Action Words
Language Objectives
This activity helps to develop both semantic and syntactic skills.
Semantics
To label actions using the Present Participle. E.g. Running, shopping, packing.
Syntax - To utilise correctly:
Present Progressive Tense (i.e. auxiliary verbs ‘is’ and ‘are’ + present participle). E.g.
She is shopping. She is running.
Subjective Pronouns - It, He, She, They.
Future Tense. E.g. She will shop. She is going to run. He will be packing his suitcase.
Past Tense for regular verbs. E.g. She shopped. He packed his suitcase.
Past Tense for irregular verbs. E.g. She ran.
Target Year Groups
Kindy to Year 3.
How to Play
1. The teacher decides what grammatical structure the activity will focus on and chooses the
appropriate set of verb cards, either the regular or the irregular verbs.
2. Spread the chosen set of verb cards face down on the table. Each set contains verb
pictures + a star card.
3. The first player picks up a card and responds to the teacher’s stimulus question (See the
Questions and Answers Table).
4. Play then proceeds to the next player.
5. The game continues in this manner until a player turns up the star card and is the winner.

Irregular Verbs - Ideal Responses
It is possible that students will give varied past tense answers, so example answers have
been given. For teaching purposes, it is best to focus on one tense at a time, however one
can acknowledge a student’s correct response but also expose the group to the other
desired response.
