our Winter cover. Mackenzie
Carr talks about her reign as
the 2012 MRA Queen and her
plans for the future. You will

We were ecstatic to feature champion tie down roper, Stran
Smith as our “Behind the Chutes” cowboy. What an amazing life
he has had and a beautiful family. His wife Jennifer is featured
as our “Where are they now?” MRA Queen. A well known ESPN
broadcaster, Jennifer lives a busy life juggling her role as wife,
mother and broadcaster.

This recipe is taken from the www. Bakerella.com website, but with a holiday twist.
To bake cookies add...
1 slightly beaten egg
1/2 cup butter (melted slightly in the micro.)
1 teaspoon vanilla
Mix wet ingredients into dry ingredients.
Layer dry ingredients in jar like this:
First: flour, baking powder, baking soda and
salt
Second: oats
Third: m&ms
Fourth: chocolate chips
Fifth: brown sugar
Sixth: white sugar
Seventh: chopped pecans

Cowgirl Cookies Dry Ingredients
1 1/3 cup all purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup & leveled
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup cooking oats
3/4 cup Holiday m&ms
3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup white sugar
1/3 – 1/2 cup chopped pecans
Stir all the dry ingredients in a large mixing
bowl.

Mini Makeup Bag: Loreal Volumnous mascara, I always have
a few Mac lipsticks (never go anywhere without lipstick!), Laura
Mercer tinted moisturizer spf 20 (when you are out in the sun all
day rodeoing your skin needs some protection!), earrings (a few
pairs just in case!), Listerine mints (You never know what rodeo
you are at where you may run into your prince charming cowboy!).
Horse treats: All
of my horses are spoiled
and get treats before and
after they compete. If
I was a horse, I would
need treats too!
Note book with
pen: I always carry a
note book with me at
the rodeo to keep notes
on the stock. It’s important to write down how
fast each calf or steer is
breaking so in case you
draw that same calf/
steer you know what
you are in for and won’t
break the barrier. I also
take notes during the
goat tying event. I write down what each of the goats look like and
what they do.
Bobby pins, rubber bands and lotion: By the end of
the day at the rodeo your hair is falling out and your skin is getting dry. Bobby pins, rubber bands and lotion are your friends by
the end of the day!
The muti-colored rubber bands: I always rubber band
my feet into the stirrups when I barrel race. When your horse is
running and turning that fast you don’t have time to lose a stirrup
and fall off balance, so I always rubber band in just in case.
Sun glasses: My newest favorite style of sun glasses are the cateye style. They are so fun and vintage!
Rosary: I have strong Faith and really believe in the power of
prayer. I always keep a Rosary on hand because you never know
when someone will need a prayer.
My Roy Rogers pocket knife: I always carry my pocket
knife with me at the rodeo because it feels like I always need it for
something–cutting hay bales or pieces of rubber to put on my sad-
dle. It’s also a good idea to carry a knife at a rodeo because I have
seen lost of accidents where people/animals get tangled up in rope
and need to be cut free. This knife is really tuff and feminine at the
same time! Cowgirls need to carry knifes too, not just cowboys!
Leopard headband/wild rag:
Usually I wake up early every rodeo morning and it is very cold
outside. One thing
that I learned from
my Papa, a buckaroo
from Nevada, is that
keeping your neck
warm with a scarf
or as the cowboys
call them, a wild rag
helps to keep you
warm. I use this as a
wild rag to keep me
warm on cold mornings and then after
the rodeo when my
hair is a mess from
my cowboy hat I use
it as a headband.

Bright colors this winter is the way to go, it can make
your skin and eye features pop...

inter 2013 is no exception to the rule. And while the temperature is one
of the things regularly driving the moods we portray through color, the
color trends for winter 2013 aren’t all cloudy greys or cheerless blues. If
the color trend predictions are anything to go by, our wardrobes will be
filled with traditional winter tones punctuated by optimistic pops of bright color. Bright colors are the way to go, it
can make your skin and eye features pop, along with the
jewelry or whatever you are wearing to stand out.

Health and Happiness...

K cowgirls, tis the season and lady winter is packing her usual delightful dichotomy. She brings us serene snow-covered
pastures; cozy nights by a roaring fire; and quality time with our loved ones during this special time of year. And…she also
brings us the busy hustle and bustle of holiday preparations and celebrations (along with extra barn chores!). So how can
you strike a balance between resting and rockin’? How can you keep your cowgirl spirit a-glow while staying healthy and
happy this season?
To bring out the best, most beautiful you this winter, Cowgirls In Style whipped
up a list of the hottest health tips to give you an extra boost of beauty, health,
and peace. Here goes!
Girls gone green...
Eating greens like spinach and kale does wonders for your body. Ever had a
green smoothie? It’s a mean, green health and beauty machine that can greatly improve the quality of your skin and hair, help your digestion, uplift your
mood, and assist in weight loss. Plus, green smoothies can be crazy tasty.
Here’s one recipe that’ll get ya
glowin’ in no time:
The Berry Bonanza
• 1-2 handfuls of spinach
• 1 medium banana
• 1 handful of blueberries
• A few strawberries
Fill the bottom inch or so of
your blender with filtered water. Add the spinach and liquefy. Next, add the banana and blend until the texture is smooth and creamy.
Then add the berries and blend briefly. Voila! A super easy, nutritionally outstanding, delicious way to get your greens without cheese OR salad dressing.
You glow girl!
Move It, Move It...
We feel better when we exercise. You know
that. So how can you overcome a major case
of the “…but I don’t wannas…” before working out? Simple. Find a way to move that you
love to do. For me that means Lady Gaga
dance parties in the kitchen and taking Vinyasa yoga classes. For you it might mean
zumba classes, running, Mousercising, playing Twister, chasing the kids, etc.
As cowgirls, our barns offer us many ways to
bust a move (especially in the winter weather!). Mucking stalls, lifting hay bales, picking
out hooves, shoveling snow, etc. They may be

t’s that time again! The Miss Rodeo America pageant will be held in
Las Vegas, NV December 6-12th. Get ready for high fashion, beautiful women and classic horsemanship as these contestants take on
a rigorous week filled with high intensity competition.
These energetic cowgirls are judged in the major categories of personality, appearance, horsemanship and rodeo knowledge & presentation, demonstrating her skills in public speaking, personal interviewing,
horsemanship, knowledge of rodeo and general equine science, current
event awareness, photogenic qualities, visual poise, and overall professionalism.
The Miss Rodeo America organization and pageant competition exists
for the purposes of selecting a young lady to serve as an official spokesperson for the sport of professional rodeo and providing educational opportunities for those young women who compete
in the pageant. Miss Rodeo America travels some 100,000 miles during the year of her reign, appearing at nearly 100 rodeo
performances, as well as appearances at schools, civic groups and other special events, educating the public and creating
awareness about the sport of rodeo, its sponsors, and its opportunities.
Talented, beautiful, and well-spoken, Miss Rodeo America is the ideal ambassador to represent and promote America’s
Original Professional Sport – rodeo – serving as the official spokesperson for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

called Western haute couture, but the
humble beginnings in Yoakum, Texas prove
otherwise. The family business started in
1989 when two of the three McMullen sisters, Audrey
and Cheryl, built an interior design business in Yoakum,
Texas. But it was during a trip to Dallas Market Center where they were
looking for home interior ideas, that the fashion business was truly
born. On this particular trip to market, Cheryl wore a Pendleton coat
which attracted attention with people asking where she got the coat. A
suggestion from their dad to make and sell the coat was the beginning

Cowgirls In Style: When and how did you get into rodeo? Did
you grow up in a rodeo family?
Stran Smith: I started rodeoing when I was 16 years old. I was
born on a ranch and roped all my life. My dad and granddad
roped. Dad, Clifton Smith, went to the National Finals in 1960
& 1962. He was the first calf roper to get off on the right side
of the horse. My brother and all of my sisters are all involved in
rodeo one way or another. My nephews, Tuf and Clif Cooper and
Steson Vest all rope calves professionally, as well.
CIS: How many times have you qualified for the NFR?
S.S.: 11 times

CIS: What is your favorite thing to do in your off time? Your
hobbies?
S.S.: I rodeo, ranch, and have three children. There is no off time.
CIS: How did you and your wife(Jennifer MRA queen 1995)
meet?
S.S: My sister introduced us. Shari was one of Jennifer’s judges at
Miss Rodeo Texas. 1995 was my first year to qualify for the NFR.
That was the year she won Mis Rodeo America. It was just fate.

CIS: It is important for your body to be in great shape, do you
have a regular fitness routine?
S.S.: Fitness is very important to me. I work on my fitness every
day in one way or another. I feel it is very important to have
balance with not only cardio and weight training, but even more
important is diet and flexibility. I do a lot of unconventional routines to improve balance and quick twitch reflexes.

CIS: You have been very successful in your life. Any words of
advice for those pursuing their dreams?
S.S.: I think it’s important to work hard, have balance in your life,
and surround yourself with great Godly people that want and
expect the best for and from you.

Mackenzie Carr
As Mackenzie’s year winds down, she
chats with us about her life and the
highlights of her reign.

Cowgirls In Style: Where did you grow up? Were you raised on a ranch/farm?
Mackenzie Carr: I grew up on a small ranch in Vernonia, a very small timber community
in Northwest Oregon.
CIS: Have you ridden horses all of your life?
M.C.: Horses have always been a big part of my life. I began riding when I was six years
old and devoted much of my time to 4-H, the High School Equestrian Team, and showing.
CIS: How old were you when you entered your first rodeo pageant?
M.C.: I was 16 when I competed in my first pageant. My mom somewhat shoved me in
that direction my first year and I was fortunate enough to make it on the court. After that
I was hooked.
CIS: What do you think is the hardest part of the competition?
M.C.: I think that the hardest part for many young women is that if an event doesn’t go
exactly as they would like it to, they get so down on themselves and the rest of their pageant is ruined. As my mom says, “Flush it!” You are never going to be able to have a redo,
so you might as well move on and excel in the next event.
CIS: What has the past year been like? What is your favorite part of being the reigning MRA? Any experiences you would like to relate...
M.C.: The past year has been a whirlwind of an experience. I had the opportunity to see
the country and do things I would have never dreamed of. My favorite part has been
getting to meet thousands of different people, who have all been amazing to talk with.
It’s getting to share your experiences and passion for the sport of rodeo with others that
makes this job so rewarding. I was able to travel to New England to teach up and coming
rodeo queens the ins and outs of what it takes to represent rodeo. I would have never
thought our western heritage and influence would stretch as far as Massachusetts. It
seems that everywhere I travel, there is someone who is involved with the rodeo industry.

CIS: What is your favorite thing to do when you come home from a busy week?
M.C.: According to my parents, my favorite thing to do when I am home is fall asleep on
the couch, but I really enjoy cooking my own food. Being out on the road as much as I
am, rarely do I get to eat a home cooked meal. Never fail, I am always in the kitchen in
my time at home.

“The Hobbit.”
CIS: What are your plans after your reign is over?
M.C.: After my reign is over, I will be going back to school
at Oregon State University. I have about 2 1/2 years left to
finish my Construction Engineering Management degree.
CIS: What advice would you give girls who are wanting
to get involved in rodeo pageantry?
M.C.: I would tell those who are wanting to get involved
in pageantry to go for it. There are so many ways it can
benefit young women; everything from scholarships to interview and public speaking skills. It’s such a wonderful opportunity.

CIS: What is your favorite style of clothing to wear? Are
you more a jeans, t-shirt/boots person or dress up, etc...
M.C.: My style of clothing has definitely changed over the
past year. Normally, I am more of a tomboy, but being more
involved with fashion through Wrangler, Justin Boots, and
Montana Silversmiths this year has caused me to think
more about what I am wearing. I still love the classic jeans
and a t-shirt, but it’s fun to wear a dress and get all gussied
up.
CIS: What are your hobbies, interests outside of rodeo?
M.C.: Outside of rodeo, my hobbies include cooking, being
outdoors, and playing volleyball. All of these are ways that
I relieve stress and I get to have a lot of fun while doing it.

Cowboy?

Looking for someone to spend the holidays with, or hoping to
get a box of chocolate and flowers from that special someone
on Valentine’s days? Finding someone online may be a great
way to Lasso your Sweetheart before the Holidays!
I
f you feel like you might need a few tips on finding
that special someone before the holidays, the website, Country Singles Online has some tips to share.
CSO tells us that the most important factor in creating a
winning profile is to post a great photo. The first thing that
people see in your dating profile is your photo.
Profiles with photographs get many more responses than those that don’t. The picture should
show the best of you without being pretentious.
It also should show you as you look like today.
Make sure to select a close up photo of yourself for your profile and you can include other
photos, such as full body profiles in your photo
albums. The more photos you include, the more
interest you will evoke. And make sure you smile
in your photos.
Know what you want: This may seem easy, but ask most
people why they are in online dating they will only tell you
“to find a date”. We at Country Singles Online have broken it down so that our website contains singles who love
the Country Lifestyle. By joining specialty sites, it increases
your odds of finding someone with the same interests and
characteristics as you. List down what you want from the
type of relationship (short term, long term or marriage),
age, gender, etc... Include also, things like whether you want
(or have) children.
CSO talks about a member who joined their website who
had a great username of “Dusty.” Dusty had posted a photo
of herself which was a close up and showed her dressed
as a cowgirl with hat and denim jacket. Dusty was a great
success story. She included information about herself that
relayed her interests, personality and what she was looking for. She met a man from Australia who owned
a large ranch. They were married about a year
after they met on CSO. “It was a great success
story,” says CSO. They sent many photos of the
wedding, the ranch and the wedding party.
Another essential is to create a list of must haves,
good to have and no-nos. Must haves are things
that you can’t do without. These could be passions or hobbies as well as other interests. Remember the movie “Must Love Dogs”? The title is based on
a must have that was posted on a popular dating site. Good
to have means just that; things your potential mate might
have that you like, but could do without. The no-nos are
things you can’t stand or will not tolerate.
Make a list of things that make you... well, you. What makes
you unique? This will help create more “fodder” for your
dating profile.
Brainstorm a catchy screen name: Your screen name, also
known as your username, should be concise and easy to re-
member. Don’t be just another “cutecowgirl26” or “cowboystud35”. Make it meaningful. Let it say something unique about
you. Try including things you like to do, what
you’re looking for, or some activity you participate in.
Start with a good, attention-grabbing headline: Most dating sites usually provide a box
for a 100 character (typically) headline. This
is perhaps the second most important aspect of your online
dating profile, after your picture. You have a split second to
catch their eye. It is what makes prospects decide whether
or not to read the rest of your profile. Treat this the same
way as your screen name. It should be meaningful and give
a hint of who you are or what you want (of course, without
revealing too much personal information). You could study
headlines that attract your attention in your chosen dating
site(s) and emulate these without directly copying them. Remember to be positive.
Be honest: If you lie, it will catch up with you somewhere
down the road.
You want someone who will accept you for who
you are, not who
you wish you
were.
Start writing your
profile based on
your notes. Most
people make the
mistake of writing their profile
right there on the
dating site. Don’t
do this. Draft it
on a separate piece of paper or on your favorite word processing program (such as Word, Word Perfect, Word Pad
etc.). Write as fast as you can without hurrying. The objective here is to get your words down. Don’t pay attention
to spelling or grammar at this stage. And do write like you
speak. Imagine your ideal “date” seating right there in front
of you, and tell her/him what you want and why you are the
best choice for her/him.
Polish: Save your profile for at least a day, and then come
back and edit. Correct any grammatical and spelling errors.
You can add anything you think might make the profile better or remove anything that seems needless.
Post it: Now all you have to do is post your online dating
profile. You may need to edit it farther to fit a particular dating site, but the hard work is already done.
In order for your online dating profile to truly come alive,
you should strive to make yours not just specific, but make
your specifics more specific. For example saying that you
love George Strait music may be specific, but adding which George Strait song is your favorite and
why is more specific. This also helps give your prospect something to say when responding.
Though your personal ad (another name for your
profile) should “sell” you and cast you in the best
light possible, you should avoid the appearance of
bragging. If you’re really good at something and
think it might help your personal ad, attempt to
present it in a neutral way. If you are good at playing the
piano, for instance, you can say something like “my friends
say I’m really good at the piano and love to hear me play”.
Though you should list the things you want in a partner,
avoid making it appear like a laundry list. And keep in mind
that no one person will satisfy all your wants. Be flexible.
Avoid clichés: Using clichés is not always a bad thing, but do
avoid the overused ones. Use capital letters and exclamation marks sparingly

information online. CSO says that there should be no reason to give out any personal contact information online as
most websites have their own email systems. If they don’t,
do not join it.

5 Incredible Tips To Help You Become The Best Rider You Can Be!
I am going
to give you
some great
tips that will
help you become a better rider and
take you to
a new level
in all areas in
your riding!
To
become
great horsemen
and
horsewomen
you must understand the
horse. To become a great
rider
you
must understand how a
horse moves
and how each
gait has its
own rhythm
and beat. You also need some knowledge of your own
body, how you are made and how your body’s movement
can help the horse. A horse and a human both have many
movable parts and joints. Your riding will improve dramatically once you learn to move with your horse. Have you
ever seen a rider that is so beautiful that they look like they
are one with their horse? My goal is for you to learn how
to flow with your horse and ride like you are one with the
horse.
1.Unlock Your Pelvis
Many riders have learned to ride by trying to hold very still
on their horse. I have also seen many coaches and teachers
tell their students to sit still with the goal in mind to look
very good on a horse. There is no doubt that a rider who
is still on a horse looks better than one who is moving all
around, however it is impossible to catch a horse’s rhythm
and not move your body in any place at all. I learned a
long time ago that your body has to move or “break” with
the horse’s movement in order to be an effective and good
rider. In order to truly look good on your horse there is a
correct place your body needs to move or “break” while
riding your horse. You need to “unlock your pelvis” and
move with your horse. Many people try to sit very still and
then find that they are pumping through their waist to the
horse’s movement. Instead, keep your waist still and move
through your hips or pelvis with your horse’s movement.
At the lope or canter, scoop up your horse like a rocking
chair. Both of my daughters, Brook and Bree, show horses
with me and have beautiful seats. Brook, my oldest daughter, used to love showing in horsemanship. She always excelled in horsemanship because she was a natural looking
rider. From the time she was little I encouraged her to find
the rhythm of the horse and keep her pelvis unlocked and
moving. She won the Western Horsemanship two years in
a row at the Congress with a natural, but effective seat!
2.Breathe Correctly
The art of breathing correctly has huge benefits to becoming a better rider. When a rider is breathing correctly they
are helping their body get in the correct position on their
horse. When a person get nervous, afraid or excited their
breathing can change. They may hold their breath or take
rapid short breaths. As I am training horses I pay attention
to their breathing. Horses that are mad or very stressed
out will also hold their breath. When I see a horse release
their air I know they are starting to relax. Practice rhythmic
breathing and breathing deep full breaths and it will do
wonders for your riding. Your horse will feel it and relax
underneath you. When you take rapid short breaths that
are shallow, you tend to arch your back. This brings your
seat up and off your horses back and you may also tend to
lean forward. Try taking a deep full breath using your entire
diaphragm. You can tell if you are using your diaphragm by
putting your hand over your waist. If you push your hand
out with each breath you are breathing correctly. This also
allows your lower back and tail bone to sit down securely
on your horse. You will then find that you are better able
to feel your horse’s rhythm and catch his motion, making
it easier to unlock your pelvis and move with your horse!
3.Separate Your Hands From Your Body
I teach my riders to move their hands independently from
their bodies. Many riders, in trying to sit still will get stiff
and rigid in their hands and arms. They may also move
their hands with their body. Remember, your hands are an
aide as are your legs and seat! Practice using them all independently of one another! If you bend your elbows and
lock them at your side you may tend to move your upper
body and your arms together as if they were one piece.
This will make it difficult to have that soft feel in your hands
that we all desire to have. When training or schooling, keep
your arms away from your body and be mindful and aware
of what your hands are doing! If you bump or correct your horse you want to
use the pounds of pressure
that are in your hands. You
will only achieve this if your
hands are working independently, and are not locked to
your body. If you bump or
correct your horse with your
hands and have the weight
of your upper body because
your arms are locked you will
be more abrupt and harsh in
your correction and you will
add more pounds of pressure than you intend to!
Remember – separate your
arms from your body, stay
soft and light in your hands
and ride mindfully!
4.Count and Find the
Rhythm of the Gait
Horses have a distinct beat
or “rhythm” in every one of
their gaits. Every horse (except gaited horses) should
have a four beat walk, a two
beat trot, and a three beat
lope or cantor. Remember,
you want to move with your
horse unlocking your hips
or pelvis, breathing deep from your diaphragm and riding
mindfully, with your hands and your arms working independently from your body. If you use your body in this
way, you can now focus on your horse’s individual gaits and
ride effectively catching his rhythm. This technique will take
time to master but practice makes perfect and you can train
your body to be in tune to your horse’s rhythm and gaits!
Practice first on the trot as it is the easiest gait to catch the
rhythm. The trot is a definite “one – two” beat. Count it in
your mind or even say it out loud. Unlock your pelvis to
move with the rhythm “one –two, one – two”. When you
step up to the lope you will find that there is a moment of
hesitation and the beat is not an even “one – two – three”
but rather, “one – two . . . . . three” with a second of hesitation between the “two” and “three.” In that moment of hesitation your body can scoop it up like a rocking chair. Find
the rhythm and you will start to feel one with your horse!
5.Use Soft Eyes
My final tip will help you put everything together! “Soft
eyes” is a term that I use to change your focus from a fixed
gaze to a more open, softer gaze. When you are staring at
a fixed object you tend to lean toward that object. Also,
as your peripheral vision decreases, your sense of feel decreases. You use your vision to tell your body what is going
on. Many riders will stare at their horse’s poll as they are
training or riding to see what is going on. This becomes
a habit. I recommend
changing your fixed
gaze to one where
you look into space a
few inches above the
horse’s poll. You will
find that this increases your peripheral
vision, also allowing
your body to feel the
horse and increasing
your sense of feel.
You can still see the
poll and where the
horse’s head is while
allowing your sense of
feel help you to find
the rhythm of your
horse! Your timing
and body’s responses
will become better
and you will become
aware of what is going on underneath
you!
These tips will help
you to break old bad
habits. Remind yourself of each of these
tips before you get on
your horse and gradually you will have
new and better riding habits. Be patient with yourself as
this will take time, but you can do it! Good luck to you and
I hope that these tips will help you to be the best rider that
you can be!

Cowgirls In Style: Where are you from?
Jennifer Smith: I am originally from Borger, Texas,
but have lived here in Childress, TX for 11 years.
CIS: How did you get started in Rodeo?
J.S.: I participated in 4-H playdays and Quarter Horse
shows growing up. I got a very good quarter horse
and continued showing horses in high school and
college.
CIS: How did you get into broadcasting?
J.S.: ESPN was looking for a new reporter for the
sport of rodeo the year I was handing down the MRA
title, and they asked me to audition for the position.
I changed my degree and worked in local television
news to get experience to go along my rodeo knowledge.
CIS: What is your sense of fashion?
J.S.: My taste in fashion is about as diverse as my
taste in music... Everything from classic, western, high
fashion, bohemian and everything in between. Some
would say I’m classy with a lil’ Sass. Some would say
I’m sassy with a lil’ class... ;) Hopefully more class
than sass, but one thing is certain, I will usually have
on a pair of Ariat boots. I am officially a “Boot-aholic.” She who dies with the most boots wins. That’s
me. I am also fashion hoarder. I love mixing old with
new and taking a few chances here and there. I love
love Charlie One Horse cowboy hats and fedoras,
scarves, headbands and wild rags, feathers and flowers, turquoise and silver... And Handbags!!! That’s
why I have created a line of Handbags.
Function meets western fashion, because as a Mom, I western fashion. I
NEED function.

How the MRA Pageant affected Jennifer’s Life
CIS: Tell a little about your family?
J.S.: I don’t know how I became so fortunate to be blessed with my amazing
family. My parents have always loved
and encouraged me to reach for the
stars. I am married to a amazing Godly
man who is my best friend. Stone(9)
Scout(7), and Selah (20 months) complete my heart and soul. I am so proud
of my boys and little girl. The word
Selah is Hebrew for ‘Amen.’ And that is
what Selah is... the little AMEN on our
family. We are now complete.
CIS: Tell us a little of what impact the
MRA has had on your life?
J.S.: I had such an opportunity for
growth during my year as Miss Rodeo
America. As I traveled the country and
parts of Europe promoting rodeo, I
gained a new sense of assurance and
ability to ‘go with the flow,’ but MOST
IMPORTANTLY, I gained relationships

is such a vital entity for the education
and promotion of the sport of rodeo. It
was just such an honor to represent this
sport I love. As an individual, my reign as
Miss Rodeo America literally changed the
course of my life. I was a chemistry major with plans to pursue physical therapy
when ESPN approached me about becoming an Equestrian TV correspondent, and
I changed my degree to Broadcast Journalism. When I look back on my experiences as Miss Rodeo Texas and Miss Rodeo
America, overwhelming gratitude fills my
heart. I had so many amazing adventures
and growth opportunities that year.

C.I.S.: What is your advice for those wanting to get into
rodeo pageantry and even the MRA pageant?
J.S.: I was not involved in pageantry growing up. It was
something I began pursuing in college for scholarship opportunities. I believe if you keep everything in perspective,
pageantry is a great opportunity to gain confidence, speaking skills, and leadership skills. I graduated form college
Magna Cum Laude, not because I was incredibly smart. It
was because I studied until I couldn’t get it wrong. That is
how I approach Miss Rodeo America. Work hard and pursue excellence. It is vital that we keep everything is perspective, though. Win or lose, a reign is only a year. Set your
goals to the stars. Continue to reach for goals beyond MRA.
Life after is amazing, as well.
We are so busy preparing for the Nationals Finals, as well.
We are adding a new Afternoon Talk Show at the MGM
Grand that will feature Million Dollar Pro rodeo Cowboys
and celebrities. It is going to be so fun. Stran and I are also
volunteers for the National Finals cowboy church service,
Elevation Sunday that is held the 1st Sunday morning of the
NFR at the MGM. So we stay busy.
Of course, being Wife and Mom and watching my kids grow
and mature is now the biggest priority and joy in my life.

CIS: What are you currently doing?
J.S.: Stran and I have been involved in an exciting project
this year with Carroll Leather. We have taken Stran’s knowledge from the 3rd generation ranch and Carroll’s knowledge of leather and outerwear to create sTs Ranchwear and
Handbags. We are debuting the line at WNFR this year with
a booth at the NRS Gift Show at the MGM Grand and Archundi’s at Cowboy Christmas. I have consulted for other
companies in the western industry, so it is exciting to work
on our own brand. It has truly been a labor of love, creating
a practical line for a true lifestyle.

CIS:What are your goals?
J.S: My consistent goal is to be cognoscente to where the
Holy Spirit wants me. A wise man asks me often...”What has
God told you lately? If you don’t know, it is not because
he isn’t talking.” God has blessed me immensely and with
those blessings comes a huge responsibility to be a blessing
to others. Stran and I both feel a calling to be positive mentors and role models to such a great group of kids in our
western industry and community. In the midst of our busy
lives, I always want to keep that in perspective.

ellie Carr, grew up on her family ranch near Royal,
Nebraska. The same ranch that her mother grew
up on.
While growing up, Kellie’s mother, Becky Carr, worked on horseback most days and did photography as a hobby. Kellie started
working with a digital camera when she was an associate editor
at Quarter Horse New, wanting to illustrate her own stories without sending out another photographer. She credits Ross Hecox
from Western Horseman for taking a lot of time teaching her the
ropes. Kellie says, “To learn from a phenomenal photographer
like Ross was amazing.” After shooting a lot of horses, ranches,
etc… she moved on to people. And so her story begins...
We were able to ask Kellie some questions that she most graciously answered about her life, career and advice to others who
are wanting to get into the photography business.
Cowgirls In Style: Even though this is your first year as the MRA
photographer, who have you been able to meet and what have
you been able to do in your career? What has been your highlight so far?
Kellie Carr: I have been so fortunate to know some amazing
people in my life! In my photography career, I’ve photographed
Trevor & Shada Brazile and family, Stran & Jennifer Smith and
family, Clif Cooper and Tuf Cooper, Amber and Clint Cooper, and

their oldest son, Casen; obviously Roy Cooper; Sherry Cervi’s
ranch and family, and a lot of other people I’ve done stories on
and taken photos of back when I was a journalist - Tuff Hedeman, Bob Tallman, Allen Bach, Cody Ohl, and so many more I
don’t really count. I also worked in the reining world for a few
years and took a lot of photos for Shawn Flarida, who is the #1
reiner in the world. I think the biggest “name” I’ve ever had in
one of my photos was George Strait, who was at Amber & Clint’s
wedding. My very first wedding ever and I think I was too dumb
to even be nervous about it....I just clicked away! But that was
really fun.
CIS: You were in rodeo pageantry yourself, can you elaborate
more on that?
K.C.: I started my sophomore year of high school, and over the
years, I held several amateur and pro rodeo titles, including my
hometown title of Miss Burwell Rodeo, and was first runner up
three times to Miss Rodeo Nebraska.
CIS: Tell a little about your family
K.C.: I run the photography business with my mom, and my dad
is a rancher and owns a backgrounding yard. My parents have
been married for 40 years. I have a sister, Sarah, who is married
with two daughters, Gracie, who will be 10 in December, and
Peyten who is 18 months. I have another “honorary” sister, Liz,
who is married to Cody, and they have three kids, Abbie, Colt
and Zane. So I have lots of subjects to photograph!
CIS: Tell us about your business?
K.C.: My mom and I started KC Creations Photography
together in July of 2011. We started planning it almost
a year prior, and really worked hard to start off right.
Since we’re in such a small town, we shoot everything
- newborns, children, families, high school seniors,
boudoir, weddings, equine....I like to joke that I’ll shoot
anything but your pet snake! Our business is based
around selling wall art, photographic prints, canvas
products and albums.
CIS: What else have you done career wise in your life?
K.C.: After I graduated from Oklahoma State with my
BA in Journalism and Public Relations, I went to work
for the National High School Rodeo Association in Denver. I was the assistant coordinator for the Wrangler Junior High Division and we put on the very first national

After I moved to Texas, I worked as a freelance journalist and then as an associate editor at Quarter Horse
News. After a round of layoffs there, I decided to start

ucky Hare was formed when Andrea Schellenberg woke one morning wanting to make her young
boys a stuffed horse. Her youngest
son, who is a year old, had been given a stuffed horse by his
Grandmother for Christmas. Andrea carefully dismantled it for
the pattern, and it took her all day to recreate. Excited to show
her accomplishment, she posted it

friends. The response was overwhelmingly supportive, and to top
things off, as often happens with
social media, her creation went a
little “viral.”

Andrea has not always been sewing, though. She has a very busy
life. She manages the nearly 100acre family farm, takes care of
three very active country boys,
assists her husband with two businesses that he runs, and she raises
a few fine Quarter Horses, which
she considers her true labor of love. Andrea’s family is very mission-minded, and the five of them just recently returned from a
month-long trip to a Mission Academy in Guyana, South America, deep in the heart of the rain forest.
The sizes vary. The smallest pony, the
one she affectionately calls the “foal,”
is approximately 7” tall and 8” long.
The medium pony, which is the most
popular of the three sizes is 13” tall
and 14” long. The largest of the three,
which is nearly three feet tall, is proving to be a very sought-after creation.
Many people have joined hands with Andrea to make Lucky Hare
possible. Andrea is fulfilling a dream she never knew she had.
Every single day she meets new
Andrea’s ponies come in various sizes and every color imaginable. According to Andrea, every pony is a joy to create. Some
customers, although she prefers to call them friends instead of
customers, ask her to create custom ponies in specific color patterns, and some prefer to be surprised,
much like the birth of a new foal. The
most popular of the two is the custom
pony, of course. The customers send
photos of their favorite horse, and Andrea artistically re-creates their pony in
precious, stuffed form.
Lucky Hare may have evolved by accident, but each month proves
it to grow stronger and stronger. Andrea’s pride shows in each
pony, and customers can’t wait to get their hands on one of their
own. You cannot mistake the joy it brings to Andrea when a
customer sends in a happy picture of their pony in its

Cowgirls In Style: Tell us a little bit about yourself?
Sheena Robbins: My name is Sheena Rhee Robbins and I train barrel horses and rodeo full time!! My dad Dale Robbins, trains cutting horses and my mother, Brenda Robbins works for the county of
Fresno.. My mom used to run barrels and showed cutting horses...
I have an older brother Cody Robbins, who trains rope horses and
team ropes at PRCA rodeos and open ropings, and he has the most
perfect little daughter, Ruby Gail Robbins!! She’s 6 and started junior rodeos this year... I travel with my little dog Ace! He’s a 9 year
old Carrin Terrier... I haul Shorty (the horse I made the NFR on in
2009) and a younger horse, Pistol right now!!
CIS: If you don’t mind us asking, how old are you?
S.R.: Wow, I am getting a little age on me... 29!!!
CIS: Where are you from:
S.R.: I was born and raised in Fresno, CA!!
CIS: Did you grow up in the country? Do you live in the country
now?
S.R.: I grew up in the country and live in the country now!! Could
never imagine living in town...
CIS: When did you start riding horses? How many horses
do you own?
S.R.: I guess you can say I was born on the back of a horse...
Started riding as a baby!! Than I started showing cutting
horses and entering the junior rodeos at 7!! My whole family (grandparents and parents) all roped and ran barrels so it
was just fitting that I did too.... I fell in love with going “fast”
and never have looked back!! My first barrel horse was given
to me by my grandpa and my dad broke him then I “trained”
him on the pattern but at 6 and 7 years old I am pretty sure
he trained me!!! My mom helped me and Yeller become a
team and she’s been a constant coach and supporter of my
barrel racing career!!! Yeller still lives at my grandparents
place where he was born 29 years ago... Right now I have
wayyy too many horses!! LoL
CIS: Why do you like the sport? Any advice to girls starting up?
S.R.: As a little girl I just fell in love with horses... That passion grew and now I can’t imagine my life without running
barrels!! The best advice I can give a girl starting out is to
Dream BIG!!! Always put your horses needs first and believe
in your horse!!
CIS: When did you first qualify for the NFR?
S.R.: I qualified for the NFR in 2009 and was 16th in 2010.
CIS: Your history in the NFR?
Shorty got hurt the very first day at 2009 NFR and I was
blessed to get to ride Rachelle Ross’s great mare Billie until
mine was better... I got to get on him in the 3rd round!! I
placed in a few rounds and placed in the avg!!! It was soooo
much fun!!!
CIS: What are your hobbies?
S.R.: Don’t have any real hobbies besides shopping when
I am not riding!!! Shorty is a pretty spoiled pony!!! Maybe I
should start golfing?!?!
CIS: What are your favorite style of clothes?
S.R.: I wear Cruel Girl jeans and shirts!!! And everybody
laughs cause my everyday “uniform” is jeans and a tank top!!!
I live in my flip flops when not riding tho...
CIS: What are your goals?
S.R.: I want to qualify for the NFR again and continue to train
and run barrels!!! Nothing better than seeing a horse you
trained go and win with someone else.... Very rewarding!!

The Western Wanderer

Some rate the Enders Hotel in the top 100 haunted hotels in the
USA. Many stories, eery photos and recordings exist documenting the
ghostly residents of this hotel.
A
s we travel the west we have found some of the best examples of the old west in a few of the many ghost towns that
still sit quietly waiting to take you back to yesteryear. This time however, we found something a little different—a
100 year old ghost hotel! While wandering through southern Idaho we happened upon the old, but recently remodeled Enders Hotel and Museum in Soda Springs.
Sightings have been reported in the
basement, staircase to the second
floor, room 207 and third floor. Seeing “things” in the mirrors are also
common.
Most visitors find this old beauty a nice place to stay, decorated throughout with antiques and artifacts from frontier
America as was in 1917. Many of the rooms on the second
floor and lobby are now used as a museum with furniture,
pictures, and stuffed animals. Some of the pieces have
been used in western movies.
Many people stay not knowing they are in a haunted hotel! Some rate it in the top 100 haunted hotels in the USA.

Our group consisted of six. We weren’t ready to retire
too early so the hotel staff accommodated us and set up a
table and chairs in the lobby so we could play cards as was
done in the old west days.
We survived the night, but only after braving the long
hallway to the bathroom while the old black and white photos of its residents sternly stared us down.
An added bonus to your visit to Soda Springs is its most
famous attraction, the Soda Springs Geyser. It is located
right behind the hotel parking lot. It goes off every hour
on the hour and if you get a rear facing room, you can see
and hear it from your room along with the Union Pacific
train that passes 2 or 3 times in the night, just to the north.
You’re looking for adventure, right?
As you travel the west seek out the old cabins and
hotels that are scattered throughout the west to give you
the whole experience and...don’t forget to keep your nose
to the wind!

What We Do...
For 11 years (with 3 kids) I shared every weekend with people in the high
school rodeo circuit in North Texas. My kids were members of the Texas
High School Rodeo Association, Lone Star High School Rodeo Association
and several others (depending on whether it was my daughters or son).
Over this time period, I met some of my best friends and we have stayed
in touch over the years. My youngest child graduated in 2004 (and yes,
I’m bragging) after winning the TSHRA steer wrestling championship. The
rodeo horses returned to the house after college and all of my kids moved
on with their lives. I would occasionally ride, but hated to ride alone. This
year several of the ex-rodeo moms got together for a trail ride and dinner.
We had so much fun that we agreed to get together each month. We’ve had
trail rides, a field trip to Weatherford (to shop at Teskey’s of course) and
have created our own organization Happy Trails Cowgirls. With tonguein-cheek we decided that our kids had fun with the horses and now its our
turn. One of our members dieted and learned to ride so she could be part
of the group. We have invited ex-rodeo moms, other horse-type friends
and even our grown children to join us.
We’ve got an event for each month through March which includes a Christmas party dinner at a really nice steak house so we can all dress up in our
finest cowgirl outfits (any excuse to wear our Old Gringo boots...) and go
out to eat, a trip to the Fort Worth Stock Show rodeo to watch and cheer
on our fellow member Sherry Riggs, who is a 60-year-old pivot setter at
more than 30 of the rodeo’s performances each year and of course, more
trail rides. We’re riding at the ranches of members and at local public trails.
In March, we’ll plan for the next six months and have plans to include an
overnight trail ride .
The 25 members are varied. A couple of dental hygenists, teachers, a professional photographer, vet tech...each of us are as different as we are alike.
Mostly, we just love the horses and missed seeing each other. The conversations are certainly different these days. Instead of barrel racing times and
team roping partners, we talk about weight loss, menopause and grandkids. But the main thing is we are finally back together. The old steer wrestling, calf and barrel horses are now trail horses and adapting wonderfully.

“Happy Trails Cowgirls.”
