Wales
Welcome to the land of the Celts,
whose culture has influenced British
history over 3,000 years. Farming
communities are the very heartland
of Wales, where old traditions live on
and Welsh is still spoken in many
homes.
From the gentle greenery of mid
Wales to the distinctive landscapes of
the National Parks, the Welsh
countryside brings a choice of
scenery – and outdoor activities –
right to the farmhouse door. The
Snowdonia National Park, with its
peaks, waterfalls and clear mountain
streams takes its name from Mount
Snowdon, whose 3000ft summit is
scaled by a breathtaking railway.
Other highlights of the park include
picture-postcard Betws-y-Coed,
Blaenau Ffestiniog – home of another
scenic railway – and Harlech with its
mighty castle, just one of 400 in
Wales! Coastal attractions here in
North Wales range from enchanting
Portmeirion, a private village of
architectural follies created by Clough
Williams Ellis to Llandudno, complete
with donkeys on the beach or the
mystic Isle of Anglesey, beckoning
from across the Menai Bridge.
2
There’s more magic in the coastline
of Pembrokeshire’s National Park,
with its superb beaches and cliffs,
coastal walks and tiny islands like
Caldey, with its monastery, or
Skomer – alive with seals, puffins
and other seabirds. Popular towns
here include picturesque Fishguard,
walled Tenby and St David’s, whose
12th-century cathedral lies concealed
in a hollow to hide it from predatory
eyes. To the east, the Brecon
Beacons National Park brings yet
more variety: its bare escarpments
and mining valleys provide
memorable views, and there are
attractive little towns like nearby Hayon-Wye, a world-famous centre for
second-hand books.

Just follow the valleys for a day out
in Cardiff’s superb castle, museums
and shops or maritime Swansea,
where an excellent museum tells the
story
of Wales and the sea. Right on
Swansea’s doorstep is the Gower
Peninsula – a charmed corner of
beaches, cliffs and smugglers coves
beloved of Dylan Thomas, whose
former home is open to the public
along the coast at Laugharne.

This Northern gateway to Wales is
the perfect way to introduce
visitors to the country. There are
four coastal resorts and awardwinning beaches of Llandudno,
Colwyn Bay, Rhyl or Prestatyn. This
area of North Wales certainly has
some surprises up its sleeve:
while Llangollen takes a surreal
turn in the summer when
traditionally-dressed groups
from around the world visit the
International Music Festival.
Come see for yourself.

The Isle of Anglesey has a lot to
offer, starting with a 125-mile
coastline strewn with stirring
wildlife, cosy resorts, laid-back
beaches and high-octane
watersports. There’s a chance to
polish up on your tongue-twisting
double ‘ll’s and ‘ch’s, with the
largely Welsh-speaking population
to hand. After all that, grab some
fresh-as-they-come seafood and
a pint of ‘cwrw’and you’ll be
ready to relax island-style.
Champion, as the islanders
might say.

National Park but also the rural,

Peninsula. Unleash the sports
enthusiast in you, if windsurfing
or a walk around the Llyn
Peninsula seems too daunting,
try golf or a quest to find
ancient carp in the rocky

Ceredigion
Pembrokeshire
Cardigan Bay
Britain’s Coastal National Park
Regional Map 5 (page 2)
Regional Map 6 (page 2)
For the smell of fresh coastline and
country air, head straight to
Ceredigion. When you’re not
sampling the fine, uncrowded
beaches of the Ceredigion coast,
head into the Cambrian Mountains
and the Teifi Valley for the fresh
farm and country air. Although
they’re more than fond of a spot
of canoeing in these parts, old
habits die hard and you’ll still
see the odd coracle skimming
along the River Teifi.
Pembrokeshire scores highly on
the chill out factor. It boasts
Britain’s only coastal National Park,
take your pick of plentiful top-notch
beaches. The county is as colourful
as they come, with pastel coloured
villages, bird-specked islands and
an impressive cluster of artists
dabbing away at the easels.
When sea kayaking or beach
riding isn’t enough, there’s
always Pembrokeshire’s very
own sport of ‘coasteering’.

WYE VALLEY & VALE OF USK Wales
Wye Valley & Vale of Usk
Brecon Beacons National Park, Monmouth, Monmouthshire

Regional Map 9 (page 2)
It’s a tale of two valleys in this
pretty area of Wales, with the
pastoral Usk and wooded
Wye both beloved of poets and
artists alike. The southern gateway
into Wales is a gentle experience,
with strolls around pretty market
towns, a gentle spot of walking or
fishing and the time-ravaged
sights of castles and abbeys.
Those in the know will still
come year after year for the
sight of bluebell-scattered
Tintern Abbey.
