Working from the Heart
Latin for “invincible” Invicta was founded in 1837 in La Chaux-de-fonds,
Switzerland by Raphael Picard, who had the radical notion that fine
Swiss timepieces could be offered at modest prices. For more than a
century, the assiduous little company created manual and automatic
winding timepieces of exceptional design and construction. Like many
Swiss names of its day, the brand all but disappeared during the quartz
invasion of the early ‘70s.
In 1991, descendants of the Invicta family re-established the brand

Analog-digital display (ana-digi): A watch
that shows the time using hour and minute
hands (analog display) as well as by numbers
(a digital display).
Aperture (dial window): A small opening
in a dial through which information, such as
the day of the week, is displayed.
Atmosphere: one atmosphere (ATM)
equals 10 meters of water pressure and indicates the degree of water resistance.
Automatic mechanical movement:
A mechanical movement that winds itself
by transmitting the motion of the wearer’s
wrist to a rotor mechanism that tightens the
coiled mainspring.
Balance: Moving part, usually circular, oscillating about its axis of rotation. The hairspring coupled to it makes it swing to and
fro, dividing time into exactly equal parts.
Each of the to-and-fro movements of the
balance (“tick-tack”) is called an “oscillation”.
One oscillation is composed of two vibrations.
Bezel: The bezel is the topmost ring of the
watch, surrounding the dial of the watch. A
bezel may be fixed or in the case of a diver’s
watch, rotating. It can either be plain (usually
fixed) or can be marked with, for example
a 0-60 minute scale in the case of divers’
watches. Older rotating bezels were usually
bi-directional, modern diving watches are
equipped with a unidirectional bezel.
Big date: This complication consists of two
wheels, with two digits rotating every day to
show the date. This differs from a standard
date complication, which has one wheel
numbered 1 – 31.
Bracelet: Flexible metal watchband constructed of links which wrap around the
wrist and attach to the case. Made of steel,
gold, platinum, or other metallic element.
Cabochon: A small polished gemstone, usually a decorative element on a crown.
Case: The container housing the movement
of the watch and protecting it against dust,
moisture, jarring and other hazards. Usually
consists of the bezel, the case middle, and
the case back.
Case back: The bottom of a watch case that
can be opened for access to the movement.
Case middle: The edge of the case between
the bezel and case back where inside the
movement is fitted. Also called the case band.
Chronometer: A watch that has been
certified by the Controle Officiel Suisse des
Chronometres (COSC) may be referred to
as a Chronometer. The certification indicates that the watch has passed a test that
measures accuracy to within -4 seconds/day
to +6 seconds/day.
Chronograph: A watch that is capable of
measuring smaller intervals of time (seconds
to hours) in addition to keeping the time of
day. This measure may be seen as a seconds
hand or within a smaller sub-dial on the dial,
depending on the watch, and can often be
stopped or started using the watch’s pusher.
In simplest terms, a chronograph complication functions as a stopwatch.
Clasp: The piece of hardware which is
used to secure the bracelet or strap to the
wrist. Different clasps include jewelers clasp,
deployment clasp, dual-deployment and pushbutton dual-deployment.
Complication: Watch functions beyond
telling time, such as date, big date, power
reserve indicator, or moon phase.
COSC Certified: Indicates that the timepiece has been certified by the Controle
Officiel Suisse des Chronometres.
Crystal: The transparent cover that protects
the watch dial. Typical materials include mineral, sapphire, and sapphire-coated.
Crown: A knob on the outside of the case
that is used to manually wind the watch or
set the time.
Decorated Movement: Some watch movements come highly decorated, for example
with Geneva Stripes and blued screws. Whilst
decoration may not improve function, it
often indicates a degree of hand assembly/
finishing and an attention to detail in the
construction of a watch. Some watches show
off the decorated movement through the use
of a display back.
Dial: The part of a watch that contains the
essential time-keeping markings.
Digital watch: Shows the time with digits
instead of with hands. Digital watches do not
necessarily have to be electronic, but almost
all are.
Exhibition caseback: Enables viewing of
the movement though an open case back,
protected by a crystal.
Grand sonnerie: Also known as grand
strike, this traditional movement automatically sounds on quarter hours with an hour
repeater, enabling one to tell time without
looking at the watch.
Hack/Hacking: Describes the feature of a
movement whereby the seconds hand can
be stopped by pulling the crown for exact
setting of the time. Originally a military term
for this feature.
Indicator: The part of a dial that marks the
time, such as numerals, roman numerals,
sticks, or other. May also be called markers.
Hand-applied indicators are a mark of high
quality watch-making.
Jewel: In the mechanical watch and some
quartz watches, jewels (usually made from
synthetic ruby) are used as bearings for
those parts of the movement subject to
constant motion. They are not valuable at all
in the monetary sense but they are valuable in aiding the precise running of a watch
over a long period and reducing wear. It is a
fallacy that the more jewels the better the
watch. A basic handwound mechanical usually
comprises 17 jewels which in the main is
the optimum count. Automatics may require
more for the winding mechanism itself.
Lug: The part of the watch case where the
strap or bracelet is attached.
Marker: Another term for indicator
Mechanical movement: The oldest technology in watch making, a mechanical movement keeps time by releasing energy from
a wound spring through a set of gears (the
wheel train) and an escapement. Mechanical
movements must be wound by hand periodically, usually every 36 – 40 hours. While not
considered the most accurate movement
available, its long tradition, precise craftsmanship, and aesthetic appeal keep it popular
with watch collectors.
Mechanical automatic movement: See

Minute repeater: A function that sounds
hours, quarters and minutes as requested by
activating a pusher, or a slide built into the
watch case.
Moonphase complication: shows the
phase of the moon within a subdial such as
Full Moon, Half Moon, Quarter Moon, etc.
Power reserve indicator: Displays the
length of time a watch will continue running
based on the movement’s residual winding of
its mainspring. In quartz and digital watches,
this can also refer to the amount of energy
left in the battery.
Pusher: Buttons or knobs on the watch case
that are used to set or activate complications, such as chronographs. Screw-down
pushers are used for increased water resistance.
Quartz movement: Considered highly
accurate, quartz movements are powered
by quartz crystals. Due to their ability to be
easily mass produced and their precision,
quartz movements are fairly popular.
Repeater: A complex watch mechanism
that sounds hours, quarter hours, or minutes
or repeats them on request by activating a
pusher, or a slide built into the watch case. It
was first designed to help the wearer to tell
the time in the dark.
Sapphire crystal: With a hardness of 9 on
the Mohs’ scale, this mineral creates a highly
scratch-resistant crystal but is more susceptible to shattering than softer materials such
as glass.
Sapphire-coated crystal: Sapphire coating
applied to a different mineral crystal. Adds
durability to the crystal.
Screw-down: Used to increase waterresistance, a screw-down crown, pushers,
and case back create a watertight seal when
activated. Crown and pushers must be unscrewed to be operational in their function.
Stainless steel: With its anti-corrosive
properties and inherent strength, stainless
steel is often used for cases and bracelets.
Units of measurement for stainless steel are
309L or 316L. The higher the L number, the
more corrosion-resistant the steel.

Swiss made: For a watch to be considered
Swiss made, the movement must be a Swiss
Movement, more than 50% of the watch’s
overall value must consist of Swiss parts, the
movement must be assembled and cased in
Switzerland, and final inspection and quality
control must completed in Switzerland.
Titanium: A hypo-allergenic metallic element that is three times lighter than stainless
steel with more tensile strength than stainless steel. It is however a softer compound
and greater care should be taken by the
wearer as it will scratch more easily than
stainless steel.
Water resistance: The watch is constructed in such as way that it is able to resist penetration by water. There are varying degrees
of water resistance. While some watches can
withstand some moisture or brief submersion in water, others are constructed to
withstand submersion to specified depths.
Water resistance to 50 can be worn swimming. Water resistance to 100 or 150 is suitable for snorkeling. Water resistance to 200
meters is the minimum standard for a dive
watch. Water resistance is only a guideline.
No watch should be considered waterproof.
Water resistance is also measure in atmospheres or ATM.
