Child Rights Organization Reaches Out to Bay Area
News The Pioneer Thursday, May 29, 2008 8 Child Rights Organization Reaches Out to Bay Area Water Conservation Perks For EBMUD Customers By Traci Noffsinger Metro Editor F or children in India who are suffering from malnourishment, abuse or the lack of education, there is help coming from a U.S.-based group with a branch in the Bay Area. Child Rights and You (CRY) has been working with children, parents and communities to fund and bring a change to the lives of children, either in India or the United States, since 2002. According to their website, the mission of CRY America is to enable people to take responsibility for the situation of underprivileged children and motivate them to confront the situation through collective action, giving children and themselves an opportunity to realize their full potential. “We partner with CRY, an Indian NGO (non-governmental organization) that has been working in the area of child rights for over 25 years,” the CRY website states. “CRY has impeccable standards of accountability and transparency and has developed highly effective planning, monitoring and evaluation systems that are applied to each of the projects that we fund in India.” On May 21, CRY America hosted a conference in San Francisco to inform people from around the Bay Area of the situation in India and what they can do to help. Among those who participated in the panel was Shefali Sunderlal, the president of CRY America. “Rights of children are violated every day across the world,” Sunderlal said at the conference. “Yet, in sheer numbers, what is happening in India is mind-boggling. India must take accountability and live up to the promise it made when it acknowledged child rights in its constitution (even if it is equated with human rights) and by its ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child. This is not just an ‘India’ problem, but a ‘global’ one. It requires an international call to make child rights a priority.” Since formed, CRY has helped change the lives of 156,503 children in India. Over 500 people have volunteered and helped over 1,000 villages. The core of CRY is volunteers, who work at action centers around the United States. The Bay Area action center was started in 2003 and is led by Amit Saxena, a software engineer at Cisco Systems who earned his bachelor’s degree from MMM Engineering College in Gorakhpur, India. This year, the Bay Area action center will host a fundraising walk 2008, the third walk in the Bay Area since 2006, and the fifth walk since CRY America was started in 2002. The walk will be the first this summer with other major cities participating throughout the season. The Bay Area walk will take place on June 15 at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View. The event comprises a 5 km/10 km walk and for those who want to participate, they will need to register for a nominal fee and can also collect pledges which will go toward supporting projects in India. U.S. participants will receive a free t-shirt, a goodie bag and the chance to win tickets to a Giants baseball game. Indian food and drinks will be provided. Conservation, from page 2. • Using water for decorative ponds, lakes and fountains except those that recycle the water. • Washing vehicles with hoses that do not contain shutoff nozzles. • Washing sidewalks, patios and similar hard surfaces. • Irrigating outdoors on consecutive days or more than three days a week. • Watering lawns or gardens in ways that cause excessive run-off. • Flushing sewers and hydrants with drinkable water or using it to wash streets. • Using drinking water for construction uses if alternatives are available. • Using drinking water for soil compaction and dust control when another source is available. Customers’ allotment of water will be determined by their past water bills. Each household will be asked to cut water usage by 19 percent, but those that use less than 100 gallons of water per day will be exempt from any additional charges on your bill. However, customers who use more than 90 percent of their allotted water will receive a two dollar surcharge on your bill for each unit of water. A unit of water is 748 gallons of water. Customers who do cut their water usage by 19 percent will receive a reduction on their bill. The drought rates will be determined at a meeting of the EBMUD board of directors on July 8 at EBMUD, 375 Eleventh Street, Oakland. Customers of EBMUD are welcome to attend the meeting. The decisions made at this meeting will be implemented Aug. 1. For more information on how to conserve water or how the rates may affect you, visit ebmud.com. Supreme Court’s recent decision in support of marriage equality,” his website said. Barbara Lee, the Congresswoman running for reelection to represent the Ninth Congressional District, said “I believe that loving and committed same-sex couples should have the right to get married, receive legal recognition of their marriage in the eyes of the government and exercise all the legal benefits associated with their marriage.” “I am opposed to any effort that seeks to create a narrowly defined legal definition of marriage that excludes the right of same-sex couples to marry or to have their existing marriage recognized,” she said. “In line with that, I also do not believe that any samesex couple should be denied the opportunity to adopt children and provide a loving home to children who may otherwise be left in foster care systems.” One of Lee’s opponents, James Eyer, had a similar response, but referred to the fact that the U.S. Constitution says nothing about marriage, “So there is no role for the federal government (in the Movie Listings FREMONT CASTRO VALLEY CINEDOME 8 FREMONT CINELUX CHABOT CINEMA Highway 880 at Mowry (510) 790-0866 All Screens with “H” & “W” The Strangers (R) 11:55, 2, 4, 6:05, 8:15, 10:20 21 (PG-13) 2:30, 7:40 Lunch Buffet All You Can Eat!! $6.95 Monday to Saturday 11:00 am to 2:30 pm Open 7 Days a Week Lunch 11:00 am to 2:30 pm Dinner 2:30 pm to 10:00 pm 1235 A Street, Hayward, CA 94541 Ph: 510-583-7550, Fax: 510-583-7549 Order on Line at: www.favoriteindia.com Catering for all Occasions Free Delivery Hayward, Castro Valley and Parts of San Leandro and San Lorenzo (Minium Applies) Connect with CSUEB through The Pioneer during the summer........ • News • Editorial • Movie Guide • Dining • Events • Classified • and more!!
