QUAPAW SCOUTER SEPT. & OCT. 2015 Issue #2015-4 QUAPQ QUAPAW SCOUTER Sept. & Oct. 2015 2014 SILVER AWARD LEVEL JOURNEY TO EXCELLENCE COUNCIL BUILD AN ADVENTURE WWW.QUAPAWBSA.ORG NEW WORLDS OPENED THROUGH SCOUTING volunteers and supporters of Scouting. First, former Quapaw Area Council Presidents Sherman Tate (2013-2014) and Gus “Buddy” Blass (1960-1962) provided the leadership and funding to first begin the Scouting program at Troop 113 in 2013. Jaelon Porter and Eric Brown, both of Helena, never dreamed that joining Boy Scout Troop 113 chartered to the Boys & Girls Club of Phillips County would lead them on the adventure of a lifetime. But, a whole new world was literally opened up for both of them through Scouting. Due to their demonstrated leadership abilities and Scouting spirit, both Jaelon and Eric (both students at the KIPP Delta Public School) were selected by their peers to attend the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Yamaguchi, Japan on July 28-August 8, 2015. This once in a lifetime opportunity has a wonderful back-story and has became a reality through the efforts of several Tate, the first African-American President of the Quapaw Area Council, had a vision to offer Scouting to the youth in the area of his hometown of Marvel, AR (a town in the Arkansas Delta very close to Helena / West Helena). Tate’s vision and personal involvement in the organization of Troop 113 was supported by the generous financial support of Blass who financed all the Scouts in the troop to attend summer camp in 2014. Additionally, the Scoutmaster for the newly formed Troop, Chris Johnson, a teacher at KIPP Delta Public Schools, really helped to implement and deliver the program to the boys that were registered as Scouts. In fact, due to the success of this first Scouting Program, KIPP Delta Schools is now working to add Scouting as part of their educational offerings in several other locations. One of the most interesting aspects to this story is that neither Jaelon nor Eric had traveled outside of the Delta Region (Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee) prior to this trip. This experience will literally open up a whole new world of adventure to both of these young men. And, with both of them being in their early teenage years, it is the hope of all that have supported this effort that they will be able to tell their story to other youth in Helena and the surrounding areas and inspire hope in other youth their age. Both Jaelon and Eric were invited to make a report to the Executive Board of the council in late August. While there, both expressed their thanks for this wonderful opportunity and enthralled the board with their stories, memories, and experiences at the Jamboree. Jaelon really summarized his experience best in one sentence. “Every Scout was kind and got along well, like the world should be.” You can find the council on social media by searching for QACBSA. School is back in and that means Scouting is back in full swing. Hopefully everyone had many safe Scouting Adventures over the summer. Quapaw Lodge participated in two large National OA events over the summer. The first was ArrowTour which came to visit Little Rock on July 26th and Quapaw Lodge was very well represented. Over 400 Cub Scouts, Scouts, and Adults from at least 5 different councils converged on River Front Park for a truly memorable experience. Fun / active events included a dunking booth, obstacle course, and screen printing station. More reflective events such as a rededication show and construction of a time capsule to be opened in 25 years were all well received. A special thanks to our many Lodge Brothers from Summer Camp Staff who braved the 110 degree heat to help us set up barely 12 hours after packing up Camp Rockefeller—A true example of Servant Leadership! This year was also the Centennial National Order of the Arrow Conference held at Michigan State University. We had, perhaps, the largest contingent in the Lodge’s history to attend NOAC; 58 Participants & 6 staff eagerly trekked to the conference. The Lodge members participated in the week-long event consisting of training, activities, competitions, and shows. Quapaw Lodge was recognized nationally in several ways. First, the Lodge Contingent received the coveted Chief’s Circle Award. Secondly, the Lodge was recognized with the Lodge History Exemplar Award. Many thanks to the history committee that lead the charge on updating and preserving the Lodge History. This included Brothers Terry Kearns, David Elmore, Phil Parette, Frank Bolton, and the late Daniel Ashley. We had a spectacular summer but the fun is not over for 2015! The Lodge will wrap up summer with our annual Pilgrimage event September 25-27. Fun, fellowship, and training will abound as Arrowmen journey back to Camp Rockefeller. We will be honoring both our newly selected Vigil Honor members and Koskalakas recipients. The youth will elect the Lodge's leadership for the upcoming year. And, remembering those Brothers who have passed since the last Pilgrimage with a Broken Arrow ceremony is also a tradition that will be observed. This is one event not to miss! Register at: www.quapawbsaevents.org today! The last OA event for the year will be our Fall Fellowship and Ordeal on October 23-25. This is the last opportunity for Scouts who were nominated to the Order of the Arrow to complete their Ordeal and become members. It is great opportunity for all Arrowmen to give service to Camp Rockefeller as we close it down for the winter. Another wonderful year has wrapped up for Camp Rockefeller on beautiful Gus Blass Scout Reservation. There were 1550 youth and 485 adults that experienced a summer that they will soon not forget. A huge thanks goes out to those 485 adult volunteers who took a week off of work and away from their families to offer their Scouting youth an amazing week of camp. Without their dedication and commitment, these young men would not have had the opportunity to attend camp. Of course, summer camp wouldn’t happen without the terrific staff and volunteers that make it happen. Tony Sitz served as Camp Director again this summer and gave great leadership to the staff. David Howlett was served as Program Director and Jennifer Cordell Associate Program Director. Both performed their jobs of coordinating all the program offerings very well. Without their leadership, camp would not have been possible. Very limited space is left for the 2015 Quapaw Area Council Sporting Clays Classic. For $1000, your 5-person team can compete against some great shooters, ringers, good ol’ boys, and greenhorns! This event will fill to capacity so register today to be sure not to miss all the action. Oh, and fun is a guarantee! Join Scouting Night Report Despite a last minute change of date for the Little Rock School District Join Scouting Night date the volunteers of the Mohawk District were out in full force to welcome the new boys and their families into the scouting family. All volunteers who served as emcees, registrars, and rallymasters are to be commended for the great effort on the evening of August 27. Through your efforts more than 50% more boys joined Scouting in 2015 than in the same schools last year. This means that many boys now have the opportunity to experience the great scouting programs in the Mohawk District. THANK YOU! Bobcat Day Coming Soon Bobcat Day is scheduled for Saturday September 19 at Reservoir Park in Little Rock. Bobcat Day will give new cub scouts that signed up at Join Scouting Night and their families their first “taste” of the adventures of scouting. The promise of shooting BB guns and bows and arrows and earning badges will come true at Bobcat Day! Volunteers are needed to assist with parking, registration, and activity stations during the day. Two sessions are being offered for the new cub scouts: a morning session from 9 AM- 12 noon and an afternoon session from 1 PM- 4 PM. If you would like to volunteer to assist that day at either or both sessions and see more smiles than you have in a long time please contact Bobcat Day Chair Brittany Plouch at (501) 779-3182 or [email protected] QUAPAW SCOUTER SEPT. & OCT. 2015 | Issue #2015-4 Nischa Sipo District District Chairman: Dr. John Gillespie District Commissioner: Gary Henningsen District Executive: VACANT Calendar of Events September 2015 10 Commissioner Meeting, 6:00 PM Benton First United Methodist Church (200 North Market St.) 10 Cub Scout and Boy Scout Roundtable, 7:00 PM, Benton First United Methodist Church (200 North Market St.) 10 Order of the Arrow, 7:00 PM, Benton First United Methodist Church (200 North Market St.) 26 Cub Scout / Boy Scout Leader Training, Benton First United Methodist Church (200 North Market St.) October 1 8 8 8 2015 District Committee Meeting, 7:00 PM, Benton First United Methodist Church (200 North Market St.) Commissioner Meeting, 6:00 PM Benton First United Methodist Church (200 North Market St.) Cub Scout and Boy Scout Roundtable, 7:00 PM, Benton First United Methodist Church (200 North Market St.) Order of the Arrow, 7:00 PM, Benton First United Methodist Church (200 North Market St.) Roundtable Theme: September 2015 CUB SCOUT PROGRAM THEME: “Clean / Cubservation” BOY SCOUT PROGRAM THEME: “Science” 13 October 2015 CUB SCOUT PROGRAM THEME: “Brave / Super Cub” BOY SCOUT PROGRAM THEME: “Financial Management” Nischa Sipo District Training COURSE: Youth Protection, “This is Scouting” (Required for all; Cub Scouts Leaders) Leader Specific Training (Training for your current position in your unit) Description: Using the web-based versions of Youth Protection Training and “This is Scouting” leaders will spend the first half of the course learning about the policies and procedures that are in place to protect our youth and leaders alike, how the organization is structured, and where to get additional resources and information. Shown Here: Camp Rockefeller New Handicraft Pavilion First of all, all of the old wooden pavilions throughout camp were taken down, new concrete floors poured, and new metal pavilions erected in their place. These new pavilions have higher roofs, are easier to maintain, and should last for many, many years. Shown Here: ECOLOGY / CONSERVATION Pavilion The largest project underway is the installation of an all metal roof on the Reynold’s Scout Training Center. This will also repair some leaking on the existing roof and improve the overall condition of RSTC. Workers continue to install an all metal roof at RSTC.
