October - Norfolk Municipal Employees Credit Union
October
2007
We’ ve
Grown Up
Together
September marked Norfolk Municipal Employees
Federal Credit Union’s 50 th Anniversary andThe
City of Norfolk’s 325th Birtday.
In 1957, the cornerstone for Norfolk General
Hospital’s new wing was laid, Calvert Park opened,
the International Naval Review, celebrating the
sesquicentennial of our nation’s birth, was held,
and NMEFCU was born.
Welcome! Welcome!
We are very happy to welcome our new Vice
President Elizabeth Cruickshank to NMEFCU.
Mrs. Cruickshank holds a Masters in Business
Administration and has more than 20 years experience
in business and marketing.
Mrs. Cruickshank will focus on building the credit
union membership, expanding the services and
programs we offer, and maintaining the relationships
NMEFCU has developed over the last 50 years.
“I am looking forward to meeting each of our Select
Employee Groups (SEG) to discuss how NMEFCU
can better serve the membership,” stated Mrs.
Cruickshank.
The first permanent NMEFCU office was located
in the Old Telephone Building on Plum Street.
When the new City Hall building was completed,
the credit union moved to Union Street and
moved into the first floor location. For many years,
NMEFCU only had one full-time employee, didn’t
handle cash or have tellers, and loans were made
from other credit unions to allow us to cover our
loan demands.
From 50 acres of land and a population of 1, Norfolk
has grown to 61.86 square miles (39,590.4 acres)
and a population of nearly 300,000. NMEFCU
has followed suit. Today, we offer a variety of share
savings and club accounts; mortgage, auto, and
consumer loans; as well as money market, IRA, and
Certificate of Deposit accounts. Your full-service
credit union is poised to grow with Norfolk to
expand our access and services for both our current
and future members.
Watch for new opportunities to reduce your loan
rates and increase your savings rates through
Member Rewards. Watch for more information in
future publications and on the NMEFCU Web site

What you can do to help protect your privacy
As a member of your Credit Union, you have a responsibility to
safeguard your financial information. You can do so by following
these simple guidelines:
• Protect your member numbers, card numbers, PINs (Personal
Identification Numbers) and passwords. Never keep your PIN
with your debit or credit card, which can provide access to your
accounts if your card is lost or stolen.
•Use caution when disclosing your member numbers and social
security numbers to other persons. If someone calls you,
explains the call is on behalf of the Credit Union, and asks for
your member number, beware. Official Credit Union staff will
have access to your information and will not need to ask for it.
•Keep your information with us current. It is important that we
have current information and know how to reach you.
Your financial privacy is an important part of your relationship
with NMEFCU. Should you have any questions about the
NMEFCU Privacy Policy, you may reach us via e-mail at nmefcu@
norfolkcu.org or by calling 757-664-4273.
How Can I Prevent Identity
Theft & Identity Fraud?
Fingerprints are unique to you and cannot be used by
someone else. Social Security, credit union account, and
credit card numbers can be used by criminals to personally
profit at your expense. Losses may include out-of-pocket
financial losses as well as substantial additional financial
costs to restore your reputation, credit, and correct untrue
information for which the criminal is responsible.
What Are The Most Common Ways Criminals
Commit Identity Theft Or Fraud?
Shoulder Surfing - Obtaining personal information by
“shoulder surfing,” or watching you from a nearby
location as you punch in your PIN or credit card number;
listening to your conversation as you give your creditcard number or account number over the telephone.
Dumpster Diving - Digging through your garbage cans
to obtain copies of checks, credit card or financial
statements, or other records that bear your name, address,
and even your telephone number; allowing criminals to
gain control over accounts in your name and assume your
identity.
Retreiving Preapproval Forms - Discarded applications for
To reduce or minimize the risk of becoming a victim
of identity theft or fraud, there are some basic steps
you can take. For starters, just remember the word

Be stingy about giving out your personal
information to others unless you have a reason to
trust them, regardless of where you are.
Ask periodically for a copy of your credit report
and check it for suspicious or unfamiliar activity.
Maintain careful records of your banking and
Mfinancial
accounts.

contact:
• Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to report the situation,
toll-free at 1-877-ID THEFT (877-438-4338).
“preapproved” credit cards in your mailbox or garbage
can, allows criminals to retrieve the forms and activate
the cards for their use without your knowledge.
•
Derailing Mail - Criminals can intercept and redirect your
•
mail to another location. By ensuring bills for the falsely
obtained credit cards, or bank statements showing the
unauthorized withdrawals, are sent to a different address,
the victim may not become aware of what is happing until
the criminal has already inflicted substantial damage to
the victim’s assets, credit, and reputation.
