History was made on March 16, 2002 as the Weber
State women’s basketball team played in their first ever
NCAA Tournament game. The Wildcats won the Big
Sky regular and post-season championships for the
first time in school history and went into the NCAA’s as
the No. 15 seed in the West Region and faced No. 2
Stanford on their home floor in Palo Alto, California.
On a nationally televised game the Wildcats started out hot and jumped out to a 12-3 lead behind two
three-pointers from freshman Julie Gjertsen. But the
nationally ranked Cardinal came charging back and
took a 12 point lead at halftime and cruised to a 76-51
win. The wildcats were led by Gjertsen who had 16
points. Stephanie Stanger, playing in her final game as
a Wildcat scored 13 points.
The Wildcats won the Big Sky title for the second-
straight year in 2003 and once again advanced to the
NCAA Tournament. This time the ‘Cats went in as
the No. 13 seed in the West Region and faced No. 4
Ohio State in Ruston, Louisiana. The Buckeyes of the
Big Ten Conference jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the
game and never looked back. The Wildcats shot just
22.6 percent in the first half but improved to 47 percent
shooting in the second half. They trailed by 14 at halftime and never got closer that 13 in the second half. Sophomore Juile Gjertsen led Weber State for the
second time in the NCAA Tournament and scored 18
points, including four three-pointers. Playing in her final game of her career senior Crystal Howe had two
points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats.
