Gastfriend, a graduating senior at Lower Moreland High School, received the Concordia Trust Excellence in German Award during Lower Moreland’s Senior Award Night on May 21. To express his thanks for his $250 gift, Benjamin wrote “I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for being selected as a recipient of the Concordia Trust Excellence in German Award. Please share my thanks with the directors and members of your organization. When asked to choose a language to study at the end of the sixth grade, German, to me was the clear choice. My paternal ancestors emigrated from the Prussian region of Europe, thus the name ‘Gastfriend’ which is likely an Anglicized version of ‘Gastfreund’. I would also like to thank you for your support of the Immanuel German Language School.” Sincerely, Benjamin D. Gastfriend Certificate of Achievement Awards On May 12, the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) honored 126 students from 39 public, private and parochial schools throughout the greater Delaware Valley for their outstanding performance on this year’s AATG exam. The Concordia Trust partnered with the AATG by presenting $100 cash awards to the following deserving middle and high school students of German: Arun Balaji—Tredyffrin/Easttown Middle School Diana Oborna—Wissahickon High School Cecilia Padilla - Lionville Middle School Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Mit besten Grüßen, Arun Balaji “Thank you for the generous award! I feel really honored being one of the Concordia Trust award recipients. Having my efforts in German recognized is very motivating and encouraging as I continue to learn German. Hopefully, the next time I visit Europe, I’ll be able to make use of this knowledge and as I further my German studies, I’ll remember the great feeling of earning this award, so for that, danke schön! Diana Oborna “Thank you very much for giving me such a prestigious award in recognition of my efforts in studying the German language. The German language has been very important in my life and I am planning on continuing studying it and perhaps one day I can go to Germany to pursue an advanced degree in science or technology. It is also my goal to continue studying German in High School, get certified in German, and to participate in the German exchange program next year! Dankeschön! We attended the Winterfest with 28 people (strong). The student presence was exclusively senior high school. We left the club having received a taste of not only Bavarian culture and spirit, but we also received gestures of friendship and kindness through many wonderful activities geared to youth which will remain in our memories. I thank you for expressing interest in these young people who seek to learn German. The appropriateness of the activities and questions directed at them and the resulting rewards were positive and lend to creating excitement. Thank you for allowing us to take part in the German-American community. Together we bring up the next generation of German learners, enthusiasts, supporters and thinkers.
