Do Stars matter? YES and NO.
I am excited about getting more stars and pushing myself! I want to know I am
stepping out of the box and giving it all I have. It's a personal push. I expect things
from myself. I am competitive against myself.

With that said I don't pay attention to others as far as how many stars they have
nor do I compare stars like I am better than someone.
When it comes down to it I guess the stars are not nearly as big of a deal as I feel
by being a part of this Team!!! I feel responsible to encourage others and help
them achieve what they think may be impossible!
I would not replace the genuine kinship, Family for anything!
This group is growing I feel because of that Love, Encouragement and support!
I know by this group growing that can be tough and I think we can troubleshoot
that! Like orders and shirts if we were allowed to use the logo and had a couple
colors to pick from White, black, grey, yellow and pink???? We could just print
our own shirts if that is helpful???

I just know the growth with not stop because others have tasted and seen all we
have to offer as a group when it comes down to it it's about people helping
people and the encouragement to achieve and glean from one another! Maniacs
are staying with one another all over the world building life long Friendships!
Each time I meet one and get a chance to spend time they have added to my life
in such a special way!
Even as a few of us are planning a new tricities marathon here in Feb 2014 we
want to do it right and honor our team as we plan! (maniacs do it right! Not half
way and they are here for others!)

The NEW Michelob ULTRA Tacoma City Marathon is a scenic
point to point net downhill course. Starting at Tacoma
Narrows Airport runners will actually run the "runway".
Crossing the Tacoma Narrows Bridges will leave you in awe
of the great Puget Sound and views of Mt. Rainier. After the
short accent off the Narrows Bridge you will be treated to
easy rolling terrain through North Tacoma's Proctor District,
the home of the new Fleet Feet Tacoma location. The course
gradually descends through beautiful Pt. Defiance Park and
eventually comes down to the flat and fast Tacoma
Waterfront. The new finish line provides a flat and fast

Tacoma City Marathon. This will be the largest gathering

I had SO MUCH fun this year at the Seattle Quadzilla. It was third running and we had a record 45
finishers. Even though I only ran the last two I had a chance to meet so many of you. I encourage
you to plan a trip to Seattle next year, if a Quadzilla is something you want to do.

RHETORICAL REVELATIONS AND W(RITES)…
FROM THE RAMBUNCTIOUS REV
{Rookies: Steve Yee is the President of the Marathon Maniacs, co-founder with #2 Chris “Hollywood” Warren and #3 Tony
Phillippi, all of Washington State. “Rev” lives across the country, and writes a monthly letter to Prez here. Other maniacs
referred to below are described a bit more at the end.}
Dear Mr. Yee, of the Washington State Yees,
Hiya Prez! It is no secret why you and I are such good friends: opposites attract! See, you’re still running outdoor
marathons out west in the cold, getting your picture taken with pretty maniacs! I am still walking on indoor treadmills back
east in a warm gym, and, well, oddly they don’t sidle over to me there. But go to a marathon and you’re more popular
than Santa Claus his own self!
Ahh, but you deserve it... so how are you, Prez?
I was thinking about the different traits throughout our club. Do you remember what the club was like in 2004-5? With about 200 members, we were about five
groups: the Speedies (we had members winning more marathons in a year than I was entering; even you had 30-something Boston qualifiers in one year, causing me
considerable pause); the Ultras (they use 50-mile events to warm up for 100-milers); the Voluminous Ones (“oh, that year I only did 46 marathons, had an off year”), and the
Tri-athletes, like #3, Mr. Tony, biking, running, swimming (…yes, but can he putt?). Doing long distances in one sport is tough enough, but in three? You have to be some sort
of maniac to do that.
Oh yeah.
And the rest of us, in the “none of the above, exactly” crowd, were the Sane ones (hahahaha! gotchya again, Prez!). But Hey! We earned our yellow singlets, so we
were IN. What in the world I was doing among your incredible friends I could never quite figure. But I was in, and remain tickled to be so.
Well, now, with over 6,000 members, there’s a score of categories we could add! We are a club alright, a club of many categories. Many.
We’ve got Brits, Canadians, Brazilians, Australians, even Puyallupians. (One needs to tend to one’s geography. It’s a planet.)
We’ve got a hallowed group of Hall of Famers, remarkable people. We only need to run a skajillion marathons to join them! To paraphrase Jack Nicklaus, they have a
level of determination with which I am not familiar. I have had a good day when I MEET a Hall of Famer, never mind qualifying for it.
We’ve got some celebrities on board now… I mean besides “Hollywood.” {Hiya, Chris!} I’m curious about them. Do you think Beardsley and Yasso joined because they
just wanted to meet me, Prez, hmm? No? I guess not. Maybe to meet Lopez…he knows lots about running. Or Korecki? Ha! Maybe if they’re trying to sell running lessons!
Hahaha! Let’s see…maybe Kino… that guy’s bouncing off the walls, isn’t he? No wait, I got it! MacGyver! Yeah, to meet MacGyver! I’d join to meet that guy!
We have historical look-alikes... I know I’ve met Ben Franklin and Mitt Romney out there, despite their denials. We’ve got the Divas now, and girls in skirts instead of
shorts. Sometimes we’ve got guys in skirts. Both have appeared in the Pink.
We have people who have walked more miles and faster than some biking clubs bike. I’m right about that. I’ve walked behind Sue.
We have a bevy of Barefooters, a bold bunch, bunions be banned. Maybe their idea is a healthy one, but I don’t think it is transferrable to all the other sports, like say,
ice hockey. (Think about it.) But they would recommend it. I tell you, they’re maniacal.
We have three sub-groups of the inactive: those who have accomplished what they wished and moved on; others Taking-A-Break; and the inevitable injured reserve
list. May Santa bring some magical healing.
We have racers, sure; we also have a contingent of race directors! We have age-group winners in all the age-brackets, and a set of octogenarians that make my
students look retired.
Then we have a corral of Cowboys. And Texans. And Texans who are in the Guinness Book of Records. In addition to league leaders Larry and Yolanda, we have a
posse who dumbfound me, finishing the Bataan March standing, or completing that 135-mile through-the-desert-and-up-the-mountain picnic. If NASA wants to put a
runner instead of a car on the moon, we could field a team.
This one is a little odd, Prez. We have Half-Marathon-Fanatics now, did you know that? Did you know that they call a 13.1-mile race a half marathon? No no no no no,
I’ve run them both, and I promise you, Steve, one-half of a marathon is not 13 miles, it is 20, because that second half starts there and goes 6.2 longer miles. You can check
my splits for proof.
Mr. Yee, I like Christmas stories of Santa Claus and all the various elves, just like I like the story of Snow White and her seven dwarves: Sleepy, Dopey, Doc, Happy,
Sneezy, Bashful, and Grumpy. We’re all so very different in so many ways, and yet…we share many things in common in deeper ways.
You and your sidekicks brought us together, not just through running, but off of the strengths of these quiet, sometimes hidden, shared things. We live them out in our
celebrations and reunions, our congratulations and our swapping more stories. From them all the fables and stories emerge true: Santa’s giving, the can-do service of the
elves, the camaraderie of the dwarves. They live on endlessly, vividly, from some deeper well, from some something or somewhere else that is Real, this else.
From any persuasion we can find it, Prez, find it residing warmly, welcoming us, restful and leading to peaceful rest. It is particularly present in an ancient event,
celebrated yet…
A baby was born, out back, in a shed.
So then, Peace, and Goodwill, to you all.
