WHY ENGAGE WITH THE ARTS
Adapted from “Learning Through the Arts” by Dee Dickinson
• The arts provide opportunities for expression—bringing the inner
workings of ourselves out into the world around us.
• The arts give us a language that all people can speak, connecting
us culturally and socially by breaking down the barriers of
economics and education.
• The arts allow us to learn about and appreciate other cultures.
• The arts provide the means for everyone to learn, improving
academic achievement through test scores, and enhancing social
skills as well as critical and creative thinking.
• The arts make it possible to use personal strengths in meaningful
ways, allowing bridges to understanding difficult abstractions.
Learning to trust and develop friendships while engaged in
creativity brings the connection down to one-on-one and allows
the larger community to gather and experience the arts together.
College Theater Presents
Welcome to the MAC!
We are so grateful that you are here to support our college productions, and to
help usher in the next generation of talent.
The McAninch Arts Center strives to be the cultural epicenter of DuPage
County. We host a variety of world-class touring shows and more importantly,
more than 1,000 students perform on our stages, celebrating their talents and
learning in theater, music, dance and visual arts. We strive to give our students
experience in a professional working environment and to provide access to the
arts through outreach programs, performance opportunities, discounted tickets
and master classes.
Please visit the Cleve Carney Art Gallery while you’re here. Drop in on our
free Music Fridays @ Noon Series. Come to one of our College Theater preor post-show discussions. Stay connected to us by joining us on Facebook
(AtTheMac) or by joining our e-newsletter for news about all the events at the
MAC (www.AtTheMAC.org). And consider coming back to audition for a show,
join one of our music ensembles, take a dance class or take private lessons.
Now, enjoy the show!

DIRECTOR’S NOTE
I’ve told this story before, but feel its presence very personally, in regards to the themes of this script.
My mother taught in my elementary school, although at the time of the story I’m about to relate she
was not my teacher. I was quite small, first or second grade, and my mother was teaching fifth and
sixth Science, Math and History.
Several times a week, we would have to go in very early, well before the first bus arrived at the
building, and I was told to read or finish my homework quietly at the back of my mother’s room. My
mother would leave, and be gone for several minutes, and then return and work quietly at her desk
until the time that I could go to my own classroom, when she’d give me a hug and kiss and wish me a
good day. I found these early mornings quite unnecessary, and one day complained loudly about them.
That’s when my mother told me the story of another student, an older boy whom she did not identify.
This young man came from a large family of very little means, and many of the teachers suspected
that he might not be treated well. So, together they’d decided to purchase him a few changes of
clothes, some soap and a towel. As this young man came on an early bus and was the first student
to arrive at school, every morning one teacher would escort him to the boys’ gym, where he could
shower in private and change into clean clothes, get a sack lunch packed by the teacher, and be in
the classroom before another student arrived. At the end of the day, he changed back into his clothes
from home, for his bus ride back. This was their small way of trying to make his life’s journey a little
smoother; he came to school very dirty, and they suspected the sack lunch might, at some times, be
his only daily meal. Although I never knew who this student was, I also never felt the need to complain
about our early mornings again.
Working on A Christmas Carol, in this lovely adaptation, this story again came back to me. I’ve
always loved Dickens, and I can’t help but wonder what would happen if we all tried to be “as good
a friend…” as Scrooge exemplifies, after his enlightenment. A truly optimistic—some would say
naïve—hope… but it’s mine, nonetheless.

Friends of the MAC
The Friends of the MAC is a family of people who have decided
that a world-class performing and visual arts center should reside
in their community. Ticket sales only provide 42 percent of our
$3 million operating budget. It is through the support of College
of DuPage and through the generous gifts from patrons and local
businesses that we can keep art in our gallery and on our stages.
Your gift to the MAC
• Brings nationally and internationally renowned artists to
our community
• Supports our SchoolStage program that annually offers
affordable arts experiences to thousands of school children
• Provides students and community members the opportunity
to interact with artists
• Enhances the quality of life in our community
Without the generous support of the Friends of the MAC we would
not be the cultural hub of DuPage County. We gratefully thank our
friends and we invite others to join them.
For complete details, visit the MAC Ticket Office or call the
MAC at (630) 942-2263 or the College of DuPage Foundation

Endowment. Donations made to the MAC’s Endowment, our
“savings account,” go into a principal secured, invested account
that will provide ongoing support for arts programming for years
to come. The McAninch Arts Center and the College of DuPage
Foundation can also provide you with Planned Giving opportunities
that include life income, special trusts and bequests.
