Seeing eye to eye
in whales’ world

“Most whale photos
you see are distant
shades of blue in the
shape of the whale, and
that’s because the photographer is chasing the
whale,” Austin said.
“There are pressures to
get the shot, deadlines,
editors and producers
in New York to please.
But we take away the
whales’ natural curiosity when we chase
after them.”
The inspiration to
document whales in a
new way evolved from
Austin’s first job out of
UC Santa Cruz, conducting sea otter research for the California
Department of Fish and
Wildlife. While maintaining rescue and release records on individual pairs of sea otters, he began photographing them from

alities. That led to regular trips in one of his
professor’s boats to take
pictures of dolphins and
whales. But it still
wasn’t close enough.
In 2004, Austin
booked a trip to the
Kingdom of Tonga in
the South Pacific. After
Austin waited for
weeks, a 5-week-old calf
left its mother’s side
and swam around Austin. The calf maneuvered his fluke within a
foot of the photographer’s mask. Austin
then felt a tap on his
shoulder, turned and
was eye to eye with the
mother, who had gently
touched him with her
2-ton pectoral fin.
“I distinctly got the
sense she was letting
me know that she was
keeping an eye on me
near her baby.”
Although Bryant was
in a dangerous position,
between mother and
calf, the two whales
turned their massive
bodies purposefully and
carefully so as to not
hit him. Austin watched
the muscles ripple under their skin as they
swam away.
The encounter made
Austin realize what had
been missing from
whale photography:
intimacy. On the
whales’ terms.
Shortly after that trip,
Austin quit his job, sold
his car and the fifthwheel camper he lived
in at the sea otter lab in
Santa Cruz, and cashed
out his retirement savings to pursue his passion.
“I wanted to let people know what’s behind
a whale’s eye,” he said.
He felt an urgency to
share the majesty of
whales, in the hopes of
saving them from fishing nets, hunters, and
ultimately, extinction.
He made many mistakes along the way. He
returned to Tonga, but
wasn’t mindful to keep
the sun at his back
while shooting, resulting
in a batch of useless
black silhouettes. Bad
weather beached him
for weeks at a time. He
hadn’t yet learned that
whales will come closer
if he stretched his body
flat on the surface of
the water. When he
eventually ran out of
money without creating
a life-size portrait of a
whale, he wondered
whether he was chasing
a ridiculous idea. Fundraising wasn’t going so
well. His mother was
getting worried.
Finally, he crossed
paths in 2008 with the
right donor — an art
lover who managed an
“ethical” investment
fund based in Australia.
The investor was captivated by Austin’s work
and funded a pair of
five-week expeditions
for Austin to Dominica
and Australia. This
time, Austin got the
shots.
At one point, a
humpback calf rested
its underside on Austin’s back, then gently
swept its 4-foot-long
pectoral fin around
Austin’s stomach in
what felt like an embrace. An assistant
reached out for Austin’s
arm and slowly pulled
him away.
In all his time with
whales, Austin said he’s
never felt in danger,
because he waits for the
whales to make all the
decisions.
His photos were first
exhibited in Norway
and Japan, two countries where whale hunting is still allowed, and
sparked new conversations about whale conservation. His book,
“Beautiful Whale,” was
released this year.
Now that his work is
finally on display, his
book is out and his
photos are selling, Austin is beginning to feel
that all the periods of
anxiety and sacrifice
were worth it.
These days, Austin
splits his time between
the Santa Lucia Preserve, where he and his
fiancee are caretakers
on an estate surrounded
by deer, bobcat, wild
turkeys and boar, and
the frigid waters of
Monterey Bay, where he
is practicing free dives
to prepare for his next
expedition.
“I want to photograph killer whales in
the Arctic Circle,” he
said.

he will do it.
