Winter On Amelia
The winter months may bring snow
and sleet to the northern parts of the
country, but here on Amelia Island the
average winter temperatures are mild
enough to enjoy a wide array of outdoor activities. Take a relaxing stroll
along the beach; go sightseeing in the
downtown Historic District; play a
round of golf; or spend a day on the
water fishing or sailing. Whatever you
choose, Amelia has a wintertime activity for you.
A list of special holiday and winter
events begins on page 7.
Please consult the map on page 16 to
help find your way around the island.

400 Years Under 8 Flags
Amelia Island is Florida’s Golden Isle which the French visited, the Spanish developed, the
English named and the Americans tamed. It is the only location in the United States to have been
under eight different flags.
French
1562 - 1565
The island’s first recorded European
visitor was France’s Jean Ribault on May 3,
1562. He named the island "Isle de Mai."
Two years later, Rene de Laudonniere
founded Fort Caroline nearby.
Spanish
1565 - 1763
The Spanish, under Pedro Menendez,
defeated the French and founded St.
Augustine in 1565. During their long dominion, the Spanish concentrated on educating and converting the natives, and the
island name of "Santa Maria" was derived
from a mission here. The mission and settlement were destroyed in 1702 by the
English. Oglethorpe renamed the island
"Amelia" after the daughter of George II.
4
Amelia Now Winter 2012-13
British
1763 - 1783
The island became known as "Egmont"
from the Earl of Egmont’s large indigo
plantation. Revolutionary forces invaded in
1777 and 1778.
Spanish 1783-1821
(with 3 interruptions)
After the Revolution, Britain ceded
Florida back to Spain. Jefferson’s Embargo
Act of 1807, which closed U.S. ports to
foreign shipping, made the border town
of Fernandina a center of smuggling and
piracy.
Patriots
March 17, 1812
With secret U.S. blessings, the socalled "Patriots of Amelia Island" overthrew
the Spanish and hoisted their own flag on
March 17, 1812. They replaced it with the
U.S. flag the next day, but Spain demanded
return of the island. The Spanish completed
Fort San Carlos in 1816.
Senator David Yulee, the railroad ran from
Fernandina to Cedar Key.
Confederacy
Green Cross
of Florida
1861 - 1862
June 1817
To liberate Florida from Spanish control, Sir Gregor MacGregor seized Fort
San Carlos in June, 1817, and hoisted his
Green Cross standard. After his withdrawal,
the Spanish attempted to regain control but
were repelled by forces led by Jared Irwin
and Ruggles Hubbard.
Mexican
Rebel Flag
December 1817
Irwin and Hubbard were joined by the
pirate Luis Aury, who gained control and
raised the Mexican rebel flag. U.S. troops
occupied the island in December, 1817,
and held it "in trust for Spain."
United States
1821 - present
(with one interruption)
Spain ceded Florida to the United States
in 1821. Work began on Fort Clinch in 1847.
In the 1850s, Fernandina moved from Old
Town to become the terminus for Florida’s
first cross-state railroad. Organized by
The Confederates took over Fort Clinch
in April, 1861, but federal troops regained
it in March, 1862, and occupied it for the
duration of the Civil War.
The Golden Years 1875-1900:
Fernandina's Historic District retains the
evidence of the town's greatest period of
prosperity. Tourists flocked here via steamers direct from New York to stay in two elegant hotels. Shipping boomed with lumber,
phosphate and naval stores. The SpanishAmerican War fostered gunrunning from the
local port, and troops again occupied Fort
Clinch. After the turn of the century, tourism
surged southward.
1900-present: Early in the 20th century, the modern shrimping industry was
founded here, pioneered by Mike Salvador,
Salvatore Versaggi and Antonio Poli. Shrimp,
oyster and crab canneries prospered until
the Depression. The 30s brought two pulp
mills, Container Corporation of America
(now RockTenn) and Rayonier. In recent
times, sparked by Omni Amelia Island
Plantation and the Ritz-Carlton, the island
has gained national attention as a resort.

Amelia's Prehistoric Treasures
A walk along Amelia's beautiful
beaches can often yield a spectacular
amount of treasure. Not gold or silver,
though. This treasure comes in the form
of shells, driftwood, coral, and perhaps
most popular - fossilized shark teeth.
The definition of "fossil" is "the remains or imprint of an organism from
a previous geologic time." Sharks that
died millions of years ago have only their
teeth as a remainder - as sharks have no
bones, their entire skeleton is made up of
cartilage.
When a shark dies and its cartilage dissolves, the teeth fall to the bottom of the
ocean and get covered with sandy sediment. The sediment prevents oxygen and
bacteria from reaching the tooth, and it
fossilizes over the course of about 10,000
years. During the process, the white teeth
will acquire the colors of the minerals
surrounding it as the minerals eventually replace the dentine and enamel that

makes up the tooth. That's why most of
the teeth that are found on the beach and
collected aren't white, but gray, black or
brown.
If you want to try your luck at finding
one of Amelia's fossilized pieces of history, low tide usually is the best time to
look. The water is calmer and clearer at
low tide, giving you better visibility. Plus,
there is a larger area of beach available to
search. The receding waters also expose
some of the best areas to look for teeth.
These areas are the drop-offs that occur
just along the shoreline where the surf
goes back into the sea. There's commonly
a six to twelve-inch drop in the sand level
here called a "wash-in." Rocky sediment
collects here, and you can usually find a
large amount of sea rocks, shells and, if
you're lucky, shark teeth. Morning is a
good time to search, if for no other reason
than the fact that there are fewer people
around to contend with.

Another tip when searching along
the shoreline is to concentrate on areas
where the sand is darker. It's also a good
idea to head out after a storm. Ocean
storms typically bring in all kinds of debris that deposit on the beach, including
teeth.
Whether you're six or sixty, searching
for fossilized shark teeth can be a fun adventure. It's yet another way to enjoy the
beautiful beaches that Amelia Island has
to offer.

A Winter Pilgrim
This glowing account of 19th century Fernandina was written by a Chicago Tribune correspondent staying at
the Egmont Hotel, one of Fernandina's
grand hotels formerly located at the
corner of Beech and Seventh Streets.
The article, excerpted here, ran in the
January 25, 1879 issue of The Florida
Mirror. It was entitled "Among the
Flowers of Florida" and signed "A Winter Pilgrim."

A 50-block area of Downtown Fernandina
is cited on the National Register of Historic
Places because of its amazing preservation of
late Victorian architecture. This reflects Fernandina's great prosperity from tourism and
shipping in the late 1800s.
When Henry Flagler bypassed our island in building his railroad down through
Florida, tourism surged southward, shipping
activity soon waned, and Fernandina slipped
into sleepy obscurity. Without so-called
"progress" the old buildings were repaired
rather than replaced, and our architectural
heritage was preserved.
Centre Street remains impressive with its
"handsome brick blocks" and the side streets,
especially S. 7th and N. 6th, remain enchanting with mansions and cottages adorned
with Victorian gingerbread.
For guided tours of Centre Street and the
surrounding blocks, contact the Amelia Island Museum of History at 261-7378.

Winter Fishing at Amelia
Story and photos by Terry Lacoss
Cold nights and mild days find a variety
of Amelia Island game fish willing to take
a variety of both artificial lures and natural
baits. Look for some of the best action to
come during warm periods of weather,
while avoiding those dreaded northeasters.
Winter fishermen will find a mixed bag
of saltwater game fish schooling at the St.
Mary's jetty rocks, including sea trout, flounder, whiting, black drum and more. Drifting
live shrimp deep under a trout float close
to low areas of the jetties is a deadly winter
fishing tactic for trout, flounder and redfish.
Fresh dead shrimp or cut baits fished on the
bottom attracts strikes from black drum, red
drum, whiting, bluefish and more.
Delicious-eating sheepshead weighing
from 2-10 lbs. simply love live fiddler crabs
and barnacles fished close to jetty rocks.
Sea trout are plentiful at both Cumberland
and Nassau Sounds, particularly during the
last portion of the incoming tide. Look for
areas of clean ocean water at both inlets to
produce specks weighing from 1-8 lbs.
Amelia Island
Charter Fishing, LLC
Key areas to target excellent-eating sea
trout at Nassau Sound include the mouth
of Sawpit Creek where a shallow sandbar
drops off into a deep hole at the Nassau
Sound Bridge. Here, winter trout fishermen typically drift live shrimp deep under
a trout float. The small rock jetties located
just north along the beach at Nassau Sound
also harbor sea trout during the last of the
incoming and first of the falling tide.
The George Crady fishing pier at Nassau
Sound is an excellent winter fishing location
while drifting live shrimp under a trout float
during the last of the incoming tide. Some
of the best trout fishing here comes from
the northwest corner of the pier. Fishermen
wading along the nearby shallow shoreline,
just northwest of the "Shave Fishing Pier",
will find superb feeding grounds for sea
trout, whiting, flounder redfish, sheepshead
and puppy drum. Some of the best fishing
at Nassau Sound comes from the northwest
portion of the George Crady fishing pier
and the adjacent shoreline to the west.

The southwest corner of the George
Crady fishing pier also offers excellent winter trout and flounder action while wade
fishing along the grassy shorelines during
the last of the incoming and first portions of
the falling tides.
These shallow, sandy grass flats also offer
excellent fly fishing for wade fishermen. A
6-7 weight fly rod setup works just fine for
sea trout weighing to four pounds. Employ
a short six-foot leader with a 10-lb. tippet,
with a white and chartreuse color pattern
"Clouser" fly tied to the business end of the
leader. Strip your fly slowly along the deep
edges of the flooded grasses.
If you enjoy targeting excellent-eating
whiting, anchor your boat just southwest
of "Bird Island" in 10-20 feet of water.
Fishermen here normally target whiting
with local fresh shrimp. When the black
drum begin to spawn in late winter, pieces
of blue crab are the baits of choice.
Cumberland Sound is located at the
northern tip of Amelia Island and fed by the
Nassau River, Intracoastal Waterway and
several tidal rivers. With so many tidal rivers feeding this fertile sound, winter fishing
just doesn't get any better!
For the best bay fishing at Cumberland
Sound, fish the flooded edges of the marsh
where oysterbars attract schooling winter
game fish. Sea trout and redfish are typically found schooling during the winter season, so be prepared for fast action that only
the cooler months of winter can offer.
Bottom fishing with fresh dead shrimp or
cut baits in the deep waters of Cumberland
Sounds attracts an aggressive winter bite
from black drum, whiting, bonnet head
sharks, flounder, bluefish, red drum and
more. During late winter jack crevalle,
Spanish mackerel and bluefish begin to stage
a massive attack on schools of glass minnows
Delicious-eating sea trout are a popular winter
catch in the waters surrounding Amelia Island.
close to the surface. Casting or trolling small
jigs or spoons offers fast fishing action. This
is a perfect family fishing opportunity!
Some of the best trophy largemouth bass
fishing of the year comes during the cooler
winter months. Last winter, Florida bass
weighing up to 12 pounds were caught in
nearby freshwater lakes and rivers.
Soaking wild shiners under a brightly
colored float, or slow trolling live shiners
often produces the best big bass action.

During warming trends, largemouth will
move onto the flats and can be taken with
a variety of artificial lures including darkcolored plastic worms and rattle traps.
Lofton Creek, located a few minutes west
of Amelia Island, is overlooked by many
local bass fishermen, but is considered to
be one of the best freshwater bass streams
in the south. Fishermen have easy access
to this narrow tidal river from a boat ramp
and park located on AIA. You won't have
to navigate too far down river, as some of
the best trophy bass fishing in Lofton Creek
begins right at the boat ramp and runs
some two miles down river. Expect to catch
striped bass and a mixed bag of saltwater
game fish where salt and fresh water mix.
Offshore fishing is excellent during the
winter for hard-fighting gag grouper, red
snapper and black sea bass at many of
the close-to-shore natural and artificial fish
havens. Some of the best bottom fishing
action can be enjoyed while fishing right on
the bottom with local squid, cut baits and
cigar minnows. Deep jigging with light
tackle while tipping jigs with squid is also
becoming very popular.
Look for Schultz's Fish Market, located
some five miles offshore of the south end of
Amelia Island, to harbor some of northeast
Florida's very best winter bottom fishing.
Here, drift-fishing boats will find a natural
lime rock bottom, numerous two to threefoot rock ledges and man-made reefs. Other
popular winter fish havens include East
FC, HH, AH, RL FA and KBY. All of these
popular locations are identified on the local
offshore chart with coordinates. Be sure
to pick up a copy of the Florida Wildlife
Commission's fishing rules and regulations
on fishing at area bait shops, or visit www.
myfwc.com for updated fishing regulations.
Northeast Florida's Gulf Stream harbors
excellent fishing for giant wahoo that can
weigh over the 90-lb. mark. Look for some
of the best wahoo action to come while trolling in water depths of 200-1,000 feet. Large
"Drone" spoons rigged to wire lines and
trolling weights help get the lure down deep
to where wahoo are typically holding.
Surf fishing along the beaches of Amelia
Island during the winter produces excellent
catches of beach whiting and blues. Fresh
shrimp is the bait of choice when fished
right on the bottom with a "Fish Finder"
setup. Look for the high falling tide to offer
some of the best fishing on foot, particularly
when a flood tide arrives at mid-morning.
Key areas to surf fish along Amelia Island's
pristine beaches include the old "Pipe Line",
the little jetty rocks located at Fort Clinch
and the southern tip of Amelia Island.
Non-Florida residents under the age of
