For the old timers- “The Good Ole Days”
We true prime-timers were here before
the Pill, the population explosion and
disposable diapers. We were here before
we were called “senior citizens.”
We were here before TV, penicillin, polio
shots, antibiotics and open-heart surgery.
Before frozen food, nylon, Xerox, radar,
fluorescent lights, credit cards, ballpoint
pens, Frisbees and fiber optics.
For us, time-sharing meant togetherness,
not computers or condos. Coeds never
wore jeans. Girls wore Peter Pan collars. We
were here before panty hose and drip-dry
clothes, before icemakers and dishwashers,
clothes dryers, freezers and electric
blankets. Before men wore long hair and
earrings and before women wore tuxedos.
We were here before Ann Landers,
Grandma Moses and the Kinsey Report.
We were here before facelifts, tummy tucks,
liposuction and hair transplants. We
thought cleavage was what butchers did.
We were here before sex changes. Before
Viagra. We just made do with what we had.
We were here before computers. A mouse
pad was where mice hung out. To log-on
was to add wood to fire. A chip was a piece
of wood. Hardware meant hardware, and
software wasn’t even a word. A hard drive
was a long, grueling journey. A CD was
something you invested in. Windows were
for looking out of. A virus was a flu bug
that people caught. Backing up was what
you hoped never happened to your toilet,
especially when you had company.
We were here before vitamins, Jeeps, pizza,
Cheerios, instant coffee, decaffeinated
anything, light anything and McDonald’s.
We thought fast food was what you ate
during Lent. If we had been asked to
explain VCR, CIA, NATO, UFO, PMS, GNP,
MBA, BMW, SDI, NFL, PSA and ATM, we’d
have said “alphabet soup.”
We prime-timers are a hardy bunch when
you think of how our world has changed,
all we have learned and the adjustments we
have made. I’m pretty proud of us.

fax, leave a message on my answering
machine or call me on my cell phone. If I
don’t answer, tell my voicemail you called
– after the beep, leave your name, your
number and a brief message, and I’ll get
back to you as soon as I can. If you need me
quickly, call my pager. If all else fails, come
on over to my house, take a seat in one of
the rockers on my porch and we’ll visit the
old-fashioned way – face to face and in
person – and let the rest of the world go by.

Losing your Marbles
A few weeks ago, I was shuffling toward the
kitchen, with a steaming cup of coffee in one hand
and the morning paper in the other. What began
as a typical Saturday morning turned into one
of those lessons that life seems to hand you from
time to time.
---Let me tell you about it.
I turned the volume up on my radio in order to
listen to a Saturday morning talk show featuring a
story about “a thousand marbles.”
-I was intrigued and sat down to listen to what he
had to say. “Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you’re
busy with your job. I’m sure they pay you well but
it’s a shame you have to be away from home and
your family so much. Hard to believe a young
fellow should have to work sixty or seventy hours
a week to make ends meet. Too bad you missed
your daughter’s dance recital. “ He continued, “Let
me tell you something Tom, something that has
helped me keep a good perspective on my own priorities.” And that’s when he began to explain his
theory of a “thousand marbles.”
“You see, I sat down one day and did a little arithmetic.
The average person lives about 75 years. I know,
some live more and some live less, but on average,
folks live about 75 years.” “Now then, I multiplied
75 times 52 and I came up with 3900 which is the
number of Saturdays that the average person has
in their entire lifetime.”
“Now stick with me Tom, I’m getting to the important part.
It took me until I was 25 years old to think about
all this in any detail”, he went on, “and by that
time I had lived through over twenty-eight hundred Saturdays. “I got to thinking that if I lived to
be 75, I only had about a thousand of them left to
enjoy. “So I went to a toy store and bought every
single marble they had. I ended up having to visit
three toy stores to round-up 1000 marbles. “I took
them home and put them inside of a large, clear
plastic container right here in my workshop next
to the radio.
------Every Saturday since then, I have taken one
marble out and thrown it away.
“I found that by watching the marbles diminish,
I focused more on the really important things in
life. There is nothing like watching your time here
on this earth run out to help get your priorities
straight.
“Now let me tell you one last thing before I
sign-off with you and take my lovely wife out for
breakfast.
This morning, I took the very last marble out of
the container. I figure if I make it until next Saturday then God has blessed me with a little extra
time to be with my loved ones......
“It was nice to talk to you Tom, I hope you spend
more time with your loved ones, and I hope to
meet you again someday. Have a good morning!”
You could have heard a pin drop when he finished.
Even the show’s moderator didn’t have anything
to say for a few moments. I guess he gave us all a
lot to think about. I had planned to do some work
that morning, then go to the gym.
Instead, I went upstairs and woke my wife up with

¥ On Nov. 12, 1864, Union Gen. William T. Sherman orders the business district of Atlanta destroyed before he embarks on his famous March to
the Sea through Georgia to prevent the Confederates from recovering anything once the Yankees

touchdowns in nine seconds to beat the New York

¥ On Nov. 18, 1987, a fire in a London subway station kills 30 commuters and injures scores of others. At the King’s Cross station in London, people

A PALATIAL
RESIDENCE

In October 1898,
Edwin Ohl’s
(1850-1922)
palatial residence
on Lincoln Ave.
was being constructed, a model of elegance and beauty. Completed in
1899 it was one of the finest residences in New Castle. Constructed of
red pressed brick the home contained 14 rooms exclusive of halls and
the attic. The lot fronted 70 feet on Lincoln Avenue, extending back
235 feet on East Street with a width of 90 feet at the rear. At that time
Ohl served as the manager of the New Castle office of Republic Iron
and Steel. He later became president of United Iron and Steel (1906),
president of New Castle Portland Cement Company (1908) and a
director of the First National Bank. About 1912 Ohl moved to
Pittsburgh where he was associated with the American Roller Bearing
Company, director of the Hanna Furnace company, the New Castle
Rubber Company and the Keystone National Bank of Pittsburgh. On
June 16, 1915 the residence on Lincoln Avenue was sold to James F.
Haney, founder of Haney Furniture Company in New Castle. Part of
the property deal, a year in the making, involved the exchange of a 12
suite apartment building owned by James Haney in Pittsburgh, valued
at $65,000. Ohl’s wife, Catherine was an active member of the
Anti-Suffrage movement. While she may not have believed that
women should have held the right to vote, she apparently had no
problem with a female owning property, including herself. Part of the
deal required that Haney deed the apartments to her. Haney paid an
additional $20,000 cash to close the deal. At the time of the sale, the
home was being occupied by Alex Crawford Hoyt who had leased it
pending the completion of his residence on Leasure Avenue. Haney
was to take possesion October 1, 1915.
The Haneys owned the property for a number of years until it was sold
in the 1930’s. It became Smith Nursing Home and subsequently
Smith - Bishop Nursing Home. Today it serves as a four-unit
apartment building.

Q: I love MTV’s original comedy “Awkward.” I missed some
episodes of season two. Is it on DVD yet? Also, where there be

A: You’re in luck on both counts. Aside from being able to
watch full episodes on hulu.com and mtv.com, seasons one
and two are available on DVD. The show has been granted
a super-size season three, which will consist of 20 episodes
instead of the previous 12 episodes each of the previous two
seasons. Look for season three to premiere in summer 2013.

Q: I just heard about the death of one of my favorite directors,
Tony Scott. I couldn’t find any information on the definite
cause or reason for his death. Do you know what happened? -Felix S., Vancouver, British Columbia
A: The results of Tony’s autopsy were recently released, with
the cause of death being multiple blunt-force injuries, which
were sustained when he jumped off a Los Angeles bridge on
Aug. 19. The official ruling is suicide, as no foul play was suspected or discovered. There was also no evidence of an inoperable brain tumor -- as some sources were citing as the reason
he killed himself -- putting to rest those rumors that his family
vehemently denied from the get-go.
Tony, who was 68 at the time of his death, had recently announced his intent to develop a “Top Gun” sequel, and was
with Tom Cruise just days prior to his death scouting locations
for the movie. There is no word yet on whether the movie will
be made without Tony.

Q: “Assassin’s Creed” is one of my favorite video games, and
my roommate heard that it’s going to be made into a movie. Is
that true? -- Douglas W., via e-mail
A: Development of a big-screen version of the popular video
game is moving forward, with Michael Fassbender set to star
as Desmond Miles, a man who comes from a long line of assassins but tries to lie low and maintain a more common lifestyle
as a bartender. Since it’s still early in the development process,
there’s no word on co-stars or a release date. However, I can
tell you that it will be shot in 3-D.

who was one of the “Ice Road Truckers” on the History Channel last year. We’re hoping she didn’t crash. -- Bonnie and

A: Lisa Kelly is alive and well, and taking a year off. Producer
Thom Beers told a group of reporters: “We offered her a
contract to return, and she chose not to. (We’d) love to have
her, (but) she’s taking a year off. The thing we liked about her
more than anyone else -- she’s the one person of them all who
showed real fear. I wish her luck, and I wish she was back.”
