Message From The Chair
A
s I reflect back on Imagine Canada’s first year, I am inspired by what we
have learned about ourselves and our role in the charitable and nonprofit
sector. I am also proud of how this new organization, in only one year, has
broadened its scope and worked to realize its vision: strong and vital charitable and
nonprofit organizations, the private sector, and governments working together for
social progress and vibrant communities.
In 2005, we established new offices in Ottawa and Calgary – a move that
demonstrates this new organization’s commitment to a pan-Canadian approach to
building an effective and sustainable sector. By continuing to engage our members,
our governments, our supporters, and our partners across the country, we will
continue our work on behalf of the charities and nonprofits that touch every aspect
of our lives.
I am grateful for the support of my fellow directors this year, and would
especially like to acknowledge the contributions of the senior volunteers
who left the board in 2005: Marilyn De Mara, Mayann Francis, Dale
Godsoe, Allan Lefever, Faye Porter, and Lucie Rémillard. Thank you
for helping us build something special.
Congratulations to Georgina Steinsky-Schwartz and the
dedicated staff at Imagine Canada. It’s been quite a year!

Message From The CEO
I
t’s been quite a year indeed: a new name; releases of groundbreaking research
including a report that showed Canada has the second largest charitable and nonprofit
sector in the world; representations to both the Senate’s Finance and Anti-Terrorism
Committees and to the Gomery Inquiry; success in getting commitment from four major
political parties of the importance of the sector during the federal election, and the
establishment of new offices in Ottawa and Calgary. While we accomplished a lot, I’ve always
maintained, though, that “how” we do things is as important as the “what”.
This organization was built on the principles of partnership and collaboration; these principles
have informed and guided our work throughout our first year, and will contribute to our
success in years to come. The Imagine Canada – John Hodgson Library and the Voluntary
Sector Awareness Project are both examples of how we have partnered to increase access
to resources and build awareness about the sector. We also celebrated innovative projects
between businesses and charities and nonprofits through our Community Partnership Awards
in the fall of 2005.
It is impossible to work in isolation – businesses, governments, and individual Canadians each
play a role in building communities and maintaining a healthy democracy. Through our Ottawa
office, Imagine Canada will continue to inform the decisions of government. Our Toronto and
Calgary offices will develop more signature research on the sector, build the body
of knowledge on volunteering, and work with business, charities and nonprofits
across the country to encourage them to support the communities in which
they operate.
I thank our board of directors for their leadership and governance
throughout the year. To the partners, funders, and friends with
whom we have worked closely in 2005, and in particular
the staff at Imagine Canada, I appreciate your insight,
accomplishments, and commitment to the mission of
our new organization.
Thank you!

One Organization. One Year.
A
s we began shaping the organization that would become Imagine Canada, we
had one goal in mind: to create an organization that would help our communities
remain vibrant and sustainable. In 2005, we got the chance to do just that.
Working in partnership
Working in partnership has been a hallmark of Imagine Canada’s first year. Our longstanding
association with renowned civil society experts at Johns Hopkins University resulted in the
publication of our new study that showed that Canada has the second largest charitable
and nonprofit sector in the world. This signature research was released at our International
Symposium in early Spring 2005, attended by delegates from Canada, the United States,
Australia, Norway, and France. Later in the year, we hosted our Community Partnership
Awards, an annual celebration of innovative collaborations between members of our Caring
Company program and nonprofit organizations.
Advancing knowledge
This year, the Imagine Canada – John Hodgson Library expanded both its collection and
reach, increasing access to 6000 resources and information about the sector in Canada
and around the world. In the fall of 2005, a group of project partners which included
Imagine Canada published a report as part of the Voluntary Awareness Project outlining
the benefits and challenges of creating a “unified voice” for the voluntary sector. This
report will inform a nationwide public awareness campaign scheduled for 2006.
Throughout the year, the Knowledge Development Centre at Imagine Canada continued
to fund and publish research on various aspects of volunteering and volunteerism.
More than 25 new resources were released in 2005, and can be accessed via the
Imagine Canada – John Hodgson Library at www.nonprofitscan.ca, or the Knowledge
Development Centre’s website at www.kdc-cdc.ca.

Supporting the sector across Canada
Imagine Canada realized many accomplishments in the public policy arena this year. We worked
hard to help government understand why strong and sustainable charities and nonprofits are
key to the success of our country. Through our new office in Ottawa, we submitted briefs to
the House of Commons Finance Committee, the Commission of Inquiry into the Sponsorship
Program and Advertising Activities, and the Senate’s Anti-Terrorism Committee.
We worked in the nation’s capital to bring attention to sector issues during the federal
election campaign in late 2005. All four major political parties made a commitment
recognizing the importance of the charitable and nonprofit sector in Canada.
To increase our presence in Western Canada and to better engage with our members in
that region, Imagine Canada established a new office in Calgary thanks to the support
of EnCana Corporation. Staff in our first western office worked closely with members of
our Caring Company program and charities and nonprofits, and led Imagine Canada’s
marketing and communications team throughout 2005.
Looking to the future
We’ve learned and accomplished a great deal in our first year, but our work has just
begun. Imagine Canada will continue to develop as an acknowledged force of expertise
on issues touching charitable and nonprofit organizations across this country, and will
work to ensure that they are supported and appreciated even more than they are today.
Everyone has a place in the sector – businesses, governments, and individual Canadians
each play a role in sustaining the organizations that touch our lives every day. Imagine
what this country could be if we all worked even closer together.
