Spring Term
Friday 5th February 2016
Year 9 Parents’ Evening
Thursday 11th February 2016 - 4pm to 7pm at the Bury Campus.
All parents and carers of students in Year 9 are expected to come and
meet with all teachers to discuss your child’s progress and achievements.
It will take place at the Bury Campus from 4-7pm on Thursday 11th
February 2016. An appointment system will operate and you should
check that your child has arranged to see all of their teachers. The
teachers will inform you of the next steps in learning and individual
targets. This will also be an opportunity for you to view your child’s work.
An appointment sheet can be found in student’s planners on either
pages 161 or 162 depending on their House.
Registration will take place from 3.45pm in the Bury Canteen.
Parents’ evening is a very important event and offers parents the opportunity to discuss their child’s
progress in school and support them in their learning and future success.
We look forward to seeing you there.
School Photo Orders
Your child will be bringing home proofs of school photos which were taken recently. The deadline for
online orders has been extended to Friday 19th February 2016. It is preferred that orders are placed
online, however orders can be handed in to the school office by Monday 22 nd February when we return
after half term. Please send in your orders using the order form which was supplied
with the proof.
Any orders placed after the expiry date will be subject to a surcharge and will be
posted directly to home.
Thank you for your co-operation.

Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you so much for attending Family Learning Week. Classes were well attended and some parents
enjoyed learning to play board games with their children, making clocks as well as a relaxing Yoga session!
There were lots of other activities that parents enjoyed. We would like to hear your feedback about last
week’s event as we always strive for perfection. Please see with your child’s class teacher if you have any
feedback and ideas as we would like to run family learning week again this year.
Last week we sent out a letter to gain further interest on our breakfast club and extended after school club
until 6pm. It is very important that you fill in the reply slip and give this to your child’s class teacher before
the half term break. Please note that Fit 4 Sport will not be able to run with insufficient uptake. If you need
any further queries regarding this club please see Ms Barber or Mrs Davenport in the school office.
Have a lovely weekend.
Yours sincerely

As you may be aware, our newsletter is now being sent electronically to cut down on paper. We need to
ensure that we have your correct email address, so if you have changed or updated please let the Primary
Office know.
We have recently had some cases of head lice which we would like to inform you about. This is common,
however, please check your child’s hair regularly. Also please ensure that long hair is tied back. We
understand that you can obtain free treatment if it is prescribed from your GP.
Interested in extended school provision – breakfast and afterschool clubs??? If so, please complete the
questionnaire that was given out last Friday to your child and please return by 12th February.

Student Union Assembly Takeover
On Thursday 28th January Shannon Kearns, the Deputy
Head of the Student Union was invited to lead the Year
13 assembly.
If someone who didn’t know she was a student had
walked in half way through they would have thought
Shannon was a teacher taking the assembly!
Shannon was able to keep the audience’s attention and
produced an excellent Powerpoint presentation giving
details of the plans the Student Union have for
fundraising and the Summer Ball.
Shannon is certainly a budding public speaker!

UCAS Applications Update
The deadline for UCAS applications was the 15th January and
our students have been receiving some fantastic offers.
The months of hard work by our Year 13 students writing and rewriting
their personal statements has certainly paid off.
We are extremely proud of Abdisamad Omar who has had an offer from the University
of Cambridge to study Engineering.

Year 10 ‘Success For Life’ Programme
You may remember me informing you of the ‘Arrival Education –
Success for Life’ Programme that was aimed at year 10 students.
After the very successful Launch assembly, we had over 200 applications for this programme and only 30
students were shortlisted – each student had their moment to shine in the ‘Circle Time’ activity and we are
very pleased that the following students have been successful.

ENRICHMENT DAY - EXPRESSIVE ARTS FACULTY 2016
A- LEVEL ART, TEXTILE AND PHOTOGRAPHY STUDENTS VISIT LONDON GALLERIES
On the first Enrichment day of 2016 the Expressive Arts faculty organised a
trip to visit a Selection of Galleries in central London for all the A level Art,
Textiles and Photography students. This was an opportunity to experience
new galleries that the students hadn’t visited before and to see current
exhibitions. The experience would help to provide valuable and relevant
research for their A level exam projects.
The students attended the new ‘Champagne Life‘ exhibition at the Saatchi
Gallery. The exhibition celebrates the work of female artists and provides an opportunity to reflect on what it
means to be a female artist working today.- www.saatchigallery.com/artists/champagne-life
Rozenn Logan, Head of Education at the Saatchi Gallery, has a close liaison
with Edmonton County School, regularly working with the Art department
and our Gifted and Talented students. Rozenn provided the students with a
very detailed tour of the exhibition, providing in-depth information about the
different artists and the ideas behind the all-female exhibition. The majority
of the students had never been to the Saatchi Gallery so they were very
enthusiastic and inspired by the experience.
‘It was my first time visiting the Saatchi Gallery - it was nice to see less
traditional and up and coming female artists, it really inspired me’
Eve Davis Year 13 Art student
The students then attended a self guided tour of
Tate Britain in Millbank and explored the ‘500 years
of British Art at Tate Britain’ which included the ‘BP
spotlight’ and ‘Conceptual Art - 1964-1979’.
The students had a lot to say about the different types of Art they could see
including Tracey Emins ‘My Bed’ installation 1998.
‘Art is something that should make you stop and think and the exhibitions really helped me do that’
Leanne Potter year 12 - Art/Textiles and Photography student
‘Visiting lots of galleries had not been done before so this trip was a really good idea - I found it very
interesting and it will really help me develop my exam project’
Clarisse Dohmatob year 13 Art student
‘The Saatchi Gallery showed me that an art gallery is not just
about a room of paintings - it was exciting, different and
modern. I hadn’t seen anything like this before - I was really
inspired’
Luke Roberts year 12 Photography student
‘It was fantastic welcoming Edmonton’s AS and A-Level Art
students to the Saatchi Gallery last week. The students were
engaged and made some very interesting points in relation to
the Champagne Life exhibition tour and, as ever, their teachers
Ms Shilvock and Mrs Jimenez were extremely supportive and
encouraged discussion. I’m looking forward to seeing how their
artwork has been inspired by the show!’
Rozenn Logan- Head of Education - Saatchi Gallery
Thank you to all the staff and students that attended the trip
and contributed to a very successful enrichment day.
Ms Jane Shilvock - Head of Expressive Arts Faculty
Target Medicine Summer School
This is A UCL Medical School outreach project aimed at Year 11 students from
London-based, non-selective state schools who are thinking of studying
medicine at university. It is a free, week-long programme that runs from

Heath).
Students will be mentored by two medical students and will get the opportunity to meet real patients and
doctors, visit various UCL hospitals and learn emergency response skills in a purpose-built Clinical Skills
Centre. The Summer School helps students find out what life is like as a medical student and doctor and
aims to be both inspirational and give students the confidence to pursue medicine as a career.
The closing date for applications is Monday 11th April 2016.
Eligibility criteria- for any year 11 students who

HIGHER EDUCATION FAIR.
WEDNESDAY 24TH FEBRUARY- CAMBS CAMPUS HALL
We are pleased to be hosting our own Higher Education Fair in Cambridge Hall between 1pm-4.00pm on
24th February.
We have around 25 universities attending and this will give students in year 11 the opportunity to see
what they could study at university and what subjects would be good to choose for their A Levels. It will
also help year 12 students as they begin to go through the UCAS process and decide what they would like
to study and where, if university is an option that they are considering.
Parents of students in Year 12 are welcome to attend between 3-4.00pm if they wish.

YEAR 12 VISIT TO NEWNHAM COLLEGE
This week, 9 students from Year 12 visited Newnham College, Cambridge to hear about life at
Oxbridge; how to apply, the subjects that are on offer, and what to expect when studying there.
We had a guided tour around Newnham and Trinity/Claire College, and heard first hand from current
undergraduates about what they are studying, what their interview had been like, what extra-curricular
things they are involved in and so on.
Several of our students said they had been inspired to apply, having heard about the range of subjects that
are available, and having had some of the myths that surround studying at Oxbridge dismissed.
Who knows where they will end up next year?!
