CASE STUDY: BURRIDGE CAMPUS
“Necessity is the
mother of
invention”
From non-compliance and notice of impending fines to
winning the RRFB Mobius Award for Institution of the Year.
A one year journey
A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH
1. Reviewed current legislation
2. Reviewed regional waste authorities requirements
3. Looked at our occupants and the type of waste we
produce
4. Analyzed our waste collection system (bins, locations,
signage, sorting)
5. Data collection
6. Education of staff and students
RESULTS OF ANALYSIS
• Trade shop waste, reasonably well sorted only minor work to be done here.
• Major problem with Municipal waste (Garbage, Recyclables, refundables,
paper, organics). Problems:
•
•
•
•
•
•
POOR SIGNAGE
POOR SORTING BINS
NOT ENOUGH BINS (150FT RULE)
NO EDUCATION OF STAFF AND STUDENTS
NO SECONDARY SORTING BEFORE DISPOSAL

Waste – Where Does it Go?
Easy Rules:
Paper is never garbage. Clean paper goes in the paper bin. Wet
paper goes in the compost bin.
All Plastic is recyclable.
Styrofoam is always garbage.
Refundable Bottles & Containers – Make sure you have emptied
them first before removing the cap and then placing them in the
refundable bin.
Tim Horton Cups – The plastic lids go in the plastic recycle bin.
Clean Tim’s paper cups with no liquid go in the paper recycle bin.
Take out Coffee/Tea Cups – all other take out cups are garbage.
The lids go in the plastic recycle bin.
Washrooms – Paper towel only in the bins. Do not throw other
items in.
When in doubt – look for signs, check the separation guide or ask
a friend.
