminism, pacifism and free love.
Through their eyes we unfold the uncanny similarities between our time and what they revolted
against in the early 1900s.
Just like 60 000 other young Swedes Ana “Dino”
Dinovic (23) has fled the mass unemployment of
her home country for a new life in Oslo. But the new
life isn’t what Dino expected and now she’s caugt in
a destructive spiral of day-to-day jobs, lack of money and hard partying. After breaking her arm, she is
fired, and gets a job as a housekeeper in a home on
the verge of chaos. Steffen (45), once a professional
tennis player, now owns a restaurant about to go
bankrupt. Since his wife left, Steffen is alone with
two children. His seriously overweight son Kristian
(16) is no longer speaking to him. The family is falling apart completely. And Dino’s arrival changes
everything. During a few sultry summer weeks,
Steffen and Kristian find themselves competing
in a way nobody could have predicted. A loaded
triangular drama forms – with fatal consequences.

Carl Boenish follows his passion, leaping into the
unknown, creating a worldwide phenomenon and
essentially inventing extreme sports. Carl Boenish
dies doing the very thing he created and loved.
His wife repeats his treacherous act and lives, thus
telling others it is ok to go on. And go on they do,
transcending limitations to taste the dream that
one man could only begin to experience.
The film is set in the Guarani Indians’ unexplored
forest areas in Bolivia, where we follow the Spanish filmmaker Andres in his search for the circumstances surrounding a Swedish documentary film
made in the area a hundred years earlier. The result is a mystical, existential journey into the lives
of both the Indians and the filmmaker.
Torgny Segerstedt was one of the leading journalists in Sweden in the 20th century. He fought a
one man battle against Hitler and the Nazi regime
until his death in 1945 and during these tumultuous times his private life was marked by a world
in chaos, as he falls in love with his friend’s wife
while married himself. The Last Sentence weaves
together the story of a psychological love story
with a portrayal of the political situation Sweden
found itself in during the Second World War. A
gripping, dramatic and poetic tale about a man
who could not be silenced.

A story about a father-daughter relationship
that grows strong despite the inability to handle
an everyday situation with alcoholism. About a
daughter’s longing and vulnerability in a battle
against her father’s doom. One day, she must
choose: leave him or perish. This is a unique story about love, betrayal and red banners in the
1970s Sweden.
The story of two brothers, one of them deaf, and
their struggle to gather enough money to flee
their miserable life in a Palestine which cannot
even be defined as a homeland. A film reflecting
many of the minor and major revolutions taking
place in the region, narrated through two individuals sharing hope and pain in their dream of
finding a good life.
The Punk Syndrome is a film about Finland’s
most kick-ass punk rock band, Pertti Kurikaan
Nimipäivät. The band’s mentally handicapped
members, Pertti, Kari, Toni and Sami, play their
music with a lot of attitude and pride. We follow
these professional musicians on their journey from
the obscurity to popularity. We watch them fight,
fall in love and witness long days in the recording
studio and on tour. It’s a film about the essence of
punk – it’s a story of handicapped people rebelling
against mainstream.
The Sarnos is a love story about the legendary sex
film director Joe Sarno and his loyal wife and collaborator Peggy. Altering between New York and
their summer retreat in Sweden, we follow Joe,
“the Ingmar Bergman of 42nd Street”, for what
would be the last year of his life, as he is trying to
get one more film off the ground; a female-centered film in the old Joe Sarno-style.

Europe 1990, the Berlin wall has just crumbled:
Katrine, raised in East Germany, now living in Norway since more than 20 years, is a “war child”, the
result of a love relationship between a Norwegian
woman and a German occupation soldier. Katrine
enjoys a happy family life in Norway. But when a
lawyer asks her to witness in a trial against the
Norwegian state, she resists. Gradually, a web
of concealments and secret s is unveiled, until

nuclear program 1966-1996. Through the lives of
Kua, Teariki and their extended family in four generations we discover a deeply moving story where
the place you love and belong to turn into your
worst nightmare. Through their lives a complex
realty becomes understandable, a drama about
our vulnerability as human beings.
The true story of an Argentinian family who lived
with Josef Mengele without knowing his true identity, and of the girl who fell in love with one of the
biggest criminals of all times.

Hari, a taxi driver in the Indian Himalaya, is getting
married to a girl he has never met but with whom
he has nevertheless fallen in love with on the mobile
phone. Outspoken, opinionated and funny, Hari
grapples with nerves, heartburn and mounting
tension as the day of reckoning draws close. As
India rapidly modernizes, dramatic changes are
taking place even in his faraway village. But gods,
oracles, and age-old traditions still play an important role in everyday life and come together to
ensure an auspicious wedding.

The Gurkhas began soldiering for the British colony
in India 200 years ago, following a war in which
the Nepalis almost defeated the mighty British.
Impressed with the fighting prowess of the
khukuri-wielding Nepalis, Britain began recruiting
them. In the following centuries, these soldiers
have seen more continuous fighting than any in
the world. Despite the fact that the number of
Gurkhas being for the British Army has dwindled
from the 200,000 who fought during the Second
World to a couple hundred, young Nepalis, however, continue to be lured to become ‘Gurkhas’.
Today’s potential recruits are not rustic hill boys
but a new generation of urban-based Nepalis with
a school or higher education, attracted by wages,
but also drawn by the myth and glamour, as well
as the adventure and danger, associated with the
Gurkhas, in spite of the very real prospect of dying
in the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Norwegian Film Institutions
Norwegian Film Institute
Film & Kino
The Norwegian Film Institute (NFI) operates under the authority of the
Norwegian Ministry of Culture. The Institute is the Norwegian government’s
administrative body for the film sector and its advisor on film policy
issues. The Board of the NFI is appointed by the Ministry.
The NFI represents Norway in the Council of Europe’s fund for coproduction of films, Eurimages, as well as in the European Audiovisual
Observatory. Norway joined the European Convention on Co-Production
on 1 November 2009.
The NFI’s 2013 budget is NOK 550 million (approx. EUR 68.7 million), of
which NOK 446 million (approx. EUR 55.8 million) is earmarked for audiovisual development, production and distribution. The Institute also offers
personal grants, training and talent development for the film industry.
The NFI also participates in a number of other international cooperative
efforts for the audiovisual sector, including the European Film Academy,
European Film Promotion, Filmkontakt Nord and Scandinavian Films.
The NFI represents and promotes Norwegian feature films, shorts, documentaries, games and TV-series at festivals and film cultural events
nationally and abroad and provides statistics and facts about Norwegian
film and cinema.
The NFI is responsible for facilitating and promoting Norway as an attractive shooting location for foreign producers through Film Commission
Norway.
Film professionals and international audiences can find more information
on Norwegian films through www.norwegianfilms.no and the Norwegian
Film database
Film & Kino is a combination of a member organisation for Norwegian
municipalities and an industry organisation for the cinema and video
industries. The organisation, which was established in 1917, administers
the Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation and also runs the Mobile
Cinema and S-Kino.
Around the world, cinemas are usually owned by private companies.
In Norway, however, most cinemas are owned by the municipalities.
As a member organisation for the municipalities, Film & Kino is looking
after their interests concerning film, the running of cinemas and video
activities. Membership is open to all municipalities. The organisation
is governed by a national convention with delegates from both the
municipalities and the cinema and video industries.
Helps ensure public access to new and relevant films
Film & Kino’s mission is to ensure the public of the entire country access
to new and relevant films, either through regular theatrical releases, at
festivals or through DVD. The organisation shall further both the big
movie theatre experience and a purposeful use of the DVD format, as
well as being a guarantor of quality and diversity.
Film & Kino administers a number of support initiatives for films. About
30 per cent of the films in regular theatrical release in Norway receive
support from these initiatives. In 2011 all Norwegian movie theatres
became digital. During the next few years, the following up of the digitalising of Norwegian movie theatres will be one of the most important
tasks for the organisation.
84
Film & Kino’s fields of operations are:
> Following up the digitalisation of Norwegian movie theatres
> Support the import and distribution of films
> Main executive responsibility for the government’s film culture and
educational programmes for children and youth
> The official financing of Norwegian film festivals
> Developing the cinema and video industries
> Give advice and develop know-how
> Information and contact point for the public
Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation
Film & Kino administers the Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation,
which was established in 1970. Norwegian law instructs this foundation
to charge a certain percentage of cinema ticket sales as well as a levy
on video sales and rentals. Film & Kino’s activities for the cinema and
video industries are then financed by this foundation.
The Mobile Cinema
The Mobile Cinema is Film & Kino’s arrangement for the screening of films
in locations without a regular movie theatre. The Mobile Cinema brings
all necessary equipment and can screen films on all kinds of premises
all over the country.
In addition, Film & Kino offers programming assistance for small cinemas
without resources to maintain such a function. This arrangement is called
S-Kino.

Regional Film Funds and Film Centres
By the end of 2011 all districts in Norway are covered by regional, public
resource centres for film, apart from Oslo, the capital. These are ‘film
centres’, ‘film funds’ and/or ‘film commissions’. They all have regional
as well as governmental support. The national goals are to stimulate
strengthened production infrastructure, professionality and continuity
in all parts of the production – and increased talent development.
There are 8 film centres, 6 regional film funds and 3 regional film commissions, of whom some are co-located regionally. In addition there is a
national film commission. Furthermore FilmCamp function as film fund, film
