Osmolarity: The concentration of an osmotic solution especially when measured in
osmols or milliosmols per liter of solution. It can also be referred to as mOsm/kg
pH: A shorthand designation for the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution,
defined as the negative logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen ions. The concentration of pH reflects the total amount of hydrogen ions present in solution.
Alkaline: A solution whose pH is more than 7.0
Acidic: A solution whose pH is less than 7.0
Buffered solutions and/or buffers: Solutions which resist a change in pH when
small amounts of an acid or base are added. However, these two compounds must
be able to coexist in a solution, without completely neutralizing each other. A chemical system that prevents changes in Hydrogen ion concentration, a true buffer is a
stable solution of known pH
Lactic Acid: A hygroscopic organic acid C3H6O3 that is known in three optically
isomeric forms:
D-lactic acid: The dextrorotatory form present normally in blood and muscle tissue
as a product of the metabolism of glucose and/or glycogen
L-lactic acid: The levorotatory form obtained by biological fermentation of sucrose

Successfully shipping semen requires three (3) components:
1. An accurate sperm count providing a total concentration, & progressive
motility
2. Total motility expressed in a percentage format
3. Total progressive motility expressed in a percentage format
The Canine Express offers everything necessary to properly transport and inseminate a bitch; we offer a variety of extenders that are similar to our Equine extenders
so you can choose which works best for your dog without spending $50.00 on a
dose! I recommend our Universal Timentin, cut it up into 12 – 13 mL individual
doses in a 15 mL centrifuge tube and freeze off for future use. Your cost per dose
will be less than .50! The most important thing to remember is how you collect and
process your dogs semen.

To pin point the due date of your bitch, always remember that you do not
calculate in the last date of insemination. You must begin from the date of ovulation
and then count forward 57 - 63 days.

***In general, keeping your vaccination and worming program up to date in a consistent profile will benefit the overall health of your sire and bitch as well as the puppies they produce.
***Keeping good breeding and vaccinations records are essential to a successful
breeding program that will increase your conception rates rewarding you with
healthy puppies.
***Giving a microbial such as our First Start to your puppies will provide them a
much healthier gut and thus the opportunity to maximize their growth and development.
*** Freezing semen: If you have not already begun to preserve your dogs genetics
for future use we can help so that you can perpetuate the hard work and memories of

Fractionate the dogs semen upon collection
First part of the ejaculate is a clear prostatic type fluid and has a lower pH
which is spermicidal
Second part of the ejaculate is considered “sperm rich” and has an offwhite color
Third part the ejaculate is again a clear prostatic type fluid and has a lower
pH which is spermicidal
A transport dose should be as follows:
A defined sperm count that yields:
1. Total Concentration
2. Total Motility
3. Progressive Motility
400 million Progressively Motile Sperm - “Total Sperm in the Dose”
30 – 50 Million Sperm Per Extended Milliliter - “Extended Concentration”
*** This will yield a total dose volume of 4 mL to 13 mL, which will accommodate
virtually for any size dog
*** More than anything, the main goal is to achieve one shipment per cycle; that in
itself is a huge savings especially on your end. Semen extended properly (<50 million/mL) will remain viable for up to 5 days which will cover a normal heat cycle.
*** One can expect a 50 - 70% motility with less damage to the acrosome, when
proper nutrition is provided to the sperm; using broader extension reduces the
buildup of lactic acid and thus the pH of the semen remains at a more constant level
(6.75 - 6.9) thus slowing the degradation of the sperm.
*** Try a head to head trial on your next collection and do a semen cooling study;
we can assist you in that process, the most important aspect is an accurate sperm
count and motility analysis both total and progressive motility.
