PETER’S BASILICA ELITE TOUR (Approx. 3 hrs) ** Free Sale ** - Owned and Operated by GARTOUR With our Vatican Elite Tour, you will join a small group walking tour of the Vatican Museums and St Peter's Basilica, and skip the line by booking ahead! With 2000 rooms filled with the most extensive collection of art in the world you will be lead by an expert guide along the history of this outstanding Museum. You will marvel at the sight of the Sistine Chapel, one of the most famous and visited sites in the world. Ordered in the late 15th century by Pope Sixtus IV (hence the name “Sistine” Chapel), it is the most emblematic example of papal patronage during the Renaissance period. Thanks to the genius of Michelangelo, you will have an unforgettable experience. This great artist created the masterpiece painting on the ceiling, The Creation of Adam, as well as the incomparable Last Judgment, on the altar wall. But the Vatican Museums are not just the Sistine Chapel... along the tour our guide will show you more art jewels such as the Pio-Clementino halls with the Laocoon and Apollo Belvedere, the Candelabra, Tapestries and Maps Galleries. We will then leave the Vatican Museum and proceed to the imposing beauty of Saint Peter’s Basilica. Its dome was designed by Michelangelo who also designed the plan of the Renaissance church. Inside this church we will experience the beauty of the world famous sculpture La Pietà (another Michelangelo masterpiece and the only sculpture personally signed by the artist). And in the meantime, we will discover the originality of another art genius, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Thanks to him you can admire the extremely impressive Baldachin Altar (in gold and bronze), and the splendid Colonnade in St. Peter’s Square. In booking this tour, you will find it to be the highlight of your holiday. Join us for this unique art experience within such rich architectural history. With this 3 hour walking tour you will see the most famous sites of the city . In a single morning you will move in centuries and discover top attractions of Rome. This itinerary begins at Campo dei Fiori, certainly one of the most characteristic squares in Rome with its “open-air” market and the statue of Giordano Bruno in the centre. Next to Campo de’ Fiori we will admire the magical charm of Piazza Farnese, which takes its name from the imposing Palazzo Farnese. A few steps from Palazzo Farnese stands Palazzo Spada. The building is worth a stop thanks to the brilliance of forced prospective introduced by the famous architect Borromini. Proceed then to Piazza Navona, one of the most famous squares in the world. Its original shape repeats with extreme faithfulness the perimeter of the ancient stadium of Domitian built in 89 A.D. . The symbol of the square is the “Fountains of Four Rivers”, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and competing with Borromini’s famed church S.Agnese in Agone. In a ten minute walk we reach Piazza della Rotonda housing the unmistakable structure of the Pantheon (inside visit). The Pantheon, a building of ancient Rome, has been well preserved and is a true masterpiece of architecture. Once inside, our expert guide will be glad to give a short explanation about the history and the architectural secrets of the building. In the centre of the square there is a fountain with a mist linear plan designed by Giacomo della Porta. From Piazza della Rotonda the distance is short to Piazza Colonna, thus named after the 2nd century marble column celebrating the victories of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius over the Germanic populations. The square is the centre of the Italian political life, which gravitates around Palazzo Chigi, the seat of the Prime Minister. We then cross Via del Corso and we reach the Trevi Fountain (**), a true masterpiece and certainly the most famous and spectacular fountain in Rome. The last stop of our itinerary will be Piazza di Spagna, (Spanish Steps). So original in shape, it has always been the meeting place for travellers coming from all over the world. In the centre of the square you will admire the Fontana della Barcaccia made by Pietro Bernini (father of the more famous Gian Lorenzo). This area is surely a paradise for the fashion conscious shopper and you will find the most important and famous names of the Italian style. After the tour you can keep walking on your own along the nice shopping area of Via Condotti, or you can just have fun and relax in the numerous shops and cafes in the area. ** The Trevi Fountain is undergoing renovation works and will be enclosed by a wire mesh and panels. If the Roman Forum and Pompeii were on your ‘sights to see list’ -- come see what experts are calling “The Better Pompeii”, just a step away from the Eternal city by local train. The beautifully preserved ruins of ‘Ostia Antica’ or Ancient Ostia were founded in the 4th century BC and once inhabited by over 100,000 people. Ancient Ostia is commonly referred to as “The Better Pompeii” due to the astonishing highly preserved condition of its buildings. Structures included taverns, baths, apartments, groceries and theatres – and their intact state so strikingly exceeds that of the Roman Forum, Imperial Forum and Pompeii, that it seems a misnomer to call them ‘ruins’. Here it’s easy to let your imagination fly and feel like you’ve been transported back in time -- in this once bustling Roman harbor town the ruins are so isolated that no modern houses, roads and telephone wires are visible. Walk the main street, the Decumanus Maximus, while your tour guide brings the stones around you to life. The Roman statues that line the walkways are in such perfect condition you’ll feel as though you are walking amongst the ancient Romans themselves! You’ll even be enticed to take a dip in the Baths of Neptune, which are crowned by a impressively intact mosaic of the sea god being drawn by a four horse chariot. And if you are a theatre fan, you shouldn’t miss Ancient Ostia’s amphitheatre – whose structure is still so stable that you will be able to take your place in the stands as 3,500 ancient Roman spectators once did back in 12BC when it was first constructed. Among Ostica Antica’s many stunning sites that we’ll visit there is also the communal forica – or toilettes. Each apartment building has at least one for use by the tenants – and there is one particularly striking example – where a marble bench lined with twenty well-spaced holes lines four walls of a large, open room. Have a seat on one of the holes – and suddenly the more daily and human aspects of ancient Roman life become strikingly apparent. Don’t miss the chance to experience the “Better Pompeii” with us. ** Sneakers and socks are recommended. At the end of the tour clients will have the option to remain at Ancient Ostia, explore the city of Ostia or even explore the nearby beach. The tour includes the train ticket back to Rome and clients can choose to return with the guide at the conclusion of the tour or head back on their own ** ** HIGH SEASON ONLY (01 April – 31 October 2015) ** Tour starts at 08.40 a.m. at “Cafè Piramide” (close to Piramide Metro Station – Line B / Blue Line) Every Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays (Except 01 May 2015) ** In April and May tour runs only on Wednesdays and Sundays, not on Fridays ** - Rates per person GROSS RATE Adult € 47,00 Chd 4 – 14 yrs € 42,00 IMPORTANT: The actual tour duration is about 2.5 hours inside Ancient Ostia Ruins not including the train trip to and from Ancient Ostia. The itinerary starts with a visit of the Roman Catholic titular church and the minor basilica of Saint Peter in Chains, best known for being the home of the world famous Statue of Moses by Michelangelo. Crossing the Imperial Avenue we will see the Trajan Column, a Roman triumphal column which commemorates Roman emperor Trajan’s victory in the Dacian wars. We continue to Piazza Venezia with the imposing “Vittoriano”, a monument built to honour Victor Emanuel, the first king of a united Italy. After this stop we will walk up to arrive in Piazza del Campidoglio, another very famous sign of the Eternal City. Situated on Capitol Hill, it has always been the privileged seat of divinity and power. Providing the perfect overview of the Roman Forum, the whole square is a tribute to the art and architecture of Michelangelo. He designed the lovely star-shaped pavement pattern, the façade of the Palazzo Senatorio and the other two palaces embracing the square. We will then walk down Via del Campidoglio to Via San Teodoro to have a view of the Roman Forum as well as the whole complex of the Forum & Coliseum. A stop here for an unforgettable picture is a real must. The itinerary is close to the end, but there's still time for few more interesting points of Rome. One of these is the beautiful Arch of Janus and then the Church of San Giorgio al Velabro where, according to tradition, the basket with the twins Romulus and Remus was found. We then arrive at the church of S. Maria in Cosmedin, famous throughout the world for its portico housing the well known Bocca della Verità. It is a large stone disk depicting the face of a faun or river god with its mouth open. According to the legend the stone was used to judge people’s honesty. Just in front of this church we are in the zone of the Forum Boario, the site in ancient times of the cattle and beef market. The walking tour ends here. Afterwards you can continue the visit on your own to Circus Maximum and the Aventino Hill, or you can just cross the Tiber River to have a fun and relaxing walk in the Trastevere district. ** During winter period (low season) the itinerary will run in reverse, from the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin to the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli ** ** LOW SEASON (01 November 2014 – 31 March 2015) ** Tour starts at 02.00 p.m. in Piazza della Bocca della Verità (in front of the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin – where the “Bocca della Verità” - Money of the Truth – stands) Every Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays ** HIGH SEASON (01 April – 31 October 2015) ** Tour starts at 03.00 p.m. in Piazza San Pietro in Vincoli (in front of the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli) Every Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays - Rates per person GROSS RATE Adult € 35,00 Chd 4-12 yrs € 28,00 ** Above prices are applied with presentation at meeting point 15 minutes prior departure. After the classic and tourist itineraries, take a break from the crowds, escape the traffic, and explore the backstreets of the historic center that most tourists do not even know exists. The whole walking tour runs close to the River Tiber that has always been a characteristic of the Roman landscape. During the itinerary you will literally cross between centuries and you will discover treasures from the Middle Ages and Renaissance as well. The itinerary starts with the characteristic area of Jewish Ghetto. Founded in 1555, it is one of the ancient Ghettos throughout Italy and Europe. In ancient times it was completely surrounded by a wall and housed approx. 9.000 inhabitants. The main sign of the ghetto is without a doubt the monumental building of the Synagogue built in 1904. Behind the Synagogue runs Via del Portico d’Ottavia which owes its name to the ruins of the ancient portico built on1st century B.C. Inside part of the monument stands the church of St. Angelo in Pescheria, so called in reference to the important fish market held here from the Middle Ages up to the end of 19th century. After the visit to the Jewish Ghetto, we will walk on the Ponte Fabricio and we arrive shortly at Tiberina Island. We will have a fun walk along this very characteristic island which is mainly occupied by the hospital Fatebenefratelli from the 16th century. But the island itself offers an amazing walk even without specific monuments. The typical houses, courtyards and streets are reminiscent of its medieval origin and will surely enchant you. After this interesting stop we will proceed into one of the most famous and ancient parts of Rome, Trastevere. This area needs no introduction, it is famous for its restaurants and pubs and for the magic atmosphere, especially in the evening. The Medieval origin is undoubtedly evident everywhere but few people know that it is so rich in art, so a perfect mix awaits you for the last part of itinerary. We will officially “enter” Trastevere through Piazza in Piscinula and Via Arco dei Tolomei, which takes its name from the medieval arch which can still be seen. Walking in Vicolo dell’Atleta we can see a pretty 13th century construction, with a loggia and small pointed arches on stone corbel sand with an inscription in Hebrew on the central column. It is considered the only surviving ancient Jewish synagogue in the quarter from the Middle Age. Going back to Via dei Genovesi we arrive in Piazza Sonnino, which has one of the most well known medieval constructions, the Torre degli Anguillara, better known as the “House of Dante”. For a perfect end of this itinerary we will walk down Via della Lungaretta where we'll arrive at the square where we find the Basilica of St. Maria in Trastevere, one of Rome’s medieval gems. We will go inside the church and admire its apse containing the famous mosaics with the Coronation of the Virgin and the Stories of the Virgin. The walking tour ends here, in the very centre of Trastevere. After the tour you can continue a fun and relaxing walk in the district and then stop at any of the many restaurants or pizzerias to have a typical meal. ** Entrance into churches requires a strict dress code. Vesuvius where you can hike to the crater with a fantastic view of the bay of Naples below. Discover Pompeii and the still active Volcano that brought the bustling Roman city to its terrible end in this exclusive day trip from Rome to Pompeii & Vesuvius. After a comfortable transfer from Rome on an air-conditioned coach, we begin our day high above the city and bay of Naples – on the ridge of the crater of the famous Mount Vesuvius. Infamous for the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79AD, Vesuvius has erupted many times since – and is today regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the 3,000,000 people living in its immediate vicinity and the volcano’s tendency towards explosive eruptions. Lava flows have scarred the sides of the volcano, and are visible on the winding road up to the top. From the parking area, it is a 20 minute upward hike to the crater through soft volcanic ash and pumice – and the view from the top is well worth the while. After our adventurous morning we’ll take a leisurely lunch break, where you can experience the world-famous pizza Naples is known for. When you are ready to go – it’s on to the highlight of the day: Pompeii. Sitting in the ominous shadow of Vesuvius, the now ruined city of Pompeii was a sprawling metropolis of shops and residences, restaurants, gyms and brothels. Walk Pompeii’s main streets just as the ancient Romans did – the stones are still worn with tracks from the drawn carriages that tread them nearly 2000 years ago. We’ll visit the forum, the center of Pompeii’s political and social life, as well as view the startling plaster death casts of the victims of the catastrophic eruption that destroyed the city – freezing forever in time their last second of life. Join us on this comprehensive and fascinating tour of Pompeii & the powerful Volcano that destroyed it and discover why this UNESCO World Heritage Site continues to shock and fascinate the 2.6 million people who venture here each year. ** Minimum 2 Pax ** ** The hike up to the crater of Vesuvius is optional and requires a good level of general fitness to complete. The hike is uphill at a 14 degree angle and 20 minutes long, comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended. Due to inclement weather sometimes the crater may be closed, in this case we will offer an extended tour inside Pompei which will recover any time we would have spent on Vesuvius ** ** HIGH SEASON ONLY (01 April - 31 October 2015) ** Tour starts at 07.30 a.m. in the centre of “Piazza del Popolo” (at the fountain with the lions and obelisk) Every Day - Rates per person GROSS RATE Adult € 134,00 Chd 4 – 14 yrs € 124,00 IMPORTANT: Headsets, entrance fees to Pompeii and Vesuvius and “Pizza” in Pompei included in tour price. Clients have to reach meeting point 15 minutes prior departure ** Prestige Tour BEST OF TUSCANY IN ONE DAY FROM ROME – INCLUDING BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO WINE TASTING (13 hrs) * English Only * Take a break from the chaos of Rome with a Tuscan holiday. Our tour will focus on the famous Val D’Orcia region, visiting the historic hill towns of Montepulciano, Pienza and the vineyards of Montalcino. We will explore winding streets, catch beautiful views of rolling hills from city walls, hear centuries-old Gregorian chants, stop at a typical Tuscan farm for lunch and have plenty of time left over for sampling world-famous foods and wine – all locally produced. If you have a taste for Tuscany but just a short time in Italy, this tour is for you! A comfortable air-conditioned bus collects us in Rome and by mid-morning we’re in the ancient Etruscan town of Montepulciano. We’ll tour the town’s most important sights from the exposed brick Duomo and the main square to Punch’s Tower. We’ll see ancient Etruscan wells and venture deep into medieval wine cellars still used today. We’ll have a bit of free time for photo ops before we’re back on the bus to our next stop, the vineyards of Montalcino! Our arrival in the area of Montalcino is perfectly timed to leave us at Sant’Antimo Abbey where stone walls ring with the sound of Gregorian chants, performed here in the same way as they have been for centuries. Lose yourself in ancient rituals after taking some time to enjoy the view over some of Tuscany’s most beautiful vineyards. This is where Italy’s best wine, Brunello di Montalcino, is produced and we’ll have a chance to enjoy an exemplary bottle on the next leg of our journey and a sure highlight – lunch. The bus will take us out of town to a typical Tuscan farm where we will be wined and dined with the finest local produce. Devour three courses of regional dishes that surprise and delight, washed down with local wines. Lunch is followed by a professional guided wine tasting of the wines produced on site. Back on the bus your guide will prepare you for our next stop – Pienza. You will hear how this World Heritage site was conceived by Pope Pius II as a “utopian village” and get information on sites you may want to visit, such as the two Renaissance palaces and the beautiful Duomo. Pienza is a small town so we’ll split up here and take some time to wander alone, enjoying the serenity that is still true to the Pope’s vision today. Marvel at the ancient architecture, take in views of the rolling countryside beyond or get hopelessly, wonderfully lost in the town’s winding streets. You’ll be given a map so you’ll always be able to find yourself again. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to make time to sample Pienza’s most important product – pecorino cheese. With full bellies and bags packed with wine, cheese and pici pasta, we’ll meet back at the bus for a comfortable and scenic drive back to Rome. Take a welldeserved nap, watch the country fly past or spend the time planning your next visit to Tuscany – because one visit is never enough! ** HIGH SEASON ONLY (01 April 1 April - 31 October 2015) ** Tour starts at 07.30 a.m. in the centre of “Piazza del Popolo” (at the fountain with the lions and obelisk) Every Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays - Rates per person GROSS RATE Adult € 129,00 Chd 4 – 14 yrs € 119,00 IMPORTANT: Guided tour in Montepulciano, Gourmet Lunch and Wine Tasting in authentic Tuscan farm, tour assistant and headsets where necessary included in tour price.
