A message from the
President…
T
he MRAS has a number of
activities dating back over a
hundred years. The Millarville
Races are 107 this coming July. The
Priddis & Millarville Fair is celebrating 105 years in
August. Our Farmers’ Market reaches a significant
milestone this year by celebrating its 30th season. The
Millarville Rodeo is getting prepared for its 16th annual
event. I am continually amazed at the rich history found
in our community, and the part played by the MRAS.
The volunteers of the Historical Committee continue to
uncover, collect and preserve historical MRAS artifacts.
They are responsible for the recent donation of
numerous pictures and items dating back a hundred
years. I commend all the hard work that is obvious in the
displays at the Hall – both depicting our rich history and
highlighting current activity. When you are in the hall
take some time to view the many photos and displays on
the walls. Each time I think I have seen them all, I find
the Historical Committee has rotated or added to the
showings. To all the Historical Committee volunteers –
Job Well Done!!
Another great tradition at the MRAS is community FUN.
We started off the year with Robbie Burns Night, and
most recently, St Paddy’s Pub night provided a night of
family entertainment. Live music, pub-style food, green
beer and laughter created an atmosphere where you
couldn’t help but enjoy a fun-filled evening.
As a society we are constantly looking for ways to
engage our community members and welcome ideas
from our membership and neighbours on things we can
do to improve our great rural lifestyle.

T
Canada Day – Sunday July 1st 2012
he 107th Annual Canada Day celebration and the Millarville Races are back!
Come on out on Sunday, July 1st to see all the fan favorites - thoroughbred horse racing with pari-mutuel
betting, the stock horse race, Millarville Musical Ride, and lots of activities and fun for the kids. Back by
popular demand are the Side Saddle Race and the Pack Horse Race. A smaller version of the Saturday
Farmers’ Market will be happening as well, so be prepared to do some shopping while you’re here.
We are looking for people to participate in some of our newest events – Polocrosse Race, Mule Race and a longer
version of the Stock Horse Race (once around the track rather than a sprint). If you are interested in participating in any
of these races please contact Lori Lohnes at [email protected].
Get your applications to enter the Stock Horse, Side Saddle, and Pack Horse Races in early, as spots are limited. Forms
are available at the office.
If you are interested in one of our great opportunities for company advertisement please contact Malcolm Sills at
[email protected]. We have several different packages available.
Volunteering opportunities are also available on the planning committee, as well as on the day of the event. Please
contact the office if you want to be a part of this exciting event.
Come on out and celebrate Canada Day at the

Meet my dog, Casey, a 13 year old Alaskan Malamute. In September
2011, I didn’t expect her to make it through the winter. All she did was
sleep and had to be coerced into eating. In October, she started
receiving the benefits of the Moringa oleifera tree nutrition. In less
than two weeks, she started eating again, talking, chasing the cats and
exploring the yard. She’s still a 13 year old dog but now with a much
higher quality of life. My son says “It’s like she’s gone back in time.”
Thank you Dr. Noreen Ziegler, Veterinarian, Clinical Nutritionist and
fellow Zija advocate, for your recommendations on how to bring
quality back to Casey’s life.
Not a runner? Not a problem. You can always be
involved in this fabulous event as a volunteer. Just
give us a couple of hours of your time and enjoy a
complimentary thank you buffet post-race at the
Racetrack Hall and receive a volunteer t-shirt as well.
For more information and to register both as a
participant and a volunteer for the Millarville "Run To
The Farmers' Market" Half Marathon, go
to www.millarvillehalfmarathon.com or contact
Krystal Meade, Events Manager at MRAS, at 403-9313411 for further details.
For more information on how you can help your dog, cat, bird, calf, pig,
horse, etc., listen to the February 14, 2012 blog talk interview “Animal
Health Using the Moringa Products from Zija”, between Dr. Pat

S
St. Paddy’s Pub Night
aturday March 17th members of the community and the
MRAS met at the Racetrack Hall for a night of good old
fashioned fun to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Guests arrived
starting at about 7 pm to a hall decked out in shamrocks, green,
and balloons. After saying hello to neighbors and friends, the
kitchen started firing up appetizer platters for sharing, and the
bartender tapped the keg of green beer.
Bill Battenby broke out the guitar and started strumming some
old favorite country tunes, and eventually got some people up
dancing. Kids were kept busy on the stage doing crafts, colouring,
and watching movies under the supervision of a local teen.
Parents were happy to have some time to chat with their friends knowing the children were well taken care of, and busy
creating Irish inspired crafts to take home.
It sure was nice to see new faces to the event and we hope to see them again. We want our community members to
enjoy spending time at the Racetrack, and feel like they are getting involved in some of the great things that take place
in our community on a year round basis. Hopefully, we are able to do evenings like this on a more regular basis, with the
community’s support of course.
Thanks to all who attended. See you next time.
Spring is in the Air - Time to Tidy Up!
Spring seems to be the season when everyone gets busy cleaning.
We dust under the furniture, throw away or donate items we no
longer need, and start to get ready for summer.
If you’re anything like us at the Racetrack, we have piles of old
paper and documents dating back decades that are taking up space
and collecting dust. With that in mind, we have contacted a mobile
shredding company that is going to be joining us at the MRAS
Racetrack Hall on April 22nd from 11 am – 2 pm to help us shred
some of the old unneeded papers we have piling up around here.
Don’t be shy! Clean out those filing cabinets; dig out the boxes of
past tax returns, even the old utility statements. This is your
chance to come down with all your old papers, bills and documents
to shred away your clutter for FREE. You can even plan to meet up
with your neighbours while you’re here.
If you would like more information, just call us at the office and
we’ll fill you in on all the
shredding details. See you on
April 22nd at 11 am (403) 931-3411
I
t’s that time again! The Millarville Rodeo
Committee is in full planning mode getting ready
for another action packed rodeo weekend, taking
place August 3rd – 5th 2012. This year get ready to see
a brand new exciting layout, great entertainment all
weekend long and of course in-your-face, up close
and personal rodeo action.
The beer garden will be relocated, and will now be
set up on the north end of the Rodeo Ring combined
with the previous VIP area. We want visitors and
sponsors alike to feel like they are part of the action,
and these will most definitely be the best seats in the
house. Hungry visitors can grab a bite to eat and a
beer at the Threepoint Kitchen BBQ Pit in the beer
garden and enjoy the action from the bleachers set
up next to the Rodeo Arena.
Jo Hikk will be performing for the Rodeo Dance,
starting at 8 pm on Saturday evening in the indoor
arena. Local Calgary-based Jo Hikk has been playing
live shows along the rodeo tour and country dance
halls for ages, and they know how to put on a great
show.
**Congratulations**
Anne & Barney MacKay are
pleased to announce the
engagement and wedding of their
son Jim to Natalie!
Family & Friends – please join us at
the Anglican Church House for
Natalie Mackay’s bridal shower on
April 25th 2012 at 7:30pm
Gifts of housewares and kitchen items
for the happy couple are graciously
accepted.
The band also has some great nominations and
accolades behind them – recently they were featured on
the “Canadian Country Spotlight”, as well as being
nominated for Group or Duo of the Year and Rising Star
Award by the Canadian Country Music Association. We
are thrilled to have them join us for the Rodeo Dance,
and we KNOW you will have a great time dancing the
night away. Check out their website for more info on the
band: www.johikk.com
For all the families who attend the Millarville Rodeo – we
haven’t forgotten about you either. We are working on
some new and exciting child-friendly activities where
kids can have fun, learn about the rodeo lifestyle, and
interact with other youngsters. Keep in mind that we
have an amazing campground on the MRAS site, so make
a stay-cation out of the long weekend, spend the
weekend camping with your family, taking in the
Farmers’ Market, Rodeo Action, and Cowboy Church on
Sunday morning. Don’t forget the Millarville Farmers
Market will be taking place on Saturday & Sunday of
Rodeo weekend too!
For the local junior barrel racers out there, make sure
you’re keeping your horses in top shape so they are
ready to run in our local junior performances on
Saturday and Sunday. We’ll keep you posted on entry
days and times over the next couple of months… but
don’t miss out on a chance to run your pony, and maybe
win some big money.
If your business is interested in sponsoring the rodeo, check out
the MRAS sponsorship page at:
http://www.millarvilleracetrack.com/sponsorships or call us for
more info.
If you would like to lend a hand planning the Rodeo – we are in
need of a few key Committee Members. Currently we are looking
for a Volunteer Coordinator, Family Entertainment Coordinator,
Sponsorship Assistant Coordinator, and extra hands on Rodeo
Weekend. Call Krystal Meade at (403)931-3411 or Barney MacKay
at (403) 931 -2592 for more details.
I
t is 22nd March 2012. The snow is falling, falling, falling. Am I out skiing, or snowmobiling, or bringing in wood for the
fireplace? NO! Fair committee members have been busy. There are some things we know for sure, and other things
that require more attention.
The Ice Cream Horses are returning, along with more heavy-horse teams and teamsters. Kids World and the Petting Zoo
will return. The 2nd Annual Farm Truck Competition will return with the same prize money as last year. The new Antique
Tractor Show will put its stamp on the 2012 Fair, so make sure yours is in good working order and ready to fire up in
August. Domestic Birds are looking to enlarge their numbers and turf. The Honey Bee display will return to reside
between Field Crops and Cooking. As always, the Millarville Farmers’ Market will be taking place all day on August 18th
as well – so bring a cooler to store your produce in, and plan to take in all the Fair activities.
Get ready!! We have some new FUN classes available to tantalize or torture the human mind. The open Cowboy Boot
Competition will get us going – how to “best” display a pair of cowboy boots. Wait till you see the options.
Woodworking also has a new class – a model outhouse. How authentic and creative will this get? And then Arts &
Crafts has opened a class for critters (to be entered by anyone involved with critters): Salt Block Sculpture. For those of
you with access to animals needing salt, get yourselves a salt block and start communicating with the critters.
Many “thank you’s” to those of you who have forwarded your donations and sponsorships for the Fair. It is through
your continued support that we are able to continue producing the Fair. Fundraising continues! Be part of this unique,
exciting, and community-funded event.
We are older than the Calgary Stampede and younger than the Races. What other community has two events older
than the Calgary Stampede? What other community has the support of so many to make things continue to happen?
How do we do it? Every one of us plays a part. The volunteers and sponsors make it happen. The spectators and
exhibitors make it happen. And me – I am often left wondering “How did that happen?” It is our community. It is our
105th Priddis and Millarville Fair. What part do you want to play?
We still need volunteers to help with the following parts of the Fair: The Talent Show and the Antique Auto Show need
help. Kids World needs volunteers. The Petting Zoo needs volunteers. The Auction Committee needs a manager.
There are lots of things to do.
If you would like to get involved, email either myself
[email protected]
or
Patty Webb [email protected]
Start working on your Fair Entries soon.
See you on August 18th!
