June 2015 Weeders’ Digest — 2 President’s message June 2015 From your President Doreen Morash Gorgeous Okanagan weather is bringing us into the gardening season a month earlier than usual and the majestic bearded Iris is in bloom in my garden. I find that this exotic bloom of our Northern Hemisphere is the closest we come to the blooms in the Southern Hemisphere. I love them! Everything from the miniatures, intermediates and the tall bearded iris always seem to stop my eye in appreciation of their beauty and scent. I pick copious amounts and place them in various rooms of my home to admire. Ah….the beauty of life! The Kelowna Garden Club is off to another busy year with a very successful Plant Sale, Nature’s Gold Sale and many Open Gardens to view in the upcoming months. The Flower Show held in conjunction with the Heritage Society this year at the Guisachan Gardens, is in planning mode and will feature art, music, and much more for people to enjoy as they spend time viewing the amazing flowers. Don’t miss this event on June 27th and plan on entering some of your garden flowers. Also, the Master Gardeners are very helpful to our members at our monthly meetings, so if you have a burning question or inquiry about something pertaining to your garden, don’t hesitate to ask one of them. We were also pleased to hear from Debbie MacMillan and the upcoming Flower Power tour of Kelowna. Plan to attend this tour and view some amazing gardens in our city, as all the proceeds go to very worthwhile endeavors in our community. Use some of our “tips of the month”, go on some of the excursions, take a book out of our Library, enter our Parlour Shows, bring a friend to our meetings, be involved. Enjoy life and this gardening season! I’ll leave you with this quote by William Wordsworth to contemplate…. “Tis my faith that every flower enjoys the air it breathes!” Photos courtesy of D Morash’s cousin in Orlando, Florida June 2015 Weeders’ Digest — 3 COMMUNITIES IN BLOOM - GREEN THUMB GARDEN CONTEST 2015 submitted by Wilma Schellenberger - Community Liaison The Communities in Bloom Committee and the City Parks Department is sponsoring the citywide GREEN THUMB GARDEN CONTEST 2014. June 2015 Weeders’ Digest — 6 Submitted by Rosemary Botner Here on your doorstep… in the centre of Kelowna, is a truly precious gem. Guisachan Heritage Park is so much more than a pretty place to walk or relax. The history of our city is encapsulated in this tiny place. In the mid-1800s, a certain John McDougall became aware of the region as he drove pack trains for the Hudson’s Bay Company. In 1860 he left the company and opened an HBC store near Pandosy Mission. In 1861 he pre-empted 160 acres of land, He added to this until he owned a 480 acre ranch. After his wife’s death he sold the ranch which was bought by Lord and Lady Aberdeen. They encouraged others to move to the area while pioneering fruit tree farming and ranching. The fruit trees failed and the land reverted to traditional farming. The ranch was sold in 1903 and resold six month’s later. W.C. Cameron purchased half the Guisachan Ranch (240 acres) and moved into Guisachan House with his wife and three sons. The Camerons were civic leaders in the new city. Their made their home a social gathering place – soirees, riding club events, all the while developing a prize winning farm. In 1910 Mr. Cameron died and his sons, under the leadership of Paddy, ran the farm. The youngest brother died at Vimy Ridge. In 1923 the property was divided by Paddy and Alister. Paddy and his wife Elaine kept Guisachan House and built up a thriving dairy business. The Camerons continued their parents’ community involvement, with Elaine teaching piano lessons in her living room. Paddy sold the ranch in 1966 to Aberdeen Holdings. He died in 1984. In 1986, 2.4 acres were acquired by the city and Central Okanagan Heritage Society (COHS) volunteers restored the property to its former glory. In 1996 it was designated a municipal heritage site. Elaine Cameron who lived at Guisachan House from 1919 to 1978, developed extensive gardens in 1920s and 1930s. She included rockeries, perennial borders, bulbs, shrub, rose gardens and trees, many of which still exist. The garden won many local and provincial competitions. She kept a diary of her work which has be invaluable to the COHS in their revitalization of the Cameron Gardens. Explore this quiet refuge in the centre of Kelowna and relive a little of the past. You could stroll through Elaine Cameron’s Gardens, restored to their former glory, to revive your soul. You could dine in Guisachan House in the restaurant there, or even get married in the park! On June 27th you could attend the Kelowna Garden Club’s annual juried Flower Show. Give a “Salute to Elaine Cameron and her diary” by entering a large exhibit of flowers and greenery from your own garden. (Class 21 in show schedule) Congratulations to COHS for 25 years of recreating and tending the Cameron Garden. Bravo and thank you! June 2015 Weeders’ Digest — 7 Preparing for A Flower Show Below are some tips to make exhibiting at flower shows easier for you and to help make this an experience you want to continue each year. Remember, it is fun! The most important item is to Read the Schedule thoroughly and take note of the details which explain the criteria for the entry. Choose the best possible quality of plant material to exhibit. The best time to cut blooms is early morning or late evening when the flowers have the maximum amount of water in their stems. Cut the stems as long as possible and place the flowers in warm water and leave them for several hours or overnight to absorb as much water as possible. Re-cut the stems before placing. Arrive with adequate time to enter and place your entry. Check to see that your entry card is correctly filled out so it can be correctly placed. You will use the entry tags provided at the show. Fill in your name and address, the name of the flower and mark which class you are entering. There will be someone available to help you. It is important to name your exhibit as it adds to the educational aspect of the show and is of interest to those attending the show. Be sure your entries have enough water in their containers. The judge’s decision is final, and remember that they have done their best to evaluate the entries. Also remember, that the judges make their decision on how the exhibit appears at the time of judging. Accept both success and failure with good grace. If you do have a complaint about the show or the judging, contact the show chairman. Check to see when you may pick up your exhibits and be on time. Judging standards used are those of the BC Ctouncil of Garden Clubs The garden club will not be responsible for loss or damage to exhibitors’ containers and personal effects. Exhibiting should be enjoyable. Winning is great, but it is not the sole purpose of entering the show. Adapted from the Handbook. "A Guide to Organizing Flower Shows for Garden Clubs" by Ruth McLeod and BC Council of Garden Club Handbook. Photos Jean Dangerfield My Mystery Plant This plant appeared in my rock garden about two years ago, when we built our new fence to protect it from the deer. It is now about three years old, but I believe it was there for many years and the deer just kept eating it. I don’t remember planting it. Can anyone tell me what it is? Jean Dangerfield 250 764-0620 Hope you will plant your Dahlias outside soon, at least 10" 12" deep along with a 4 foot, strong stake. One tablespoon of low nitrogen fertilizer should be mixed into the soil at planting time. That will ensure the competition for the Dahlia Cup will be fierce in September. Marianna Photos Rosemary Botner June 2015 Weeders’ Digest — 10 Have you tried using milk to control powdery mildew on your roses? Open Gardens Summer 2015 Sunday June 21 , Sunday august 23, Sunday September 13 Sunday June 21 1-4 PM Click on addresses for links to Google maps to help you plan your day The milk solution used by home gardeners is made with 1 part of milk and 2 parts of water. The dilution is then sprayed on stems, leaves and flowers of the plant for every 10-14 days. Even if you don’t see any fungal growth yet, using the solution regularly will ensure prevention. http://bestplants.com/control-powdery-mildew-on-roses-with-milk/ Don and Jane Rampone, 1038 Cameron Avenue, Kelowna Note: Major recycling and waste reduction at this property. It does not need to be a huge, magnificently refined garden. Your garden expresses who you are! You work hard to produce what you have, so show it off to appreciative viewers! Only members will visit and, if you wish it, Master Gardener Judges giving you a chance to win the Trophy and prize awarded by Natures Gold. All judges comments remain confidential so it is a totally non-threatening experience! Digital photos will be taken on the day of your Open Garden and will be included in the Power Point presentation in November. Please note, you do not have to open your garden to share digital photos of your garden for the power point. Finally, this is fun! We hope you will consider opening your garden for all the members to see. Tip of the Month from Sue Bannerman The tip of the Month is again related to The Year of the Soil. At our March Meeting we learned how to make compost and by now our compost heaps are churning out “black gold”. The question now is what to do with it. We know that we can spread it on our plants, dig it into our soil and then there is this thing called “compost tea”. A brew of such richness our plants will literally jump out of the ground and grow with health and vigour. But....it’s very messy to make! Brewing, straining, etc... who has the time? My tip this month is to take the wonderful compost and an old pair of nylons or pantyhose, fill the leg of the nylon with compost, tie the end with a knot and pop the whole thing in a pail of water to “brew”. When the tea is done, remove the nylon filled compost and feed the t ea t o y o u r p l ant s. It’s like Compost Tea Bags!!
