CASE STUDY: BURRIDGE CAMPUS “Necessity is the mother of invention” From non-compliance and notice of impending fines to winning the RRFB Mobius Award for Institution of the Year. A one year journey A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH 1. Reviewed current legislation 2. Reviewed regional waste authorities requirements 3. Looked at our occupants and the type of waste we produce 4. Analyzed our waste collection system (bins, locations, signage, sorting) 5. Data collection 6. Education of staff and students RESULTS OF ANALYSIS • Trade shop waste, reasonably well sorted only minor work to be done here. • Major problem with Municipal waste (Garbage, Recyclables, refundables, paper, organics). Problems: • • • • • • POOR SIGNAGE POOR SORTING BINS NOT ENOUGH BINS (150FT RULE) NO EDUCATION OF STAFF AND STUDENTS NO SECONDARY SORTING BEFORE DISPOSAL NO RECORD SYSTEM AND DATA COLLECTION Before After Before After Before After Current double sorting of Garbage Data Collection Date 30 20 10 0 Cardboard Paper 10/10/2011 10/11/2011 10/12/2011 10/13/2011 10/14/2011 10/15/2011 Cardboard 10 10 2 6 0 28 Paper 20 4 6 8 10 48 Organic 10 12 14 10 12 58 recyclables recyclables 0 4 9 4 5 22 Garbage Garbage 0 2 5 8 7 22 Waste Type Cardboard Paper Totals 10/17/2011 10/18/2011 10/19/2011 10/20/2011 10/21/2011 10/22/2011 5 10 2 6 0 23 2 4 6 8 10 30 10 12 14 10 12 58 recyclables 5 4 9 4 5 27 Garbage 2 5 4 8 5 24 Organic Date Waste Type Weight LBS Date 10/25/2011 10/26/2011 10/27/2011 10/28/2011 10/29/2011 Cardboard 5 10 2 6 0 23 Paper 2 4 6 8 10 30 Cardboard Paper Organic Garbage Totals 10/24/2011 15 10 5 0 Organic recyclables Weight LBS Waste Type Totals Weight LBS WASTE DISTRIBUTION SHEET BURRIDGE CAMPUS (OCTOBER 2011) 15 10 5 0 Cardboard Paper Organic 12 14 10 12 58 recyclables 5 4 9 4 5 27 Garbage Garbage 2 5 7 5 6 25 Date Waste Type Totals 10/30/2011 10/31/2011 11/1/2011 11/2/2011 Cardboard 5 10 2 Paper 2 4 6 10 12 5 4 Organic recyclables Garbage Weight LBS 10 recyclables Organic 15 10 5 0 Cardboard Paper 11/3/2011 11/4/2011 6 0 23 8 10 30 14 10 12 58 recyclables 9 4 5 27 Garbage 0 Organic WASTE DISTRIBUTION SHEET (BURRIDGE) Cost per unit Total Cost lbs $0.07 $142.75 5665 lbs $0.07 $396.55 251.31 8916 lbs $0.08 $713.27 347.79 52.27 383 BG $0.75 $287.25 876.08 179.68 7140 lbs $0.06 $428.39 TOTAL $1,968.21 Cost per unit Total Cost Waste type/Month Apr-12 May-12 Jun-12 Jul-12 Aug-12 Sep-12 Oct-12 Nov-12 Dec-12 Jan-13 Feb-13 Mar-13 Total Cardboard (lbs) 88.02 107.36 76.76 41.06 201.56 417.19 336.2 425.03 139.04 207.1 331.78 29.87 2039 Paper (lbs) 422.56 313.36 766 201 612.39 1223.3 505.8 579.01 407.48 634 526.8 81.76 Organic (lbs) 756.76 711.66 692.7 78.25 268.49 1467.6 1229 1814.3 793.38 1104 1522.6 Recyclables (BGS) 38 55 38 24 31 38 45 45 23 46 Garbage (lbs) 323.66 409.95 411.1 149.2 482.4 1295.2 897.9 1299.5 1128.7 742.4 WASTE HAULER INVOICE INFORMATION Waste type/Month Apr-12 May-12 Jun-12 Jul-12 Aug-12 Sep-12 Oct-12 Nov-12 Dec-12 Jan-13 Feb-13 Mar-13 Total Cardboard (lbs) 550 690 355 250 595 360 1040 795 200 375 0 0 5210 lbs $0.07 $364.70 Paper (lbs) 650 445 1200 700 850 690 250 255 0 0 0 0 5040 lbs $0.07 $352.80 Organic (lbs) 1377 1475 1344 700 820 1588 1895 1701 1240 1340 0 0 13480 lbs $0.08 $1,078.40 Recyclables (lbs) 120 122 113 73 91 129 121 104 78 99 0 0 1050 BG $0.75 $787.50 Garbage (lbs) 1755 2904 2904 2772 2574 3498 3933 4048 2310 3388 0 0 30086 lbs $0.06 $1,805.16 TOTAL $4,388.56 Savings in 10 months $2,420.35 Waste – Where Does it Go? Easy Rules: Paper is never garbage. Clean paper goes in the paper bin. Wet paper goes in the compost bin. All Plastic is recyclable. Styrofoam is always garbage. Refundable Bottles & Containers – Make sure you have emptied them first before removing the cap and then placing them in the refundable bin. Tim Horton Cups – The plastic lids go in the plastic recycle bin. Clean Tim’s paper cups with no liquid go in the paper recycle bin. Take out Coffee/Tea Cups – all other take out cups are garbage. The lids go in the plastic recycle bin. Washrooms – Paper towel only in the bins. Do not throw other items in. When in doubt – look for signs, check the separation guide or ask a friend.
