Product Review
In an ongoing effort to share some of my favorite tools and

products that are outside of my line, I'd like to gush about the
new and improved (who thought that could be possible?) Jool
Tool.
I've had the original Jool Tool for over six years and it still
works like a champ! You may have even seen me bring it on
one of my cruises. I use it for numerous tasks including
polishing metal clay straight out of the kiln, from start to
finish!, It's perfect for sharping tools and polishing polymer
clay. Here is a link to a video tutorial I made for Fire Mountain
Gems on using the Jool Tool to polish polymer clay:
Using the Jool Tool to Sand, Buff and Polish Polymer
Clay
This was before the Amazing Anie Piliguian (CEO of Jool
Tool and master bench jeweler), came out with a wheel set
just for sanding and buffing polymer clay and the new,
improved version. It's still worth checking out whether you
have the older model or are considering the new one.
I love that both versions accept a precision hand piece,
weighs just over 4 pounds, and has a receptacle to use your
vacuum as a dust collector.
The new version is more portable and versatile than the
original, with a handle and options for vertical or horizontal
use. An ingenious drawer for holding accessories also
doubles as a water reservoir when cutting/polishing glass and
gemstones.
Another incredible advance are specific kits with specialized
wheels for finishing different materials including polymer clay.

The new version even offers an accessory tool that aids in
the sharpening tools, blades and drill bits, making the Jool
Tool even easier to use and more versatile than ever before!
Don't be fooled by the price. While it may seem expensive,
it's well worth the investment, even if you have to save for it.
It's the best and most portable tool of it's kind that I've ever
used. Using the Jool Tool can prevent developing carpal
tunnel syndrome. I've known people who've developed it just
from repetitively sanding clay. If you suffer from this condition
already or equally painful and debilitating conditions of
arthritis and tendonitis, the Jool Tool is a must have.
Watching Anie in action is a real treat. As a master bench
jeweler, this lady knows her stuff! The Jool Tool website
features several video tutorials that show you just how easy it
is to use and how amazing the results are.
Here's a link to a video I shot at the Metal Clay by the Bay
conference when I took my students on a "field trip" to the
Jool Tool booth.
Polishing polymer clay with the Jool Tool
demonstration
Everyone enjoyed watching the nearly effortless steps to get
a mirror-like finish on polymer clay. I do love my Magic Glos
for getting a high gloss finish on baked clay, but there are just
some cases where only sanding and polishing will only do;
like round, cylindrical, and highly domed clay pieces. Learn
more at: about the Jool Tool and watch more examples of it in

Okay, so you've been foiling polymer clay and are left with
beautiful little scraps that are too small for use...or so you
think! If you've foiled clay on one of the larger settings (the
largest through the 3rd), you've got just what you need to get
this cool effect!
1. Start with foiled clay scraps (or just create a small amount
of foiled clay to cut into tiny scraps). If you've never applied
my foil to clay before, refer to the package instructions or
view them along with a free video tutorial.
Note: black clay was used here, but the metallic portion will
have a subtle, framed effect with a totally different impact
when other colors of clay are used. Also, the thicker the clay,
the more prominent the framing effect will appear.
2. Lay a few scraps over a clay background of the same color
(or try a different colored background to get a completely new
look like the white background shown below). The thickness
of the background layer depends on how you intend to use

the clay when finished. For the sample shown, I used the 3rd
largest setting. Adding Magic Glos™ gave the baked piece
more thickness and strength.
3. Roll them into the clay background sheet using an acrylic
rod.

4. Add more strips over the ones laid down in the previous
steps. Roll these into the background. Repeat layering strips
and rolling until you get the desired result. When using a
contrasting colored background, leave some of the clay
showing. Other design ideas include using small clay cutters
to create framed pieces of foil with particular shapes. You
may even wish to create a deckled effect by tearing the
edges by flicking bits of clay away with the tip of a craft knife.

Finishing: Use your metallic mosaic sheets for a variety of
jewelry, accessory and home décor projects. In the finished
sample piece, a heart shaped cookie cutter was used. After
baking, multiple layers of Magic Glos™ were used to create a
glass-like finish. An hour after curing, a suspension hole was
drilled through the resin and clay.
