FEBRUARY HALF-TERM FESTIVAL
– FEATURING SHOWZAM!
It’s a time when many seaside destinations
are still in hibernation. Not Blackpool. All
major attractions open for business and
there is the added bonus of the annual
Showzam! festival, when Blackpool
becomes Circus Town, playing host to
some of the most inventive circus
companies in the UK. For full programme
details go to www.showzam.co.uk.
BLACKPOOL ARMED FORCES
WEEK 22-28 JUNE
Blackpool has a long tradition of
celebrating the work of the Armed Forces
– and we do that by building an exciting
week-long programme of events around
national Armed Forces Day in June.
The town-wide programme is our way of
saying “thank you” to the Armed Forces,
friends and family, by hosting free
concerts, exhibitions and ceremonial
events for you to share.

BLACKPOOL AIR SHOW
RIDE THE LIGHTS
There can be no more uplifting sight than
watching the likes of the Red Arrows
painting intricate patterns in the sky above
Blackpool Promenade or seeing a Typhoon
fighter jet streak across the horizon at over
450 knots.
For one night only….the opportunity to
take a magical bike ride through the
Blackpool Illuminations.
That’s all part of the thrill of the
breathtaking Blackpool Air Show – a free
event over two days and featuring some of
the most spectacular aerial displays in the
country.
2014 saw amazing displays by the Red
Arrows, daredevil wing walkers, and
military aircraft, showcasing the very best
in British aviation.
Incredibly, 2015 will see the 106th annual
air show in Blackpool, making it one of the
longest running air shows in the world and
giving good reason to make it better than
ever.
This annual event sees the whole stretch of
the Promenade closed to vehicles for three
hours giving thousands of cyclists the
chance to get a sneak preview of the
Illuminations before they are formally
switched on a few days later.
Ride The Lights is a free event, open to
everyone, and includes a range of
entertainment, stalls, workshops and
competitions to keep cyclists entertained
throughout the evening.
The route runs from Starr Gate, South
Shore all the way through to Red Bank
Road, Bispham, with riders able to go in
either direction and cycle as much or as
little of the course as they want.

SWITCH-ON FESTIVAL WEEKEND
BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS
It’s the biggest night of Blackpool’s season
– the night when one of the UK’s biggest
celebrities will switch on the world-famous
Illuminations in front of 20,000 people on a
purpose-built outdoor arena in the shadow
of Blackpool Tower.
It’s the longest and most enduring event in
the Blackpool calendar, attracting over
three million visitors during the autumn
season.
The 2014 event saw Britain's best-loved
comedian, Peter Kay, switch on the Lights
after a star-studded concert starring girl
band Little Mix, supported by Texas,
George Ezra, Neon Jungle, Union J, Matt
Cardle and many more.
2014 also saw the launch of Blackpool’s
first Switch-On Festival Weekend with the
Friday night event followed by two great
nights of entertainment including Thriller
Live! from the West End and singing star
Rebecca Ferguson in concert.
The big question is….who will pull the
switch in 2015?
11,18, 25 SEPT & 2 OCT
WORLD FIREWORKS
CHAMPIONSHIP

season – four stunning firework displays
that light up the sky above Blackpool
seafront – and they are all FREE to watch.
Every year sees a new array of features –
and 2015 will be no different with our
innovative designers using the latest
technology to enhance what has long been
dubbed the greatest free light show on
earth.
2014 saw Canada beat off competition
from Sweden and Austria to take the
coveted title with manufacturers Titanium
rounding off the programme with an
astonishing exhibition over North Pier.
There are lots of ways you can view this
wonderful attraction.
2015 will see more competitors from
around the world bidding to take the
crown.
You can drive along the entire stretch, take
a modern or illuminated heritage tram, or
why not park your car and take a walk
through the Lights? It’s a fantastic
opportunity for you and the family to enjoy

DIARY OF A 10
YEAR OLD
BLACKPOOL THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD
It’s no secret to millions of families through the generations – Blackpool
has an enduring ability to capture the imagination of children of all
ages. It’s that heady mix of bright lights, wide open spaces and amazing
attractions that make them go “wow”! It’s a combination that creates
memories that last a lifetime. But don’t just take our word for it…..
Day 1
Day One in Blackpool and the sun is
shining. We arrived early and me, my
eight-year-old sister and Mum and Dad
know we’re going to have a brilliant time.
Sunny day means Blackpool Pleasure
Beach so we headed there straight away.
Wow, it was fantastic. There were so many
brilliant rides for us all to enjoy. I thought I
was really brave going on the Big Dipper
and Grand National but then my dad
decided I should give Infusion a go. I ended
up with no voice from all the screaming!
We stayed in the Pleasure Beach all day
and were shattered at the end of it so it
was early to bed ready for the next day.
Day 2
Day Two and the weather was brilliant
when we got up so dad said best to head
off to The Blackpool Tower and go up to
the SKYWALK at the top. I did not expect
this! Before you get to the SKYWALK you
go into a 4D cinema and you really feel like
you’re flying over Blackpool.
We all absolutely loved SpongeBob’s
Splash Bash in Nickelodeon Land but we
all agreed that the best family ride was
Valhalla. It looked like we’d all been in the
shower when we came out. Awesome!
10
www.visitblackpool.com
Then we went up in the lift to see the
SKYWALK and I felt like I was walking on
air. It felt a bit strange to be stood on a
glass floor so high up, and a bit scary too,
but it was fantastic. We loved it and we got
some brill photos of us lying on the floor
and looking out over the Comedy Carpet
and the sea.
Next stop was The Blackpool Tower
Dungeon. Mum and sister went to get us
all some fish and chips while me and dad
did the Dungeon. Dad got picked on by a
pretend judge and a plague doctor so that
was really funny. The Drop Dead ride at the
end was amazing.
We then went off to the beach with our fish
and chips and had a great time building
sandcastles and burying mum and dad’s
feet all afternoon.
Day 3
Day Three and time for Sandcastle
Waterpark. I could not believe how good it
was. My sister was a bit nervous but she
did want to give everything a go and she
was the right height so we just went for it.
The great thing was we could go on some
rides on our own and some with mum and
dad. We both agreed that the
Masterblaster and Sidewinder were our
favourites and even if you don’t like the big
rides there’s still loads to do in the pool and
water play areas.
getting to dress up like a rock star, my
sister loved having her own hand made in
wax and dad was pretty impressed with
the Two Ronnies.
The sun was shining after lunch so we
decided to go for a walk on the prom and
visit Madame Tussauds. Amazing!
We’d had a great day and we knew it was
going to be a great night too as we had
tickets to see the Hot Ice Show at the
Pleasure Beach Arena. For the whole
show, which was brill, all I could hear
my mum and sister saying was “Wow”
every two minutes!
We got some brilliant photos of us with
stars and I think mum really enjoyed sitting
next to David Beckham. My favourite was

sea creatures here and we loved just
watching them but we didn’t realise that
mum and dad had treated us so that we
could feed the sharks.
We didn’t get in the water so we felt safe
but it was still a bit strange having a shark
swimming up to you so you could give it its
lunch!
Day 4
Day Four meant a trip out to Blackpool
Zoo. My favourites were definitely the
Orangutans and we all loved trying to get
them to wave at us and stood there for
ages pulling funny faces. My sister loved
the sealion show which was fantastic.
There was so much to see and do in the
Zoo and we didn’t really want to leave, but
we had spotted the Model Village just
down the road so we went there. I have
never felt so tall!
Mum and dad said that was enough for
one day but we managed to get a quick
trip to Ripley’s Believe It or Not before
going back to our hotel and saw some
pretty amazing things. I didn’t even know
such things as a two headed calf existed
and the shrunken heads were gross!
Day 5
Day Five was our last day but we were
determined to make it a fun one so after a
walk down the prom we went to SEA LIFE
Blackpool. There are thousands of different
www.blackpoolresortpass.com
12
www.visitblackpool.com
We thought things couldn’t get much
better than that but then we headed back
to The Blackpool Tower to see the Circus.
We laughed and laughed at the clowns
Mooky and Mr Boo who were so silly and
funny and the acrobats were ace.

THE BEST THINGS
IN LIFE ARE FREE
STROLL ALONG THE PROM
Everyone enjoys a stroll along the
prom. Whether it’s to blow away
the cobwebs, catch some rays or
just enjoy a relaxing walk along
Blackpool’s famous Golden Mile.
There is so much to see and do
that this 7-mile walk really could
fill a whole day for you.
THINGS TO DO IF YOU’RE
WATCHING THE PENNIES:
AND IN BLACKPOOL YOU DON’T NEED TO FLASH THE CASH TO HAVE A GOOD TIME
With magnificent sweeping
Spanish steps, magnificent
beaches, open views across the
Irish Sea and miles and miles of
beautiful picnic spots you really
will be spoilt for choice when you
see Blackpool’s restored and
regenerated seafront.
ENJOY A PICNIC ON THE BEACH
People have been doing it for centuries but there
really is something very satisfying about being
able to enjoy a picnic on a British beach. And
with seven miles of golden sands to choose from
you will be spoilt for choice.
WINTER GARDENS
THE COMEDY CARPET AND
TOWER FESTIVAL HEADLAND
First opened to the public in July
1878 this “most magnificent palace
of amusement” has been welcoming
visitors ever since. Transport yourself
back to the Victorian era when the
well-heeled would travel to Blackpool
to “promenade” and enjoy the
year-round garden in the beautiful
breath-taking Floral Hall. Having
recently been refurbished the Floral
Hall is a splendid place to sit and
watch the world go by or to just
simply stroll around and wonder at
the magnificent architecture.
Take a stroll where every step brings a new giggle.
The Comedy Carpet sits in the shadow of the world
famous Blackpool Tower and it’s one of the largest
pieces of public art ever commissioned in the UK.
There’s nothing like the British sense of humour and
the Comedy Carpet immortalises and celebrates the
jokes, songs and comedy catchphrases of Britain’s
most well-loved comedians and writers.
GRUNDY ART GALLERY
With a rolling programme of vibrant
temporary exhibitions to suit all tastes
from the classical to the contemporary,
the Grundy Art Gallery has been at the
heart of Blackpool’s cultural life since
1911. Cutting-edge work by Gilbert
and George, Martin Creed and other
provocateurs of recent British art are
just as likely to be found as traditional
oils, watercolours and historic
curiosities from a collection containing
almost 2,000 items.

GREAT PROMENADE SHOW
A giant mirror ball will leave you reflecting
on an aesthetically pleasing stretch of
rejuvenated promenade at South Beach.
It’s part of the Great Promenade Show
where some of the country’s top artists and
designers have created two kilometres of
gobsmacking sculptures and lighting. It’s
certainly a break from the norm for
Blackpool, but one that has gone down
a storm with visitors.
NOT ONE, NOT TWO,
BUT THREE PIERS….
Blackpool is the only UK seaside resort to have
three piers and what’s more, you can enjoy a
stroll on all three for FREE. The first pier to adorn
Blackpool’s golden sands was North Pier in
1863 and this, and its two neighbours are still
going strong. Despite changes to the buildings
they all remain true to the original concept
featuring a range of amusements, live music
and dancing.
North Pier was always the posh pier and remains
a wonderful place to enjoy a stroll over the Irish
Sea, while Central and South Piers represent
fun. Built in 1868, today Central Pier is very
much a family entertainment complex and South
Pier, built in 1893, houses big thrill rides and its
own fun fair.
Photograph: David Graham
MARTON MERE
Some thought it a bird-brained scheme,
but what was once the council’s rubbish
tip is now the town’s bio-diversity hot-spot
- a tranquil nature reserve on Blackpool’s
urban fringe that attracts twitchers from all
over the north. A Site of Special Scientific
Interest for its amazing birdlife, it also
supports dragonflies, butterflies, bats
and orchids. Follow the many
footpaths around the
site and visit the
birdwatching
hides.
STANLEY PARK
Just stroll, laze or play in this green haven,
where Blackpool shows its tranquil face to
beautiful effect. Transport yourself back to a
more innocent era with a game of bat and ball
on the acres of lush lawns or have a round of
mini golf. If that’s too energetic just sit back in
a rowing boat on the lake or stroll round the
ornate Italian gardens.
NORTHERN LIGHTS
The world-famous Blackpool
Illuminations need no introduction - the
facts speak for themselves. They cost
£2.4m to stage. The equipment is worth
£10m. They attract in excess of 3.5m
visitors to Blackpool every year. Visitors
spend more than £275m while visiting
the resort during the Lights. The display
stretches almost six miles from Starr
Gate to Bispham.
Less than 30 staff including artists,
electricians, joiners, mechanics, painters
and engineers work all year round to
ensure the displays are ready on time.
Altogether 65,000 staff hours are used
on maintenance, preparation, erection,
operation and - finally - dismantling the
features, fixtures and fittings.
Phew!
Oh, and it’s all free!

LIGHTS, CAMERA,
ACTION, BLACKPOOL
BIG BUDGET MOVIES, SOAP OPERAS, ADVERTISEMENTS, CHILDREN’S
SHOWS, DOCUMENTARIES – BLACKPOOL HAS A MAGNETIC APPEAL
FOR FILM AND TV PRODUCERS. HERE ARE JUST SOME OF THE EDITED
HIGHLIGHTS OF BLACKPOOL TAKING CENTRE STAGE:
"It embodies all the traditional
seaside holiday elements you
could wish for”
There’s barely a week when the resort isn’t
hosting a film crew for one reason or
another. And now it seems Blackpool is
the resort of choice for TV and online
commercials too.
In 2013 the resort enjoyed being featured
in a series of national Compare The
Meerkat commercials which ran alongside
top soap Coronation Street. And last year
VisitBlackpool, together with Merlin
Entertainments, who operate The
Blackpool Tower and its associated
attractions, Madame Tussauds and
SEA LIFE Blackpool, filmed and broadcast
a TV campaign throughout the summer
months.
Entitled “Blackpool’s Back”, the TV advert
was the perfect platform to showcase all
that the new-look Blackpool has to offer.
It was the first TV advertisement
promoting Blackpool as a destination for
many years and it told the story of a
fun-filled, action-packed weekend in
Blackpool through the eyes of a 10-yearold child.
Why through the eyes of a child?
Blackpool has an unrivalled concentration
of world-class family attractions, an
award-winning beach and, most of all it’s a
place that children love.
The resort has been attracting families for
more than a century and while it remains
the UK’s most visited seaside destination,
Blackpool’s Back was a way of reminding
those who have not been for a while that
there is nowhere quite like Blackpool.
Now is the perfect time to come and
re-live past experiences and also explore
the regenerated resort, creating new
memories that will last a lifetime.
In addition, TV viewers across the UK
saw Hollywood actor Kevin Bacon take
to the Big One at Blackpool Pleasure
Beach for an ad promoting mobile phone
network EE.
Blackpool Pleasure Beach also ran its
own TV advertising campaign with a
30-second commercial focusing on the
park’s white-knuckle rides. Managing
Director, Amanda Thompson OBE, said:
“Our 2014 advert was as exciting as the
many amazing rides and attractions we
have on offer here at Blackpool Pleasure
Beach.
And confectioners Nestlé chose
Blackpool as the backdrop for their
on-line campaign promoting a new KitKat
ice-cream. Did you see the donkeys
having a break at the end of a long day
with their ice-cream in hoof?
Location manager Mark Wilson worked
with The Mob Film Company to make the
Nestlé ad and said Blackpool was the
obvious choice.
He said: "We’re often asked for iconic
British landmarks at Film Locations, and
to be honest there are few better in the
UK than Blackpool and its Tower.
"It embodies all the traditional seaside
holiday elements you could wish for,
along with the hi-tech rollercoaster
Pleasure Beach, there’s many great
residential, suburban and countryside
locations. The local authorities are well
versed in Film Company requisites,
which all in all makes Blackpool a great
place to shoot."
Image provided by Us and Them Ideas
“We find TV advertising a really effective
medium in attracting visitors not only to us
but to the whole resort. At the end of the
day we want people to experience the
thrills and the many twists and turns of the
attractions and by using TV advertising we
hope the many people who see our
adverts will want to come and check out
Blackpool for themselves."

least one of Blackpool’s three piers –
North, South and Central. On South and
Central you can enjoy traditional

Blackpool’s oldest pier and hop on the
historic Carousel at the end.
And if you’ve still got some time, catch a
tram so you can ride through Blackpool’s
six miles of Promenade as a relaxing end
to your trip.
HOURS IN
BLACKPOOL?
With 48 hours to enjoy Blackpool be prepared for
an action packed couple of days
Blackpool is bursting with attractions,
eateries and entertainment so you will
have no problem at all filling two days in
the UK’s most popular seaside resort.

not mingle with your favourite stars from
stage and screen? Meet pop stars, sporting
heroes, royalty and comedians….and it
couldn’t be easier as all you need to do is
enter the world of Madame Tussauds.
Or if the mysteries of the deep are your

Blackpool. There’s everything from sharks
to seahorses and if you’re feeling really
brave, why not take a dip into one of the
deep tanks and actually swim with the
sharks!
DAY 2
When lunchtime beckons, why not
experience a delicious Afternoon Tea in the
Tower Ballroom and afterwards work off all
those scones and sandwiches by taking to
the floor and dancing to the sounds of the
Mighty Wurlitzer Organ.
If you prefer the outdoors, then head to the
beach with a picnic (if the weather permits)
or take time out to enjoy one of Blackpool’s
fabulous eateries. Whether it’s champagne
and oysters or fish and chips, Blackpool
can offer you every type of food that you
could ever wish for.
It’s impossible to visit Blackpool without
taking in one of the resort’s fabulous shows.
Blackpool comes alive at night and with
breathtaking theatre, awe-inspiring circus
and variety, and some of the greatest bars
and clubs in the UK, you will not be
disappointed.
If you’re visiting during the Illuminations
period, a drive down the prom is a must
and alternatively, Blackpool now boasts the
world’s largest indoor illuminations with
Illuminasia in the Winter Gardens.
Now head back to your hotel for a cocktail
and a good night’s rest.
Time for an action-packed day.
For the thrill-seekers among you, Blackpool
Pleasure Beach is an absolute must.
Boasting more than 125 rides the Pleasure
Beach has something for everyone with
family rides, fantastic white-knuckle
experiences and the UK’s only
Nickelodeon Land.
Simply wander around the beautiful Zoo
and enjoy watching the animals go about
their daily business or take the opportunity
to get up close with them. Blackpool Zoo
offers visitors a variety of experiences
including the opportunity to feed the big
cats and giraffes and you can even try
your hand at training a sea lion.
The park is also packed with a variety of
restaurants and shows so you can be
assured of a great day out which can be
extended into the evening. For animal
lovers, why not head out for a visit to
Blackpool Zoo. Home to more than 1,500
exotic animals including, lions, tigers and
elephants, the Zoo is a great place for
young and old, families and couples.
For total contrast and a perfect end to
the day, head to South Beach opposite
the Blackpool Pleasure Beach where you
can stroll along the 2km stretch, taking in
the unique pieces of modern art that make
up the Great Promenade Show.
And don’t forget, once you’re feeling
relaxed and rejuvenated after a packed
day, Blackpool still has a buzzing nightlife

enclosures surrounded by 32 acres of
beautiful trees, lakes and open space –
a veritable oasis for all ages in a busy
seaside resort.
All your favourites live here! From aardvarks
to zebras, cockroaches to giant Asian
elephants, our residents come in all shapes
and sizes. You can walk amongst them in
Amazonia, Lemur Wood and Wallaby

close encounters with giraffes, sealions
or a barn owl.
The Active Oceans arena is the biggest
and best in the UK and is home to our
Californian sealions. Daily displays
demonstrate natural behaviours and
children learn about Gina, Anya and the
rest whilst marvelling at their intelligence.
Amazonia replicates the South American
rainforests and is full of free-roaming
monkeys and many species of exotic
waterfowl and parrots. The Birds of the
World displays include birds of prey,
entertaining macaws, and even a troupe
of brown rats!
Meisie and Moanda. New babies in 2014
included tiger cubs, wolf pups, various
monkeys and Caribbean flamingos. Why
not check up on their progress?
You can enjoy a tasty meal or snack from
our catering outlets and don’t forget to buy
your souvenirs in one of the shops! There’s
even a huge indoor Play Barn next door if
your kids have any energy left! (There’s
Starbucks, too, Mums and Dads!)

flying the flag for clean BeacheS
Blackpool is proud to boast national awards for all four
of its beaches.
Richard McIlwain, Operations Director of Keep Britain
Tidy, which is responsible for the awards in England,
said: “Keep Britain Tidy campaigns to improve the quality
of our local environment and we know that communities
up and down the country love their beaches and
understand what an asset they are for their towns’
economies.
“We also know that cleaner beaches can be a focal point
for stronger communities. Holidaymakers and daytrippers want to visit clean, safe beaches and the sight of
the Blue Flag or Seaside Award flying gives them the
reassurance that they will.”
In 2014 charity Keep Britain Tidy announced Seaside
Awards for North, South, Central and Bispham beaches
– the full stretch of Blackpool’s coastline. The award
recognises and rewards beaches in England that achieve
the highest standards of beach management and, in the
case of bathing beaches, meet guideline water quality.
And it means Blackpool can fly the official Seaside
Award flag.

SIMPLE
PLEASURES
WE HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN THAT
A FISH SUPPER TREAT ON
BLACKPOOL’S WORLD FAMOUS
SEAFRONT IS ONE OF THE
“MUST DO” THINGS IN LIFE…
Now that simple pastime enjoyed by
generations of visitors over the years has
been confirmed as the best family
experience in England. The fish supper at
the end of Central Pier topped a 2014
poll to find the nation’s most enjoyable,
technology-free days out.
The new study on behalf of Egmont
Publishing and supported by VisitEngland,
lists a fascinating insight into lazy summer
days enjoyed by today’s adults when they
were growing up.
© Disney. Based on the “Winnie the Pooh” works by A.A. Milne and E.H.Shepard.
The results of the survey have now been
compiled into a specially commissioned
illustrated online story book entitled
“Simple Pleasures” and featuring
Christopher Robin, Winnie The Pooh and
friends as they go on an adventure
through the various experiences, starting
right here in Blackpool…
ENJOYING A FISH SUPPER ON
BLACKPOOL PIER, LANCASHIRE
Piglet stood looking at the long wooden
pier and wondered if it would be safe to
step on. Maybe it would be safer to just
stay where they were. He took Pooh’s
hand, in case Pooh was frightened.
‘It’ll probably rain soon,’ said Eeyore
gloomily.
But Pooh wasn’t listening. He had
noticed a rather nice sensation in his
nose and was following it down the pier,
with Piglet trotting cautiously behind
him.
Tigger bounced down the pier. After all,
that is what Tiggers do best.
Pooh stopped and sniffed once. Then he
sniffed twice. Then he turned around a
couple of times. It seemed to be that the
source of deliciousness was coming from
a newspaper.
For a bear of very little brain, this was
very confusing. Pooh scratched his nose.
Weren’t newspapers meant for reading?
And not for smelling quite so inviting?
But Christopher Robin explained that it
wasn’t the paper itself, but what was in
that paper that smelled so nice —
a ‘Fish Supper’.
Pooh thought it might be time for a
little smackerel of something.

the UK and lies at the foot of The

2,200sq-metre sized joke book. Referring
to the work of more than 1,000 comedians

more than 160,000 granite letters

boundaries of public art and typography
to their limits.
Blackpool enjoys a pretty impressive street
art scene attracting artists from across the
globe to paint incredible features around
the resort. Former DJ-turned-artist Robin
Ross is responsible for the town’s
explosion of colour and believes it’s a great
way of attracting visitors.
“The great thing about street art
is that it can appeal to all,”
said Robin. “This town has some
amazing artwork and we are
recognised globally for it.”
Robin turned his hand to arts after a lifelong
interest in images and style. Back in 2003
he developed the idea of an Art in the Park
exhibition in Blackpool and more recently
has organised the Sand, Sea and Spray
street art festival.

music scenes and the history of British piers.
Visitors can also get involved in the Grundy’s

MORE THAN JUST LIGHT
BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS IS THE UK’S MOST FAMOUS LIGHT
SHOW – AND ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC SIGHTS IN BRITISH
CULTURE. AS SUMMER DRAWS TO A CLOSE, THE RESORT IS
BATHED IN A SEA OF LIGHT…..
With more than a million lights stretching
along six miles of the famous Promenade,
it is little wonder that generation after
generation make the annual trip to
Blackpool to celebrate this great British
event.
Holidaymakers’ first experience of the
Illuminations was back in 1879 when just
EIGHT arc lamps lit up the seafront in what
was then described as “artificial sunshine”.
The principle might be the same, but the
sheer scale, style and professionalism of this
fantastic free show make it something very
different! It now features miles of festoons
and tableaux, attracting upwards of three
million visitors a year and its enduring
popularity showing no sign of abating.
The 2014 display revealed a number of
exciting new features, including work by the
Illuminations’ creative force, Laurence
Llewelyn-Bowen, who unveiled a stunning
new tableau on the Cliffs at the north end of
the display.
Drawing on the story of Alice in Wonderland,
the design features an enchanting water
garden, an 8ft-long bridge and a version of
the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, featuring a very
unusual guest in the shape of Harry The
Hound, the mascot of the tableau sponsor,
Houndshill Shopping Centre.
2015 will see yet more innovative designs as
the Illuminations offer is refreshed and
reinvented for yet another generation of
visitors. Be sure to look out for details.

Since opening in 2012 The Wedding

“We do see some rather unusual weddings
from time to time and that is great,” added
Dawn.
“We’ve had biker weddings, punks during
the punk festival, a groom in a penguin suit
and even a bride who arrived in a hearse as
it was Halloween.
“It doesn’t matter though because if that’s
how you want to get married then we will
do our utmost to make your day as special
as possible.”
“When people walk into The
Wedding Chapel they are
making probably the biggest
commitment of their life and
to be able to be a part of that is
an honour.”
HOLIDAY MARRIAGE?
The Wedding Chapel is available to
everyone visiting Blackpool but there are
certain guidelines if you do not live in
England or Wales. You must spend seven
consecutive nights in Blackpool in the year
leading up to your wedding and with a high
number of the weddings that take place
actually being for people visiting Blackpool,
Dawn said it’s really important that people
are aware of the law.
prior to their wedding. “We are very
popular with couples from Scotland and
the Isle of Man but we have also had
people travel from wider Europe. One that
stands out in particular is a couple from
Austria who lived in the Tyrol and therefore
panoramic countryside, but who wanted to
get married by the sea and therefore their
perfect wedding spot was Blackpool’s
Wedding Chapel.”
She said: “About a quarter of all our
ceremonies are for people who live outside
the area and many times that is people
who do not live in England and Wales and
therefore they must stay in the resort

LANCASHIRE
Take a short drive or train journey
out of Blackpool and you’ll
discover a county bursting with
history, stunning countryside,
market towns, culinary hotspots
and unique events.
The city of Preston is on your doorstep
with free family attractions such as
Brockholes nature reserve and the Harris
Museum & Art Gallery, as well as historic
houses such as Samlesbury Hall with its
resident ghost.
Whether you fancy rambling in the Forest
of Bowland, exploring a museum or art
gallery, sampling the delights of a farm
shop or simply enjoying a day out by the
seaside, Lancashire has it all.
The historic city of Lancaster with its
winding cobbled streets, hilltop castle,
great dining and cultural events, is an ideal

Across Lancashire you’ll find a range of
pubs, restaurants, cafes and tearooms

seafood menu.
The Wellbeing Farm in Edgeworth holds a

If you’re looking for something a little more
energetic, Lancashire is bursting with
cycling routes. To the west are flat coastal
plains where you will find a network of rural
lanes linking villages, farmland and coastal
resorts. The east of the county becomes
more challenging, as you climb up into the
Bowland Fells and Pennine Hills or follow
the winding river valleys of the Lune and
Ribble for scenic journeys and dramatic
landscapes. For the brave, Gisburn Forest
and Lee Quarry offer off-road trails, dirt
jumping and down-hill drops!
You don’t even need to bring your own
bike as there are automated cycle hire
stations across and there’s even an electric
bike hire scheme for help on those
troublesome hills.

LYTHAM ST ANNES…
A COASTAL GEM
WITH DISTINGUISHED CHARM AND WIDE-RANGING
APPEAL THE FYLDE OFFERS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
From exhilarating walks and nostalgic
seaside fun to speciality shops, a huge
selection of restaurants and designer
boutiques, you will never be short of
something to do – whether it is in the
picturesque Fylde countryside or in the
coastal resorts of Lytham and St Annes.
April sparks the start of the events season
with the annual St George’s Day Festival
which is fast becoming one of the country’s
largest celebrations for honouring this
momentous day.
This year’s spectacular highlight is The
Lytham Festival held in early August. This
musical extravaganza has seen the likes of
Sir Tom Jones, Katherine Jenkins and
Lesley Garrett performing along with pop
stars from the 1980s and 90s.
August’s 1940s Wartime Festival is also a
popular event providing a whole weekend
of family fun and Lytham’s Lowther Pavilion
has a year-round programme of varied
entertainment. On quieter days you can sit
and watch the world go by as a kite flies in
the sky, a family cricket game gets
underway and a couple share a portion of
fish and chips from one of the area’s
award winning establishments.
