2014-15 Year in Review
21st Year
Established in 1994, the Southern Connecticut Conference completed its 21st
year in 2014–15... One of the top – if not the best – high school leagues in the
state of Connecticut, the athletic success of our member schools was once again
outstanding in 2014–15 with 22 state championships won; and another 21 teams
earned state runner-up status. Since the league’s formation in 1994-95, SCC
teams have won 401 state championships – an average of 19 per academic year.
More importantly, the league has continued its positive tradition of offering
first-rate non-athletic programs and events which seek to enrich our students’
overall high school experience and make them responsible citizens.

To continue to offer top-notch programs and events, the SCC relies on financial
support from the local business community. The SCC had several corporate
sponsors for the 2014–15 academic year, including the The United Illuminating Company, Fresh Concepts, Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists, Holiday
Hill/Holiday Hill Day Camp, Great Blue Research and Town Fair Tire. For the
eighth straight year, Dick’s Sporting Goods partnered with the SCC to provide coupons and promotional material at league events... In
addition, the SportsCenter of Connecticut continued its sponsorship of the Scholar Athlete of the Month program... Thanks also to the
various event sponsors during the year, including Walter Camp Football Foundation (football banquet), New Haven Gridiron Club
(football banquet), Gene Casey New Haven chapter of the National Football Foundation (football banquet), the New Haven Lions
Club (baseball playoffs), and Sound Runner (sponsor of the league’s running events).

Captains Council
More than 1,200 sport captains attended the three SCC Captains Council events (fall, winter and spring) held during the year at New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center. The meetings brought together the captains of each sport before their respective seasons start to provide
guidance of what it means to be a captain and the responsibility that comes with the position and enhance the ideals of sportsmanship. In
addition, guest speakers presented on topics of social media, collegiate preparation and leadership/communication skills.
State Championship Conference
It was another successful year as SCC member-schools fared extremely well in league and statewide athletic
competition. All told, SCC teams captured 22 state championships (5 fall, 9 winter, 8 spring) during the 2014-15
academic year. Twenty-one additional teams (4 fall, 10 winter, 7 spring) earned runner-up status in CIAC state
competition.
More State Championship Facts
Fourteen different SCC schools won state titles in 2014–15 with Amity Regional and Hillhouse each capturing
the most (3). Daniel Hand and league-newcomer Lauralton Hall each won two state titles. Since the league’s
inception in 1994, SCC schools have won 401 state championships. In those 21 years, Cheshire and Hillhouse have
won the most state championships (58) followed by Amity Regional (37), Daniel Hand (35) and Fairfield Prep (33).
Season-by-Season State Playoff Recap
In 2014-2015, more than two-thirds of eligible SCC teams (164–of–240, 68.3 %) qualified for CIAC state tournament competition in sports requiring a qualification (wins or winning percentage).
Fall (47–of–69), 68%
Sixty-eight percent of SCC teams qualified for the state tournaments in the following fall sports: field hockey
(8-of-12), girls soccer (13-of-18), boys soccer (13-of-19) and girls volleyball (13-of-20). In addition, four football
teams (out of 19) earned state playoff berths.
Winter (53–of–76), 70%
Seventy percent of SCC teams qualified for the state tournaments in the following winter sports: boys ice hockey
(22-of-25), boys basketball (14-of-20), girls basketball (13-of-20) and girls ice hockey (4-of-11).

Spring (64–of–95), 67.4%
Sixty-seven percent of SCC teams qualified for CIAC spring team sport playoff competition in baseball (15–of–19),
softball (14–of–20), boys lacrosse (12–of–17), girls lacrosse (10–of–16), boys volleyball (3–of–5) and girls tennis
(10–of–18).
SCC vs. SCC – For all the Marbles
During 2014-15, there were three All-SCC state championship contests. In the fall, Xavier defeated Shelton, 28-27, in overtime in the Class
LL Small state football final at West Haven HS. In the winter, Simsbury played to a 2-2 tie with East Catholic/Glastonbury/South Windsor in the state girls ice hockey championship game at Terry Connors Rink in Stamford. In the spring, league newcomer Lauralton Hall
completed a 24-0 undefeated season with a 6-1 victory over league-rival Guilford in the Class M girls tennis final at Eisenhower Park in
Milford. Since 1994, there have been 24 All-SCC state championship game matchups in 11
different sports, including 13 in the last six years.
Rivers Named Athlete of the Year
Wilbur Cross junior Danae Rivers was named the New Haven Register’s 2014–15 Female
Athlete of the Year – the second straight year she has been honored. Danae was a three-sport
(cross country, indoor and outdoor track) standout for the Governors. An All-SCC honoree
in each sport, Danae was the SCC Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. Danae is
the 26th student athlete – since 1996-97 – from the SCC to earn this prestigious honor.

SCC Arts Exhibition
The annual SCC Arts Exhibition was held April 7-15 at the Creative Arts Workshop
in downtown New Haven. There were nearly 50 pieces in the exhibition. There was a Show
Opening held on April 9 with awards presented by the CAW staff, who judged the pieces.
Special thanks to CAW Executive Director Daniel Fitzmaurice and CAW Public
Relations Director Katherine Spencer Carey for their hospitality.

Forty-Six Honored as SCC Scholar Leaders
The "best of the best" were honored on Monday, March 23 as the SCC held its annual Scholar Leader Banquet at Anthony’s
Ocean View in New Haven. Two recipients, as selected by their principal, from each SCC member school were recognized for their
leadership and excellence in the classroom, in their schools and local communities.

The winners of the 2015 Bill O’Brien Community Service Scholarships ($500 each) were Naomi Caldwell ( Amity Regional) and
Charles Ahern (Branford). Naomi was chosen for her work with a set
of twins she tutored as part of the New Haven Reads program, while
Charles is being recognized for his involvement and fundraising with
Camp Rising Sun, a camp for kids with cancer.

SCC’s Best of…. 2014-15
Town Fair Tire was the presenting sponsor of the SCC’s “Best of… for 2014-15,” an online poll
to determine the best moment or performance in the Southern Connecticut Conference during
the academic year. More than 900 votes were cast over a 14-day period.
The Winner:
For the first time in league history, three SCC baseball teams (Amity Regional – LL, North
Haven-L, and Sheehan-M) win state titles. Sheehan defeated Montville, 5-0, in Class M final on June 13. A day
later, Amity Regional captured its third straight Class LL title (8-1 over Staples) and North Haven held off East
Lyme, 3-2, in the Class L final.
More top SCC moments from 2014-15...
• Mercy completes the tri-fecta”: wins SCC titles in cross country, indoor track and
outdoor track & field.
• Eight days after winning the SCC title, the Amity Regional boys cross country team
captures a state title at the highly-competitive Class LL meet on October 25.
• Making its third straight state final appearance, the East Haven softball team defeats
previously undefeated Fitch, 4-2, to win the Class L state title; and its first state championship since 1984.
• Lauralton Hall girls tennis finishes a perfect 24-0 season as it wins the SCC Division I
and Class M state titles.
• Two weeks after winning the SCC title, the Amity Regional baseball team captures its
third straight – the first ever by a Class LL team – state title on June 13 with an 8-1 win
over Staples.
• Fairfield Prep, playing in its third state title game in four years, wins the Class LL boys
basketball championship with a 51-50 victory over Westhill.
• Xavier holds off SCC-rival Shelton, 28-27, in overtime, to the win the Class LL Small
State Football Championship.
• Branford field hockey coach Cathy McGuirk wins her 500th game on September 9 versus Sacred Heart Academy.
• Daniel Hand gymnastics wins its seventh straight SCC title and proceeds to capture the
Class M state title.
• Eight days after playing for the SCC title, Simsbury and East Catholic battle to a 2-2 tie
in the girls ice hockey state title game and are declared co-champions.
• Daniel Hand field hockey wins its first-ever state title – capturing the Class M championship with a 2-1 victory over Wilton.
• Mercy wins its first-ever girls outdoor track & field state championship (Class L).
• Wilbur Cross’ Danae Rivers is a repeat winner of the Gatorade Connecticut Track &
Field Athlete of the Year and finishes 3rd in the 800 meters at the nationals.
• Daniel Hand boys and girls lacrosse teams reach the Class M state finals. It is the first
time in league history one school has both teams reach the state finals.
• Xavier wins its fourth consecutive SCC wrestling title; as seven Falcons capture firstplace in their respective weight classes.
• Notre Dame-West Haven, Branford and Masuk win playoff titles in the second year of
the SCC-SWC Boys Ice Hockey League.
• Xavier wins its first SCC boys lacrosse title since 2001; defeating four-time defending
champion Fairfield Prep, 13-8, on May 28.
• The Hillhouse boys indoor track squad captures the SCC, Class M and State Open titles.
The Academics are the 2nd SCC team to do this.
• Branford boys soccer allows just 4 goals in 5 games to share the Class L state title.
• Notre Dame wins its first SCC golf title since 2001, finishing six strokes ahead of Fairfield Prep, Xavier and Daniel Hand on May 26.
• Amity Regional pitcher Katie Koshes does not allow a run in three games as the Spartans capture the SCC softball title.
• Led by SCC Player of the Year Julia Carr, Guilford girls soccer wins its second straight
league title with a 3-1 victory over Cheshire.
• Cheshire girls swimming wins its third-straight, and 20th overall, SCC title.
• Led by the two reigning SCC Players of the Year Lauren Cole (2014) and Erin Mammale (2015), Daniel Hand girls lacrosse won its 10th SCC title
with a 18-6 victory over Guilford on May 28.
• Shelton wins its first SCC boys volleyball title since 2008 with a 3-1 victory over Xavier on May 29.
• Mercy holds off Daniel Hand, 57-52, in the SCC Girls Basketball Championship game at Quinnipiac’s TD Bank Sports Center.
• Behind SCC Swimmer of the Year Bryce Keblish, Fairfield Prep captures its 11th straight boys swimming title on March 6.
• Cheshire doesn’t drop a game (in three matches) as it wins its fourth straight SCC girls volleyball title.
• Led by SCC Player of the Year and eventual State Open singles champion Jason Seidman, the Amity Regional boys tennis team captures the SCC
Division I and Class LL state titles.

Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists Awards
Comeback Players of the Year”
Three student athletes – Jack Cunningham (Cheshire), Kelly Nizolek (Daniel Hand) and Gabrielle Lamberti (East Haven) –
were the recipients of the 2015 SCC “Comeback Player of the Year” awards. All three students suffered severe injuries, yet were able to
overcome them to become outstanding role models in their respective schools.
A corporate sponsor of the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC), Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists P.C. (COS) has offered a Comeback Player of the Year Scholarship for student-athletes who participated in an interscholastic sport during the 2014-2015
academic year, and showed great leadership both on and off the field after their severe injury.
Coaches and school’s athletic directors nominated
these student-athletes after they each suffered an unfortunate injury that prohibited them from play for their high
school teams. All three received a financial scholarship to be
used for their college education.
"This is our fifth year in awarding student-athletes
from the SCC with scholarships,” explained Glenn Elia,
Chief Executive Officer of COS. “Our goal has been to
acknowledge student-athletes who have overcome the
challenges of an injury and, through hard work and determination, have become positive role models for their fellow
teammates."
“Many thanks to the doctors and staff at Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists for their support of the SCC and
these scholarships,” explained SCC Commissioner Al Carbone. “Our league has many outstanding student-athletes
who excel in the classroom and playing fields, while showing
perseverance and selflessness.”

season and was slated to miss the entire football season in the
fall for which he was named captain. Through his hard work
and determination, Jack was able to return and play well ahead of schedule, and was an impact performer – even scoring two touchdowns in his first game back. Cheshire football coach Don Drust said, “Jack is a natural leader and a driven individual. He has a great
outlook on life and understands if you work hard, good things will happen.”
Kelly Nizolek, Daniel Hand – field hockey and lacrosse
Kelly suffered a severe knee injury during the spring of 2013 which forced her to miss the 2013 field hockey and most of the
2014 lacrosse seasons. Her recovery was long and strenuous, but she persevered and returned to the varsity field hockey squad in 2014,
in which she helped the Tigers capture the SCC title and the Class M state championship – Daniel Hand’s first-ever state title. Daniel
Hand field hockey coach Sue Leckey said, “Kelly was determined to be bigger than the frustration by keeping her focus and determination to be an impact player for her team. She is a solid example of “nothing can take the place of persistence.” Kelly will attend The
Hotchkiss School in the fall for a post-graduate year of study and athletic competition.
Gabrielle Lamberti, East Haven – basketball
Gabby suffered a severe knee injury in late 2013 which caused her miss the 2013-14 basketball season. She worked tirelessly to
return to the squad, and even attended summer and fall pre-season games even though she couldn’t compete. Her dedication to her
rehabilitation allowed her to return to practice on the first day of the 2014-15 season. Her efforts helped her become a key member of
the team, which qualified for both the SCC and state tournaments. East Haven girls basketball coach Anthony Russell said, “Gabby’s
diligence and perseverance in both the classroom and on the
court is an inspiration to her teammates and classmates. A high
honors student, Gabby has big plans for her senior year and beyond with several top colleges (to major in nursing) in her sights.

“Scholar Athlete of the Month”
For the ninth year, the SCC partnered with The SportsCenter of Connecticut (www.sportscenterct.com)
on a Scholar Athlete of the Month program. A total of 126 student-athletes were recognized during the
2014–15 academic year. Each recipient received a certificate, t-shirt and SportsCenter activity pass.

SCC Postseason Facts
* In 2014-15, fourteen different SCC member schools won or shared a SCC playoff title.
* Mercy won the most league titles with five (girls cross country, girls outdoor track, girls basketball, Division II
girls tennis and girls outdoor track & field), followed by Amity Regional and Daniel Hand with four each.
* Along with its four league titles (boys cross country, baseball, softball and Division I boys tennis), Amity Regional had a league-best six
runner-up finishes.
* Fairfield Prep won its 11th straight boys swimming title - the longest current streak in the league.

2014-15 SCC State Championships
During the 2014-15 academic year, SCC teams won 22 state championships. The 22 state titles were tied for the third-highest total in
league history (the league record is 25, achieved in 1996-97 and 2011-12). Since the league’s inception in 1994-95, SCC schools (both full
and associate members) have won 401 state titles (124 fall, 150 in winter, 127 in spring).
