With Muscle Power, Lexington Sale Up 7.7 Percent

LEXINGTON, Ky–W ith the offspring of first-crop stallion
Muscle Hill selling through the roof, the opening night of the
Lexington Selected yearling sale was a major success.
Exactly 100 horses went through the ring, selling for an
average of $85,590, which represented a 7.7 percent increase over last year's Opening Night.
Much of that had to
do with Muscle Hill. Sixteen of his offspring
were sold, bringing in a
total of $2,010,000 or
an average of $125,625
per yearling. Muscle Hill
also had the
sale-topper and the runner-up. A Muscle Hill
colt named Monarch

Muscle Hill filly was
next. Named Deepdish, she was bought by agent Robert
Lindstrom for $320,000. Both were consigned by Hunterton
Sales Agency. Hunteron has now had the sale topper five
years straight.
Thanks in large part to Muscle Hill, it was a resurgent
night for New Jersey breds. The 37 that were sold brought a
combined $3,769,000.
Because of an undercurrent of uncertainty surrounding the
industry's future, particularly in Ontario, no one knew quite
to expect before Hip No. 1 entered the ring last night. A
rocky opening night would not have been a surprise.
"W e had a real good group of horses," noted Sales Manager Randy Manges. "I thought we'd do well because of the
group of horses we had. But it's like anything else; I'm always cautious in this economy, plus with Ontario and all the
things that are happening in business, you never know."
The sale started slowly and the first two Muscle Hills to
sell did not do well, selling for $12,000 and $20,000. But
things started to heat up when Finnish buyer Martti
Ala-Seppala paid $135,000 for Ivory Pearl, a Muscle Hill
filly.
European participation was very strong and also helped
carry the sale. The two most expensive horses sold both
went to Europeans.
"I did expect that [the Europeans to be strong]," Manges
said. "The one positive thing is that their sales ended last
week, so they were able to come over. W e hit it about every
third year. I think it always helps. If they have to stay there
to sell horses or to buy, then some of them won't come."
The sale topper was bought by Daniel Reden of the
Swedish stable Brixton Medical AB. He said the horse will
race in the U.S. and will likely be trained by Jimmy Takter.
"Everything was perfect with this horse," Reden said, "I
liked the engines on the horse. W e had decided we wanted
him and that we were going to do our best to get him. W e
want to race him here because there is great money for
young horses in the U.S. It is a great sport here and we
want to be a part of it."
Foreigners were also involved in the third and fourth
highest priced horses, both bought by trainer Mark Harder.
He purchased both for Australian owner Emilio Rosati.
As for the Canadian buyers, they didn't seem to be gun
shy despite the on-going problems in Ontario. Canadians
Dustin Jones, Casie Coleman, Carl Jamieson, Jeff Gillis,
Tony O'Sullivan and Per Henriksen all bought horses.
Jones purchased two that cost $100,000 or more.
"I would agree; the Canadians were very strong," Manges
said. "But they've always been strong. The problem is with
Ontario-breds. Here, they're buying in the U.S. market, and
they've always been strong here."
As expected, the Cancelliere Brothers made their presence felt in a big way. W hile they didn't buy the sale topper

as they did a year earlier in Harrisburg when paying
$825,000 for Detour Hanover, they will go home with four
horses from Opening Night, having paid a total of $630,000
for their quartet.
After it was over, a number of people were found with big
smiles plastered on their faces, including Steve Stewart, the
co-owner of Hunterton Farm.
"It's kind of like validation of your ability when you have so
many people bid on your horses," Stewart said. "It was very
rewarding and obviously the money is nice, too. I don't like
to try to guess about these things because when you start
saying "I think this or I think that" then you can end up being
disappointed, I was worried about being disappointed tonight because everything was so positive coming into the
sale."
Things will calm down tonight for the second session, but
it remains to be seen how much. The momentum will be
strong, perhaps for the rest of the week."

A Muscle Hill Breaks The Bank
Remember this name: Deyrolle. The colt was the first
Muscle Hill sold at a US yearling sale that broke the bank.
On behalf of Brittany Farms, Myron Bell bought the colt for
$250,000. Out of Breeders Crown winner Danae, she was
consigned and raised at Cane Run Farm. Tony Alagna will
train the horse. Alagna and Brittany connected at this same
sale last year when buying Captaintreacherous.
W e’re happy to buy such a wonderful colt,” Bell said.
“Tony Alagna will train him for our group ands we’re looking
forward to racing next summer. He’s a great individual,
moved great in the paddock, has a very good pedigree. W e
have a lot of confidence in Mr Alagna. He’s had a great year
and continued success to him and his crew.”
Bought By Europeans, Muscle Hill Filly Will Race in U.S.
The Muscle Hill filly Ivory Pearl was purchased for
$135,000 by Finnish owner Martti Ala-Seppala, but isn’t
going anywhere, Ala-Seppala said the filly will race in the
U.S.
“W hy? Because this is where all the big stakes are,” said
the owner, who raced only a handful of horses in the U.S.
He did not know yet who would train the filly.
W hen asked what the Europeans think of Muscle Hill as a
sire, he said: “I think its very mixed. Those who have seen
him race think very highly of him. There are also quite a
few who think that first Muscles Yankee must show that he
can produce a son who can be a good sire before they
believe. Europeans are that way. First they want to see and
then they believe. Me, I love Muscle Hill. This filly has the
capability of trotting at all speeds with fluent action and is
capable of trotting on the turns without breaking stride. She
was so athletic.”
Cancelliere Brothers Take Home Rock N Roll Heaven’s
Brother

war on Bigrisk, a half-brother to
Rock N Roll Heaven who sold for
$450,000 to trainer Bruce
Saunders and the Bellino family.
This time the Bellino contingent
was quite, which allowed Team
Cancelliere to get this one for the
relatively low price of $120,000. It
was the Cancelliere Brothers’ first
purchase of the night.

A Taste for Deepdish
Agent Robert Lindstrom stepped up to the plate and
purchased Deepdish for a Swedish owner for $320,000.
The trotting filly gas an impeccable pedigree as she is by
Muscle Hill out of Pizza Dolce. Pizza Dolce is the dam of
Bella Dolce ($730,384 in earnings) and Miss Paris
($671,390 in earnings) and made $668,824 on the racetrack herself.
Lindstrom said the filly will race in the U.S. He did not
disclose who would train her.
“W e paid a little bit more than we expected to pay,”
Lindstrom said. “W e had settled on $300,000 but it was
close. W e decided to go over $300,000 because some of
the others we expected to go for a little less we were the
underbidder on. A couple of others who looked good went
higher than we expected so we knew we’d have to go a
little higher. W e loved the breeding and the conformation
and the way that she moved.”
W hen asked why the horse would race in the US as
opposed to Europe, he replied: “Her sisters have done so
good over here that I think she will race very good as 2year-old in big races. She was bred by a very good
breeder that we like.”

Sharia Don’t Like It, but Harder Did
Rock The Casbah, a Rocknroll Hanover full-brother to
Breeders Crown champion Put On a Show, will soon join the
shedrow of Mark Harder after the New Zealand-born trainer
went to a session-topping $300,000 for the handsome
brown youngster. But he might well find himself in Australia
if all things go to plan. Harder, standing out back in the rear
walking ring, purchased the colt on behalf of the Australia-based owner Emilio Rosati, and drew out the road map
shortly after signing the winning slip. "He'll stay here for a
couple of years and hopefully do some good, then we'll take
him home and, hopefully, stand him at stud," explained
Harder, who reportedly outlasted Put On a Show's co-owner
Richard Young to secure the May 3-foaled colt.
The colt, consigned by Kentuckiana Farms as hip 43,
certainly has a stallion's pedigree. He's a son of W orld
Champion Stienam's Place (Artsplace), dam of, among
others, the $2.2 million earner Put On a Show, as well as
champion Showherthemoney (Cam's Card Shark) ($871k).
"He's very much like the Rocknroll Hanovers," said
Harder. "He's a big, strong horse--very correct--and from a
great family. I'm a little concerned he's a later foal, but we
liked him a lot."
Asked if he thought he'd have to go to $300,000, Harder
replied, "Nah, I thought he'd go somewhere around the
$200,000 mark. But that's the owner--he's aggressive, and
he really wanted him."
It isn't the first time Rosati has made his mark at auction in
North America. A few years ago, he paid $300,000 for a
Rocknroll Hanover half-sister to Well
Said at Harrisburg.
Rosati represents Australia's version of the American
dream. The Italian expatriate moved to Australia in 1961 at
the age of 16 and, after a modest beginning as a carpenter,
built himself into a construction magnate. He is a principal of
Form 700, one of Australia's leading construction companies.
The Harder They Fall...
Trainer Mark Harder wasn't resting on his laurels after
buying hip 43 for $300,000. He was soon back in action for
hip 80, a Cantab Hall filly who was hammered down for
$280,000. Harder was buying for Emilio Rosati, the Australian-based owner who also acquired the standout Rocknroll
Hanover colt that sold a few hours earlier.
Offered from the draft of Preferred Equine Marketing, the
filly is the first foal from stakes-winning trotter Lunar Dream
On (Muscle Yankee) ($150k), a half-sister to 3yo Trotting
Colt of the Year Victory Dream (Valley Victory) and multiple
stakes winner Dream Valley Om (Valley Victory ($590k).
Harder said that the filly essentially represented Plan A,
while his earlier purchase, the Rocknroll Hanover colt, was
Plan B. "At the beginning of the sale we thought we just
wanted a trotting filly, but then we got into the colts, as well,"
laughed Harder. "But this is originally what [Rosati]
wanted--a trotting filly."
He said the filly checked all his boxes. "As much as I know
about trotters, I thought she was amazing," he said. "Great
family, beautiful mover, great video."
Just as with the Rocknroll Hanover colt, Harder said the
filly would eventually likely wind up in Australia. "She stay
here and race a few years, then she'll go there and he'll
breed her down there," he said.
Harder was on the phone with Rosati during the bidding,
and said he wasn't surprised the owner proved gamest for
the filly. "He was here a couple years ago and was the
underbidder on Simply Business-- $340,000, $360,000,
something like that--and after the sale, he was so mad at
himself," said Harder. "He said, ‘I've never been the underbidder on a horse before.'"
Last year, Simply Business poured ample salt on the
wound by winning the $1 million Metro Pace at Mohawk.
W hile Rosati's newest purchases comprise the entirety of
his North American stable, he owns well over 50 head in
Australia.
"He absolutely loves the business," said Harder. "He's a
great guy--he runs a great company and is a self-made
man."
Asked about his thoughts about opening night, Harder
opined, "It's the first night of Lexington, and it's a little
crazy. W e're still racing for a lot of money right now; let's
hope we continue to."
Couple of Homeruns for Preferred...
It was a fine night of selling for Preferred Equine, who
consigned the $280,000 Cantab Hall--Lunar Dream On filly,
in addition to other standouts including hip 75, a Rocknroll
Hanover colt out of the brilliant $2.9 million earner Darlin's
Delight who went to John Cancelliere for $230,000.
Preferred's Dave Reid said he was happy with the night's
trade. "She was a lovely filly," Reid said of the Cantab Hall.
"She had very good conformation, was very well-balanced,
and she got a lot of interest. She was probably one of the
better-bred fillies in the sale, and we had high expectations.
I'm very happy with where she went to."
Of the Rocknroll Hanover colt out of Darlin's Delight, he
added, "That was her first foal, and so we were very happy
with $230,000. [Physically], he had a good blend between
the mother and father. Overall, we are very pleased."
Ward Gets In On the Standardbred Action...
W esley W ard is a Thoroughbred trainer who is best
known for his success with young horses, including Sweet
Shirley Mae, a promising young 2-year-old filly who recently finished second in the Grade 1 Spinaway S., the
most important race for juvenile fillies at prestigious
Saratoga Race Course. A$60,000 yearling, Sweet Shirley
Mae is owned by Ice W ine Stable, a collective of Standardbred principals including Preferred Equine’s Dave Reid and
members of the Antonacci family, and could be headed to
Santa Anita Park in California for the Breeders’ Cup. The
late Geoffrey Stein was also a member of Ice W ine Stable.
Last night, Ward got in on the Standardbred action for the
first time when Frank Antonacci purchased hip 94, a Muscle Yankee colt named Navigator Hanover, on his behalf for

W ard and Ice W ine celebrated their latest stakes winner
on Sept. 15, when Gentlemans Code, a stakes-placed
juvenile last season, annexed his first stakes victory in the
Thomas Clifton S. at Penn National.
To Dream On Tops Thursday Red Mile Card
LEXINGTON, Ky.–A few hours before he looks for the
next To Dream on Night 2 of the Lexington Selected Sale,
trainer Jimmy Takter will most likely be making a trip to the
winner’s circle across town ast The Red Mile.
To Dream On (Conway Hall), purchased by Takter at last
year’s Harrisburg Sale for $200,000, will be a prohibitive
favorite in this afternoon’s fifth race, a $98,100 division of
the International Stallion Stakes. She has lost just once in
her seven-race career, when beaten by Bee A Magician in
the Peaceful W ay at Mohawk.
W ith no Bee A Magician to worry about in this field, she
should win in a cakewalk.
There are three divisions of the International Stallion
Stakes on the card and the last should be the most competitive. It features a rematch between Aspidistra Hanover
(Donato Hanover) and Upfrontluckycarol (Andover Hall),
the two Hanover-breds who finished in a dead-heat for the
win a week earlier in the Bluegrass and Frau Blucher
(Broadway Hall), also a Bluegrass winner.
“I was really happy with that race (in the Bluegrass),”
trainer Paul Kelley said of Aspidistra Hanover’s performance. “She was coming off a two-week layoff, as were a
lot of the fillies. Even though she’s not a big filly, The Meadows isn’t really her type of track. For whatever reason, I
don’t know if it’s the turns are just a little flat or something at
The Meadows, she just struggles over that track a little bit. “
Market Share to Return in Late Closer at Red
Mile

Freehold, NJ --- Market Share’s road to the Breeders Crown
will go through Lexington this weekend, but not in Sunday’s
Kentucky Futurity. Market Share, who is ranked No. 4 in the
sport’s current Top 10 poll, is not eligible to the Futurity, so
he will compete in a late closer for 3-year-old male trotters
on Saturday at The Red Mile.
The Kentucky Futurity, the final jewel in the Trotting Triple
Crown, is contested in heats, which requires a horse to win
twice to be declared the champion. Market Share won the
Triple Crown’s second jewel, the Hambletonian Stakes, in
August; Archangel captured the first leg, the Yonkers Trot,
in July.
Horses not eligible to the Futurity can be supplemented
to the race for a payment of $62,700.
Market Share’s start on Saturday will be a tune up for the
upcoming Breeders Crown at Woodbine Racetrack in
Toronto. Eliminations, if necessary, for the Breeders Crown
3-year-old colt trot are scheduled for Oct. 20 and the
$500,000 final is Oct. 27.
“If we were eligible, we would be there, but we’re not
eligible so it gave me the option not to be,” said Linda
Toscano, who trains Market Share for owners Richard
Gutnick, TLP Stable and W illiam Augustine. “I know I’m
probably not popular. I’m a hundred percent in awe of the
Standardbred racehorses because they are capable of
going those heats, but when you’re trying to keep one
sharp, it’s hard on them.
“Market Share started in April and he’s got a long year
ahead of him. He’s done everything I’ve asked him to do.
I’m really trying to focus on the Breeders Crown as our next
goal, if that’s at all possible. That’s certainly what we’re
going to aim towards.”
A son of Revenue S-Classical Flirt, Market Share has
won seven of 15 races this year and $1.76 million. He has
12 career victories in 20 starts, with earnings of $1.79
million.
Since finishing third in the Yonkers Trot on July 7, Market
Share has won four of seven races and finished no worse
than second in the other three. During that span, Market
Share and driver Tim Tetrick won the $1.5 million
Hambletonian, the $1.03 million Canadian Trotting Classic
and the $350,000 Zweig Memorial and finished second in
the $500,000 Colonial Trot.
Market Share was unbeaten in five starts as a 2-year-old,
all at half-mile-oval Freehold Raceway. Toscano entered
the season uncertain how the colt would fare when asked
to compete on the larger tracks.
“It just goes to show you what can happen when a horse
gets brave and confident,” Toscano said. “He was always a
sound horse, he’s always been a good-gaited horse, and all
of a sudden he figured out what to do.
“I always knew he had a great work ethic, I wasn’t sure
he’d be able to pick it up on the mile track. Once he got the
taste of it and figured out what we wanted, he’s gotten
stronger and stronger. He’s a classic example of what can
happen when a horse gets real brave. He’s always been a
fun horse to have around the barn, and to watch what he’s
been able to do, I think Timmy and I are both in awe.”
Toscano also trains 4-year-old male trotter Chapter
Seven, who will be racing Sunday in the Allerage Farm
Open Trot at The Red Mile. Chapter Seven is the No.
2-ranked horse in the sport, behind 3-year-old filly trotter
Check Me Out.

“He’s just a great horse,”
Toscano said. “He loves to
chase a horse down, so he
was fortunate (Sunday) that
he got to do what he loves
to do. He very rarely disappoints when he gets a target
M arket Share at the Red M ile to chase down in the
stretch.”
Chapter Seven has won five of seven races this year and
finished second twice, earning $560,225. His wins include
the $201,700 Titan Cup, the $150,000 Maxie Lee Invitational
and the $250,000 Nat Ray at the Meadowlands, where he
equaled the fastest mile ever (1:50.1) for a trotter on a mile
racetrack.
For his career, Chapter Seven has won 17 of 25 races and
earned $1.49 million. He is owned by Gutnick, Southwind
Farm and J&T Silva Stables.
“He’s a special horse,” Toscano said. “It’s hard to know
(how he will do in the Allerage). He’s going to be a hair
tighter. He thrived here last year. I’m hoping he comes out
and does a good job.”
Toscano said no decisions have been made whether to
race Chapter Seven and Market Share in 2013.
“There are no plans whatsoever for either of those horses;
we’re going to let the horses tell us what to do,” she said.
“As it stands, everything is in the air. The horses should tell
us as we finish the season.”

Kentucky Horse Racing Commission Must Do
Right Thing
I’m not going to waste too many words arguing that
Odds On Equuleus never should have been disqualified
Saturday night at The Red Mile after crossing the wire first
in the Bluegrass Stakes. You know that. I know that. Driver
John Campbell knows that. Trainer Robin Schadt knows
that. The only three people on the planet who disagree are
the three judges behind what is arguably the worst DQ in
the history of the sport.

I’m not even going to tear into the judges. It’s safe to
assume they are competent, hard-working individuals who
try to do the right thing. The just made a mistake, a big one.
It happens.
Because anyone who wagered on Odds On Equuleus,
including at least one bridgejumper, will never get paid the
money rightfully due to them, the harm done by the disqualification can never fully be undone. But the judges’ decision
can be reversed by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, which means that Schadt, Campbell, Odds On
Equuleus and owner Odds On Racing can still get a win
that was robbed from them.
The connections did the right thing, lodging an appeal
with the state’s racing commission. Their fate now rests
with that body.
Racing commissions rarely overturn DQ’s. They don’t

want to embarrass their officials and they have a hard time
overturning what is simply a judgment call. But this one
should be different. W hen something is this obvious (Odds
On Equuleus and Campbell did absolutely nothing wrong),
the commission just can’t look the other way. It has a responsibility to do the right thing and give the race back to
the rightful winner.
The Odds On team can be heartened by the fact that this
commission seems to take its job seriously, which wasn’t
always the case with its predecessors. W hen the Churchill
Downs stewards failed miserably by allowing Life At Ten to
run in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup the KHRC knew it couldn’t
look the other way. W hile the bettors who lost millions wagering on a horse that was unfit to run never got their money
back, the commission investigated and eventually fired head
steward John Veitch, who ignored warnings that there was
something wrong with the mare. It’s also been pro-active
when it comes to the overabundance of legal race day
medications trainers use and is in the process of banning
Lasix. W hile you don’t have to agree with that it does show
that this is not a commission going through the motions.
They don’t need to fire these judges. And there’s nothing
they can do for the bettors. They do need to swoop in an
correct a bad mistake that was made. If the commission
cares about fairness, the integrity of the sport and getting a
bad call right, this DQ will be overturned.

the lead past a quick opening quarter of 26.3, rated the half
(28.1), faced no serious pressure while kicking clear turning
for home and was a handy 2-1/4 length winner in 1:50.
Ticket To Rock (Andrew McCarthy) left to the front, yielded
to the winner past the quarter, chased from the pocket
throughout and dug in through the lane to hold that position
over Feeling You (Tyler Buter), who made a mild first over
bid at three quarters before getting outkicked for second
late.
