Portraiture through the Ages
April 25 - August 9, 2015
Before the invention of the camera and the more recent phenomenon of social
media and the selfie, preserving an image of one’s likeness required the skills of
a trained portraitist. Developed in the Western world, where individual identity
has been esteemed since antiquity, a portrait immortalizes its sitter and unites
past and present for the viewer. While stylized profile representations of rulers
were produced in ancient Egypt, the earliest individualized portraits based
on observation were created in ancient Rome, where a tradition of naturalistic
portrait sculpture developed. During the Renaissance, the portrait became an
important record of status and position, and a significant source of livelihood
for artists. Wealthy religious and civic patrons were memorialized in works that
preserved their appearance, character, personality, accomplishments, and times
for posterity. Considered singly or collectively, portraiture from the 15th century
through the present reveals the political, military, economic, social, and cultural
history of Europe, and beginning in the 18th century of America as well.
While conveying physical appearance, portraits also capture a sitter’s inner essence,
temperament, interests, and even mood, creating a visual biography that relays a
wealth of information not discerned from a spontaneous snapshot or selfie. Often
produced on commission, the portrait was a contract between the sitter and artist,
reflecting the patron’s vision of himself, distilled through the eye and hand of the
artist. As early as the Renaissance, some artists also created self-portraits (at times
as a form of advertisement) and portraits of family and friends, a trend that gained
prominence through the 19th century as artists turned to the world around them
for their subjects.
Drawn from the Museum’s Permanent Collection, Before Selfies presents a rich
history of portraiture from the 16th century to the present day. Self-portraits and
images of fellow artists, family, and friends reveal the artist’s most intimate world,
while images of public figures, anonymous sitters, and character types describe
our collective history and experience. In these works, we discern changing
concepts of beauty, diverse approaches to depicting male and female subjects that
reflect underlying gender roles, and commentary on the human condition in the
20th century. The evolution of portraiture presented here also reveals a shift from
homage of venerable individuals to a celebration of the unique qualities within
each of us.
This exhibition is sponsored in part by Astoria Bank.

It is for the artist...in portrait painting to put on canvas something more than the face
the model wears for that one day; to paint the man, in short, as well as his features.
