It’s their garage. This setting - like no other place in their alpine-edge getaway - mirrors the couple’s recreation philosophy: take fun seriously. Got bocce’? You bet’cha. A cross-country cache of ski stash? Naturally. A round-up of racquets? They’re a smash. For Al and Darcy, having a sensational Suncadia garage means leaving lawn mowers and weed whackers behind at their primary home in Seattle. They prefer trading typical weekend work tools in for a plethora of playthings designed for family, guests and the new friends they’ve made while vacationing here over the past nine years. “It doesn’t look a lot different from a mini-REI,” Al says of their hot-spot garage. He takes great pride sharing tales of colorful Fourth of July celebrations, festive Christmas holiday events and the occasionally “wild New Year’s Eve parties” they have hosted at their Suncadia getaway. And many of these start in their garage. Unlike the workbenches and lawn tools that pack a utilitarian garage, the reservoir of recreational gear at the Levine/ Wildermuth’s Suncadia home is a magnet “for a community-building activity.” For the Seattle-area couple, garage games-and-gear started when they debuted their twice-yearly signature events that coincided with and borrowed from the cross-street names of their neighborhood: Equinox and Solstice. Now, hosting activities for neighbors is a year-round attraction, explains Darcy. The cross-country ski rack in their garage is lined with 12 pairs of skis - some belonging to friends who left them behind in hopes of investing in a future invitation. Ten pairs of ready-to-strap-on snowshoes - “a lot easier on some of the trails around here” - turn 40 miles of paved and unpaved warm-weather Suncadia bicycling paths into long leisurely stretches of groomed winterwonderland routes throughout the community. With spring, their bikes and hiking gear takes center garage stage. Basketball and tennis courts, horseshoe pits, and fields for baseball, softball and soccer all can be found nearby at Suncadia’s own Dawson Park. Inside garages throughout Suncadia, other homeowners store their “toys” too. It’s the perfect place for them. Fly-fishing anglers, kayakers, rock climbers, snowboarders, snowmobilers and horseback riders find 1,200 pristine acres along the Cle Elum River, the fresh air of Wenatchee National Forest and adrenaline-fueled Snoqualmie Pass. Perhaps the closest thing to a traditional garage power tool that can be found in Darcy and Al’s garage are the two ice saws that he gave her shortly after they bought their Suncadia retreat. These tokens of affection come in handy when Darcy is crafting her magnificent obsession: her annual winter igloo. This seasonal structure started as small snow fort built for their nephews in the couple’s early years here. It has since evolved into an annual architectural masterpiece and community barn-raising style of entertainment. The couple’s Suncadia neighbors and friends now flock to help erect the frozen - though temporary - manse, crafted these days with a roof and spacious enough to hold up to eight adults for mingling and dining. Some years, Al laughs, he’s counted up to 40 guests who prefer to sip drinks while watching the construction from the warm and comfort of the Levine/ Wildermuth “indoor” living room. Equipment and supplies the couple uses for summer barbecues also makes itself at home in their garage - while the bounty of Kittitas County environs is as close as charming Cle Elum. “Things have changed a lot,” since they first started grilling at Suncadia. “Now you find all the recipes on the Internet, but arguably the best butcher shop in the state of Washington is still here at Owens Meats.” While their scheduled events are legendary among Suncadia neighbors, Al and Darcy still believe that it’s the spur-of-the-moment social activities that generate memories here. Even so, the couple says, their activities don’t hold a candle to Suncadia’s “Wine and Dine” club - a mix of nearly 50 Suncadia homeowners who gather monthly, April through December. Each attendee brings an appetizer and bottle of wine to share while hosted by various homeowners on a rotating basis. As they say, the fun comes naturally. Just like Suncadia’s setting. Credit for that, the couple believes, belongs to their neighbors and friends. “Everyone here has a common interest: to relax and enjoy themselves,” says Al. basecamp • Spring 2014 3 Condominiums at suncadia Stop by the Sales Center at The Lodge to to see our model home. When it’s time to re-energize, Brock and Molly Huard of Redmond prefer to un-plug from technology and recharge at Suncadia 6,400 acres nature-kissed meadows, woodlands and streams on the east edge of the Cascade Mountains within the Wenatchee National Forest. With demanding jobs and three busy kids, their decision to build a vacation house in Prospector’s Reach in this AAA four-diamond luxury resort community - barely an hour from their Eastside home - was what Brock calls “a non-starter.” “It’s such a great location,” the TV college-football and ESPN/Seattle sports radio broadcaster says. “What’s so nice and convenient - especially now that our kids are busy with soccer, basketball and other school activities - is that we can head over after all of that on a Saturday - even if it’s just for a 24-hour stay, to get away from it all.” “This is exactly why we bought at Suncadia: it’s for our kids. It’s a place for all of us to disconnect,” he continues. “We know things get busy, and we need to have balance, so this is a place where we can come not just for ourselves, but to entertain immediate family and our friends for many, many years to come. “Not to be corny, but when we have first-timers here, and they experience sitting out by the campfire at night, they often realize that they need something like this because they’re at risk of getting caught up in the rat-race,” says Huard. “Sure, we have Internet connections, but we find guests don’t turn on their computers or check their emails because they follow suit with us.” “We’ve been here for a few years, and it still feels like a totally different place every time we get here,” Huard adds. “The kids love it; we love it. It’s such a blessing.” 10 [email protected] • 1.800.667.1828 • www.suncadia.com Suncadia Real Estate Sales Company has partnered with several of the Northwest’s leading home builders to bring you the Prospector’s Reach Collection, a collection of distinctive luxury vacation homes that are rustic in appearance and functional by design to meet the active Suncadia lifestyle. Ownership changed over the next few decades and then the small dairy was renamed for the Nelson family that grew the business into a sizeable operation with over 120 cows at its peak in the 1930′s. As the Great Depression took hold, the dairy’s business began to decline, eventually ceasing in 1940. Several interesting pieces of machinery used on the pastures and fields remain at the farm along with many of the original structures. Today the 127 acre farm, owned by Suncadia LLC.,includes a two-story farm house, a log cabin a barn and various outbuildings that are being repurposed to provide a unique place for gathering, community events, sports and community garden. The farm also includes open pastures, and two protected wetlands. In the summer of 2013 Suncadia joined the Barn Quilt Trail of Washington with the Nelson Dairy Farm “Sunburst” barn quilt. The Cutthroat got its name from the distinctive red or orange linear marks along the underside of their jaw. In the Cle Elum River, Cutthroat enjoy long lives allowing them to grow to large lengths. The Kittitas band of the Yakama Nation were the first inhabitants of Upper Kittitas County. During the warm months they lived in small villages along the Cle Elum River where they hunted and fished for food that was abundant in this area. 340 Big Rock Lane $125,000 .40 acres Fish were split, dried, and wrapped in tule matting for preservation.
