In keeping with the long tradition of Austin Golf, Lions Municipal Golf Course
has served it's citizens since 1934 and has long been the city's most popular
course. Constructed originally by the Lions Club in 1928, Lions has hosted
notable golfers, including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and of course Tom Kite
and Ben Crenshaw. While "old muni" has changed over the years it remains a
quality test but very playable course. Even though the course would be
considered short by today's standards, 6001 yards, it's relatively narrow tree
lined fairways and small greens provides a challenge to even the longest
hitters.
Conveniently located in the center of the Texas Golden Triangle, where
two-thirds of the state's wealth and population reside, Horseshoe Bay Resort
lies along the panoramic shore of beautiful Lake LBJ in the midst of the scenic
Texas Hill Country. This geographic locale creates the ideal location for golfers
due to its mild summers and short winters.
Horseshoe Bay Resort, named one of America's Best Golf Resorts by Golf
Magazine in 2006, is home to three championship Robert Trent Jones, Sr. golf
courses - Slick Rock, Ram Rock and Apple Rock. Golf course architect Jones,
Sr., designed an estimated 500 prestigious courses during his lifetime. His
three creations for Horseshoe Bay Resort are among his finest works of art.
The courses have all been featured in the "50 Best Courses in Texas" list in the
Dallas Morning News every year since the origin of the annual ranking in
1989.

Morris Williams Golf Course was constructed in 1963 and opened in 1964 as
Austin's 3rd municipal course. Designed by Leon Howard, one of the most
prolific golf course architects of the time, the course features small, slightly
elevated, contoured greens. These features combined with the rolling terrain
probably make Morris Williams Golf Course the most difficult of all of the city's
courses. However, the recent addition of forward tees and the improved turf
make the course playable for all levels of golfers. Morris Williams Golf Course
was named after Morris Williams Jr., potentially the best golfer ever developed
in Austin. He won every trophy available to him from the Austin area, from
the Texas Junior Championships to the National Air Force Trophy now named
in his honor. He lost his life as a young man during the Korean war in a jet
plane crash in Florida. Morris Williams golf course served as the home of the
University of Texas golf teams under legendary coaches Harvey Penick and
George Hannon. During this time the Univeristy won 2 NCAA Championships
with teams that featured Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw.
A simply unique experience tucked in the heart of the Texas Hill Country
Mustang Creek Golf Course has continued to evolve into a tough, challenging
course that has been named by Golf USA Tour Magazine as: "One of the finest
and most challenging 9 hole courses in the USA" In the 1990's through the
dedication of Board Members, Dale Cummings, Paul Pokorney, Ronnie Sladek,
and Keith Repa, a new course layout was created to remove 1 of the par 3's and
add 1 par 4. A new layout required Mustang Creek to rename the holes. 3
additional water hazards were installed and a professional water hydraulic
pumping system meant the Course had access to plentiful water. In the summer
of 2000, Mustang Creek lost a great friend and patron. Board Chairman Gillis
Conoley passed away. New Course sponsored tournaments brought players from
all over Central Texas. Mustang Creek is being recognized as having very
competitive home course players that possessed a unique skill that others could
not comprehend.
Established in 1968 and located in the rolling hills of Kingsland Texas,
Packsaddle Country Club offers 18 holes of fun filled golf that serves up twists
and turns to make for one heck of an enjoyable round. In 2006, the golf course
was completely renovated and re-routed by Jerry Slack and Leon Howard.
Featuring smooth rolling Tifdwarf greens and serpentine fairways, and broad
vistas of "Packsaddle Mountain, Packsaddle plays to 6,855 yards from the
"tournament tees". Packsaddle is also a great place to hone your game. Home
to a complete practice facility (with a double-ended driving range), 10,000
square foot putting green and a practice facility area with chipping green, you
may just end up with a short game that will make even "Gentle Ben" proud.

have been created for resident and migratory waterfowl. Despite the acreage
devoted to lakes, Kizer is suitable for players of all levels. Ample fairways and
the choice of 5 sets of tees provides each golfer the opportunity to play a
course that fits their skill level and a variety of ways to negotiate the
challenges. The course was named for Roy Kizer, golf course superintendent
at "old muni" (Lions Municipal Golf Course) from 1937 until his retirement in
1973. Kizer earned the respect of the Austin golf community through his
dedication to the course and his support of junior golf in Austin before his
death in 1974.
Everything a golfer dreams of is at ShadowGlen, a unique club that is
designed, built and managed by golfers with the golfer's needs in mind.
Challenge your game, not your pocketbook at this premier golf facility by
calling (512) 278-1304 or setting up your tee time online! The course was built
by the prestigious Golf Works, Inc., 2001 National Large Builder of the Year as
selected by Golf Course News. In an effort to raise the bar of the public golf
experience in Central Texas, Golf Works created what some are calling the
premier golf experience at any price, public or private. Once you play it, you'll
understand these accolades. The TifEagle greens are undulating and meant to
be speedy while the TifSport Bermuda provides the finest fairways available.
The new Y2 zoysia grass, usually reserved for the finest private courses, lines
the bunker walls.

Masterfully designed by Tom Kite, Roy Bechtol and Randy Russell, the
Legends Golf Course is an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all abilities. Our
par-72 course features Tif Sport Bermuda grass tees and fairways with Tif
Eagle Bermuda grass carpeting the greens. The architects transformed 200
acres of farm land into a masterpiece that flows through open links on the
front nine and transitions into the beautiful hill country on the back. This
scenic course in the Texas Hill Country offers solitude, elegance and
convenience along with challenging golf for the scratch player and forgiving
enough for the beginner. The 18- hole championship course measures 7,260
yards from the Championship tees offering players both links-style and Hill
Country golf at its very best. The golf course includes a 9,000 square foot

White Wing Golf Club is designed to fit within the natural surrounding and
enhance existing topographical features. Whenever possible, tees and greens
are incorporated into the existing Texas Hill Country landscape features such
as rolling hills, ravines and stands of decade old oak trees. Design features
and types of vegetation selected, blend with the surroundings while containing
different varieties of grasses and plants to create color and visual excitement.
Wolfdancer Golf Club is named in honor of the traditional wolf dance of the
Tonkawa Indians who once inhabited the area. World-renowned golf architect
Arthur Hills designed Wolfdancer to take full advantage of the natural lay of
the land. You will discover native grasses, trees, wildflowers, even a flock of
egrets as you move through the rolling prairie, heavily wooded ridgeline and
the river valley plain. Each player, no matter how skilled, will find Wolfdancer
a challenging yet satisfying experience.

Must-play golf courses in Texas
Old American The Colony (theoldamericangolfclub.com, 972-370-4653, $125)
Tripp Davis and Justin Leonard created one of Golf Magazine's Best New
Courses of 2010 at this stylish layout north of Dallas. The old school feel of the
layout overlooking Lake Lewisville is a nod to classic American courses built in
the early 20th century. For a closer look, check out the detailed hole-by-hole
sketches on the club's website.
TPC San Antonio - AT&T Oaks (tpcsanantonio.com, 210-491-5800, $159-$249)
Another of Golf Magazine's Best New Courses of 2010, the Oaks hosts the PGA
Tour's Valero Texas Open in April. Designed by Greg Norman, with consulting

(including one in the middle of the par-3 16th green) and demanding. It's only
open to guests at the adjoining 1,002-room JW Marriott that towers over the
course.

produced, Texas would be tough to beat. Just a few of the natives include Byron
Nelson, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, Lanny Wadkins, Tom Kite, Justin Leonard, and
even Golf Magazine columnist Brandel Chamblee.

Antonio. The big name layouts in those cities are good enough that the PGA Tour
stops in Texas four times a year.
MUST-PLAY COURSES
Barton Creek - Fazio Canyons (bartoncreek.com, 512-329-4653, $150-$250)
Change is coming to Golf Magazine's top-ranked public course in Texas. This
Tom Fazio design, which debuted in 2000, will be closed for three months this
summer for renovation work (all greens are being rebuilt). What won't be

Pine Dunes (pinedunes.com, 903-876-4336, $49-$79)
Never heard of this course? You're not the only one. But it's worth making the
drive two hours east of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area to play. Tucked away in
Frankston, this 2001 Jay Morrish design is nothing fancy; just a collection of
good, solid holes, although the merits of the dogleg par-5 18th are the subject of
debate. The price is right though, and you can stay in a handful of condos near
the 18th green for multiple rounds.

Fazio layout still resonates as must play thanks to plenty of elevation changes
and interesting green complexes. Not to mention an abandoned bat cave you
must carry on the par-5 18th.

BEST OF REST
Westin La Cantera Hill Country Resort - Palmer Course
(lacanteragolfclub.com, 210-558-4653, $69-$140)
If you like rollercoasters, you'll love the Resort Course layout (and the Fiesta
Texas amusement park located right next door) here in Texas Hill Country. But
the more subtle and straightforward Palmer design is the one you would likely
play more than once.
Butterfield Trail (butterfieldtrailgolf.com, 915-772-1031, $65-$80)
The standout public layout in West Texas was named a Top 10 New Course you
Can Play by Golf Magazine in 2007. Built on land in El Paso that was part of a
19th century mail delivery route, the Tom Fazio design features a number of
elevated tees, natural sand dunes and a two-acre lake that comes into play on
the closing hole of each nine.

the clubhouse may be enough to warrant a trip here. But for golfers, the solid
course is an added bonus. Located in Grapevine, north of downtown Dallas, the
course completed a renovation of all bunkers late last year.
Wolfdancer Golf Club (wolfdancergolfclub.com, 512-308-4770, $119-$149)
Opened in 2006 35 minutes southeast of Austin, this course features an initial
12-hole stretch with distinct elevation changes, notably on the severely downhill
par-3 12th hole. The remaining holes are more parkland style with the 17th and
