Dear readers Welcome to another incredible year for Robe – which has been our most successful yet for product development and business in key markets across all sectors! Global Network ROBE lighting is distributing directly all over the world through the stable network of distributors. As ideas and commerce continue to flourish, our dynamic and talented ‘Robe Family’ continues its dedication to building our brand with such a vitality and passion, taking it to new levels of visibility and excellence. The ROBIN product ranges have been expanded and further consolidated and continue to become even more established as market leaders for quality and innovation in their classes. There have also been some inventive and different additions to the product lines, to ensure that we can also offer more diversity and interesting applications of the technology and knowledge… whilst keeping our finger on the pulse of global visual design trends. The factory and HQ has seen a major expansion programme to boost the production capacities needed to keep pace with the growing demand for all our products. We wrapped up an amazing 2012 ‘Working With Winners’ - a highly appropriate motto - and steamed into 2013, experiencing the ‘best ever’ Prolight+Sound Exhibition in Frankfurt followed closely by hosting and co-organising a very memorable Showlight 2013 in Cesky Krumlov - a fantastic introduction to the Czech Republic for many guests. We go into PLASA 2013 in an exciting new venue… with a large and stylish new stand design, showcasing nine innovative new products! This year we also intend to launch new products at LDI, reflecting our growing success in the Americas – both North and South. As always at this time, I’d personally like to say a massive ‘thank-you’ to all those designers, creative and artistic directors, installers, distributors, rental and production companies who have invested imagination, time and energy in using and promoting our products worldwide. We also know that nothing stays still, and that to sustain, we need to continue the process of actively listening to the constant feedback and communication on all levels, keep this process proactive and bi-directional and take note of the opinions, thoughts and demands. We have our ears and eyes open! I also want to thank each and every one of the Robe Family members involved from our side - all the distributors and our staff locally and internationally. Everyone at Robe is vital to its strength and vibrancy, all are appreciated and valued, and I am extremely proud to share my world with some very special individuals. p s. When introducing last year‘s annual printed newsletter, we made a point of saying that it was the largest and most diverse to date... and we are very proud to be able say this year’s edition surpasses that - with more pages and featuring an even greater selection of projects from around the world. EVENTS 42 –65 It’s been another year of incredible hard work and major global achievements by all in the Robe Family, and this is reflected in the content of the Newsletter. Every page jumps out with the vibrancy and enthusiasm that characterises our incredible team of distributors, customers and end users. The last 12 months have been hugely proactive on all fronts and it’s been another record-breaking success in terms of business and bringing new products and innovation to the market. The ROBIN series has expanded and become even more established across all markets worldwide, endorsing Robe’s winning concept of producing ‘smaller, brighter, lighter’ fixtures based on genuinely more ecofriendly technologies. T E L E V I SI O N 66 – 79 The LEDWash series continues as Robe’s biggest selling product and is recognised as a high quality cuttingedge LED lightsource, while the new ‘workhorse’ ROBIN MMX Spot and WashBeam sales reinforce the place and demand for properly multi-purpose fixtures, together with the DL series, our first high powered LED moving head series which has been expanded to include Spot, Profile and Wash versions. The tiny, super-speedy LEDBeam 100 continues to be popular... and while all this has been going on, Robe developed and launched the much anticipated Pointe - a completely unique multi-purpose fixture that delivers more Robe quality engineering and real value for money - Wash, Beam and FX all in one super-bright, compact fixture. Robe had high expectations for the Pointe, but no-one could have quite predicted the reaction and the consequent sales and demand! 80 – 85 Meanwhile details of exciting projects continue to pour into the Robe News Room daily. T H E AT RE Highlights are hard to pick - from the smallest, most inventive shows - see ‘Swedish Royal Flush’ and installations using just a few fixtures to major extravaganzas and some of the world’s best known music festivals - see Glastonbury, Tomorrowland, Ultra - our products are out there! Just recently we’ve landed some major tours in the Americas which is very exciting! Bandit Lites Inc. - a major US rental operation - has invested in over 80 of the newest fixtures including Pointes, which were specified for the Selena Gomez ‘Stars Dance’ world tour by Creative Director and Production Designer Seth Jackson and Lighting Designer Nathan W Scheuer. CLUB 86 – 89 In Mexico, over 230 fixtures - including 92 Pointes - will be in action on the Alejandro Fernandez tour which is designed by Belgian LD Alain Corthout. The Robe kit is all being supplied by Guadalajara based Procolor who have made this serious investment. 90 –93 Even in a short space of time since its launch, many shows and events are getting the Pointe… including David Guetta in Hannover; the CMT Awards in Nashville Tennessee; the MTV Upfront Presentations at the Beacon Theatre in New York; Portishead at the 2013 Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts and the ‘house’ lighting rig for the recent Eden Sessions in Cornwall - both in the UK; Ampco Flashlight, Holland‘s leading rental company, just purchased 100 and the list is growing daily as rental operations of all sizes snap up Pointes for their stocks! Everywhere and in all sectors, lighting designers from all disciplines - live shows and events, television, theatre and the arts, installations - are using Robe products to realise their imaginative visions. C HU RC H Other than that, 2012/13 has seen other landmarks for Robe, one of which was hosting and co-organising the quadrennial Showlight symposium in Český Krumlov in May 2013. Apart from supporting the show, which was invigorating and proved a great forum for discussion, the interchange of ideas and sharing of knowledge and information between established and future industry professionals, it gave many first time visitors to the Czech Republic a snapshot of what the country has to offer in terms of natural beauty, culture, heritage, charm and future industry and commerce. Český Krumlov with its beautiful surroundings, Baroque Theatre, magnificent Castle and Open Air Theatre with revolving auditorium provided more than a little Czech magic to WOW the attendees, many of whom then visited our factory afterwards. VEN U E 94 –99 Ahead of Frankfurt 2013, Robe held its fifth biennial international Dealer Conference (IDC) which was attended by nearly 200 Family Members from around the globe. A special dinner and Awards evening provided a great chance to say ‘thanks’ to everyone for all the foresight and hard work as part of one amazing team! Robe goes into PLASA 2013 showing nine exciting new products to further strengthen the range… and huge amounts of positive energy for 2014 and the future. ABOUT ROBE 1 Robe LEDWash 600s Shine for Beyoncé UK based Lighting Designer Al Gurdon utilized 52 x Robe ROBIN LEDWash 600 fixtures to line the perimeter of the main stage in his stunning design for the 2013 Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show. Super Bowl XLVII was held at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans with global music icon and 16 time Grammy Award winning Beyoncé topping the Half Time Show bill. Her show-stopping performance has been acclaimed by many as the ‘best ever’ Half Time show! It was broadcast worldwide… and is the most-watched musical event of the year! Apart from that, the game itself pulled an impressive 108.4 million viewers. It was the fourth time that Al Gurdon has lit the Half Time event, an NFL Production executive produced by Ricky Kirshner and directed by Hamish Hamilton. He used the LEDWash 600s on the floor to side and back light Beyonce and the dancers, “I like the LEDWash 600 because it’s a really bright unit for its size,” he comments. Al’s first experience with the LEDWash series was using both the 600 and 1200 LEDWash fixtures on Madonna’s recent MDNA tour. The luminaires were supplied by Los Angeles based rental company VER to main lighting contractors PRG, who have been major investors in Robe’s new ROBIN series products. Momoiro Clover Z Robe Loves Momoiro Clover Z! Momoiro Clover Z, one of Japan’s most popular girl-groups, performed their largest concert to date at the Saitama Seibu Dome in Japan in front of an impressive live audience of 37,000… lit with nearly 400 Robe moving lights in a design by Hirotaka Kojima from lighting company JSS. The show – also broadcast in several movie theatres around Hong Kong and Taiwan – was the final date on their 2012 Summer Dive tour and was performed in-the-round. The girl’s lively set embraced numerous costume changes and some properly crazy behavior in an epic set lasting four hours and containing 26 pumped-up numbers! Naturally, the lighting design had to keep pace with all the action onstage and so Hirotaka Kojima needed maximum flexibility and multiple options in his lighting rig, which was supplied by Tokyo based rental company, M-Tech Style. M-Tech Style’s Yo-Ichi Ashikawa recommended the Robe fixtures to him as the best choices to promote the cheerful, up-beat summer party vibes. The fixture count included 120x ROBIN 600 LEDWashes, 18x ROBIN 300 LEDWashes and 24x ROBIN 1200 LEDWashes plus 40x LEDBeam 100s, 48x ColorSpot 700E ATs, 22x ColorWash 700E ATs. A further 110x LEDForce 18s were placed on the stage and five runways off it reaching out into the audience. Hirotaka Kojima was impressed with the energy efficiency of the Robe LED fixtures together with their small size and powerful outputs. The sale involved 16x Pointes, 18x LEDWash 600s, 12x LEDWash 1200s and 36x LEDBeam 100s, which were delivered to Bandit by Robe Lighting Inc., coordinated by Eastern Region Business Development Manager, Kevin Loretto. Jackson’s very talented creative team for this tour includes Scheuer, Video & Media Designer Brent Sandrock and Lighting Director David "Fuji" Convertino who will be out on the road with the equipment. It is the first time that Jackson and Scheuer are working with Robe products. They both visited the Robe e factory in Valašské Meziříčí, Czech Republic earlier in the year, which proved an eye-opening experience. e. Says Jackson, “We saw the manufacturing process and the care and meticulous attention that goes into o every fixture. We met with Robe’s engineers, designers, product development team, sales and support rt staff with CEO Josef Valchar always at our side. Everyone’s dedication to the company sent us away y with a real appreciation for the uniqueness of what Robe is doing and the elegance and quality of what at they are building”. As a result, they decided to incorporate many of the Robe products into the tour design. The annual three day event is organised by vzw Beachvolley Deluxe and a dedicated team of volunteers headed by Stijn Saliem. It celebrated its 14th glorious year, welcoming over 200 teams and up to 1000 spectators a day to enjoy some superlative beach volleyball action! Frederik’s design was based around a Robe moving light rig. Lighting is crucial to highlighting the volleyball players naturalistically during the daytime matches and also for creating a cool and cosy ambience for two beach parties – the largest attended by 6,000 revellers! An elegant tensile roof structure ideally lends itself to being coloured and textured with lighting and effects. The 12 Robe Pointes were rigged on a series of drop bars coming off the roof and over-stage trusses, together with the other Robe fixtures, which included 16x ROBIN Spot 600Es and 18x LEDWash 600s. “The brightness was fantastic and the zoom excellent,” Frederik declared after the gig! Baal might be decidedly landlocked, but the spirit of the beach lived on complete with a fully sanded venue, volleyball courts and the two parties staged on the Friday and Saturday nights, complete with an all-action DJ line up. The first was a one off concert for 8000 fan club members at the Seoul Stadium in Jamsil and the second was at the City Hall in Seoul Plaza, attended by 80,000 people who enjoyed a lively show including Psy’s block-busting international number one, ‘Gangnam Style’. Equipment was supplied by rental company LiteFactory. Thirty-six Robe MMX Spots and 24 LEDWash 600s were among lighting specified for the shows by Myeong Soo Kim, and were the core of the rig, chosen for their brightness and versatility. LiteFactory, owned by Mr Doochul Shin, has a large stock of Robe fixtures in its rental fleet and has been a loyal advocate of the brand for around 10 years! Myeong Soo Kim also programmed and operated lighting for these concerts. He likes the flexibility and numerous options offered by the MMX Spot which he regularly uses in combination with Robe LEDWash 600s. Myeong Soo Kim used the Robes to the max - lots of beam technology, gobo and animation work with the MMXs - contrasted with vibrant colour washes from the LEDWashes bathing the stage in a rich palette of colours, from the deepest saturates to the most delicate pastels. Hogan was turned on to the features and functionality of Robe products - specifically the best-selling LEDWash 600 - by LMG Touring, a national provider of video, audio and lighting equipment, and the lighting, video and LED vendor for this Train tour. Hogan’s aesthetic starting point for lighting was to create a ‘big rock show’ look with plenty of colour, movement and spectacle - bold and effective! From the outset he had the LEDWash’s individual ring control in mind to use for some specific effects, in particular songs. He evolved a unique ‘eyeball’ effect for the raw, moody “Ordinary” (from the soundtrack of the Spiderman 2 movie) with the inner ring in red and the outer in white – which worked exceptionally well. For “Calling All Angels” he produced eye-catching halo effects with the rings, which also went down fabulously with the crowds! Additionally, he used crazy chases across the rings to enhance the onstage energy for dramatic moments of the show, like drum solos. He loves the light weight, brightness and versatility of the LEDWash 600. He also appreciates the homogenised light engine, the seamlessly smooth colour mixing and the fact that the lightsource resembles a real lamp with a beam rather than a collection of LEDs. The theatrical-grade dimming is another big bonus. EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED BY LOCATION 28x ROBIN ® 600 LEDWash™ Robe Lighting Inc. US tour STAGE 7 Vasco Rossi Live With Robe! Iconic Italian rock singer Vasco Rossi played seven sold out stadium shows, making a breath-taking live ‘come-back’ to mark the latest episode of his colourful 35 year career. A stunning lighting design by Giovanni Pinna included a unique back wall feature, created using 76x Robe ROBIN 100 LEDBeams. Pinna also seized the opportunity to live debut the first Robe’s new ROBIN Pointe fixtures in Italy. The triangular shaped upstage LEDBeam 100 matrix was revealed eight songs into the set and used for around 80% of the lighting ‘specials’ thereafter. He hit on the triangular shaped LEDBeam matrix idea as something to contrast and complement the Vasco logo, and that could be used for a number of tasks including adding accents and punctuations like bumping and strobing to the music. The LEDBeam 100s were mounted on a custom frame made by Rome based lighting rental contractor Limelight, and covered an area approximately 14.5 metres at the base and 12 metres high, offset from each other by 90 and 60 centimetres. It received a massive roar from the crowd the first time it was used, but the trick that Pinna weaved so well into the whole presentation… was simply not to over-do it! He likes everything about the little LEDBeam 100 fixtures, “Fast, powerful, colourful – simply a GREAT fixture,” he enthused with a characteristic smile! The speed at which the LEDBeams move and bump on and off enabled him to produce some wild effects. EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED BY LOCATION 8 STAGE 76x ROBIN ® 100 LEDBeam™ Robe Multimeda Italy Mumford & Sons Robe Stampedes Summer with Mumford & Sons Grammy and Brit Award-winning UK folk rock phenomena, Mumford & Sons, continued their action packed touring schedule with a string of Canadian and US shows… with Robe LEDWash moving lights once again a prominent feature in the design by New York based LD Ed Warren of Next Level Lights. Warren’s starting point for this instalment of the on-going tour was “Let’s kick some serious festival ass with true tungsten power”. For at least the past 12 months, Warren’s Mumford lighting schemes have contained evolutions based on different variants of tungsten. He is a big fan of its softness, subtleties and specific qualities. For this Canadian / US section 16x Robe ROBIN 600 LEDWashes and 14x Robe ROBIN 1200 LEDWashes were incorporated into the design, supplied by lighting and sound contractors, Solotech. Robe’s LEDWash fixtures have constantly appeared on the Mumford & Sons’ lighting spec since the start of the ‘Babel’ album tour cycle 12 months ago. Warren “Loves” them “Like a long lost brother”. This is mainly due to the LEDWash series’ excellent tungsten emulation, and he also finds the individual ring control invaluable for introducing an intricate and different style of movement to the performance. He even created his very own lightbulb effect using the innermost LED chipset of the LEDWashes in 3.200°K tungsten. “Most people actually believed they were some sort of genuine tungsten source, like a light bulb minus the filament”, he revealed. Legendary Canadian rock band Rush took to the road again on their ‘Clockwork Angels’ world tour, complete with Robe LEDWash 600 moving lights on the rig, specified by lighting and show designer, Howard Ungerleider. Peumans’ award winning creative lighting and visual design practice Painting With Light is based in Genk, Belgium, and the show is on a five year international tour, produced by Netherlands based Stage Entertainment Touring Productions. It was the first time that Toronto based Howard has specified Robe’s ROBIN 600 LEDWash. Forty-eight LEDWash 600s were integral to the show, rigged onto four triangular shaped trusses flown at different heights and used for side washes and for beaming into the audience. Howard loves the way that the LEDWash can resemble the specific “silky and velvety” textures and light qualities of a PAR 64. “You would never think it was an LED source!” he affirms. Peumans chose 60 LEDWash 1200s together with 20 LEDWash 600s for the show’s touring rig. The LEDWash 1200s are distributed in the roof trusses and used for multiple colours and combinations that literally ‘paint’ the ice with light! These are also used to follow the flying performers and to pinpoint ‘specials’ positions for all the main characters – as truly multi-tasking tools. Six LEDWash 1200s backstage rear-light the main inflatable rock-face set element and more fixtures are behind the upstage video wall which opens and closes for entrances / exits. The LEDWash 600s are positioned around the perimeter of the ice for shooting low level lighting across it. Peumans is delighted with the LEDWash 1200s and particularly likes the fact that utilising the 8 – 63 degree zoom - the beam will go into a tight spot as well as producing its excellent wash. Lighting equipment is supplied by Lier, Antwerp based Phlippo Showlight, who have invested heavily in Robe over the last 12 months. Howard first saw the LEDWash 600 at PLASA 2011. Soon after, he and his long term Lead Programmer, Tim Grivas, visited the factory in Valasske Mezirici and saw Robe’s production process in action – with which they were highly impressed. They also discussed specific products and their requirements at length with Robe CEO, Josef Valchar, and after this visit, Howard specified the LEDWash 600s for “Clockwork Angels”. The US lighting vendor for “Clockwork Angels” was Nashvillebased Premier Global Productions. EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED BY LOCATION 48x ROBIN ® 600 LEDWash™ Robe Lighting Inc. World tour Photo Credit © Howard Ungerleider STAGE 11 First Robe MMX WashBeams in Benelux Benelux continued to break new ground throughout the last year for Robe sales… The first concert staged in the newly refurbished and re-launched Het Depot in Leuven, just outside Brussels, Belgium, featured four performances by hot emerging young Belgian singer / songwriter Selah Sue. Robe fixtures were an integral part of Selah Sue’s show – her lighting designer Joris Vandamme used 12 x ROBIN 600 LEDWashes on floor stands as a ‘specials’ package. He also used eight Robe MMX Spots installed as part of a new lighting rig at Het Depot along with Robe Actor 6 units. Additionally, the first of Robe’s new MMX WashBeams in Belgium were made available for these Het Depot shows by special arrangement with Robe’s Benelux distributor, Controllux. Sint-Niklaas-based Vandamme has designed Selah Sue’s lighting for the last two years, and he’s been using Robe products for about the same period. “They are very flexible, robust well-priced moving lights,” he comments. The 12 LEDWash 600 ‘specials’ were rigged on four floor stands positioned asymmetrically around the stage and used for multiple effects as well as for close-up washes on Selah Sue – who prefers minimal front lighting - and her four piece band. The quirky angles of the stands and the physically low levels of the lightsources as they swept dramatically across the stage enhanced the extreme intimacy of the performance. The lighting rig was designed by Dalibor Radic and included 24 Robe MMX Spots which were central to the look and feel of the show. They were supplied, along with the rest of the technical production package, by leading creation rental company Eldra, based in Bregana. Over 200 metres of trussing was installed for the show to provide positions for lighting, PA and LED screens. It was Dalibor’s first work for the artist and her 11 piece band, and his brief was to make the stage as dynamic as possible with lots of big, bold pop-tastic looks, colour and movement to cover the lively, largely up-tempo performance. He specified the ROBIN MMXs because off their massive light output, the fabulous dual graphics / animation wheel and other effects, the low weight and speed and most importantly – reliability. Dalibor has been using Robe products for about a year now and is very impressed all round. Also appreciating the quality engineering and the fact that they are constantly in demand as a rental stock item, is Eldra’s co-owner Damir Drazic. Northern Irish band Two Door Cinema Club continued their ‘Beacon’ world tour with a very cool lighting design by Squib (Chris Swain) which included 32x Robe LEDBeam 100s and ten Robe MMX Spots, all supplied by UK rental company Siyan. The rig also contained several other Robe fixtures, including five DigitalSpot 7000 DTs, which together with the DLF Washes lit and projected on to a scenic back wall above and behind the band constructed from ten Airformance Design ‘Waben Blocks’. Squib is a relative newcomer to using Robe fixtures, and it was the latest ROBIN series that caught his eye and encouraged him to look further at what the brand had to offer. The rig needed to be diverse enough to produce a full range of colourful and eye-catching looks for the high-energy lively, dancey and up-tempo set. Based on three overhead trusses, there were ten LEDBeam 100s each on the mid and back ones, with the remaining 12 units rigged on top of a custom ground-supported structure containing 18 strings of MiStrip video product. Sinclair sought a fixture that was light in weight and high in output specifically for hanging on the front truss as he wanted to be able to isolate and neatly light areas of the Waben Blocks. All lighting and digital lighting equipment for the tour was supplied by Blackburn-based HSL. Their Project Manager, Mike Oates. suggested he check out the DLFs, which had just been delivered to HSL and were the first available for touring in the UK. “They are nice and bright and can produce a fabulous array of colours,” comments Rob. The tour also featured 28x Robe LEDWash 600s, dotted over all the mid and back trusses, together with 12x ROBIN 300E Beams. The two types of fixture colour match each other seamlessly, while the different beams are a good contrast. They were used for numerous effects and looks throughout the set, and their miniscule size and high intensity are ideal features for tours like this that play a heterogeneity of venue sizes. However small or large the room, with 32 LEDBeam 100s the rig always has the appearance of being much larger than it actually is! The tour’s floor ‘specials’ package version of the specification contained 20x LEDBeam 100s which could be taken and used virtually everywhere – drawing an equally tiny amount of power! The tour played arenas throughout the Czech and Slovak Republics including Prague’s 18,000 capacity O2 venue. Gott is the Czech Republic’s most successful and best known singer. His impressive international career spans six decades during which time he’s been at the forefront of many new and innovative musical trends, including pioneering emerging Czechoslovakian pop music in the early 1960s. His numerous recordings have sold millions worldwide. Lighting equipment was supplied by Prague based rental company Audioblue Productions SRO, who have serviced Gott’s live shows for several years. The moving lights comprised 22 x Robe ROBIN MMX Spots, 12 x ROBIN LEDWash 300s, nine LEDWash 1200s and eight ROBIN 600E Beams, all of which were spread out over trusses - above the stage and hung vertically at the back - with the LEDWash 300s on the floor. Hořák and Mácha chose Robe because the fixtures are “Rock solid reliable” and due to the vast amount of creative options that the Robe units offer in lighting Gott’s diverse show, which embraces multiple musical styles and genres. Each song had its own very distinctive look and feel. The mediums of lighting and video visuals were a big part of a highly entertaining set that kept Gott’s enthusiastic fanbase – young and old - enrapt. The show ‘visuality’ also succeeded in the challenging task of transforming the many barn-like ice hockey arenas on the itinerary into more intimate concert environments! They made the most of the dual graphics wheel on the MMX Spots for adding texture on the stage floor and central runway, and also frequently beamed the fixtures out into the audience and up onto the roof of the venues. Hořák and Mácha created some way cool effects by combining the 600E beams with smoke, and maximised the individual ring control of the LEDWash 1200s which were used to bring general theatrical ambience to the stage and bathe it in a fabulous range of colours. They also found the MMX Spot’s hot spot control very useful. Lighting on the road was operated by Ladislav Hořák using a grandMA2 light console with MA2 OnPC for backup. Audioblue has invested in the latest Robe ROBIN technology in the last year, but their association with Robe goes back a lot further – they bought their first Robe AT Series fixtures over seven years ago. These are still in very active service, and the ruggedness and quality engineering of the products has kept them returning for more! Lighting was designed by Richard G Jones, who was asked on-board by Show Director (and Judge) Craig Revel Horwood last year. The two have worked together on several musicals, and Revel Horwood’s brief to Richard was : “Three words dah-ling – Theatrical, Theatrical and THE-A-TRI-CAL!!!” Jones ensured that no-one was disappointed, creating a show awash with colour, movement, drama and pizzazz to match all the dancefloor action, energy and high jinks! All lighting, sound & rigging equipment was supplied by south Wales based rental and production company, Sonalyst. The 14x MMX WashBeams together with 23x Robe ROBIN MMX Spots were newly purchased by Sonalyst for their hire stock – which now contains almost 300 moving lights. There were over 100 otherr Robes on the Strictly Live touring rig, including 30x ColorSpot 2500E ATs, 56x ColorWash 2500E ATs and d 28x silver ColorBeam 700E ATs located around the perimeter of the 40 x 20 metre dancefloor. The lighting rig was designed by Meelis Lusmägi and the event produced by Meedaekspress Ltd. Lusmägi’s brief was to produce a big, bold, stylishly spectacular club style lightshow in the voluminous sports arena which is the largest such venue in Estonia. Lighting equipment was supplied by locally based rental companies Cuuclub Ltd and E & T Light, both from Tallinn. He chose 24x Robe ROBIN MMX Spots and 12 of Robe’s new MMX WashBeam fixtures, together with 40x ROBIN 100 LEDBeams and 12x Robe ColorSpot 1200E ATs. The moving lights were flown above the stage on trusses, with some on the floor. The LEDBeam 100s whizzed around providing cross stage lighting and patterns. The MMX Spots were rigged on the overhead trussing at the back and used to light the stage and the dancers, and also for WOW moments shooting out into the audience and the MMX WashBeams on the floor upstage of the DJ booth created high-impact aerial effects. Lusmägi likes the beam effects that can be created with the MMX WashBeams, and these and the MMX Spots were ideal for the dancey up-tempo vibes, edginess, innovation and attitude of Chase & Status’s music. Robe moving lights were used by lighting designer Marko Malesevic from Studio Berar – also the lighting rental contractor - as part of the rig for a massive performance by Balkan superstar singer Svetlana Ceca Raznatovic. The tour’s lighting and visual design was created by Bruce Ramus, and Lighting Director / Operator on the road was Simon ‘Junior’ Johnson, with lighting and video equipment provided by Melbourne based Powa Productions. Ramus had an open brief to come up with a scheme to help make the show rock at the start of the live campaign promoting Sebastian’s latest number one album ‘Armageddon’. Ramus had used Robe moving lights on the last two of Sebastian’s tours –his first encounter with Robe products and particularly liked the LEDWash 600, so he decided to spec these again. The enormous open air concert was staged by Miligram Music on a site at Usce in Belgrade at the confluence of the Rivers Danube and Sava… and attended by an enthusiastic audience of around 100,000. The pressure was on to ensure that it was a memorable event for everyone – all of those experiencing it live, plus the additional hundreds of thousands more watching on TV. The rig contained 20x Robe LEDWash 600s together with nine ColorSpot 700E ATs and nine ROBIN MMX Spots. The LEDWash 600s provided base wash looks. Six were positioned on the floor either side of stage and used for side washes, with 14 rigged on two different levels across the back wall, poking through the gaps between the video screens. This positioning of the lights enabled him to create some funky, integrated, organic looks combining the video content and the LEDWashes. He found different beam shapes available on the LEDWash 600s “Really useful” adding, “They are bright and have a good range of pastels as well as saturates”. Robe UK’s own Ian W Brown took his tent, clothes-pegs and Wellies and got into the festival spirit, where a very iffy start weather-wise came good with sunshine, soaring temperatures and sizzling expectations! Supplying lighting to the main stage at The Park area was South West Lighting, with a production design created by Ben Perrin and Mark Bott. This involved 24x Robe LEDBeam 100s, eight LEDWash 600s, four LEDWash 1200s and ten each of ColorSpot and ColorWash 700E ATs. The numerous features, nooks, crannies, hideaways and eclectic spaces around the Park including the entrance arch, Ribbon Tower and Glasto sign were designed by Misty Buckley and lit by Simon Marcus, MD of Enlightened Lighting from nearby Bath, using a plethora of Anolis fixtures. While Simon enjoyed the relaxed vibe on ‘the hill’ at the Park, Enlightened’s Dave Thorpe looked after the ‘wild’ East side of site - and The Common in particular, where they supplied Robe moving lights to the two main venues, The Temple and the Rave Cave. Moving further into site and staying in Enlightened territory the Glasto Latino Tent was lit with Robes operated by David Johnson – one of Robe’s PLASA 2012 student team. The late night environment Mavericks had a full rig of Robes including LEDWash 600s, ROBIN 600E Spots and two Pointes, co-ordinated by LD Anthony van Sertima. Next up was the Summerhouse, a day and night outdoor venue featuring multiple off-beat bands, music and performance in the Outdoor Theatre area - lit with ColorSpot 1200E ATs and LEDWash 300s. Bringing the Enlightened team back to The Park, the Silent Disco was jauntily lit with some of their Robe 250 Scans dusted off for the occasion but still going strong after all these years! Enlightened fielded a crew of 16 for Glasto 2013 and they were absolutely “Delighted with their new Pointes”, stated Dave. Fineline – one of two rental companies who were ‘The First’ to receive new Robe Pointes in the UK, lit the Circus, Cabaret, Theatre and Acoustic Stages as they have in past years, again n with a healthy complement of Robes. On the West Holts Stage (formally known as Jazz World), DPL L supplied Robe ColorSpot 1200E ATs, which were given a good workout by LD Adam Powers, and overr on the John Peel Stage, LD Cate Carter included LEDWash 1200s on her lighting rig spec. Twenty-four LEDBeam 100s were positioned on verticals trusses at the back and used for blasting sharp, blisteringly intense columns of light forward onto the stage and into the audience. Over 80,000 rockers gathered to enjoy a wide selection of metal genre artists which included headliners The Scorpions, Machine Head, Sepultura and many others over three days. Lighting for the double-staged Bullhead Arena was supplied by Crystal Sound from Karlsruhe. An impressive cityscape set was designed by Thomas Bartz from Konzeptsache Berlin and two side-by-side stages were linked with a mesh-clad Layher scaffolding structure in the middle. The Robes included 40x MMX Spots, 46x ROBIN 600 Beams and 30x LEDWash 600s. The MMX Spots were used as eye-catching upstage effects on the two stages while the 600 Beams were used to produce various spectacular looks on the Layher structure. The LEDWash 600s blasted powerful beams out into the audience enveloping them in the atmosphere via a blanket of saturated colour. The equipment was specified by André Ballweg, Crystal Sound’s Lighting Project Manager for the event. These were integral to the respective lighting rigs used to illuminate a truly stellar line up of international and local artists, enjoyed by around 60,000 people a day who flocked to see the action across the event’s four performance stages. F ES T IVA L S F ES T IVA L S Ultra Festival Lighting designer Richard Neville incorporated nearly 300 Robe moving lights into his design for the Main Stage of the 2013 Ultra Festival staged at Bayfront Park in Miami, which included 176x LEDBeam 100s incorporated into a custom stage set. The six day event is one of the highest profile EDM (Electronic Dance Music) events in the world. This year’s truly stellar line up over the two weekends included David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, Avicii, and many more who rocked the house big style. Ultra 2013 was brought to a tumultuous close by the VERY final gig by The Swedish House Mafia … giving a characteristically show-stopping performance. It is the first year that Sydney, Australia based Neville, associate designer Alex Grierson and Neville’s company Mandylights have designed for Ultra, brought on-board by the event’s producers James Klein and Bruce Rodgers. Neville is well known for his work designing lighting for EDM and stadium rave events across Australia, Asia and the Pacific Rim, and he and Klein worked closely on the production design for the Main stage. He has been using Robe products for some time – specially the LEDWash series - and when confirmed for Ultra, the brief was to create something unique, different and truly spectacular with production values topping the agenda. The 200 ft wide set was built by TAIT and included the 176 scenic pyramids each of which were clad in 40 panels of Tait’s now famous Pixel Tablets. Neville wanted a super-bright fixture to go in the middle of these and tested a number of options, including the LEDBeam 100, which was supplied for the trials in Australia by Robe’s distributor there, The ULA Group. Although the LEDBeam 100 was a new fixture to him, he was already familiar with Robe’s build quality through using the LEDWashes. He liked the quality of the light output, the range of “Solid” colours – which are consistent across the whole range of ROBIN fixtures - and the highly efficient colour mixing. The light weight was also essential to enable 176 to be utilised on the structure without significantly adding to the rigging requirements! He also really likes the phenomenally fast speed of the LEDBeam 100. “It’s been super-reliable and a great effect,” he confirms, “As I knew it would be”. Lighting for the Main Stage was controlled via four grandMA full size consoles, two active and two running in full tracking backup. In addition to the LEDBeams being controlled conventionally via the lighting desk, Neville and Grierson could switch to taking the ‘colour’ parameter from the show‘s Hippotizer media servers - mapped across the entire set structure and fed with video content - and produce some truly stunning and wild effects! The design also utilised 25x LEDWash 1200s and 89x LEDWash 600s which were dotted all over the rig. The Festival was a massive success all round and was enjoyed by 300,000 people. The party was enjoyed by a capacity audience of 20,000 with a production lighting design created by Martin Kuhn. The Robe fixtures were central to the action in the Ostfunk, Planet Bass and House Floor arenas. Berlin and Mexico based Kuhn was commissioned by event promoter A&P to create a fantastic visual ambience for the Summer Rave. The Planet Bass Arena featured 96x Robe ROBIN 100 LEDBeams; on the Ostfunk Stage were 60x ROBIN MMX Spots and in the House Floor arena, 48x ROBIN 600 LEDWashes. Lights were supplied by Black Box Music from Berlin. In Planet Bass, the LEDBeam 100s were spec’d for their bright and very tight beams and speed - all ideal parameters for lighting EDM and specifically edgy drum ‘n’ bass acts! They were scattered around on different roof trusses. The MMX Spots in the Ostfunk arena were selected for their power and the dynamics of the in-air gobo kits which were fitted to all 60 fixtures. The 48 LEDWash 600s on the House Floor were used to bathe the audience with a rich assortment of kinetic colours. Sao Paolo based LPL Professional (LPL) provided the lights. The main stage lighting production was a collaboration between LPL and the event’s two LDs - Summer and Pascal - who also ran lighting and visuals on the night. The Brazilian edition of Skol Sensation - the event originated in Amsterdam and is staged worldwide - is one of the most sumptuous dance music extravaganzas of the year, packed with beautiful people. The main stage was 360º and built on four levels. Lighting included a total of 32x ROBIN MMX Spots, 18x ColorSpot 1200s and 18x ROBIN LEDWash 600s. Four smaller B-Stages were each lit with four Robe ColorSpot 1200E AT; ten trussing towers were dotted around the venue all rigged with six ColorSpot 2500E ATs, and four LEDWash 600s were used to illuminate the dancefloor. Last but not least, two alfresco areas were each lit with ten ColorWash 2500E ATs and four VIP areas with three Robin LEDWash 600s. The theme for this year was ‘Innerspace’, a journey through the seven stages of enlightenment celebrating the ‘Now’, with guests required to follow the all-white dress-code making them an ideal lighting and projection surface for fully immersive visuals! Lighting Designer and operator David Smeets of TCF placed Robe moving lights at the heart of his design for the Main Stage at the 2013 Reggae festival in Geel, Belgium. Headliners included Pentateuch, Iba Mahr & Dubtronic Kru, Ironites, Freddie McGregor and many more. The event was attended by over 250,000 people across four days and broadcast on Red Globo TV. Salvador, Bahia based Luzbel timed their latest purchase of Robe luminaires especially to be able to put the new units on the high profile event’s main stage which featured a production lighting specification by one of their technician’s, Junior. It follows Luzbel’s initial investment in Robe’s ColorSpot 1200E AT and ColorBeam 700E AT units two years ago … and the excellent results they have had using these! Lighting equipment was provided by L&L Stage Services from Herentals and capacity crowds of 35,000 enjoyed the summer heatwave, the picturesque and funky location and a sizzling line up! The festival bills itself as the ‘most laid back’ in the country! The Robe units were used by all the guest Lighting Designers working at the Festival de Salvador – which included performances by top Brazilian artists including Ivete Sangalo, Chiclete com Banana, Ana Carolina, Capital Inicial, Jorge e Mateus, Aviões do Forró, Gusttavo Lima, Claudia Leite and Asa de Águia… and many more. When specifying the rig, Junior explains that he proposed that all bands used the same lighting fixtures, a concept very well received by every lighting designer involved. The MMX Spots and 24 x ColorBeam 700E ATs were used for powerful general effects and beam looks, while the ROBIN 100 LEDBeams were worked hard to create attractive back-lighting for the television cameras. This year’s design was based on being flexible and appropriate for lighting 8 – 10 different live artists a day and also adding a distinctly reggae vibe to the aesthetics. He used 18 Robe 600E Spots and 18 Robe LEDWash 600s from Robe’s ROBIN range, together with a selection of generic fixtures and strobes. He had to maximise a relatively expedient amount of lights, but with Robes on the plot, there were numerous creative options! The moving lights were rigged on a front truss and a shallow box truss covering upstage and mid-stage which was gently raked. He likes the speed of the 600E Spots plus, the colour mixing and the good selection of gobos. On the LEDWashes, having a full beam – which looks like a real beam of light – coming out of the fixture looking solid and in one colour is very important. The venue is a UNESCO World Heritage site and this high profile annual cultural event was broadcast live on national TV and radio and around the world via various satellite channels. EVENTS EVENTS Robe fixtures lit three key areas in Schönbrunn Palace’s extensive and beautiful gardens - the main stage; the flower beds left and right of this and the fabulous Neptunbrunnen Fountains which are behind the stage. It was the fourth year that Vienna based Krammer has lit the Concert, which was enjoyed by an estimated 15,000 hardy classical music lovers … who braved the inclement weather for the evening! He has been using Robe products constantly in his work for the last five years and chose Robe again following the great results achieved in 2011 and 2012. The 54x ROBIN 600 LEDWashes, 50x ROBIN MMX WashBeams, 18x LEDBeam 100s, 16x ROBIN MMX Spots and five ColorSpot 1200E ATs were all supplied by rental company Niclen from Dortmund, Germany. Krammer drew on a fusion of practical, ornamental and architectural lighting disciplines… with spectacular results. The LEDWash 600s were used to colour the large flower beds flanking the stage with a series of shades, hues and bold, dramatic shafts and slices of light. These were especially useful for the wide camera shots which swept in and out showing the full scale of the impressive event space. Right at the rear of the flower beds he placed the LEDBeam 100s – nine a side - which “Blew everyone away” with their small size and extreme power! The MMXs were used to add sophisticated texturing to the Neptune Fountains – making the most of the dual graphics wheel system. The 50 MMX WashBeams were located around the rim of the fountains and used to produce dazzling mid-air effects which looked great both live and on camera. The ColorSpot 1200E ATs reinforced lighting on the main stage. The classical repertoire for the evening, under the baton of Lorin Maazel featured compositions from operatic genii Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner, both celebrating their bicentennials this year, which needed special treatment. It was about creating a total environment for the event rather than highlighal. ting the orchestra as the centre of attention, with lighting absolutely vital in achieving this aesthetic goal. DKrammer enjoyed using the new Robe MMX WashBeams in particular and the MMX Spot and the LEDWash series are also great favourites. st Another reason Robe is ideal for events like the Summer Night Concert is the overall reliability and robust e build quality which is essential for outdoor applications, and was a great reassurance to all involved in the technical this year which was accompanied by atrocious weather! Grobler’s lighting design included 60 x Robe ROBIN 600 LEDWashes and 24 x LEDBeam 100s. Sixteen of the LEDBeam 100s were used to light the reveal of two Range Rover Evoques. The 600s were dotted around the rest of the trussing, utilised for primary stage and set washes. Seventy-eight Robe LEDForce 18s RGBW PARs were rigged above the audience on additional trusses and used for washing across the vast area, while 38 x Robe ColorSpot 700E ATs positioned over the stage made sharp beam effects and gobo projections onto the floor and set. TechRig owns a large stock of Robe fixtures and has invested steadily in the brand over the last five years, and Grobler uses Robe as his workhorse fixtures. It was the first time he’d used the pre-set colour temperature whites on the LEDWash 600s, “They were excellent, giving me all the same effects as if using 2K blonds or fresnels minus the harshness”, he concluded. The event – an experiential to promote Clover’s Super M milk drink – was staged at Durban’s Wavehouse, with Hirezone’s Richard Gild as Project Manager. For the lighting rig, the company worked to the specification of Parlotones’ LD Travis Yeatman, and also provided the most appropriate fixtures for the venue, with which they are very familiar - it has a relatively low ceiling height. Lights were hung above the stage on a ground support system - optimised to gain every last millimetre of headroom - and also on the deck. EVENTS Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa based Technical Solutions Agency TechRig supplied nearly 200 Robe lighting fixtures to the 2012 annual DFC Conference & Gala Dinner for medical aid and insurance giants, Discovery. Staged at Sandton Convention Centre (SCC) in Johannesburg over two days, the event included two evenings of entertainment spectacular and awards presentations with lighting designed by TechRig’s Robert Grobler and a stylish set created by Michael Gill. Robe is Super Cool for The Parlotones The Robe elements included six ROBIN 600E Spots and six 600E Washes on the back bar, with another six ROBIN 600E Washes on the mid stage bar. On the floor were two 600E Spots, six ROBIN 600E Beams and six ROBIN LEDBeam 100s. The tiny but hugely bright LEDBeam 100 is an absolutely perfect fixture for this type of environment. The events featured numerous live performers and together raised nearly 2 million Euros for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Weinhardt’s lighting designs varied slightly in the different venues, but the essence was the same - being adaptable and ensuring that all the acts looked amazing! Robe fixtures in action included ROBIN LEDBeam 100s (Solution Media is a proud owner of 84 pieces), MMX Spots and ColorSpot Wash 2500E ATs. The specially invited guests were visual and show designers, event planners, brand managers and ambassadors, media managers of telecommunication and oil companies together with film and TV stars adding extra glamour and… the press! All the Robe products displayed attracted interest, however the powerful pocket-sized LEDBeam 100 stole the limelight! People were blown-away with its tiny size, incredible intensity, speed, power and light weight of just 4Kgs. The TPi Awards is the industry’s highest profile celebratory event, and this was the second consecutive year that Robe was the exclusive lighting supplier. EVENTS EVENTS The show’s visual design this year was created by Tim Fawkes from top UK rental company HSL, who supplied all the rigging and other technical infrastructure needed to rig the lights. The Robe fixtures – including several award winning products in their own right which was very topical for the evening - were all delivered directly by Robe UK to the TPi Awards for show producers Mondiale Publishing. The pressure was on for Tim to produce something amazing with the lighting – given that the Who’s Who of the industry was in attendance – and he had no shortage of creative options with this many Robe units at his disposal! His aim was to bring a contemporary rock ’n’ roll look to the space – where one of the challenges is low headroom – and make it a funky and fun environment to reflect the party atmosphere. The fabulous beamy looks he wanted were achieved with the use of 132 x LEDBeam 100s. Robe’s versatile multi-purpose CityFlex 48 flexible LED fixtures came into their own dotted around the room. Thirty-two Award Winning ROBIN MMX WashBeams were used over the stage and around the space for breakups and beam effects and another award winning Robe product, the ROBIN DLF LED Wash (PLASA Innovation Award), was used as the primary stage lighting tool. Tim found the internal barn doors very useful in shuttering off the light neatly when working with the onstage LED screens. The ROBIN LEDWash 600 which has collected several awards in addition to being one of the most popular LED wash luminaires worldwide – was used for the main layer of table lighting around the Ballroom. Several hundred Robe fixtures were in action on two of the highest profile stands for leading brands – BMW and VW - at the 2013 Geneva International Motor Show. The event was staged at the Palexpo Centre in Geneva. It is one of the ‘Top 5’ motor shows in the world and attracts over 700,000 visitors. Organised by global hair brand L’Oréal, it was staged in the Carrousel du Louvre venue and recognised the talents of some of the best international hair stylists. The competition inspired over 100 competitors from 20 countries, which were whittled down to the ten finalists appearing before the jury and the public in Paris. Twenty-four Robe ROBIN MMX Spots, 24x ColorWash 700E ATs and eight ColorSpot 700E ATs were used by Nicky in her lighting design, all supplied by rental company Impact Evènement based south of Paris. BMW Four hundred Robe LEDWash 600s lit the special showcase area on the BMW stand highlighting the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo. These were specified by Lighting Designer Peter Heilig and supplied by rental company Rockservice from Salzgitter, Germany. Peter and SfS Project GmbH were asked to produce a spectacular lighting design for the booth that made a connection with the car’s interior. The lighting helped emphasize the sense of space and the whole occasion. Nicky has been using Robe products for some years. It’s the third year she has lit the HCT Final show, and the third time she has used MMX Spots on it! She specifically likes the dual wheels, the gobo selection, colour mixing and the power and intensity of these fixtures, and they were used extensively to back light the action and texture the stage and the models during the show. The Robes were positioned on four overhead trusses and on the stage floor. François was working for Dream Sets, commissioned to deliver the technical elements of the event for producers, Blue Moon Corporate Communications. Dream Sets’ Robert, Sean Hoey and Eben Peltz were Technical Directors and worked closely with leading SA rental company Gearhouse South Africa, whose Durban facility supplied most of the equipment used on the show. EVENTS Seventy Six Robes were used – 24x Robe ROBIN LEDWash 600s, 24x LEDBeam 100s, 12x ColorSpot 2500E ATs and 16x ColorSpot 700E ATs. The design was a careful blend of theatrical and televisual elements. The LEDWash 600s were mainly used for powerful back lighting and for in-fill from the sides. The upstage units could be zoomed for a nice even spread across the stage area and set, and then zoomed right in for more “beamy” effects. Another reason for picking LEDWash 600 was “Their rich colours” François explains, adding that he also likes the range of soft pastels and the individual ring control for eye-candy effects! Nearly 400 visitors embraced the mediaeval town for the three days to enjoy a lively mix of presentations by industry professionals from all areas of lighting and visuals. Various fact-finding and sightseeing visits were an integral part of the Conference itinerary, allowing delegates to see some of the local commerce and business activities first hand. This included a tour of the city’s famous Baroque Theatre complete with original wooden and rope stage machinery, and other specially arranged visits encompassed pencil and cosmetics factories and a graphite mine. EVENTS EVENTS The visit programme also took in the Městské Theatre, where Lighting Designer Andy Webb from the UK was commissioned by Robe to produce a special 15 minute live performance with a cast of five, titled “An Enchanted Realm”, which he lit entirely with around 50 Robe fixtures – all of them LED. This was followed by a Q&A session. The main Showlight venue was in the former Winter Riding Hall of Český Krumlov’s famous castle, a 15 minute walk up from the town centre, with an amazing view from each and every street corner and vantage point. Monday evening’s gala dinner took place in a large marquee adjacent to the Riding Hall in the attractive Castle Gardens, fortuitously blessed with excellent weather! As a very special finale to a magical evening, guests walked out to witness the Castle Gardens illuminated by over 2,000 candles, and a specially arranged Baroque firework display set to Handel’s ‘Music for The Royal Fireworks’ overture. On the Tuesday, one of the presentations was by leading Israeli Lighting Designer Avi Yona Bueno (Bambi), who spoke about his seminal work in lighting three seasons of the Israeli Opera performing at the foot of Masada Mountain near the Dead Sea. Each delegate was presented with a coffee table book produced by Robe which told the story of the technical and creative challenges of this extraordinary piece of work. At the end of the Conference, a long queue of people wanted Bambi to sign the book. The event was a massive success and the feedback has been amazing! For many delegates, it was also their first visit to the Czech Republic. Robe’s CEO Josef Valchář comments, “Every other person I spoke to throughout Showlight was saying that they would return to Český Krumlov with their families and friends and also come back to the CZ! It has been a completely positive experience for everyone, and we are very happy and privileged to have been part of Showlight 2013 – it is a real forum for discussion and ideas in our industry, and we were so happy to be able to represent our country in this way”. Immediate feedback suggested that this was the best Showlight ever… and everybody enjoyed a great time in Český Krumlov. After successfully using the brand new Pointe on the MTV Upfront Presentation in New York, Kenny again specified the versatile and multi-functional Pointe. EVENTS The lighting equipment was supplied by VER, and all of the Robe equipment was located on the deck of the multi-layered stage set. The Pointes were used as the main lights in that position, all directly upstage centre. Twelve were on the main deck and twelve on another elevated deck about 10 feet above the main stage and performance area. The expedient and unobtrusive size of the Pointes meant they could be left onstage throughout the entire event for which they were a real show workhorse, featuring in almost every look, scene and performance. The show’s Lighting Director & Programmer Michael Appel explains that from wide-beamed ‘glamour’ looks to completely contrasting waves of tight panning beams, “We were able to get a wide variety of usage from these versatile fixtures… which would have been difficult with other lights of its class”. Robe’s Middle East office headed by ME Regional Sales Manager Elie Battah ensured that the new units were delivered to Lighthouse in super-quick time for this show. They were used as beams and washes as well as shuttered down tightly for specific scenes. They were also used for spotting and gobo work. “It’s the first time I have been able to achieve so much from one fixture,” Miranda declares. “They are hugely versatile and I’m delighted with them,” he enthused, adding “They are an absolute dream to work with – so multi-functional and so light in weight!” EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED BY LOCATION 64 EVENTS 28x ColorWash 575E AT™, 24x ROBIN® 300 Beam Classic™, 24x ColorMix 240 AT™, E AT™ 18x ColorSpot 575E AT™, 12x ROBIN® MMX WashBeam™, 12x ColorSpot 1200E AT™, 6x ColorSpot 2500E ROBE Middle East United Arab Emirates FC Union Berlin Robe MMX WashBeams Have Grandstand View Twenty thousand excited FC Union Berlin fans packed into their An der Alten Fösterei Stadium to watch a specially commissioned show to officially inaugurate their new grandstand. The 20 minute spectacle was creatively directed by Gerald Ponesky and Uwe “Leo” Auerswald for Berlin based event agency the Compact Team. Helinski wanted to integrate the entire field of play into the theatrical production, and his idea involved three trussing circles which could be rolled into the middle of the pitch rigged with all 60 MMX WashBeams, flame jets and various pyro effects. EVENTS Watan Al Ahlam He chose Robe’s MMX WashBeam as a powerful and dynamic lightsource that could produce multiple effects including projecting across the grass, onto the new stand and all the other buildings around the stadium. This ‘crown’ like lighting feature was the centrepiece of the high-impact show and absolutely vital to the T aesthetics and drama of the piece. He says, “The MMX WashBeam with its excellent photometric properties a and wide range of effects - including the fact that it works equally well as both a wash light and a beam a ssource – ticked all the boxes”. The bold stage and presentation aesthetics for 2013 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, took inspiration from the ultra-cool MTV Moon Man Award statue that received a special 30th anniversary makeover this year by New Jersey street-artist KAWS. Lighting Designer Tom Kenny worked the same style – blurring the lines between fine art and pop art - into multiple areas of the onstage lighting treatment, with 80 of Robe’s new Pointe multi-purpose moving light fixtures, a vital element of his rig of over 1000 moving heads. These were supplied to the event along with 32x Robe ROBIN LEDWash 600s and 20x LEDWash 1200s by rental specialist, VER. Robe’s powerful, super-bright Pointes were positioned left and right of the stage and behind the VIP stage / seating area. They were used - metaphorically - to “blow people away!” For those watching the lighting, they even gave Miley Cyrus’ much talked about “twerk-tastic” performance a run for its money! “I needed a big beam look and a wash light in the same position,” explained Kenny.“ The Pointe does it all, and is way brighter than anything else … so it’s a Win-Win situation,” enthused Kenny - who gets the Pointe! Having the Pointes on the lighting rig also enabled him to use their beams in a ‘structural’ role for certain looks, particularly for the big dance numbers. T E L E V I SI O N T E L E V I SI O N Kenny – always keen to road-test cutting-edge technology - likes the fact that they are a new and fresh luminaire on the market, “I love them - they have loads of extra features that no other lights have, they are fabulously bright… and really fast”. He also appreciates the zoom, the gobos and the prism effects. Along with the stellar line up of artists performing live at the VMAs this year and the star-studded winners list, the Pointe won its share of adulation as well… “It was the most talked about fixture of the show,” declares Kenny! The 2013 VMAs is the third major high-impact event on which Kenny has used Pointes. He was the first in the US to use them ‘live’, for the MTV Upfront presentation in the Beacon Theatre, New York in April. Showing great faith in the brand to embrace a new product at such a high profile event, he liked the Pointes so much that they were on his spec a few weeks later for the 2013 CMT Awards in Nashville, Tennessee. On the 2103 VMAs he once again worked with his regular Lighting Director and Programmer Michael Appel and Gaffer Mike Grimes. Florian Wieder was the event’s Production Designer, Tamlyn Wright was Art Director and the show was directed by the legendary Hamish Hamilton and produced by Jessie Ignatovitch, Jen Jones, Lee Lodge e and MTV Productions. The 2013 MTV VMAs scored the highest rating yet in MTV history for an Awards show, attracting an impressive 10.1 million viewers. Seven amateur choirs mentored by celebrity musicians competed for the top prize of half a million ZAR and the first series’ rounds were recorded at the new Soweto Theatre, Nr Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, with lighting designed by Peter Reick from Blond Productions. The rig included over 100 Robe moving lights - a combination of Blond's own hire stock and the Soweto Theatre’s in-house rig. The full Robe count totalled 12x MMX Spots, 48x LEDBeam 100s and 12 Scan 575 XTs supplied by Blond, which were joined by 12x ROBIN 600E Spots and 30x LEDWash 300s owned by the theatre, all programmed and controlled by Reick. The gently curved set design was based around 10 vertical columns and a scenic ‘horseshoe’ flown above, all made from white fabric stretched over metalwork superstructures, which Reick lit very effectively. The MMXs were positioned upstage at the back behind the horseshoe and used for gobo and beam effects, supported by the ROBIN 600E Spots which produced variations on these effects. The LEDBeam 100s internally lit the columns – their small size and high brightness ideal for the job! Over 100 Robe moving lights were spec’d for the sixth series of ‘Let’s Dance’ produced by ITV Germany and recorded in Studio 32 of the MMC Film & TV Studios in Cologne. The Production Lighting Designer was Manfred Ollie Olma, one of Germany’s best known LDs. Lighting was designed by Martin Kubanka, Slovakia’s top television LD, and included over 100 Robe fixtures - LEDWash 600s and 1200s, ROBIN MMX Spots, ROBIN 300 and 600 Beams and LEDBeam 100s. Kubanka worked closely with set designer Daniel Sichman on the show aesthetics which also featured a plethora of LED screens and lightsources. These and all the Robes were supplied by leading Slovakian technical solutions provider, Q-99. His company, mo2 design GmbH is also based in Cologne. Executive Lighting Designer & Director of Photography David Kreileman took care of the week-to-week running of the show’s lighting, working alongside mo2 Project Managers Sebastian Kirsch and Matthias Allhoff. They used 40 x Robe ColorSpot 2500E AT fixtures and 70 x ColorWash 2500E ATs. T E L E V I SI O N A big challenge in lighting Miss Universe was lighting the 12 contestants perfectly for the cameras – for which they needed fabulous skin tones, achieved using 10 carefully positioned LEDWash 1200s as 3200K soft lights in the central area of the stage. Robes were used for all the key lighting. Using moving lights for this task is a really fast and flexible solution that gives the director complete freedom to place the dancing couples anywhere in the space and for them to be quickly and properly key-lit. “Robe’s 2500 series is really powerful with a good light output and excellent gobo projections and that’s vital to the ambience we create,” states Kreileman. Being the very first time Olma had road-tested the Pointe, he did not know what to expect. He was so impressed that he asked for more! Six extra Pointes enabled him to integrate all 12 lights around the set, designed by Jürgen Schmidt-André. Olma then created eye-popping aerial effects and bright, piercing beam work which worked brilliantly on wide camera shots. The lighting rig featured multiple curved trusses at varying levels, and the concept was to create one fabulous lighting look which looked amazing and appeared different but complimentary from all camera angles. Overall he was very impressed. “This very small and compact lightsource is a massive step forward for lighting itself,” he stated. Compared to the 700 Spot and Wash fixtures being used in the studio (from another manufacturer) he confirmed, “They easily out-perform these with their 280W lamp”. It was the first time Tom had used Robe’s LEDBeam 100s on this scale for which they were absolutely fundamental to the aesthetics. They were positioned on two rows of audience-facing trusses flanking the stage wings and followed through, with another two rows running down both the sides of the stage. “The Pointe is a top class beam effect – the light cuts through everything around (like smoke and LED D screens, etc.) in a very clear and precise way”. He also likes the smooth dimming curve; the zoom ranges s and the “Sharp, crisp and clean” gobos. “The Pointe is an extremely versatile tool either as a spot with greatt projection capabilities or as a wash unit with stunning effects”, he enthused. Two more rows lined the two advanced trusses at front of the stage, all pointed out into the audience. Tom specifically used the LEDBeam 100s to accentuate and amplify the apparent size of the rig – a clever visual trickery ploy that worked brilliantly! He chose LEDBeams because he wanted a fixture with a strong and powerful beam but not one that was too dominant. “It was vital for the beams to look ‘fluffy’ rather than harsh,” he explained, “and they were perfect”. The MMXs were specified by the Theatre’s Technical Manager Enos Ramoroko, Production Manager Simon James and Senior Lighting Technician Patrick Mbatha, all of whom were “Hugely impressed” by what the lights had to offer. The Theatre already owned 18 Robe ColorWash 700E ATs which have been a big success with all the various productions so it was a logical decision to choose Robe again. They needed a fixture that offered optimum versatility for the price … and that would be ideal for their wide range of productions. Several key factors made them choose MMX explains Ramoroko. The principle ones were that the MMX Spot is “Bright, compact and has a host of very easy-to-programme effects and brings big energy savings”. The MMX Spots are installed in the Theatre’s 1063 capacity Mandela auditorium – the largest of four performance spaces – and Jack & The Beanstalk was the first show to use them. The classic pantomime’s lighting designer was UK based Graham McLusky, who has been lighting Joburg Theatre (formally known as The Civic) pantos for the last 10 years and panto in general in the UK for 35 years! Lighting Designer Luke Harnett knew exactly which Robe moving lights he needed to light a production of Bernstein’s comic operetta Candide at the Amey Theatre, Abingdon School, Oxfordshire, UK. He specified six Robe ROBIN DLX Spots and six LEDWash 300s, supplied by Tring based Universal Event Productions – who have a large stock of Robe fixtures. Harnett currently works full time at the theatre and has been using Robe products for around five years. He chose Robe’s latest products for this one for several key reasons. Firstly, the CMY colour mixing. The show visited multiple locations as the complex jittery-paced and fantastical 30 chapter narrative unfolded - each scene morphing into the next without blackouts! So they needed the superior smoothness and subtlety of this feature. Secondly, the zoom on both fixtures was a massive advantage. The different scenes featured anything from epic scale all-singing-all-dancing ‘production’ musical numbers with a full cast onstage to poignant solos. The 15 to 60 and 10 to 45 degree zooms of the LEDWash and DLX fixtures respectively gave numerous options. Another issue was the limited amount of hard power available onstage at the Amey Theatre, so the LED moving light solution brought serious latitude to the design. The DLX’s a output beats a 1200W series fixture drawing only 250W of power. o Finally, they chose Robe for the renowned reliability and because “Robe is a real driver of LED lighting F development in the entertainment industry”, concludes Harnett. d EQUIPMENT E S SUPPLIED BY L LOCATION 6x ROBIN ® DLX Spot™, 6x ROBIN ® 300 LEDWash™ Robe UK United Kingdom T H E AT RE 20x ROBIN ® MMX Spot™, 18x ColorWash 700E AT™ DWR South Africa Robe Takes Candide Approach T H E AT RE EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED BY LOCATION Bernstein’s operetta 80 THEATRE THEATRE 81 Cirkus Cirkör Cirkus Cirkör at Peace with Robe Scandinavia’s leading contemporary circus company Cirkus Cirkör from Stockholm, Sweden have purchased Robe MMX Spots and LEDWash moving lights for their current touring schedule, which presents their latest breath-taking work, “Knitting Peace”. Renowned for their original, intimate, exciting and thought-provoking work, Cirkus Cirkör was Sweden’s first circus group of the genre. Lighting is an absolutely integral element of Cirkus Cirkör’s work. It’s used to emphasise the drama, seatedge acrobatics and sheer physical power, emotion and aesthetics of the performance. Lighting for “Knitting Peace” is designed by Ulf Englund, and the new Robe fixtures – five MMX Spots and 16 LEDWash 600s – were specified for this show by him and Cirkus Cirkör’s Technical Producer, Stefan Karlström. “They are well specified lights and fitted our budget,” says Karlström. Using 21 Robes is a much faster, dynamic and far more practical solution then using hundreds of conventionals! The Robes are currently the only lights on the show and are rigged onto the custom trussing structure also used by the performers and for various props, with some units on the floor. This enables Cirkus Cirkör to be completely self-sufficient. Their crew can rock up at any venue or performance space and have their show area and technicals exactly the same each time – all they need is power! Owning the lights will also save substantially over hiring in kit for a show which might run for two to three years! Moving lights from Robe’s latest ROBIN MMX and DL Series ranges were utilised by Lighting Designer Michael Grundner for the world premiere of “Moses – The Ten Commandments”, a new musical extravaganza by Michael Kunze and Dieter Falk staged at the Theatre St. Gallen in Switzerland. Grundner’s lighting design aimed to mimic the ‘contemporary rock and pop with gospel elements’ style of the show for which the Theatre decided to purchase the new system of Robe moving lights. The package comprised eight MMX Spots, two DLS Profile, two DLX Spots and 16x DLF Wash fixtures, all specified by Head of Lighting, Andreas Enzler and his Deputy Andreas Volk on the recommendation of Grundner among others. They were delivered via Robe’s Swiss distributor, Audio Tech. They wanted a versatile, energy saving moving light rig containing high light output fixtures with excellent optics and fast movement. The rig also had to be cost efficient to run – and Robe’s DL and MMX ranges fitted the bill perfectly with their ‘smaller, lighter, brighter’ design concept. The DL range is fast becoming a popular choice for theatre productions with important and relevant features like full tungsten emulation, completely shadow free LED lightsources and silent running. Michael Grundner has been using and specifying Robe products in his work for some time, which includes musicals, corporate event designs and concerts worldwide for José Carreras – whom he has LD’d since 2011. EQUIPMENT Robe All Around The Globe Theatre in Rome The Globe Theatre in Rome is an exact replica of the famous Shakespeare’s Globe venue in London, and like its English counterpart, is equally high profile in the Italian capital, specializing in producing the works of Shakespeare. A major new investment has been made in Robe LED moving lights, which were specified by award winning Lighting Designer Umile Vainieri and delivered by Robe’s Italian distributor, Robe Multimedia. The new fixtures are eight ROBIN DLX Spots, 12x ROBIN LEDWash 600s and two DigitalSpot 7000DT moving projectors. Vainieri, a freelance LD working regularly at the Globe since 2005, also works on a host of other shows in Italy and internationally. He wanted the fixtures installed because he knew they would add “Real production value” to the venue’s acclaimed performances. He wanted moving lights onboard to speed up focusing, make it easier to re-set between performances as well as producing more complex and sophisticated lightshows. Having used Robe for some time, it’s a brand he knows and trusts. The new Robe installation at The Globe reduces the roof weight loading considerably – it’s now less than three-quarters of what it was previously! c Other advantages are fewer dimmers, less cabling and of course less power consumption and no lamp O rreplacements needed for the LED fixtures! His brief was to bring a completely unique look - but with a similar signature style and flair - to the independently owned venue following his highly successful lighting at the Penthouse Club in Reno in 2011. Working closely with Penthouse SF owner Joe Carouba, local architect Gary Henderson of Collins-Henderson Inc. and installer Karl Keislich from Sound Stage Systems, David also completely re-designed the interior space, formally the Broadway Showgirls Club, bringing it in line with the slick modern marque of the Penthouse global brand. The Club covers around 15,000 square feet split over two levels, and is divided into several different areas including the main room and ‘ultra lounge’, main bar, hallway, a series of dining booths, two stages, a second floor bar, VIP Rooms, Dance Stations, Skybox, elevators, the bathrooms and entrance / lobby. No area is unlit! The lighting experience starts outside the building with Anolis ArcPad 48 wash fixtures shooting up the walls and the doorway delineated with Anolis ArcSource 1 cool whites, immediately identifying it from its surroundings. A full range of Anolis fixtures is utilised throughout the club – ArcSource, ArcLine, ArcLink, ArcPAR and ArcPad. Anolis was selected for its wide and dynamic range of fixtures, their high quality European-manufactured specs, and also because of the ability to customise certain fixtures according to the precise needs of the design. Special features include a very smart Champagne Display. The feature itself is highlighted and the huge opening in the celling above is also revealed enabling people to see how to access the second level – for which a large section of existing wall was removed. Proper architectural lighting brings the impressive display ‘alive’ using eight Anolis ArcLine Optic 24 smart whites with 25x 6 degree lenses. The Robe fixtures were specified by TFC’s Technical Director Obed Castillo and supplied by Phil Rapp of Gear Systems Design from Edmond, Oklahoma, who partnered with TFC to supply and install the full technical production package. The new larger sanctuary was the result of a much needed expansion to the existing premises to accommodate popular and well-attended worship services. The stage systems for the new auditorium were designed for concerts and broadcasts in addition to the five weekly services. Currently TFC has a web-based ministry, but future plans include going to a multi-site format, so good broadcast lighting was vital to the final technical plans. Gear Systems specified four ROBIN 600 LEDWashes, eight ROBIN 300 LEDWashes, four ROBIN 300E Spots, eight ColorSpot 250E ATs and ten LEDForce 18s plus a Robe Faze 1050FT hazer. Most of the lights are installed on trussing above and around the stage, with some on the stage floor. Any light can be moved to any position for full adaptability. The auditorium has limited available power, so fixtures with low power consumption were important and d practical on-going operational costs were another consideration. McAllen’s location on the southern tip p of Texas in the Rio Grande Valley means that high temperatures are also a factor, so fixtures outputting less s heat will also help with the utility bills! EQUIPMENT Lighting Designer Örjan Fjällström used Robe LEDWash 1200s to light a special broadcast for Swedish Television to celebrate the first birthday of HRH Princess Estelle, daughter of HRH Crown Princess Victoria and second in line to the throne. The Sunday morning service took place in the Royal Chapel, Stockholm, a beautiful Rococo period church located in the Royal Palace, which was key lit by Fjällström using six Robe ROBIN 1200 LEDWashes. These proved an ideal solution to the many practical challenges he faced in lighting the event. The Royal Chapel is a heritage site so the only equally awkward options for lighting positions were on floor stands – and even these are limited - or a series of window recesses down one side to the Chapel. Power is also limited. And Fjällström really needed to use a 5K source equivalent to match the 4.200°K colour temperature of his 2K fresnels gelled with half CTB that were dotted around the building. Enter the Robe LEDWash 1200! During tests he soon realised its smooth colour mixing, fabulous range of proper whites and excellent zoom capabilities was the answer. The units were located in the window recesses opposite the pews where the Royal Family sat for the service - making perfect key lighting. Robe fixtures were chosen for their small size and light weight and because they wanted truly multi-functional al luminaires. The requirement was to keep the technical installation as unobtrusive and concealed as possible e so as to fuse with the surroundings. The project to light the event was instigated by Eddy Puerta from KJM and the Robe fixtures used were a combination of those from the in-house system plus 24 additional units hired in from James Watson at Arts of South Florida. The house rig – installed in 2006 by Paradigm Lighting from Tamarac when the building was completed – features six Robe ColorSpot 575E ATs, 24 x Robe ColorWash 575E ATs and 12 Robe ColorMix 575s. The Supernatural Revolution event was shot in HD and broadcast globally by KJM so it needed to look great on camera as well as live complete with plenty of dramatic theatrical style lighting – so additional Robes were specified for the show. During the process, he consulted with Andres Sarv, Vanemuine’s current Head of Lighting and Margus Vaigur, Head of Lighting at Teater Endla in Parnu, another of the state supported venues. The requirement for the new equipment to be eco-friendly was right at the core of the document that went out to tender. This was won by E&T, who proposed a package based on Robe’s latest technologies for the moving light elements. Over 500 Robes in total were delivered across all eight venues. Vanemuine’s Big House now has over 100 new Robe moving lights in its 660 capacity auditorium, including 56x LEDWash 1200s, 20x MMX Spots, 10x ROBIN 600E Spots, 24x ROBIN 600E Washes, 24x CitySkape Xtremes – six of which are used to illuminate the front façade of the building – and two DigitalSpot 7000DTs. In the first month of the installation being active, they saved 88% of electricity consumed for stage lighting… impressive by any standards! Having such a dynamic choice of fixtures available means the Big House can offer all visiting LDs a huge choice of tools to light any performance with style and panache. For their own LDs, it greatly expands the creative scope of the work they can produce … and accelerates the time needed to achieve good results. The Harbour Teater now has 30 new Robe moving lights including eight DLX LED Spots, 12 LEDWash 600s, eight LEDWash 300s and two CitySkape Xtremes. The Small House, a beautiful 300 capacity Art Nouveau style building has 40 new Robes including ROBIN 600E and 300E Spots and Washes and LEDWash 600s and 300s. The overall project is also the biggest single sale to date in Robe’s history. They were specified by Technical Manager Jason Rooney and join 16 existing Robe ColorSpot 250E ATs, which joined the rig in an upgrade of the whole lighting system earlier in the year. The GH Hotel likes to offer the best quality technology and production values for all its shows. It’s open five nights with a lively schedule of entertainment. Once Jason and his technical team saw the DLXs in action - demonstrated by Robe’s Australian distributor The ULA Group - they knew these were the right moving lights for the venue! “We wanted a TV friendly moving light around the stage that had real power and punch for the reds, blues and deeper saturates – the DLX is a huge step forward and the output is incredible,” he states. Jason handles lighting design and production for all GH’s events and operates many of the shows himself. He loves the smooth iris and speed of the DLX’s versatile 10 – 45 degree zoom, and uses both these featuress extensively in his shows, together with most of the others and also likes the super-sharp gobos. The DLXss are positioned all around the main stage area on ladders above the upstage LED screen and on the FOH H gantry for full coverage all around the room. Legendary Brussels live music venue the Ancienne Belgique – commonly known as the AB – has 20 new Robe ROBIN MMX Spot moving lights that have replaced the previous spot fixtures in a major lighting system upgrade. The AB’s 2000 capacity Main Room is one of the most prominent live music and performance venues in Europe, featuring a plethora of profile artists. The venue stages over 300 live events a year featuring around 500 bands which are enjoyed by over 300,000 people! Around 90% of the artists visiting the AB use the in-house lighting system, and approximately 75% of these will bring their own LDs, so it is vital that they stay at the forefront of the latest technologies. The decision to invest in Robe moving lights was a collective one made by all four members of the AB’s in-house lighting technical team led by Kris Noerens. They reported their recommendations to the AB’s Technical Director Marc Vrebos, who co-ordinated the deal. All the options were very carefully considered T and several shoot-out comparisons took place before they committed, but all agreed on key features like a the speed and smooth colour mixing of the MMX Spots. th Other stand-out MMX features were its dual animation wheel, “The unit is great for specials and for creating O sspecial FX,” comments Kris Noerens and Cedriek Stoffels (the AB’s incoming Head of Lighting), who also lilike the speed and range of the iris movement. The magnificent Gothic Cathedral of St Elizabeth in Košice, Slovak Republic, became the glowing centrepiece of the city’s Opening Ceremony celebrations for its year as European Capital of Culture in a spectacular Robe and Anolis LED lighting scheme. Patronaat has two Concert Halls - at 950 and 350 capacity - both featuring an action-packed programme of the latest sounds and contemporary music. The stage lighting is optimised to provide excellent environments for bands and DJ / dance performances alike. In addition to 300 plus live shows a year, the venue is frequently hired out by TV production companies and corporate organisations. The overall OC event lasted two days with over 1000 artists performing in 70 different locations in and around the city. The Cathedral – the largest in Slovakia - was lit for the entire time in a design by Petr Kolmačka, providing a jaw-dropping backdrop for the finale of the OC. The lighting re-fit trebled the amount of moving lights in the house, with 36x Robe ROBIN MMX Spots, 18x ROBIN LEDWash 600s and 24x ROBIN LEDBeam 100s split between the two rooms. Van der Plas assessed the various options when deciding on the new fixtures. He has also worked as a freelance LD and been impressed with the quality and reliability of Robe. He likes the colours on all the Robe fixtures and dual graphics wheel of the MMXs together with the incredible speed of the very compact LEDBeam 100s, which remind him of the original moving mirror fixtures which everyone loved for being so fast and reactive! He sought the opinions of Patronaat’s team of eight regular freelance LDs, programmers and operators who liked features like the MMX’s zoom function and the hot spot control.
