Where the Road Runs Out
Show Time: 11:15 AM
Run Time: 91 minutes
George Mensah (Isaach de Bankolé, Casino
Royale) is stuck in a rut. A respected scientist
and lecturer living in Rotterdam, he has grown
weary of the world of academia. But the sudden
death of an old friend, who has been running
a field research station in Equatorial Guinea,
gives George the incentive he needs to turn his
back on the academic world and return to his
African roots.
Arriving in Equatorial Guinea, where he
finds the field station in a state of disrepair,
George meets a local boy, Jimi, whose sunny
disposition opens George’s jaded eyes to the
possibilities of life in this rich and colorful
place. Through Jimi, George is introduced
to Corina (Juliet Landau, Buffy the Vampire
Slayer), who runs the orphanage which the little
boy calls home, and a tentative but heartfelt
romance begins.
With the unexpected arrival of George’s old
friend Martin (Stelio Savante, Ugly Betty),
however, George discovers that there are many
obstacles on the road to redemption and many
more where the road runs out...

Reaching Every Student:
Strategies to Develop Cultural
Responsiveness

a 4-factor model of cultural intelligence (CQ)
to individual, classroom and school cultural
responsiveness. Cultural intelligence, defined

the development of cultural responsiveness
necessary to address the diverse educational
landscape. It encompasses cognitive,
emotional and social intelligences and is both
valid for decision-making and culture free. Cultural intelligence can be developed. The
workshop will demonstrate how to incorporate
developmental strategies to the development of
culturally responsive instruction and classroom
environments as well as overall school
culture. Participants will leave the workshop
with strategies that can be applied toward the
development of both individual and school level
cultural responsiveness.

Congressman Andre Carson’s Office:
Congressional Art Competition Honorees
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors
a nationwide high school visual art competition
to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the
each congressional district. Students submit
entries to their representative’s office, and panels
of local artists in each district select the winning
entries, which are then displayed for one year at
the Capitol.
This year, IBE will showcase the Honorable
Mentions from Indiana’s District #7
Congressional Art Competition. The students’
work from Congressman Andre Carson’s office
will be on display during IBE’s Cultural Arts
exhibition. A special recognition ceremony will
be held for the students at the opening reception,
Thursday July 16th.

Harrison Center: Summer Academe Art
The Harrison Center for the Arts is a powerful
force for cultural development in Indianapolis
and a model for community arts, education, and
urban revitalization programs across America.
The student exhibit highlights emerging artists
in the Indianapolis community. The exhibited
works are from Summer Academe participants.
Summer Academe is a partnership with Herron
High School that combines Herron High School’s
classical focus with the Harrison Centers vision
for the arts. The exhibit is curated by Harrison
Center for the Arts studio artist and former Herron
high school art teacher Quincy Owens with
assistance from Summer Academe students.
Featured Artist: Works by Mimsy
This exhibit is a collection of works by Amiah
Mims. Amiah, a senior at Kent State University
and an IBE summer intern, created these pieces
using paints and charcoal along with a variety of
recyclable materials. Amiah expressed that her
ultimate goal for each work was to set a mood
and to tell a story. Some works include multiple
pieces to achieve that goal, while others can stand
alone. Please visit the Art Speaks CAFÉ on Friday
5:00 PM until 6:00 PM and on Sunday from 1:00
PM until 2:30 PM to create with Amiah on your
piece that will move others.
Eiteljorg Museum: What Does Freedom
Mean to You?
People throw around terms like “freedom”
without ever stopping to think what they mean.
People are willing to die for freedom without
ever understanding, or even thinking about,
what it actually is. The Eiteljorg will facilitate
this exhibit which allows the audience to have
a hands-on creative, art experience through the
creation of a post-it note mural displaying one’s
personal definition of “freedom”.
Fort Wayne Museum: African American
Artists at Fort Wayne Museum
African American visual artists have long
been under recognized for their talent and
not substantially included in galleries and art
museums. By the mid- 20th century, only a
handful of African American artists had made
been successful in the mainstream art world and,
not until the close of the century, did art dealers,
critics, collectors, and museum curators begin to
pay serious attention the growing sea of work by
African American artists.
The Fort Wayne Museum of Art has collected
works by African American artists since the
opening of its first professional facility in 1984.
Although we have a limited acquisition budget,
we have steadily added work by African American
artists to our Collection, including Jacob
Lawrence, Horace Pippin, Romare Bearden, Kara
Walker, Elizabeth Catlett, Sam Gilliam, Renee

any challenge. Be sure to have your children

IBE celebrates its first 45 years by presenting
“Celebrating the Past, Looking Toward the
Future - “A New Tradition” a historical exhibit
spanning four decades of the organization’s
immeasurable achievements as one of the most
successful and recognized black expositions
in the nation. The exhibit highlights the people
behind the organization, the year round programs
and events. A video documentary features historic
interviews of early members and visitors from
several Hoosier cities reveal IBE’s invaluable
heritage and contributions to the State of Indiana.
Indiana Historical Society: Hoosier
Cartoons, Comics, and Their Creators
From the stinging commentary of political
cartoons by editorial artists like Gary Varvel, to
humorous and Hoosier-centric characters such as
Abe Martin, Indiana’s contributions to the history
of cartoons and comics have been as varied as
their creators and the characters they produce.
Whether criticizing politicians or society’s ills,
dissecting complicated issues such as racism
and discrimination, entertaining children and
adults alike, or providing philosophical guidance,
cartoons and comics serve unique roles for their
intended audiences and often reflect the context
within which they are written. This traveling
exhibition developed by the Indiana Historical
Society celebrates the many ways that graphic
arts have expressed Hoosier opinions throughout
our state’s history.

Lawrence County Museum of History:
Hidden History: The History of Lawrence
County’s African American and MixedRace Pioneers
African Americans have been a part of Indiana
history since earliest times. In the pioneer
period they were few in numbers, but after the
Civil War the Black population of the state grew
steadily as the result of migration from the South.
Following Indiana’s admission into the Union in
1816, significant numbers of free Blacks began
migrating to the Hoosier state. Throughout the
period from 1820 to 1860 African Americans
accounted for approximately one percent of the
state’s population. More than 10,000 resided
in Indiana at the outbreak of the Civil War. This
exhibit is a poster display of the untold stories
from people of color who settled in Lawrence
County Indiana form 1818 – 1914.
Selma to Montgomery: Marching Along
the Voting Rights Trail Traveling Exhibit
Marching Along the Voting Rights Trail, organized
by National Exhibitions & Archives, LLC of
Glens Falls, New York, documents this quest for
equality and social justice through 45 powerful,
historic black and white and color photographs
taken by photojournalist Stephen Somerstein.
Relive the experience through stunning and
historic photographs, documenting the Selma
to Montgomery Civil Rights March in March
1965. Somerstein captured author James
Baldwin smiling, singer Joan Baez in front of
the Alabama State Capitol with a phalanx of
troopers on the steps behind her, and King
surrounded by microphones. The exhibit ends it
cross country tour in Indianapolis during IBE’s
Summer Celebration July 17-19th. In addition to
viewing the exhibit attendees can bid on any of
the pieces that will be auctioned during Summer
Celebration in person and online. Proceeds
of the auction benefit IBE’s Scholarship fund.
Silent Auction begins July 8th and ends July
19th at 4:00 PM.
