Welcome to BEFIB 2016
The 9th RILEM International Symposium on Fiber Reinforced Concrete –
BEFIB 2016 – will be held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on 19-21
September 2016. This great symposium is sponsored by RILEM and hosted by
the University of British Columbia (UBC). After the success of the previous
conference in this series, BEFIB 2012 in Portugal, BEFIB 2016 will continue the
aim to attract delegates from academia, industry and research institutes
involved with applied research and development in the FRC field. In doing so,
the event will provide a platform for academics and industrialists to network,
exchange ideas and gain new insights on the possibilities and challenges of
FRC.
BEFIB 2016 is intended for a world-wide audience of researchers and
practitioners with backgrounds in structural and/or materials engineering. It
includes structural and construction engineers, builders and building
consultants, construction industry personnel, academics, researchers,
students, product manufacturers, material suppliers, project managers and
contract administrators, asset managers, government infrastructure
authorities and others.

About Vancouver
Vancouver, the host city of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, is a beautiful city
being surrounded by the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Great
restaurants, lively pubs, shopping districts and reliable public transit make the
city a great tourist destination. Vancouverites are known for their friendly
nature, and Vancouver's citizens take great pride in welcoming tourists from all
around the world to visit this beautiful, safe, and clean city.

Venue
BEFIB 2016 will be held at the Pacific Gateway Hotel in Vancouver, British
Columbia, Canada. The hotel is situated close to the Vancouver International
Airport with complementary shuttle service available to hotel guests. The city is
located approximately twenty minutes from the airport. Transport is available
by skytrain, bus, or rental car from the airport. Shopping opportunities, lively
downtown restaurants and night life are popular tourist attractions.

Special Sessions
There will be three special sessions at BEFIB 2016, honoring the lifetime
research and work of three of our highly distinguished colleagues from around
the world. The sessions will be run parallel to the general session.
Professor Falkner Special Session
Professor Horst Falkner has attained his
doctorate degree in 1969 on the cracking of
reinforced concrete due to restraint stresses
induced by temperature and shrinkage. He
has been involved in the design of wide span
prepossessed concrete bridges and shells for
roofs and silos.
In the early 1970’s, Professor Falkner was a
visiting professor at the University of
Waterloo and the University of Toronto,
Canada. From 1987 to 2007, Horst was a
professor at the Technical University
of Braunschweig, Germany, concentrating on
prestressed steel fiber concrete beams. In
2005, Horst received an Honorary Doctorate
award by the University of Leipzig. Currently,
Prof. Falkner is with the Civil Engineering
Office IBF in Stuttgart, focusing on research
and providing expertise on structural
analysis.

Professor Li Special Session
Professor Victor C. Li is the E.B. Wylie Collegiate
Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at
the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His research
interest is in multifunctional concrete materials
targeted at enhancing infrastructure sustainability
and resiliency. He led the research team that
invented Engineering Cementitious Composites,
popularly known as “Bendable Concrete”. In 2012,
Professor Li was named a “Thousand Talent
Specialist” in China. Professor Li received the
Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award (2015) and the
Distinguished Faculty Award (2006) from the
University of Michigan. In 2005, he received the
Stephen S. Attwood award, the highest honor
bestowed by the College of Engineering at the
University of Michigan.
In 2004, Professor Li was honored by the Technical
University of Denmark with a “Doctor technics
honoris causa” in recognition of his “outstanding,
innovative contributions to materials research and
engineering and providing our society and the
construction industry with new, safe and sustainable
building materials”. Professor Li is a Fellow of the
American Society of Civil Engineers, the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers, the World
Innovation Forum, and the American Concrete
Institute. His research and societal impacts have
been featured in the CBS Evening News, the
Discovery Channel, the Architectural Record, the
American Ceramic Society, the Portland Cement
Association, and the Forbes Magazine.

Professor Rokugo Special Session
Professor Keitetsu Rokugo earned his Bachelor,
Master and Doctor degrees from Kyoto
University, Japan. After completing his graduate
studies, he also studied in the University of
Illinois at Urbana–Champaign from 1978 to 1979.
Then he worked as a research associate at Kyoto
University and he moved to Gifu University as an
assistant professor in 1980. He became an
associate professor in 1982, and then became a
professor in 1993. He was also a visiting scholar at
EPFL, Switzerland in 1986 for a year. From 2012 to
present, he has served as the Dean of Faculty of
Engineering, Gifu University.
He is an active member of the Japan Society of
Civil Engineers (JSCE), the Japan Concrete
Institute (JCI), the Japan Society of Material
Science (JSMS), the International Union of
Laboratories and Experts in Construction
Materials, Systems and Structures (RILEM) and
the American Concrete Institute (ACI). He
contributed to publish the State-of-the-Art Report
of the RILEM Technical Committee 208-HFC,
Subcommittee 3, “Strain Hardening Cement
Composites: Structural Design and
Performance”, as the chair of Subcommittee 3.
He was the chair of the committee on design and
construction of HPFRCC in JSCE, and he
contributed to establish “Recommendations for
Design and Construction of HPFRCC”. He also
organized the committee on design and
construction of DFRCC in JCI. He received the
Yoshida Prize from JSCE (2015), and the
Achievement Award from JCI (2006) for his
research contribution.
