Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are safe, effective and drug-free options for the treatment of most nonemergency medical conditions. Whether you’re new to acupuncture or have years of experience, acupuncture can help your general health. WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE? Acupuncture is a form of treatment involving the use of very fine filiform needles that are inserted into certain specific points of the body. This stimulates the body to increase circulation and activate the body’s own natural healing process. Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide range of conditions and illnesses and is a wonderful option when western medication does not work or is not tolerated. Tui-na is a form of Chinese manipulative therapy, consisting of massage, acupressure and other forms of body manipulation. It works by applying pressure to acupoints, meridians and muscles or nerves to remove blockages that prevent free flow of Qi (energy) through the body. Cupping involves the use of glass globes placed on the body to create a suction effect. The vacuum effect that draws up the skin is believed to open up the skin’s pores to stimulate the blood flow to the muscles, balance and realign the flow of Qi. Cupping may result in small, circular bruises in the area where the cups were applied, but these bruises are usually painless and disappear within a few days after the treatment. Finally, moxibustion is a traditional therapy that February 2016 Eldridge Echoes WHAT CONDITIONS CAN BE TREATED? Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is most commonly used to treat pain caused by various illnesses such as arthritis, bursitis, fibromyalgia and PMS. It can be very effective for treating migraine, back pain, neck pain, frozen shoulder and sciatica. Acupuncture can also achieve good results when treating stress related problems such as insomnia, anxiety and depression. It is an effective way to treat substance abuse, reduce substance dependencies (e.g. pain killers) or help you to quit smoking or reduce weight. Acupuncture may also be used as an adjunct to physical rehabilitation or surgical intervention to hasten functional recovery. Talk to your licensed Acupuncturist about what acupuncture and TCM can do for you. Submitted by LOE resident: Yunguang Yang (Lily) …or if you know friends and family who are, please consider and suggest rescuing vs. buying a dog from a breeder. We have every breed of purebred dog available in our Texas pounds and shelters, in great quantities. This is because of the complete lack of any regulations or limit on breeding in Texas. • Approximately 30-40% of euthanasias in pounds involve purebred animals. • Mixed breeds in Texas stand almost no chance of making it out of the pounds alive. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these dogs; they just had the misfortune of being owned by people who did not provide for their needs and care and obviously had no real commitment to their pet. • Countless numbers of people turn their own dogs in to high-kill shelters, dump them rurally in the middle of nowhere or let them roam and stray. It reflects a mentality that most dog lovers do not understand. • When you or someone you know considers adopting a dog, please check out one of our five local animal shelters: 1. O C Chinese herbal medicine refers to the use of a plant’s seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark or flowers for medicinal purposes. Traditionally, this involves formulating a mixture of various herbs to create a formula based on a patient’s specific needs. These herbs can be taken in the form of herbal tea after boiling the herbs in hot water to extract the active ingredients. Although herbal medicine is still widely used and available, formulations in the form of tablets or capsules are more convenient and have become more popular these days. Moxibustion has been used throughout Asia for thousands of years; in fact, the actual Chinese character for acupuncture, translated literally, means “acupuncture-moxibustion.” 24/7 Service P Mount Flat Screens P Generators P Lighting P Add Circuits P Panel Replacement P Cable/Phone 713-467-1125 281-897-0001 www.wiredes.com Family Owned & Operated Award Winner Master #100394 • TECL #22809 February 2016 3 GARDENING TIPS FOR FEBRUARY FLOWERS • Plants to set: Alyssum, Calendula, Canterbury Bells, Carnations, Columbine, Cornflower, Daisies, Delphinium, Hollyhock, Larkspur, Lobelia, Nicotiana, Pansy, Petunia, Phlox (Louisiana), Shrimp Plant, Snapdragon, Stock and Verbena. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. In France, the consumption of all fats and fatty foods on this day coined the name “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. They used the sewing skills they learned earlier this year to make the pillow cases. Troop 16468 also partnered with Troop 113017 in sorting, categorizing and wrapping holiday gifts for the less fortunate families in our community. They also had fun making gingerbread houses at their winter holiday party! 18 Girls and troops in the Cadette through Ambassador Girl Scout levels are invited to join the Cy-Fair Region 4 Facebook group. SCOUTING JOKE FOR FEBRUARY A Scout Master was teaching his Cub Scouts about survival in the desert. “What are the three most important things you should bring with you in case you get lost in the desert?” he asked. Several hands went up and many important things were suggested such as food, matches, etc. Then one little boy in the back eagerly raised his hand. “Yes, Timmy, what are the three most important things you would bring with you?” asked the Scout Master. Timmy replied, “A compass, a canteen of water and a deck of cards.” “Why’s that Timmy?” “Well,” answered Timmy, “the compass is to find the right direction, the water is to prevent dehydration...” “And what about the deck of cards?” asked the Scout Master. “Well, Sir, as soon as you start playing Solitaire, someone is bound to come up behind you and say, “Put that red nine on top of that black ten!” February 2016 Eldridge Echoes Want A Clean You Can Trust?
