Rally Score Card - Tournament Records 2003-2007
Side Out and Rally Scoring Records
The change of format for the Volleyball tournament in 1990 allowed the MPSSAA an opportunity to recognize individual and
team accomplishments. The MPSSAA is most grateful to Lisa
Meyer of Owings Mills, for many years the official statistician
for the championships, who generously volunteered to compile and maintain the records.
When the state semifinals moved to a central site in 1996,
those performances were also included in the statistics
(sf=semifinal; f=final.)

Scoring tournament records now appear on these pages.
The MPSSAA is deeply indebted to Christy Rawlins of Perry Hall
HS who has stepped forward to continue the task of maintaining and expanding the records as the game itself changes.

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS
The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association presents annually a sportsmanship award at the Volleyball finals, a tradition established in 1998. This prestigious award is now named to honor the memory of Lesley A. Cooke, Athletic
Director at McDonough High School and long-time member of the state volleyball committee who passed away suddenly in
the fall of 2004. The trophy will be presented to the one school that displays the best overall sportsmanship while participating in the state tournament.
Coaches, players, cheerleaders, and spectators from each participating school will be evaluated and rated by members of
the state tournament committee during each tournament match. At the conclusion
of the final match, a commemorative plaque will be presented to the principal of the
school achieving the highest overall average score.

John H. Cox
“Respect The Game” Football
Sportsmanship Award
John Cox former chairman of the MPSSAA Football Committee passed away on October 1, 2007, following a long
battle with cancer.
John served as football tournament chairman from 1988
to 2006. His tenure was marked by two expansions of
the state football tournament. The first expansion came
in 1985 while he was co-chairman of the football committee as the tournament moved from four teams per
classification to eight teams. In 2003, the tournament
expanded for a second time, increasing to 16 teams per
classification.
John also served on the National Federation Football
Rules Committee as chairman of the Equipment Committee. His leadership on the rules committee was responsible for many significant revisions of high school
rules.
John’s passion and commitment to the sport of football
as well as his sense of fair play and sportsmanship leaves
a lasting legacy on the MPSSAA and especially the sport he loved.
In his honor, the MPSSAA Football Committee has established the “John H. Cox Respect the Game Football
Award.” The award will be presented to the school that displays the best overall sportsmanship while competing in the football championship game. Players, Coaches, Cheerleaders, Bands and Fans can Respect
the Game by emulating the values John Cox brought to our state.

TOURNAMENT NOTES:
From 1971 through 1992, classifications were combined.
Both a single team champion and a single individual champion were crowned.
In 1993, the tournament expanded into two separate classifications, 4A-3A and 2A-1A. Each crowns its own team champion.
Poor weather forced the 1977 tournament to be played as
a one-day competition.
Winston Churchill was the first team to win back-to-back championships (1987 and 1988).
In 1984, the first individual girls’ champion was crowned -Clare Dolan of Seneca Valley. Dolan held the records for the one-day (74) and twoday total (149) for 17 years.
In the 2007 tournament, senior Caroline Sweet of Elenaor Roosevelt set new records with a 1-day score of 68 and a 2-day score of 140.
Webb Heintzelman, Walt Whitman, was the first boy to win 2 individual championships (1977 and 1979). No other boy has won more than two.
Kim Cayce of Winston Churchill, is the only girl to win 3 individual titles (1986, 1987, and 1988).
In 2002, the sniper shootings in the Washington metropolitan area caused a one week delay, a change of venue, and a one-day competition.
Two separate (2A-1A and 4A-3A) one-day tournaments were inaugurated in 2003. The Winston Churchill boys team established a new record
of 303 for low score. Senior Chrissy Gonzalez of Great Mills made a 3-ft putt on the final hole to set a Girls Record for a 1-day total.
In 2007, Walt Whitman set a new low tournament score of 596.
