Family Satisfaction – Striving to Provide the Best Care
Fall/Winter 2012
Family Satisfaction –
Striving to Provide the Best Care
Hospice of Holland is known for providing exceptional
quality end-of-life care. Satisfaction with our care is
measured by surveying the families who use our services
and their feedback is very important to us.
We met that goal in three out of the four categories. In
several areas, we scored near the top for satisfaction
among the 1600 other hospices nationwide, using the
same survey.
Our survey return rate is 50% meaning, one out of every
two surveys we send out is completed and sent back to
us. That is a great return rate - our goal is 30%.
Hospice of Holland’s goal is to be the best at providing
hospice care to the communities we serve. The data show
we are well on our way to meeting that goal.
Our survey addresses how we provide coordinated care,
attend to the needs of the family, communicate with
family, and provide information about what to expect at
end-of-life. Our overall goal is to be at or above the
national average.

Ask For Us by Name
Dear Friends:
Torrey Husmann, MHA
Executive Director
You may have seen our current
billboard message, “Ask for Us by
Name” displayed in various locations
throughout West Michigan. At first
glance, the message appears simple,
but for those facing end of life, it
is part of a surprisingly complex
picture.
Welcome New Volunteers!
October, 2012, 16 individuals graduated from the Hospice
of Holland Orientation Program (HOP).
All of our volunteers complete an 18 hour training session
and an extensive background check to ensure we have
highly trained individuals spending time with our patients.
Facing a terminal diagnosis is complicated in and of
itself. With 16 hospice providers currently serving West
Michigan, individuals “making the first call” can feel very
overwhelmed by all of them. To select the best care
option, one must first understand all hospice providers
are not the same. When it’s time, you may have to ask for
the one you want - by name.
Hospice of Holland is passionate about meeting the needs
of individuals who are facing their final days. We serve
patients in Ottawa, Allegan, Kent and Van Buren counties
and have for over 31 years (and 9,000 patients).
Our enthusiasm for providing the best in end-of-life care
for our patients and their families is at an all time high. The
addition of a second physician to the clinical care team,
a 2nd disease specific care program, and high patient
family satisfaction are just snapshots of what happened
behind the scenes resulting in exceptional care.
As we continue the efforts started 31 years ago, we are
reminded what a privilege it is to serve our communities
in this way. Thank you for your generous support, your
positive feedback, and your donations to Hospice of
Holland. You make high quality end-of-life care in West
Michigan possible.
Bereavement Counselor, Kathy Miedema, MSW, leads the HOP class.
Highlights of HOP include an introduction and welcome
from Executive Director, Torrey Husmann, followed by
interactive discussions and group activities regarding family
dynamics, psychosocial issues, and the grieving process.
Social workers, bereavement counselors, and Medical
Director Roger Phillips, MD, walk the group through the
dying process to ensure they will be comfortable when
they are with patients on their own.
Congratulations to all 2012 HOP graduates! Thank you
for choosing to serve Hospice of Holland in this way.
For anyone considering hospice care for a loved one,
please do not wait. Our families always tell us “we should
have called sooner.” Call us direct. Ask for us by name,
Hospice of Holland, you’ll be glad you did.

Adding More L ife
In Their Own Words
My brother Dan passed a couple of weeks ago and I just
want to say how professional and loving your representatives were. As I am sure you hear I wish they would have
been involved much earlier. However we had trouble
getting a doctor to say no more treatments – something I
am sure you have also heard before. I personally had to find the lead doc in GR and ask her
to stop saying she was considering more chemo. As it
was you guys only got involved about 2 days before he
passed.
I have heard about last messages and was given a book
titled “Final Gifts” that gives plenty of examples of
statements of individuals about to pass – the goal of the
book is to share the idea that we do not pass alone. Just
a few hours before Dan passed I was holding his hand
and nodding off when I felt him squeeze my hand and
when I looked up he looked like he regained strength he
had a week before and as he looked at me he said “Mike
they are calling my name” – how comforting for me to
hear, and just a few hours later he passed.
Mike Suman
“I want you to know how happy and grateful we are for
the excellent service rendered to my wife, Aileen, during
weeks of loving care prior to her death on December
sixteenth. Nowhere could there be such a dedicated staff
who showed so much sincere care and love. Amazing!”
Things I liked:
1. The professionalism and training your people have.
2. The natural empathy yet with an air of honesty they
showed.
3. The truth we finally heard when your nurse got us in
a circle and as painful as it was to hear she told us the
truth about what stage he was in and what we could
expect from Dan as far as stages, sounds, pain, etc. That was so needed by his immediate family.
4. The swiftness of how they put in the bed, removed the
drugs no longer needed and switched him on drugs
given to him by at least three doctors to drugs that allowed him to live and communicate as comfortable as
possible.
5. Hearing the truth allowed us to get far away family
members in to say their final messages which would
not have happened if we did not have hospice.
6. The little things like
a. Put a sign on the door of their home thanking
people for coming but now is not the time for a
visit but call this number if……
b. The swiftness of how they removed all evidence of
them being in the home.
c. How they told us all to call one number and not 911
or anyone else when he did pass and we did and
they took care of everything.
d. Coming in the middle of the night to confirm the
passing – almost stealth like without the coldness
of what the alternative of the police and EMS would
have brought. to Every Day
Sincerely, Earl Borlace
Thank you! These two small words cannot convey the
gratitude our family feels for the love, care and respect
that all of you at Hospice House provided for our parents
over these last seven months. You all made our mom and
dad feel as if they were the only patients in your facility.
Your ability to give such loving, personal and professional
care is truly a gift….to know that every staff member in
the building truly cared about our parent’s well being
made the journey less painful.
The Family of George and Shirley Christman
“Thank you for arranging for the meeting space and tour
and wonderful dinner! The Hospice House is just a wonder of amazing planning and beauty and is so needed for
those who occupy the space.” Arlene Welling,
member of Holland Hospital’s
Margaret P. Hummer Guild
Did you know the Hospice House
is available for your group’s meeting & tour?

Hospice of Holland’s
Newest Specialty Care Program
Introducing
Hospice patients with congestive heart failure often
experience difficult symptoms causing pain, anxiety and
repeated trips to the hospital.
The new Take Heart program provides a full range of extra
support and education to help end of life patients and their
caregivers reduce CHF symptoms and hospitalizations.
“In my 26 years practicing medicine, I have seen how
difficult it is for patients, families and physicians to cope
with and manage congestive heart failure. The Take Heart
program is making that task easier. By providing education
and extra support in the home, we can treat difficulty
breathing, pain and other symptoms, making end of life
more comfortable for these patients and their families.”
