Michelin launches
Power Days initiative
Tyre giant entices customers with cut-price trackdays
Michelin has launched a series of
customer trackdays. Customers
buying a set of tyres from the firm’s
Power range will be eligible to attend a
trackday hosted by former racer Terry
Rymer for just £49.
The so-called Michelin Power Days
will include 120 minutes of track time,
tyre technical workshops and trackday
tuition from Rymer. Riders will also
receive a photo and a limited edition
T-shirt and mug. Four venues secured
are: Knockhill, Brands Hatch, Oulton
Park and Mallory Park.
James Dimmock, marketing
manager for Michelin motorcycle tyres
in the UK, said: “It is an absolute priority
for us to help dealers bring in new
customers and increase revenues, and
we believe these days will do just that.”
Customers buying a set of Michelin
off-road tyres will be able to apply for
practice days run by the MX Nationals
team at Preston Docks, Foxhills,
Canada Heights and Hawkstone Park
for just £19. Groups will be split by
ability, and tyre and technical advice will
be available all day.
Paul Irwin, director of MX Nationals,
said: “We’re confident there will be a
lot of interest in these days – which
off-road rider wouldn’t want to test their
skills on courses like Canada Heights
and Hawkstone Park?”
Places are limited and will be
allocated on a first come, first served
basis, and proof of purchase will be
required at the point of booking. For

KTM UK’s new HQ and staff
Changes under way at Austrian brand’s British base
KTM Sportmotorcycle UK is to relocate its
headquarters to new premises at Silverstone’s
high-performance technology and motorsport
(HPT&M) business estate. The Austrianfounded company is currently busy fitting out
more than 13,000sqft of property at Silverstone
Park to include offices, brand rooms, a
conference suite, workshops, an internal
‘bike wash’ facility and a sales and marketing
centre to work with its 38 dealerships across
the UK. KTM’s new HQ will also be home to its
Husqvarna motorcycle brand when it completes
the move in April.
Matt Walker, KTM Sportmotorcycle UK’s
general manager, commented: “All 20-plus
employees will move with us and we are hugely
excited about how this is going to raise our
image and enable us to recruit and train more
people.
“The business proposition that it has created
at Silverstone Park made it the obvious choice.
Furthermore the designers we have used have
done an absolutely stunning job on the design of
our new headquarters premises. We can’t wait.”
KTM UK has also recently made two new
appointments: Paul Cross and Eugene Chartell
have joined the company. New area sales
manager for southern England, Wales, Ireland
and Northern Ireland, Cross, 41, is a well-known
face within the industry, having worked at
Kawasaki Motors UK and Yamaha Motor UK. He
can be contacted at [email protected].
Chartell, 36, has taken on the role of
workshop manager. He is an experienced
technician with a background in both two and
four-wheeled motorsport. He can be contacted

Kawasaki to ‘go direct’
in the south
KMUK announces plans to build ‘wholly owned’
dealership in the south
Kawasaki Motors UK has announced that
it is looking to establish a wholly owned
dealership in the south of England. Howard
Dale, general manager of Kawasaki Motors
UK, explained to existing dealers that
this move does not indicate the start of a
manufacturer-owned dealer network, but
one single site in a key trading area.
KMUK has lodged a planning application
for a 500sqm site, but the location is as yet
undisclosed. The dealership will employ
six people and will operate on the same
terms as any other Kawasaki dealer, the
company has stated.
Dale commented: “We will be
totally transparent in respects of the
business operation and its trading
accounts. The dealership will effectively
become an extension of the Kawasaki
Training Academy and we will be actively
encouraging DP’s and staff of other
Kawasaki dealerships to spend time in the
operation for training and development
purposes.
“Having a directly owned retail outlet will
also provide us with a platform to test new
concepts, ideas and systems, to ensure
that all futures initiatives are realistic,
effective and fully operational before
release.”
Wholly-owned dealership represents
a new dawn for Kawasaki UK

Freelancers
underpaid by
one-third
Business & finance news
The UK’s freelancers and
micro-businesses are paid
for only two-thirds (69 per
cent) of the work they should
be paid for, according to
smallbusiness.co.uk. Given
that the UK is home to 5.2m
micro-firms and 1.88m
freelancers, each business
may have missed out on
thousands of pounds in the
last year alone.
Of the 10m hours
recorded and tracked
by accounting software
company FreeAgent’s
customers in 2015, 80 per
cent were classed as ‘billable’
(ie chargeable to clients).
However, 31 per cent of this
time was not billed, meaning
the UK’s freelancers and
micro-business worked more
than a third of their working
hours for free.
SMEs to sidestep
tax hike
More than a quarter (28 per
cent) of SME owners are
planning to pay themselves
a special dividend ahead
of forthcoming tax hikes in
April, according to a survey of
owner-managed businesses.
Accountancy firm Moore
Stephens says that this
rush of dividend payments
is necessary for business
owners to avoid a sharp jump
in their personal tax bills
next year. For higher-rate
taxpayers, the tax rate on
dividends increases from 25
per cent to 32.5 per cent and
additional-rate taxpayers will
increase from 30.56 per cent
to 38.10 per cent, a dividend
tax hike of some seven per
cent for all middle and highrank earners.
Retail celebrates
strong January
Year-on-year estimates of the
quantity bought in the retail
industry showed growth for
the 33rd consecutive month
in January 2016, increasing by
5.2 per cent compared with
January 2015. The underlying
pattern in the data, as
suggested by the three-month
on three-month movement
in the quantity bought,
showed growth for the 26th
consecutive month, increasing
by 1.4 per cent.
Compared with December
2015, the quantity bought in
the retail industry is estimated
to have increased by 2.3 per
cent. Average store prices
(including petrol stations) fell
by 2.6 per cent in January
2016 compared with January
2015, the 19th consecutive
month of year-on-year price
falls. The amount spent in the
retail industry increased by
2.4 per cent in January 2016
compared with January 2015
and increased by 2.3 per cent
compared with December
2015. The value of online sales
increased by 10.4 per cent in
January 2016 compared with
January 2015 and increased
by 2.7 per cent compared with
December 2015.
BCC: ‘Business
rates reform
overdue’
At the Autumn Statement in
2015, the government outlined
plans to devolve significant
control over business rates to
local areas, which would see
local councils retain all the
revenue they collect in rates,
and gain new powers to vary
rates in some circumstances.
The British Chambers of
Commerce (BCC) is calling
for the government’s review
of business rates, due to
report at the next Budget, to
introduce a reformed system
with the following features: a
light-touch annual revaluation
regime, to stop businesses
being hit hard by an increase
every five years; the removal
of plant and machinery,
and micro-generation, from
the ratings system, which
discourages businesses from
investing in their premises;
the permanent abolition of
the annual uplift multiplier,
which doesn’t take into
account the performance
of businesses; and the
publication of a business
taxation review with forward
plans for implementing a new
regime with a reducing share
of business rates revenue as a
proportion of overall business
taxation.
The BCC’s Dr Adam
Marshall said: “The
government has yet to deliver
meaningful reform of the
business rates system, despite
repeated calls from business.
Ministers have focused too
much on devolving rates
powers, and too little on
addressing the deep-rooted
failings of an outdated and
poorly-designed system that
places a crippling financial
burden on many companies.”
FSB: ‘Government
must act to boost
wages’
The latest UK jobs numbers
show unemployment falling by
60,000 people to 1.69m in the
period October to December
2015, while average weekly
earnings rose by two per cent.
Commenting on the
numbers, Mike Cherry,
Federation of Small Business
(FSB) policy director, said:
“Unemployment is historically
low demonstrating the
ongoing strength of the UK
labour market. However, the
fact that average earnings
growth has slowed is a sign
that businesses are putting
off pay rises in the face
of a number of emerging

headwinds.
“Recent policy decisions have
resulted in a growing number of new
or unexpected costs for businesses,
including higher than expected
minimum wage increases, autoenrolment deadlines and changes
to how dividends are taxed. To meet
these challenges employers are
seeking ways to control costs and
this may be a cause of slower than
expected wage growth.
“We urge the Chancellor to
consider these challenges when
drawing up his Budget in March.
To boost productivity and raise
wages, smaller businesses need real
progress on business rates, a firm
commitment to simplification of the
tax system and crucial investment
in roads and broadband.”
Early adopters grow
faster
Small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs) that have
embraced digital technology show
faster growth than companies
that have not, according to a
study commissioned by SAP. The
research analysed data from 3,210
respondents in 11 countries who
work at a company with between 10
and 999 employees.
The study, conducted by IT
research firm IDC, indicates
strongly that SMEs around the
world understand and benefit from
the value of analytics, collaborative
and customer relationship
management (CRM) software to
help them run simple and compete
with larger enterprises.
More than 39 percent of SMEs
in all regions agree that “active
participation in the digital economy
will be essential to our company’s
survival in the next three to five
years.”
BCC: ‘Inflation to
remain low’
2016, up from 0.2 per cent rise in
the year to December 2015. The
main contributors to the small
rise were motor fuels, food, and
alcoholic beverages. This was partly
offset by falls in air fare prices.
Goods annual inflation in January
2016 was -1.5 per cent, while
services annual inflation was +2.3
per cent.
Commenting on the inflation
figures for January 2016, David
Kern, British Chambers of
Commerce (BCC) chief economist,
said: “While UK inflation continues
to edge up slowly, inflationary
pressures are likely to remain
muted for the foreseeable future.
Labour costs remain subdued, and
any upturn in oil prices will take
considerable time to be felt, given
recent sharp declines.
“Our forecast remains that
inflation will edge up to around one
per cent in the second half of this
year, and is likely to stay below the
two per cent target until well into
2017.”
The Consumer Price Index rose by
0.3 per cent in the year to January

Opinion: Sean Kerr
Cheap and not
so cheerful
Small-scale Chinese manufacturers offering cheap-as-chips
products may seem enticing, but they should be approached
with extreme caution, warns Sean Kerr
A
trip to any of Chongqing’s
top five motorcycle
factories will reveal stateof-the-art technology: robots
and laser welding, producing
top-quality products for the likes
of BMW, Yamaha and Piaggio
as well as their own brands. At
the other end of the spectrum,
things are somewhat different...
Some years ago, I visited
a motorcycle
manufacturer
that specialised
in export to
Kenya. Rather
than sitting
imperiously in
its own grounds,
this factory was
in a small back alley trading
estate in the Yang Jia Ping
district of Chongqing. The plant
had a single production line
around which about a dozen
men and women busily attached
various parts and fairings to the
frames in what seemed to be no
particular order. There were no
welders to be seen; everything
had been sourced pre-welded.
In companies like this,
there is no R&D, there are no
design departments, internal
or external. Quality control
amounts to riding a finished
motorcycle around the small
car park for five minutes before
passing it for export. These firms
are essentially middle-men:
they don’t design or produce
anything. They don’t even have
anything designed specifically
to order, no bespoke parts. If
you are lucky they will offer
you models with a selection of
different fairings and wheels.
Here’s the rub. For years,
these ‘manufacturers’ have
been making a good living
from importers on the African
continent, where many
importers forgo efficient
after-market services for
cheapness. This had been a
fact of motorcycling life in
Africa for decades, but now
exporting opportunities are
falling in number (mainly due
to the arrival of Bajaj, Hero and
TVS, etc). As a result, smaller
heard from importers and
dealers who started a business
relationship with such
companies only to find that they
have gone out of business or
changed completely as soon as
they hit on tough times. Some
such firms employ agencies
to compliance-test for them
- sometimes disastrous, as
unscrupulous agents fake the
COC.
For example,
CFMoto,
universally lauded
as China’s most
progressive
motorcycle
manufacturer,
exported
motorcycles with fuel tanks
that did not operate properly
to control emissions. About
1,400 vehicles were imported
into America without proper
emission control information
labels. The EPA ordered
CFMoto to recall and replace
all uncertified fuel tanks with
certified ones and imposed a
fine of $725,000. This was not
entirely the fault of CFMoto,
which had employed an agent to
deal with the certification.
So, if you are inexperienced
and looking to get into
the importing of Chinese
motorcycles, follow these
rules: visit the factory; check
the manufacturer is well
established; check it is able to
arrange COC; insist on receiving
copies of the COC before
importing, and show these to
the relevant agencies in your
country for verification. Most
important of all, don’t let the
thought of extra profit from
cheaper motorcycles cloud your
judgment… It'll end in tears. ■

manufacturers are looking for
other western markets.
What's the appeal?
The markets in Europe and
North America (and to a
smaller degree Australia and
New Zealand) are nowhere
near as big as traditional
Chinese motorcycle markets.
However, the profit made on
each motorcycle unit exported
to these regions is far greater.
This has caused many a small
manufacturer to cast his greedy
eye in that direction. Many of
these smaller concerns have
developed websites complete
with dubious factory photos.
These firms do not have the
power to test their models
for Euro 3 or 4, DOT or other
certificates of conformity. Many
inexperienced importers around
the world - tempted by the
cheap prices - are entering into
projects with such companies.
The problems with dealing
with motorcycle manufacturers
like these are manifold. I've

Brand update: Michelin
Michelin’s final
countdown to MotoGP
With MotoGP’s season-opening race just days away, the series’ new tyre provider
has been hard at work in collaboration with testers and the racers themselves
I
t was announced way back in
spring 2014 that Michelin would
become the official tyre supplier
to MotoGP from 2016, replacing
Bridgestone, which had provided
the premier category’s rubber since
2009. The moment has almost
arrived for the French manufacturer,
with the curtain-raising race
scheduled for 20th March in Qatar.
Michelin’s engineers are flat-out
in their final preparations, with
official tests scheduled in Sepang,
Losail, and Phillip Island.
“The test in Malaysia during the
first three days of February was
extremely important,” said Piero
Taramasso, the man in charge
of Michelin’s motorcycle racing
division. “Unlike the test in Valencia
back in November, when only a few
of the riders were running in 2016
configuration, this time everybody
[except Aprilia] was on the bike that
they will race this season. Not only
that, but they were all running with
the now compulsory electronic
software for engine and chassis
control. We are truly heading into the
final stage of preparations.”
During December and January,
team riders are prohibited from
testing, so Michelin’s work
proceeded with test riders. “We ran
at Jerez in December with Mike Di
Meglio, Michele Pirro and Hiroshi
Aoyama, the test-riders for Aprilia,
Ducati and Honda respectively,”
said Taramasso. “We also tested
at Sepang in January with Colin
Edwards on his Yamaha and Aoyama
on the Honda so we could continue
to work on the rubber compounds as
well as new tyre constructions. That
enabled us to determine which tyres
we would make available to the team
riders at Sepang this week.”
The test riders returned to
Sepang at the end of January.
Promising start
It was Jorge Lorenzo who posted
the fastest lap time of the opening
test of 2016 at Sepang, an early
indication that he is fully committed
to retaining his world championship
crown this year. On both hard and
soft-compound tyres, the Yamaha
rider proved nigh-on untouchable in
these pre-season tests.
“It was a promising start,”
Lorenzo acknowledged, “but we
have to keep our feet firmly on
the ground. The first grand prix
is still some time away, and our
competitors will undoubtedly
redouble their efforts and dig deep
to catch up.
“One thing is certain – our
engineers have worked hard over the
winter to successfully integrate the
new electronic software for engine
and chassis control that we must
now run.”
Of Michelin’s tyres, the Spaniard
commented: “The progress that
has been made with the front tyre is
extremely positive. Both in terms of
grip and feeling, Michelin has taken
an enormous step forward since the
Valencia test back in November. I’m
delighted, because these tyres suit
our bike and my riding style down to
the ground.”■

ARENACROSS
Entertaining the masses
The final gate fell on the 2016 Monster Energy Arenacross Tour, powered
by Ford Ranger, on Saturday 27th February, with news that the winter
series had had a physical reach, in terms of ‘bums on seats’, of over
70,000 over just seven weekends

aking an arena-filling
success of the 2016
Tour was always going
to be something of a tall order
for e22 Sports promoter and
former top pro motocross racer
Matt Bates. His ambitious plans
saw the series increase from
eight to 11 rounds over a period
of seven weekends. And, just
to spice it up a little, four of the
rounds at Glasgow, Belfast,
Birmingham and Newcastle
were gruelling double-headers.
The climax of the Tour at the
capital’s SSE Arena, Wembley,
saw an increase in attendance
of some 15 per cent with the
VIP hospitality suite bursting at
the seams as corporate guests
from the title sponsor Monster
Energy, supporting partners
Ford Ranger, TomTom and WD40 mingled with manufacturer
personnel from the main teams
of Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and
Husqvarna KTM Kawasaki.
Many punters too were happy to
spend the best part of £150 to
enjoy the last night of the series
in style.
Specialist press coverage
in print, on line and via social
media outlets kept the Tour
topical and in eyes of the
enthusiastic off-road fraternity
but opportunities for raising
awareness of the series.
Further, the series gained
attention from beyond the
specialist bike press. The
muscle-building and fitness
prowess of Bolddog Lings
Freestyle athlete Dan Whitby
was put to good use and gained
considerable exposure on
the massively popular Men’s
Health website – which has
2.4m unique browsers – and
also in Cycling Weekly, the Daily
Mirror, Motorcycle News and
a large number of high-end
regional newspapers. Television
and radio were also quick to
embrace the different and
exciting sporting event, taking
its spread to the masses.
Championship success,
across any discipline, is
naturally of the utmost
importance to manufacturers
and teams - it serves to
underline the capability and
reliability of their products
and adds a certain kudos to
the brand. Yet, to many in the
Arenacross audience, the
outcome of the main event
final wasn’t of paramount
importance and certainly didn’t
impact on their enjoyment of
the evening as a whole. They
were there to be entertained
and, on that front, Team Bates
delivered.
The setting in the
capital city, the foyer full of
merchandise stalls, scantilyclad Monster Energy girls,
TomTom giveaways, rider
meet/greet and autograph
sessions, bars and food outlets
primed the thousands of fans
for what lay ahead and once
the intro music struck and
the smoke machines fired up,
they were hooked. The pomp
of the opening ceremony, the
strobe lights, lasers, fireworks,
confetti and pyro fittingly went
up a notch at London, as did
the volume of the crowd. As the
commentators stirred them
into something of a frenzy,
they were happy to show their
appreciation of the performing
FMX athletes and Arenacross
racers.
Two of the championships,
namely the ProLites and
SuperMinis were decided at the
penultimate round at Sheffield
just two weeks before the end of
the series. Joe Clayton powered
his 250cc Husqvarna to no less
than 20 wins to emphatically
take the class crown. He then
earnt himself a ride in the Pro
class for the final two rounds
with the MVR-D Fuel Husqvarna
team run by Sussex-based
Chamberlain brothers Gareth
and Mark. Harry Kimber was a
worthy 85cc group winner.
There was an air of tense
anticipation on the night of

the final. It was widely known
that a Frenchman would win
the Pro class title but with just
three points separating first
and second, the question was
whether or not the Arenacross
new-recruit, Geartec Yamaha’s
Cedric Soubeyras or SR75
Molson Racing Suzuki’s
Thomas Ramette would be
the first two-time Arenacross
Pro Champion and could
Buildbase Honda’s Adam
Chatfield add a splash of red to
the championship podium. At
the other end of the machine
capacity scale, the young and
passionate 65cc racers were
on edge with just one point
separating the two leading KTM
pilots of Kiean Boughen and
Ollie Colmer.
The tension was high at the final round
Ooh, la la!
After a controversial 14-lap
moto, Ramette became
the first-ever back-to-back
Arenacross Pro champion,
while Geartec Yamaha’s Cedric
Soubeyras took the runnersup position in his inaugural
Arenacross. In a frantic scrap
off the start line, it was Britain’s
Matt Bayliss, Wooldridge
Demolition, who charged ahead
with Ramette and Soubeyras
in close succession. The
championship leaders soon
broke away but Chatfield wasn’t
about to give up; he dug deep
and stayed with them. This
was a plan that bore fruition for
the former AX champion, as,
when Soubeyras and Ramette
clashed on several occasions,
Chatfield was ready to pounce,
stay out of trouble and take
his much-deserved first win
of the 2016 series. Ramette
finished behind in second and
MVR-D Fuel Husqvarna’s Harri
Kullas third. Third in the Pro
championship was Ramette’s
team-mate Cyrille Coulon
which helped secure the Team
Championship for SR75 Molson
Racing Suzuki and Suzuki GB.
A high point at an otherwise
quiet time of year? Certainly.
A much-needed boost for the
motorcycle industry and offroad in particular? Definitely! ■

A view from the control tower
Matt Bates is very much a hands-on
promoter. He has in minute detail
carefully choreographed every one of the
Arenacross shows, working with a team of
specialists providing the bespoke sound,
lighting, vision and DJ’ing that sets
Arenacross apart from the rest. Nothing is
ever left to chance. His vast crew from the
production guys out on the track through
to the backroom staff are all kept in the
communication loop via radio, ready to
react and rally round when required.
What has always been of paramount
importance, though, to all involved is
that, no matter what goes on behind the
scenes, as far the public is concerned it’s
business as usual and the Show is on.
Summing up the 2016 series,
Bates said: “It’s been yet another
incredible tour for Arenacross and more
importantly, a fantastic promotion for
bikes in general. Equally the hard work
and dedication from the team here at e22
Sports is something that I believe the
industry can benefit from in a way that
shouldn’t be missed. Facts tell us that
of the 70,000 fans we attract during our
eight-week tour, over 50 per cent of them
are interested in bikes but don’t own
one – this has to be a young, vibrant new
audience that the industry needs to be
tapping into.”

Feature: Advertising options
WHAT
ADVERTISING
WORKS
Given today’s endless advertising options – print,
broadcast, websites, social media, et al – choosing the
best types for your business isn’t easy. Trader speaks to
some successful firms to find out what’s proved most
effective for them
BEST?
W
hen it comes
to advertising,
the sky’s your
limit. In fact, if
you’ve enough
budget, you could look beyond
the sky, as Red Bull did with its
Stratos space jump. The point
is, advertising options have
never offered as wide a scope
or variety as they do today,
with more and more styles
and methods forever being
introduced.
It’s a far cry from the
marketing scene a few decades
ago where the options were
much simpler, with the core
focuses being on either print
or broadcast media. That was
before the internet came along
and turned everything on its
head, offering companies
opportunities to reach
out to their customers in
ways so dynamic they were
unimaginable.

Feature: Advertising options
Owing to the level of
access, affordability and
the immediacy of online
promotions, print media has
really been challenged, but
that’s not to say the latter’s
dead in the water – far from
it. If you look inside any
magazine, you’ll find plenty of
adverts, placed by everyone
from the biggest of bike
manufacturers to the smallest
of consumable businesses.
No one forces such people to
advertise in magazines, yet
they continue they continue
to do so.
The boss of VE UK Norrie
Kerr believes print media
has retained a unique value.
“I really like print media and
value it highly,” he told us.
“When people buy a magazine
they’re making a committed
purchase. They’re interested
in that product and what’s
inside of it.
“As a wholesaler, I value
that commitment much more
than those who scan over
something that just happens
to pop up in front of them
online. They might have just
clicked on the wrong tab and
have no actual interest in the
article in front of them, or the
products advertised around
it, but I don’t believe that to be
the case with print media.”
A long-time print
advertiser, Kerr admitted to
having tried digital promotions
in the past, but he now
prefers to place advertising
in magazines. “There’s much
more longevity to a print
advert which probably gets
seen several times by the guy
who bought the mag in the
first place, and then several
more times by the mates it
gets passed around.
“In my opinion, the shelflife is far more substantial for
an advert in a mag, which can
be put down and picked up
an infinite amount of times.
There’s no searching around
to try and find that same offer
again, as you’d have to do with
a digital advert. It’s maybe
a little irrelevant, but there’s
also a real pride in seeing your
brand in print. The two-wheel
industry is relatively closeknit, so it’s a sign of status
to the market, as well as an
opportunity to hook new
dealers and customers.”
Hitting targets
Kerr acknowledged the
significance of targeted
advertising: “Of course, you
need to get your adverts in the
right magazines. Thankfully
for us, the scooter market only
has a couple of premium titles
for us to promote in, within
which we feel as though we
are a part of the community.
“We could stop
advertising, but that would be
counterproductive. As CocaCola and the bigger global
brands understand, it’s all
about being seen regularly, so
that when someone decides
it’s time to change their
exhaust they come direct to
you. You’ve got to think longterm.
“The other big advantage
to being in magazines is
being invited to display
new products or have your
products tested. You can’t
buy that kind of credibility,
which goes on to massively
steer readers into buying your
products.”
Kerr has no intention of
pulling out of print advertising
any time soon. “There was a
time when I thought print had
come and gone. Digital was
everywhere and I felt obliged
to look into it, but online
promotions didn’t bring the
gains we expected them too,
whereas print still keeps doing
what we hope it will.
“Maybe that’s owing to the
dynamic of our company, but
all the time we’re succeeding
with traditional advertising
we won’t be looking to change
things”.
Someone who shares a
similar point of view to Kerr’s
is Rock Oil’s Russell Bower.
On behalf of the UK oil and
lubricant giant, he places
adverts in many different
magazines across a plethora
VE’s Norrie Kerr still prefers print
advertising over digital
“The other big advantage
of print is being invited to
have products featured
and tested”
of genres. “We do digital
advertising, but we’re more
focused on print media,” said
Bower. “The industry we work
in is a mature one and I think
people still enjoy getting a
physical product in front of
them to read through in their
own time. That’s the message
we’ve had from specific
market analysis into the best
means of attaining business
from the trade, and it works
for us.
“We promote to general
customers in the same
format, getting our name
seen as much as possible
in consumer magazines,
carefully targeting specific oil
products to the readerships
in question. But that’s not to
say we don’t also promote
ourselves digitally, too.”
Russell cited Trials and
Motocross News (TMX) as a
prime example of how Rock
Oil blends print and digital
advertising. “We advertise
within the title but also on its

Quality products warrant
quality marketing
Making a logo count relies on
getting it seen by the target market
online forum and site. Younger
customers of ours are easier
to access this way, possibly
because they don’t buy as
many magazines as their
seniors, but also because
they’re more likely to be
viewing things online.
“It’s a fine balance that
we work hard on to master.
In truth, advertising can be
a bit of a minefield, but we’re
certain that if we were stop
placing adverts in magazines,
or exhibiting at shows for that
matter, it would likely have
a negative impact on us. We
wouldn’t want to risk cutting
back when there’s no need to
do so. Print isn’t dead, just the
same as digital isn’t irrelevant.
The two options complement
each other.”
Shifting with the times
Taking a completely different
perspective, Held UK’s CEO
Guy Mainwaring said: “When
Breaking down effectiveness
of ad forms is a tricky business
we first started the business,
I didn’t have the money to
advertise. I’m a big fan of
print media and I still look
forward to magazines and
daily papers coming through
my letterbox, but I think my
love for print isn’t shared so
enthusiastically by everyone.
“If I’d had the cash to
splash when Held UK was
being established, I’d have
spent as much as my budget
would have allowed. In
my earlier years, that had
always been the way to get a
message out to customers,
whereas the internet seemed
unproven and questionable.
As it happened, my initial lack
of money forced me to look
at different means to market
my business, with the internet
proving that affordable
solution.”
Mainwaring explained
that he is able to afford to
target customers digitally for
a fraction of the cost of print
advertising. “A full page in
any bike magazine is going to
set you back at least £500,
if not closer to a grand. It’s
a lot of money, especially so
considering the relatively
small reach that it is likely to
achieve.
“I’ve been around the
block enough to have seen
the demise of magazine
circulation figures. They’re not
a fraction of what they used to
be, but the advertising costs
have remained as strong as
they’ve always been. It feels
like you’re getting less for the
same, if not more, money.
“Anyone in business knows
you have to look for the best
solutions to your problems
and that’s why I’ve always
chosen to steer clear of pricey
print adverts, unless there’s
a very specific feature on
clothing or products from our
range.”

VE’s scooter parts are
advertised widely in print
Mainwaring’s Held UK
website recently hosted a
giveaway of four one-piece
replica onesies. “It was
a simple and quirky way
to reach a lot of potential
customers. All people had
to do was ‘like’ the suit on
a social media site to be in
with a chance of winning
it. Before we knew it, we’d
achieved over 100,000 ‘likes’
for the products, which had
cost me around £140 for all
four giveaways, including the
postage costs.
“I’d have been lucky to
get a quarter-page in a mag
for that cost, which would
probably have been seen by
a fraction of the audience
achieved online. I hate to say
it, but examples like this make
you realise how dead in the
water traditional advertising
is. That’s why everyone’s
putting a greater emphasis on
digital marketing.
“It’s not all about the
numbers, though. There are
so many different types of
digital advertising, meaning
you can make your promotion
as dynamic as you want.
We’re set to release a series
of video promotions for our
kit, which is really exciting. It’s
anything other than flat and
boring. Campaigns can last

Despite his taste for
digital marketing, Mainwaring
admitted that Held customers

Mainwaring’s concluding
words emphasise the
essence of effective
advertising: engaging with
your target customers. Some
industries are better suited
to digital marketing, some
prefer the more traditional
methods. When all’s said
and done, it’s not about
your personal preference
of print or digital, but about
choosing the one that will
achieve the best results for
your business. That could
mean focusing specifically
on one form of advertising
or blending a mix of forms
– as seems to be the most
common practice in today’s
multi-media world. ■

The first promotion, a race for

of the new supply-line being

The ultra-keen Youth 65

was provided for them to race
the innovative Cross 14kW

E-bike, moped or bike:
what’s the difference?
As the popularity of electric bikes continues to grow, the

classification and legality, as Stevie Muir explains

s more and more
dealers look to
diversify, we at the
MCIA are getting quite a
few enquiries about the
regulations for selling
electric bicycles. Though the
MCIA doesn’t represent the
electric bicycle industry at
all, we do have to understand
the rules surrounding their
classification.
This comes
under the
remit of the
Association’s
project manager
for alternative
powered
vehicles, Dave
Luscombe.
Dave tells me that the
question he is asked most
often is, at what point does
an electric bicycle become a
moped or motorcycle? The
answer is straightforward:
as soon as it is capable of
producing more than 250w.
Judging from some of the
questions regarding electric
bicycles and ‘speed pedelecs’,
some people wrongly assume
that bikes that can be
propelled by pedal power are
exempt from rules relating to
power output. It’s true that
the licensing framework was
not developed to encompass
high-powered electric bikes,
but it does apply to them
now.
An electric bicycle is a
machine producing 250w
or less. It can be ridden
on a public road or cycle
path or anywhere you can
legally ride a regular bicycle.
No helmet is required, no
tax, insurance, licence
or certificate of roadworthiness: the same rules
as for a push bike, except
that the rider must be
over 14. If it is over 250w,
however, it’s a completely
different matter.
When intended for road
use, an electric bicycle or
speed pedelec over 250w and
not over 4Kw is classified as a
dealers to understand how to
sell such bikes intended for
off-road use. “Essentially it’s
a motocross machine and so
is liable to the same rules…
The machine needs to be
CE marked or on the FIM
competition list.”
The same access
restrictions apply too. It
makes no difference if you
can flick a switch
back to 250w: the
bike is classified
by its maximum
power. You can
of course use any
vehicle you like on
purely private land,
but that applies to
so few people that it’s barely
relevant.
Electric bikes offer
tremendous fun and are
likely to win new converts
to motorcycling. At the
moment, though, they are
not outside of any current
laws, nor do they have special
laws of their own. It might
make sense to relax the rules
around mopeds, as some
other EU countries do, but
that's another discussion
for another day. What’s
important to remember is
that anyone selling a bike
over 250w and not making
it absolutely clear to the
customer that they have
bought a moped/motocross
bike is mis-selling. Having
pedals does not give any
special rights or dispensation
if the bicycle is over 250w.
Anyone with specific
enquiries should contact

moped (L1e-A or L1e-B), and
so much comply with moped
rules (including the 28mph
speed limiter). A license or
CBT is essential, a helmet
must be worn, L-plates, etc.
In a nutshell, an e-bike over
250w is a moped and needs to
be registered as such.
If the bike produces more
than 4Kw or is capable of
more than 28mph, then it is a
motorcycle and must comply
with the rules which apply
to motorcycles of a similar
output.
Because electric bicycles
are not currently typeapproved, single vehicle
type-approval is needed,
and an insurer willing to sell
a policy needs to be found.
To comply with the law, all
these requirements must be
met and the seller must make
them very clear to the buyer.
Many machines over 250w
are being sold for ‘off-road
use only’. Dave Luscombe
has identified an easy way for

World market: China
Domestic troubles,
global impacts
With sales falling and urban bike bans continuing to impede progress,
big trouble in China’s industry could represent at least a little strife
elsewhere, as Sean Kerr explains
M
any issues have surfaced
recently concerning
the Chinese domestic
motorcycle markets, and it
has left some wondering what
effect, if any, it will have on the
international bike markets.
There is no established secondhand car market in China, with
a notable absence of used cars
lots. Second-hand cars seem to
be mostly traded through private
sales. So it’s not as though cheap
cars are replacing motorcycles,
yet motorcycle sales within China
are falling.
It may seem surprising that
the majority of big Chinese cities
have banned the use
of internal combustion
engine bikes within the
urban areas, and indeed
this prohibition is a
contributing factor to
the decline of domestic
bike trade. CAAM
(Chinese Association
of Automobile
Manufacturers) has
made requests to the
government for the motorcycle
ban to be lifted, in light of falling
output and sales.
Motorcycles are not substituted
by cars, but by electric bikes and
mopeds. The industry difficulties
are affecting senior motorcycle
manufacturers all over China.”
Motorcycle exports have
suffered, and according to the
latest data sales remained low
throughout last year. Output and
sales registered less than two
million units each month. Many
producers are worried and aren’t
sure what the future holds. Li
Bin, secretary general of CAAM
Motorcycle Chapter, told me that
it’s “the worst time ever for the
Chinese motorcycle industry.
China is executing the world’s
bicycle lanes it tends to be a bit
precarious on the road, especially
when taxis are going somewhere
in a hurry… on an electric scooter,
you don’t have the power to pull
away from trouble. I can only see
the accident figures increasing
under the current policy, and I
would certainly get back on a gas
motorcycle given the chance.”
Knock-on effects abroad
It may be difficult to see the
correlation between the domestic
and international markets but
they are linked and affect each
other. It’s all to do with the
supply chain. China’s biggest
producer is Haojue. On
the international stage,
Haojue aren’t well known
because their main focus
is on domestic sales. If
their sales drop, then they
produce less, which in
turn means they buy less
raw materials – and the
subsequent fall in demand
raises prices and affects
everyone. And when the
big exporters are hit, it provides a
chance for India to take a piece of
the cake.
India has no such restrictions
on urban motorcycle riding, and
so its motorcycle market forces
are gaining strength. India has
been able to enter into direct
competition with China on many
markets. At a recent meeting
of the Chongqing Motorcycle
Council, Chinese motorcycle
historian Guo Changjun stated: “If
the Chinese government doesn’t
review its policy on motorcycle
riding in cities and towns, our rank
in the world could fall behind India
within five years.”■
“China is executing the
world’s strictest standards for
motorcycle production: bikes
are banned in 190 Chinese
cities and towns, greatly
affecting sales”
Bans biting hard
Despite supplying half the
world’s motorcycles, China’s
companies are facing tough times
at home. Output has taken a hit
and CAAM claims that another
problem, on top of the slump in
domestic demand, is that of poor
management by company bosses.
Dong Yang, a member of CAAM,
commented: “The motorcycle
sales decline is not caused by
consumption substitution, but
by management problems.
strictest standards for motorcycle
production, even stricter than
those in Europe. What’s more
important is that more than 190
Chinese cities and towns ban the
use of motorcycles, and this has
greatly affected sales.”
With over 200m electric bikes
and scooters in use in China and
their popularity growing, they
are a direct challenge to petrol
engine motorcycles. Needing no
licence, and exempt from urban
bans, electric bikes make sense
for many people. Scooter rider Lui
Huang said: “Although my electric
scooter is usable in Beijing, I do
notice that if I do not stick to the

Business Journal
Would you credit it?
Offering consumer credit can be an effective way to increase income,
but there are myriad legislative hurdles and potential pitfalls, as
Adam Bernstein explains
T
he growth in
consumer credit as a
marketing tool is quite
remarkable; figures reported
by the Telegraph in June 2015
noted that consumer credit
approvals were 7.6 per cent
up on the previous year. A
number of reasons are cited in
the report: squeezed incomes,
but also low interest rates.
Borrowing £5,000 in 2013
cost seven per cent, but the
same amount can now be
borrowed for 3.3 per cent.
Sportsbikeshop.co.uk lists a
Duchinni D101 for £39.99 and
an Arai RX-7V RC that costs
£2,499.99. Credit, as any
retailer knows, is a great way
of selling big-ticket items.
What is credit?
Section nine of the Consumer
Credit Act 1974 defines credit
as being “a cash loan, and
any other form of financial
accommodation”. In simple
terms, this means that a
business involved with finance
for goods, to be repaid in
instalments, or simple loan
advances, will be subject to,
and regulated by, the Act. The
government website expands
on this and states that the
rules cover firms selling
goods or services on credit
(including hire purchase);
hiring or leasing out goods
for more than three months;
lending money; issuing credit
cards; arranging credit for
other people; collecting or
purchasing consumer credit
debts; and helping people with
debt problems or advising on
people’s credit standing.
Interestingly, some
business-to-business
transactions are caught too.
The government says credit
can only be given to sole
traders, partnerships with
fewer than four partners and
unincorporated associations
by regulated firms.
Heather KorwinSzymanowska, a dispute
resolution solicitor and
associate with Stephensons,
is clear on the need to comply
with the law.
“Any business thinking of
offering credit to consumers
must first have authorisation
to do so.” She explains that,
up until April 2014, consumer
credit licences were granted
by the Office of Fair Trading
(OFT). However, the OFT
closed in April 2014 and
handed over its regulatory
powers and responsibilities
under the Act to the Financial
Conduct Authority (FCA).
The cost of a licence isn’t
horrendous, starting at £135
per year and depends on
turnover and type of licence.
More detail can be seen on
the FCA website at http://
tinyurl.com/nc5gqeh. The
FCA has a range of powers
and can make legally binding
rules for those registered
with the body. Its handbook
(http://tinyurl.com/nanjty8)
sets out an extensive list of
legally binding principles that
applicants must adhere to in
order to secure (and keep)
their licence to offer consumer
credit. Organisations are
expected to comply at all
times.
“One of the key
requirements set out by the
FCA is for businesses to
treat their customers fairly,”
says Korwin-Szymanowska.
She adds: “When assessing
applications, the FCA will
review a number of different
factors that highlight how a
Sanctions, regulation and enforcement
Non-compliance with the Consumer
Credit Act can lead to a fine, payment of
compensation to a consumer, the revocation
of a consumer credit licence or criminal
prosecution. Further, the FCA can impose
sanctions and penalties on any organisation
posing significant risks to consumers.
While the FCA has powers over regulated
businesses, it can deal with unregulated
businesses too. Firms that operate outside
of the law can be prosecuted, closed down,
and their assets frozen. The same applies to
the individuals operating the firms. Those
firms that break FCA rules – as opposed to
the law - can have restrictions placed on
them, be fined, ordered to pay redress, and
can have their authorisation taken away.
The FCA also carries out regular
assessments, dependent on the size of
the firm and the risk level. This is usually
once every four years, but can be more
regular, and often takes the form of a
face-to-face interview or a telephone
interview. Investigations may follow if a risk
is identified.
As well as acting on complaints it
receives from consumers, the FCA also
requires firms to keep and submit regular
records of any complaints they receive
directly. It also receives information
from data analysis, ‘mystery shops’ and
whistle-blowers to identify any breach of
FCA principles.
Organisations that carry out
unauthorised (credit) business risks falling
foul of section 19 of the Financial Services
and Markets Act 2000, carrying a prison
sentence of two years, a fine, or both.
40 March 2015

firm puts the fair treatment of
customers at the heart of its
business.”
Credit criteria
Factors include the business
plan; interactions with
customers; the judging
of eligibility criteria; the
relationship management;
regime compliance; and
the systems, controls and
organisational structure.
Korwin-Szymanowska
explains that the FCA applies
a ‘fitness and proprietary
test’ when assessing whether
a business, and the people
running the business, are
to be granted authorisation.
“In essence, this looks at
the honesty, integrity and
reputation of an organisation,
its competence, capability
and financial soundness. The
FCA will also consider the
activities of the business as a
whole. The test is a rigorous
one, and if you are applying
for authorisation, you will
need to be able to provide
evidence.”
In conclusion
Those wanting to offer credit
would do well to spend time
on the FCA website, reckons
Korwin-Szymanowska, as it
provides information on how
to apply, and the fees involved.
By extension, firms should
consult FCA guidance or a
solicitor to find out exactly
what type of authorisation
“Borrowing £5,000
three years ago cost
seven per cent, but now
costs just 3.3 per cent —
credit is very attractive
to customers”
they require, and how to get it.
Given the serious penalties
in place for ignoring the law, it
is important that any business
considering offering consumer
credit to their customers
is well informed and takes
a thorough approach to
meeting FCA guidance and
the Consumer Credit Act. For
the uninitiated, this can be a
daunting task. ■
Making Tax Digital –
whether you like it or not
HMRC is transforming tax returns as it rolls out Making Tax Digital.
But do we really want our returns fully digitised without prior
consultation? Jason Piper investigates
D
o you fancy having to
buy new a new phone
or computer, and learn
how to use new software, just
for HMRC’s benefit? Would
you volunteer to prepare your
accounts four times a year
instead of just once, and then
have to do a tax return on top?
Do you trust an HMRC
computer to get your
business’s taxes right without
you having to check them?
HMRC’s latest initiative,
Making Tax Digital (MTD),
could involve all of the above
becoming a reality for every
small business so it’s vital they
speak to policy-makers before
the summer is out.
As anyone who runs a
business will have noticed,
technology is changing
the way that you have to
deal with the authorities.
There’s VAT and, if you’re
incorporated, corporation
tax returns, and the vast
majority of self-assessment
income tax returns are filed
online these days too. Off the
back of the broadly positive
experience of implementing
RTI for employers with
PAYE obligations, HMRC
and the government have
now announced that they
want to go a step further by
requiring, as well as records
of employment-related
taxes, regular updates on tax
information for every business
in the country.
Time is short
Compulsory online everything
for everyone is the basis of
HMRC’s new Making Tax
Digital proposal. It started life
in March 2015 as “making tax
easier” but by December the
detail had stared to emerge
and the name had changed.
HMRC and the minister David
Gauke are keen to stress
that they’ll be consulting
“in detail” throughout 2016,
but the timetable is fixed,
and many would say too
ambitious.
The first businesses
affected will be reporting
all their tax information to
HMRC online, quarterly, in
real time from 2018. That
means the legislation will
have to be in the 2017 Budget,
so it’ll need to have been
written by the end of 2016 –
realistically, well under way
by late summer this year.
We don’t know yet how
March 2015 41
p040042_Bus Jour_dB.indd 41
29/02/2016 15:02
Business Journal
HMRC will be managing
the rollout, but it sounds as
though it’ll be based purely
on size, not sector. Even if
you already keep your records
online and up to date, there’s
still going to be an additional
step. HMRC wants you to
send it details, probably more
or less in line with what you
do for VAT (assuming you’re
registered), of your headline
financial information so
that you can be kept up to
date with your evolving tax
liability.
Supposed light touch
You may think that sounds
great, or you may think it
sound like a nightmare. The
aim is for the reporting to be
‘light touch’ – because every
business in the country is
expected to keep its records
using apps, so that just a
single touch of a button will
send HMRC what it wants
from your records. The reality
may be quite different.
You will need to start using
HMRC-approved software
for your records. We don’t
yet know exactly what that
software is going to look like,
but we do know it won’t be
just an Excel spreadsheet.
Somehow, you’ll need to get
your figures into a format that
HMRC will accept.
HMRC seems to be taking
the line that since employers
were able to cope with RTI,
often by asking agents to file
for them, small businesses
will be able to cope. But the
ask is very different this time
around. HMRC likes to quote
proportions and percentages
to show how MTD would be
good for the majority, but
there are 490,000 small and
micro businesses that, by
choice, don’t communicate
with government online now.
There’s another 300,000 who
“can’t but would” – and a
further 1.9m who are going to
struggle.
And what about the
“light touch interaction”?
The Cabinet Office recently
“HMRC wants to fully
digitise your tax returns
- an ambitious plan - and
the timetable is fixed.
Time is short; make your
concerns known now”
assessed various parts of
government’s online presence
of how easy people will find
it to use, on a scale from one
(never have, never will) to
nine (expert). HMRC’s selfassessment offerings come out
one notch below the highest,
scoring an eight confident
user requirement – and yet,
the MTD target audience are
mostly languishing at five
(learning the ropes) or below.
Destined to fail?
None of this means that
MTD is destined to fail. But
of course there is a risk that
it could – potentially, with
businesses taking the blame
for a flawed system. And
remember, it’s not just HMRC
involved in implementing
this. It’s got to come from
parliament, and MPs have
already debated it once. The
take-away here is that it
may be worth writing to or
emailing your MP. If you can’t
find a template online, contact
your local trade body or ask
your accountant about it.
Think carefully about
what would work for you, and
what might even add value
to your business – planning,
cash-flow, even just basic
recordkeeping – and if it’s
best done online, then tell
HMRC and your MP how that
would work. If it wouldn’t
work for you, tell them, now –
because you won’t get another
chance. You can find contact
details for your MP at http://
www.theyworkforyou.com/
mps/. Keep an eye on https://
www.gov.uk/government/
publications/making-taxdigital for updates.

Clements Moto have carefully selected
brands in non-conflicting market
sectors, which allows us to serve dealers
with singular or multiple product lines.
At the market entry level we have the
long established Chinese scooter brand,
Baotian. In addition we offer lightweight
geared commuter bikes from Zontes,
which have been acclaimed by the press
and dealers alike. Complimenting
both, we have recently introduced our
own house brand, Motorini. Operating
in a different market sector, we are
proud to represent Fantic Motor. The
iconic Italian manufacturer produces
a high quality range of Super Moto and
Enduro machines. Quadro vehicles from
Switzerland introduce another twist in
our niche mix, with a range of innovative
3 and 4 wheeled scooters, which
offer true diversity in any dealership.
Dealers are supported by a responsive
head office team and regional sales
managers. We are always happy to hear
from interested dealers.

Continental continue to be at
the forefront of motorcycle tyre
development in order to meet the
changing demands of both riders and
machines, and 2016 is no exception.
The innovative new ContiSportAttack 3
is our most advanced hypersport tyre
to date, featuring the unique Grip Limit
Feedback Technology, and excellent
durability, to offer sportsbike riders
amazing performance and tyre life in
all conditions. This will be the choice
of California Superbike School in the
UK for 2016.
We offer a market leading range
of adventure sport tyres, from the
road-biased ContiTrailAttack 2 to the
ever popular big block TKC 80. For
those who want something in between,
the TKC 70 has been a big hit since its
introduction last year, giving great
performance both on and off-road,
without compromising on mileage.
The ContiRoadAttack 2 EVO range has
also been expanded to include to new
GT specification tyres, aimed at the
likes of the FJR1300, giving riders of
heavy tourers excellent performance
on wet and dry roads, with precise and
neutral handling.
The ever popular ContiMotion range
continues to be a big seller, and will
include 2 new sizes in 2016, offering a
premium quality sport touring radial
for an even lower price than in 2015.
This year we have also continued to see
a growth in the custom segment, with
the ContiMilestone selected by Moto
Guzzi as the OE fitment on the new V9
Bobber, and the ContiGo! also proving
very popular.
For racers, we will also see the
introduction of the brand new
ContiTrack racing slick, available in six
sizes, and a variety of compounds. This
will further complement our range of
classic and road legal race tyres, which
have been a big hit in the paddock.
Cambrian Tyres are continuing to
invest in online and print advertising
in 2016, to help further increase brand
awareness amongst riders in the UK,
as more and more people discover the
benefits of switching to Continental.
With market leading technologies,
competitive pricing, and a recognised
& trusted brand name the demand for
Continental is growing.

Jon Pullara commenced trading in 2003
identifying a niche market for custom
parts for the Vmax motorcycle. We
formed vmaxbitz.com Ltd in 2005, by
which time the business had focussed on
supplying speedometers and gauges and
became the authorised UK distributor
for Koso. We hold all their MPH range and
accessories in stock, with access to all
models via the European subsidiary.
We have subsequently been appointed
the UK distributor for the Japanese
brand Daytona and, again we are
mainstreaming its range of gauges and
motorcycle accessories.
We are dealers for Smiths digitally
re-mastered gauges and market our own
Swift brand of classic gauges.
Our range also includes products from
Motogadget and the GPT range of GPS
Speedometers.
During 2011 we became an introducing
agent for the trade supplier Paaschburg
& Wunderlich, supplying trade
customers with some of its many
catalogue parts, from our offices in the
UK, at the same price as from Germany.

We are specialists...........
Bestselling aftermarket motorcycle
accessories offering practical solutions
for the everyday protection problems
of both motorcycle and rider. And in
addition to that – our quality design,
materials and manufacturing are both
expected and appreciated. Pyramid
strive to achieve these goals. We
observe market trends closely, aiming
to offer innovative products that reflect
current trends. After all we operate in
a fashion market. Customers want to
express their individuality – that’s one
of the reasons they became bikers in the
first place.
We call our warehouse the ‘beating
heart’ of our business. If there’s one
thing we’ve learnt in the last 30 years,
it’s that stock sells!
Our main responsibility is to provide
you, our customer, with first class
service – without delay.

Opinion: Mark Williams
Notes from
the underground
Having grown old enough to qualify for free public
transport, Mark Williams has found yet another excuse
for delaying his purchase of a city-going motorcycle
End User
markswill.wordpress.com
R
Mark Williams
has been writing
about bikes
for over 45
years. He was
the founding
editor of Bike
magazine.
ecent columns have
found me considering,
but inevitably not
actually, buying a brand
new motorbicycle. Which
at the start of last autumn I
had every intention of doing
because then I had a bit of
money saved. Having not
owned one for a few years, I
felt it was time to get myself
a city runabout
again. And,
as my reader
may recall, I
pondered long
and quite hard
as to what I
should buy, the
upshot of which
was that it should be a) brand
new, and b) a scooter.
But here we are in
mid-February and I still
haven’t whacked my money
down and got astride a
nice new Yamaha Vity or
an even cheaper Lexmoto
Dart, but is this merely
a case of chickening out
or a consequence of the
consummate wisdom for
which I am legendary? Well,
before you jump to the most
obvious conclusion, consider
this:
I spend somewhere
between a third and a half of
my time working in London,
which should explain the
scooter option, but since
the middle of November
last year, it’s rained on
almost all of my London
days. Even on a bike with
a bit of weather protection,
riding round the pot-holed,
badly-drained roads of our
capital city would have been,
well, not much fun. Through
my old codger’s rose-tinted
spectacles, fun is what bikery
should be.
Note the ‘old codger’
reference, because that’s also
become a bit if an issue – but
not, I hasten to point out,
in the sense of getting too
old and possibly too infirm
to bestride a bike. No, the
thing of it is that I’ve now got
sorely depleted by the pesky
business of trying to complete
the ‘street-tracker’ I began
trying to fashion out of an
ancient Honda CB400N the
previous winter.
It is of course axiomatic
that this project bike will take
far longer and cost far more
than one anticipates. Indeed,
this little devil has, at the
time of writing,
exactly doubled
in time taken and
spons expended,
with little sign of
it ending there.
Added to
which, thanks
to an eagle-eyed
journo friend in America
and shipping specialists
DK Motorcycles, I ended up
importing a near immaculate,
1984 Honda VT500 Ascot
whose street-tracker styling
was the inspiration for the
pig’s ear I’m trying to turn
into a silk purse. Buying the
original is probably what I
should’ve done at the outset.
I couldn’t even leave the
Ascot alone, though, electing
to replace the unattractive
square headlamp, instrument
panel and shielding with
items that suit it better

My wallet has been left
woefully depleted and my
ambitions for a new machine
pretty much stymied, which
is maybe just as well, for the
only scooter dealer within a
bus ride’s distance has just
closed down – another nail in
the coffin of my two-wheeled
urban mobility dream. ■

Fun vs funds
But yes, when this foul,
climatically-changed winter
is finally behind us, the

it, sunnier, a zippy little

not the end of my dilemma
because since the winter

Opinion: Mark Williams
Notes from
the underground
Having grown old enough to qualify for free public
transport, Mark Williams has found yet another excuse
for delaying his purchase of a city-going motorcycle

ecent columns have
found me considering,
but inevitably not
actually, buying a brand
new motorbicycle. Which
at the start of last autumn I
had every intention of doing
because then I had a bit of
money saved. Having not
owned one for a few years, I
felt it was time to get myself
a city runabout
again. And,
as my reader
may recall, I
pondered long
and quite hard
as to what I
should buy, the
upshot of which
was that it should be a) brand
new, and b) a scooter.
But here we are in
mid-February and I still
haven’t whacked my money
down and got astride a
nice new Yamaha Vity or
an even cheaper Lexmoto
Dart, but is this merely
a case of chickening out
or a consequence of the
consummate wisdom for
which I am legendary? Well,
before you jump to the most
obvious conclusion, consider
this:
I spend somewhere
between a third and a half of
my time working in London,
which should explain the
scooter option, but since
the middle of November
last year, it’s rained on
almost all of my London
days. Even on a bike with
a bit of weather protection,
riding round the pot-holed,
badly-drained roads of our
capital city would have been,
well, not much fun. Through
my old codger’s rose-tinted
spectacles, fun is what bikery
should be.
Note the ‘old codger’
reference, because that’s also
become a bit if an issue – but
not, I hasten to point out,
in the sense of getting too
old and possibly too infirm
to bestride a bike. No, the
thing of it is that I’ve now got
sorely depleted by the pesky
business of trying to complete
the ‘street-tracker’ I began
trying to fashion out of an
ancient Honda CB400N the
previous winter.
It is of course axiomatic
that this project bike will take
far longer and cost far more
than one anticipates. Indeed,
this little devil has, at the
time of writing,
exactly doubled
in time taken and
spons expended,
with little sign of
it ending there.
Added to
which, thanks
to an eagle-eyed
journo friend in America
and shipping specialists
DK Motorcycles, I ended up
importing a near immaculate,
1984 Honda VT500 Ascot
whose street-tracker styling
was the inspiration for the
pig’s ear I’m trying to turn
into a silk purse. Buying the
original is probably what I
should’ve done at the outset.
I couldn’t even leave the
Ascot alone, though, electing
to replace the unattractive
square headlamp, instrument
panel and shielding with
items that suit it better
aesthetically but which
had to be custom- and thus
expensively-made for it. D’uh.
My wallet has been left
woefully depleted and my
ambitions for a new machine
pretty much stymied, which
is maybe just as well, for the
only scooter dealer within a

the coffin of my two-wheeled
