Chapter L in Lawton has cancelled their July meeting since it would be on July 4th. Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge 1 The Heat is On It’s hot outside! Summertime has definitely come early to Oklahoma. As I write this, it was 97 degrees today with a heat index well above 100 degrees. It was definitely hot on the range as I coached a MSF course today. It’s always good to watch people learn and grow in their confidence and skill on a motorcycle though. Even though it is hot outside, we are in the middle of riding season. I know our Chapter Educators are actively reminding all of us of the dangers of hyperthermia and the importance of keeping hydrated and taking extra precautions when riding in the heat. If you are a new member or are not familiar with these issues, please ask your Chapter Educator or feel free to contact me and I will happy to provide the information or put you in touch with someone. We want to make sure that everyone stays safe! Not only is the temperature hot outside, it is hot within the chapters in the Oklahoma District! Gina and I have visited several chapters in the past couple of weeks. It has been great to see so many of our friends and to participate in the chapter gatherings. However, we got to see many of you several times. It was great to be with Chapter L in Lawton one night, then with Chapter G in Bartlesville the next night and to see participants from other chapters at each of them. Not only were there guest at both, but also many were the same guests who had also traveled to both locations. I want to give a shout out to John Irons for coordinating the Oklahoma District’s first District Traveler award. I have seen a significant increase in chapter visitations and in chapter participation since we initiated the traveler award. It is really great to see the excitement growing in the chapters that are participating. It really is amazing how active participation in chapter life helps our both our individual members and our chapters. If you haven’t been participating in your chapter, let me encourage you to do so. I especially encourage you to help your chapter by attending chapter gatherings of other chapters. The race for the District Traveler award is very close. The heat is on! Johnie Fredman Oklahoma District Director July, 2016 Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge 2 THE ENTIRE STAFF AT SHAWNEE HONDA WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE OVER 18000 CUSTOMERS FROM ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES WHO HAVE PURCHASED FROM US IN THE FIRST 7 YEARS OF BUSINESS AND THE MANY OTHERS THAT HAVE COME THRU THE DOOR TO SAY HI. YOU ARE THE REASON SHAWNEE HONDA IS ON OF THE TOP 5 HONDA DEALERSHIPS IN THE UNITED STATES. THANK YOU!!!! July, 2016 Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge 3 Our Oklahoma District Membership Enhancement Coordinators John & Shawn Irons Insight “You Need to Participate” Hello to all our fellow Oklahoma GWRRA district members. Here we are at the end of June. Seems like it was just yesterday when the temperatures were below just above freezing and we were just trying to stay warm. Now we are in the riding season and it won’t be long before we are raking the leaves. Time is passing way too quickly. It seems like the older we get, the faster time passes. This month, we had the opportunity to go to Chapter M in Muskogee. What a great, excited chapter. You know it is fun when you can have 16 members and 23 guests. Great job Chapter Director Robert Jackson and his team. We are so excited to see all of the chapters that are taking part in Travel Award Miles Program. Chapter-K is still in the lead. Chapter-P and Chapter-X following close behind. Watch out because the sleeper is Chapter-B. Never count them out. Since this is the riding season, now is the time to get out and visit another chapter gathering. The workshop will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 516 W. 3rd, Stillwater, 11am to 1pm. Both couples and all Chapter Directors should attend to see the process for choosing and honoring a deserving couple in your chapter for Couple of the Year. After the workshop, we will go over and eat at the world renouned Hideaway Pizza. You will love the food. Please RSVP if you can make it. What we want to talk about this month is chapter participation. Your chapter needs you to be an active part of it. You can’t help but notice that the total number of active chapter members is way lower than the total number of members assigned to the chapter. Why is that? Why are the other half of our members not participating in chapter gatherings, rides and events? This has been something we have been wondering about. Everything we do is geared towards having fun so why wouldn’t the rest of our members want to join us for that fun? Why would members be happy July, 2016 Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge 4 just reading the magazine each month when they could be joining us for the great times we have on our rides and at our events? We have to figure out a way to bring them out to our rides and events. Chapter Directors and MEC’s have to work together to reach out to these non-active members to find out why they are not joining us. We all get the monthly printout of members and prospective members. We have their addresses and their telephone numbers. We have to call the non-active members. Better yet, hop on your motorcycle and just ride over and say hi. Talk to them and see what we can do to entice them to join us in the fun. Let them know that we are missing them. Retention is a major factor in chapters staying alive. We need to recruit new members. Here is an idea for July. Pick a Saturday or Sunday and do a morning breakfast ride. Put on your parade dress chapter shirt, along with your vest and go to your favorite restaurant. When you get in, go around and pass out GWRRA motorcycle awareness information. Pass out hangtags for a free copy of the Wing World magazine. Talk up GWRRA. SHOW OFF YOUR GOLDWING. Invite people to your gathering, ride or event. Let them know that they don’t have to own a Goldwing to participate. The key to GWRRA surviving is new members. We hate to admit that some of our members are getting “more mature”, like fine-aged wine. This has resulted in their decreased membership. We need to replenish our ranks with younger members that will carry on the tradition. We can let people know what our motto really means of “FRIENDS-FUN-SAFETYKNOWLEDGE” Ok District Chapter Gathering for May 2016 Chapter Chapter B Chapter E Chapter G Chapter I Chapter J Chapter K Chapter L Chapter M Chapter N Chapter P Chapter X Members 23 19 10 5 10 13 12 18 16 28 15 Visitors 2 17 13 9 0 6 12 8 3 0 20 Guest 0 0 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 John & Shawn Irons Oklahoma District MEC [email protected] 405-747-4618 July, 2016 Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge 5 July, 2016 Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge 6 Our Oklahoma Assistant MEC Director and District Chapter of the Year Coordinators Linda & Bill Stevens Chapter of the Year History The Chapter of the Year Program was created and designed in 2007 to stimulate Chapters to strive for excellence within their respective District and Region. Secondly it is to find and recognize the best of the best Chapters within GWRRA. GWRRA Chapter of the Year Goal The goal of the Chapter of the Year Program is to get more Chapters involved in all of the GWRRA’s programs and FUN activities that have been proven successful for many of the active and growing Chapters throughout GWRRA. Chapters that enter into the Chapter of the Year Program and are not selected as the District, Region or GWRRA International Chapter of the Year, will be a stronger, healthier Chapter for their efforts. Many of the scoring areas are measured in percentages to ensure that small and large Chapters alike have an equal chance in winning. 2014 GWRRA International Chapter of the Year Region H, Stillwater Oklahoma Chapter X Chapter Directors - Marie & Steve Wilson Chapter of the Year Coordinator - Linda and Bill Stevens A complete list of all previous GWRRA International Chapters of the Year can be found at http://mep.gwrra.org/choy.html Disqualifiers If a Chapter was selected as the 2014 District Chapter of the Year they cannot be selected as the 2015 Chapter of the Year. A 2014 District Chapter of the Year must wait one year to compete in this program again. All Chapters, including the 2014 District Chapter of the Year can participate in the Gold, Silver and Bronze part of this program, if the District elects to participate in this part of the Chapter of the Year Program. If a Chapter is selected as the 2014 International Chapter of the Year, they must wait three years to compete in this program again. As stated above, they may participate in the Gold, Silver and Bronze part of the program. PG*This page was copied from the 2015 Chapter of the Year Guide. This is also the guide being used for 2016. Please note the goals and the disqualifiers! If you have any questions about Chapter of the Year, please call me, 580-336-2390. Remember…I want to help you in your efforts! July, 2016 Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge 7 Our Oklahoma District Couple of Year John & Sarah Hoogendoorn Another busy two months since writing the last article of the district newsletter. We have kept busy by attending rallies in Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri, as well as trying to get in a few state parks, and by visiting OK Chapters in support of the Chapter Couple of the Year Program. We are racking up the mileage with all of these activities, but we are not complaining because we are having FUN and making new FRIENDS. We always find FUN where ever we go. We are making plans for Wing Ding. From the reports we are hearing, this is shaping up to be one of the best attended Wing Dings ever. We are looking forward to it. Can't wait to take some of the guided tours through that part of our great country. We believe Montana is known as Big Sky country with wide open spaces.....can hardly wait!!! You know as we have visited the chapters here in Oklahoma, it has been so much FUN the watch the friendship and good-natured bantering back and forth with chapter members. GWRRA gives everyone a chance to "let their hair down" - so to speak. It is great to see people laughing at each other’s mistakes or colossal boo boos, and the tender support offered to each other when they have illnesses or cause to mourn. Then the carry over when chapters meet together, whether it be at our anniversary parties or at district sponsored activities - it just gives you an outlet for being a kid again....which is great FUN!!! If you are not having FUN at these gatherings, try "letting your hair down" and see how much fun it can be again to relive childhood once more. Of these things, making FRIENDSHIPS that can last a lifetime, is all about!!! Another thing we have noticed in visiting the Oklahoma chapters is the lack of Chapter Couples around the state. Not sure of the "why" for that. Having a Chapter Couple is a great way of honoring one couple in your chapter for all they do for the chapter. The program is not intended to put extra work on that couple nor greater expectations of them. You, as a chapter couple, can continue on being the same people you always were, but with a knowledge that the chapter has noticed your hard work and wants to recognize you for that. You are not expected to go on and be considered for the District Couple, only if you want to pursue that avenue. This, in turn, gives our district a chance to be recognized. John Irons has planned a Chapter a Couple of the Year workshop to be held in Stillwater on July 16. Anyone interested in finding out more about COY program are encouraged to attend. It is a luncheon and John Irons will need an RSVP if you would like go. Contact him at 405-377-1558 and he can give you the particulars about the meeting. Steve and Carolyn Cotton are competing at Wing Ding this year as Couple of the Year, nationally. We wish them the best of luck and know they will make Oklahoma proud!!!! If you are at Wing Ding, make sure you sit in on the Couple of the Year selection process and support Steve and Carolyn!!!!! Well, the "soap box" is getting wobbly, so it is time to get down. Until the next article, we wish you and yours well and let "Life be your journey, and ENJOY THE RIDE!!!!!!!" July, 2016 Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge 8 GWRRA Member publishes book about Motorcycling Everybody has a story, especially if you travel by motorcycle. New author Terri Bockhaus will be at the Oklahoma District Rally to debut her new book titled, “It’s all about the Journey”. The book is a collection of short stories detailing her journey from riding on the back of her husband’s motorcycle to being one of a handful of female riders nationwide to perform on a motorcycle drill team. The book chronicles her mishaps as she learns to ride her own motorcycle, and many funny (and sometimes scary) things that have happened on some of their trips. She uses humor and her ability to laugh at herself to promote safe motorcycling. You don’t have to be a biker to enjoy this book. Terri and her husband Steve were involved in a serious motorcycle wreck in 2004. During their recovery, they were introduced to the Goldwing Road Riders Association (GWRRA), an organization that promotes safe motorcycle riding. Terri said that she has always enjoyed riding on motorcycles, but never thought of owning one, let alone riding on a motorcycle drill team. She has always dreamed of having her original writings published. She believes that through her love of writing and riding that she has brought a glimpse of her passion of both to the reader. Terri and her husband Steve live in Newton, Kansas. They are members of GWRRA Kansas, Chapter A, and the Kansas Twisters Motorcycle Drill Team. You may have taken a CPR class that they have taught. Terri is looking forward to chatting with you and autographing a book for you at the Oklahoma District Rally. July, 2016 Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge 9 OHP Safe Riders Course September 10, 2016 Ponca City Airport, Ponca City, Oklahoma Ponca City Chapter K will be hosting the OHP Safe Riders Course on September 10, 2016 at the Ponca City Airport located at Waverly and Sykes Blvd. There is required equipment. Motorcycle, ODOT approved helmet, eye protection, long sleeve shirt or jacket, Jean style pants, over the ankle boots, riding gloves. On the day of class each operator will be required to show proof of insurance and a valid driver’s license with an 'M' endorsement at registration. OHP suggests that everyone bring a sack lunch. They allow one hour for lunch but they do cover items at the mobile classroom during lunch. They provide water. The course was modified to allow three wheel vehicles. They allow two up now. Before the passenger is allowed on the bike the rider must show proficiency to the line instructor. (For example-there is six attempts minimal in the offset course, if the rider takes four attempts to show proficiency then the passenger may ride the remaining two attempts). Registration begins at 0800. Class is usually done by 1600. They do break for lunch but suggest bringing a sack lunch. The lead instructor will be going over some things at lunch. They provide water for the riders. If you are interested in attending the training email me with the following information: Name as you want it to appear on the Certificate, phone number, email address We will honor the first 25 applications. I will send a return email indicating if you are in the first 25 or not. July, 2016 Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge 11 July, 2016 Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge 12 Our Oklahoma District MAP Kay Smith Happy Hot Summer Riders It seems that summer riding is here and it has come in as a hot one so far. As the heat goes on the gear comes off to a lot of people. As we go riding in all of our gear I notice so many riders without the gear on and think that is so sad. I know the heat is on and climbing but our skin, head, brains, and lives are still worth protecting. I want to keep what I have for the rest of my life of riding and enjoying life all together. The gear may go from a heavy jacket to a long sleeve shirt but it still protecting me from the sun burned skin, road rash, and the sting of the bugs that fly into my body. The rest of the gear consists of the long pants, over the ankle footwear, gloves, helmet, and protective eye wear is still the requirements of a long and protected riding life ahead. In a sudden moment the enjoyment can change to fun in the sun to pain, scrubbing of what skin you have left, and possibly of a long recovery. The long term effects of not having all the gear is early aging of the skin, winkles, sun spots, and possible cancer of the skin. I am not saying if the accident happens the gear may not be enough to save me from the effects of injury. I don’t like the odds that if the gear wasn’t there it could be worst. I will take all the gear all the time and enjoy my life of riding. My gear also includes the bright colors, reflective clothing and outer wear, and lots of lights to be seen as we enjoy the beautiful world on the road. We also dress for the heat with cool vest , and warm gear when it is cold. Make yourself be seen and have the sad not protected people be jealous that we plan to be healthy, happy and full of a long riding life ahead. So don’t be one of those sad riders that think it is so much fun to ride with the shorts, flip-flops, no helmet and eye wear that the effects are worth the chances that it won’t affect their future life. not just riding but their whole life ahead. Wear All the Gear All the Time and enjoy your life!!!!!!! There may be additional prizes awarded for various accomplishments, for instance: who used the most gas? Who rode the most miles? Who did 20 of the state parks in the shortest amount of time? How many times did you ride in the rain? What was the most number of state parks you visited in a single 2-day weekend? There is no limit to what we might have door prizes for. Entrants need not be present to win cash awards, but must be present for any other prizes. Cash winners will be notified and may make arrangements to pick up their winnings from Johnie Fredman. A dinner and drawing for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place cash awards will be held in early 2017. Date and location to be announced at the conclusion of the “contest”.
