Alex Cline
Dublin Jerome High School
Dublin Jerome’s Alex Cline represents the OCC-Cardinal.
Alex is a two-year letterman for the Celtics, as well as the
winner of the team’s Ironman Award and named 1st Team AllOCC.
Alex is also a member of the basketball team and participates in the Celtic Advisory program. He’s vice president of
the National Honor Society. Outside of school, he is an AAU
girls’ basketball coach and works with the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging.
Alex holds a 4.3 GPA and is undecided on where he will
attend college. He is the son of Jim and Patti Cline and was
coached in football by Mark Hundley.
Jacob Shuford
Walnut Ridge High School
Jacob Shuford represents the Columbus City League South
Division. He was co-captain of the Walnut Ridge football
team where he was a three-year letter winner and a two time
academic MVP.
He also is a member of the wrestling and track teams.
Outside of sports, Jacob is vice president of the student government and a member of the National Honor Society. He
has received the Academic Excellence award and is a member
of the Super Honor Roll.
Jacob has a 3.86 GPA and will attend the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the son of Tracy Shuford
and was coached in football by Byron Mattox.

Maurice Chatman
Mifflin High School
Mifflin’s Maurice Chatman is the representative from the
Columbus City League North Division. He was team captain and
named All-City.
He is a member of the track team and was a district qualifier on the wrestling team. Maurice also participates in Upward
Bound and is a senior class officer. He is the recipient of the
Principal’s Award, and was also named to the Super Honor Roll.
Maurice has a 3.9 GPA and is deciding among Akron, Bowling
Green, Toledo, or Tiffin for college. He is the son of Donald Chatman and was coached in football by Gregg Miller.
Tristan Bender
Loudonville High School
Tristan Bender represents the Mid-Buckeye Conference and
Loudonville High School. As a senior, he was named Defensive
Player of the Year and set the school record for tackles in a season
with 168. He was also named 1st Team All-Conference and was
the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year and 1st Team AllOhio.
He is also a member of the wrestling and track teams. Outside
of sports he is class president and a member of the yearbook club.
The National Honor Society member carries a 3.987 GPA and
is undecided on his choice of college. He is the son of Tom and
Tracey Bender and was coached in football by Justin Todd.
Nathan Clevenger
Fairbanks High School
Nathan Clevenger from Fairbanks High School represents the
MOAC-Red. He was named All-State honorable mention and was
team captain as a senior. He received academic awards all four
years.
Nathan also plays baseball and basketball. He is president of
both the National Honor Society and Student Council. He is also
a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In 2014, he was
crowned Homecoming King.
He has a 3.6 GPA and will attend Ohio University. Nathan is
the son of Todd and Clara Clevenger and was coached in football
by Dave Gebhart.

Brendan Mapes
Centerburg High School
Brendan Mapes represents the MOAC-Blue. He was team
captain for the Centerburg football team and was named 1st Team
All-League, All-District, and All-Region.
He also plays baseball and basketball. Brendan is a member
of the speech and debate club, quiz bowl, the robotics team and
is president of the student council. He is also a member of the
National Honor Society.
Brendan, who has a 4.2 GPA, is considering Case Western or
Oberlin, where he plans to study Mechanical Engineering. He is
the son of Bruce and Penny Mapes and was coached in football by
Jim Stoyle.
Jack Billman
St. Charles Preparatory School
Jack Billman represents St. Charles and the CCL-Silver. He was
team captain as a senior and named Academic All-Ohio. He was
special mention All-District as a senior.
Jack also plays basketball. He’s a member of the National
Honor Society and is a Eucharistic Minister. He has been on the
honor roll every quarter of high school. Jack has volunteered for
many events in the central Ohio community.
He holds a 3.68 GPA and is deciding between South Carolina,
Miami (OH), Clemson, or Indiana for college. He is the son of
Michael and Kathryn Billman and was coached in football by Jeff
Pharion.
Mitchell Willis
Newark Catholic
Newark Catholic’s Mitchell Willis represents the Licking
County League (Small Division). As a senior he was team captain,
as well as 1st Team All-League and 1st Team All-District.
In addition to football, Mitchell plays basketball and baseball.
He’s the senior class president and a member of key club. He was
also the 2014 Homecoming King.
Mitchell holds a 3.84 GPA and is deciding between Case
Western, Dayton, or Brown. He is the son of Todd and Renee Willis
and was coached in football by Bill Franks.

Connor Slade
Olentangy High School
Connor Slade represents the OCC-Capital and Olentangy High
School. The 2-year football letterman was the OCC’s Co-Player
of the Year, District Defensive Player of the Year, and 1st Team AllOhio.
He is also a member of the wrestling team where he’s a 4-year
letter winner and district qualifier. Connor is a member of the
National Honor Society and the service club. He also volunteers
with local youth sports.
Connor has a 3.6 GPA and plans to study aeronautical engineering at a college to be determined. He is the son of Rick and
Shannon Slade and was coached in football by Mark Solis.
William Merrill
Logan Elm High School
Logan Elm’s William Merrill represents the MSL-Buckeye. He
was named 2nd Team All-County and received team awards for
sportsmanship, honor, and integrity
William is also a member of the track team, National Honor
Society, key club, and FFA. He’s an honor roll student with a 4.15
GPA.
He is undecided on his choice of college. William is the son
of Frank and Lisa Merrill and was coached in football by Scott
Bartholomew.
Markus Bailey
Hilliard Davidson High School
Markus Bailey from Hilliard Davidson represents the OCCCentral. He was team MVP and 1st Team All-OCC as a senior, as
well as 1st Team All-District.
He has also been a member of the basketball and track teams.
He volunteers with the touchdown club and the booster club. Academically, he has a 4.15 GPA and has received the Academic Achievement Award and the Academic Honors Award all
through high school. He’s also a 12-time member of the Principal’s
Roll.
Markus will attend Purdue University. He’s the son of Amy
Bailey and was coached in football by Brian White.

Connor Dickerson
West Jefferson High School
Connor Dickerson represents West Jefferson High School and
the MSL-Ohio. As a senior he was team captain and the school’s
nominee for Wendy’s High School Heisman. He was named 2nd
Team All MSL-Ohio, 1st Team Central District, and Special Mention All-State.
He’s also a member of the baseball and basketball teams. Outside
of sports, he is a member of the National Honor Society, student
council and the chess club. He also enjoys art.
Connor holds a 4.0 GPA and will attend the Russ College of
Engineering at Ohio University. He is the son of Richard and Joan
Dickerson and was coached in football by Shawn Buescher.
Hunter Pharis
Harvest Preparatory School
Harvest Prep’s Hunter Pharis is the representative for the MSLCardinal. He was named top defensive player by his team and was
1st Team All-League, 1st Team All-District, 1st Team All-State, and
the 2014 AP Central District Defensive Player of the Year. He was
also selected to play in the 2015 North South Ohio All-Star Game.
Hunter also plays baseball. He’s president of the student body government and a member of the National Honor Society.
He’s ranked number one in his class with a 4.3 GPA. He is
deciding between Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania
for college. Hunter is the son of Brian and Lori Pharis and was
coached in football by Milan Smith.

David Weimar
Pickerington High School Central
David Weimar represents Pickerington High School Central
and the OCC-Ohio. He was team captain as a senior and was
also named 1st Team All-OCC Ohio and Honorable Mention AP
All-Central District.
He is also a member of the baseball team. He is treasurer of
the National Honor Society, key club, and a member of the advisory committees for both the principal and the superintendent.
He has been on the distinguished honor roll each year of high
school.
David has a 4.483 GPA and is deciding between Duke, Harvard,
Penn, Princeton, Yale, Vanderbilt, and OSU. He is the son of
Glenn and Tina Weimar and was coached in football by Jay Sharrett.
Austin Finley
Granville High School
Austin Finley represents Granville High School and the Licking
County League (Large Division). He was team captain as a senior
and received the team’s Sledgehammer Award. He was also named
2nd Team All-Licking County League.
Austin is a member of the drama club and has participated in
plays and musicals. He’s a member of the symphonic select choir
and an acapella group called Blue Notes.
He holds a 3.862 GPA and is undecided on his choice of college. He is the son of Kevin and Bobbi Jo Finley and was coached
in football by JR Wait.

College Scholar-Athletes
Brandon Sklenar
Denison University
Representing Denison University is Brandon Sklenar. He led Denison
as the starting quarterback and team captain to the first back-to-back
winning seasons in almost three decades. He was named All-Conference
(NCAC) and established single season record in total offense.
Brandon maintains a 3.4 GPA and graduates with a B.A. in Economics and minors in Spanish and Communication. He serves as a Resident
Assistant mentor for 2nd and 3rd year students and is pursuing a career
in investment banking.
He is the son of Steve and Jill Sklenar, originally from Midland, MI,
and was coached in football by Jack Hatem.
Ryan Thombs
Otterbein University
Ryan was named Academic All-Ohio Conference in 2012,
2013 and 2014. He is a member of the President’s Committee, a
student senator and an instruction leader for Micro Economics. He
also was recognized by the Otterbein Distinction Program, Torch &
Key Honorary Society, Political Science Award and Department of
Business, Accounting and Economics Academic Scholarship.
He maintains a 3.91 GPA with Majors in Economics and
Political Science. Ryan plans to pursue a master’s degree in Urban
Studies, as well as a Ph.D.
Ryan is the son of Dennis Thombs and Colleen Mahoney and
was coached in football by Tim Doup.

Nolan Gill
Capital University
Nolan was a three-time Academic All-OAC and was a team
captain. He carries a 3.53 GPA majoring in Criminology. He
played high school football at Hilliard Davidson.
He is a volunteer at First English Lutheran Church, Teaching
Opportunity Unity by Connecting Hearts (TOUCH) and Relay for
Life. He plans on a career as a police officer and eventually wants
to work with the FBI.
His parents are Tom and Sally Gill and he was coached by
Craig Candeto.
Mark Miller
Ohio Dominican University
Mark was a three-year starter and two-time captain at quarterback. He had a 29-6 career record and led ODU to two division
titles and the 2013 GLIAC Championship. He was a three-time
All-GLIAC selection and threw for more than 8,000 yards and 75
touchdowns. Mark participated in the D2 vs. NAIA Senior Bowl.
Mark carries a 3.72 GPA, is a National Football Foundation
Campbell Trophy semifinalist and member of the ODU President’s
Society. He is a student representative for the Board of Trustees,
participates in the Second and Seven Foundation and has performed over 100 hours of community service. He is majoring in
Middle Childhood Education.
He is the son of George and Jan Miller and was coached by
Bill Conley.
Jack McDonald
Kenyon College
Jack was a leading tackler for Kenyon in 2014 and was a team
leader in QB sacks. He is a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity
and plans to go to medical school after taking a “gap year”.
Originally from Maine, Jack carries a 3.44 GPA.
Jack is the son of Paul McDonald and Arietta Scott and was
coached by Chris Monfiletto.

Darryl Baldwin
Ohio State University
Darryl is a starter on the offensive line for Ohio State. He
graduated in May 2014 and is in graduate school pursuing a
Masters in Sports Management. He is a four-time Varsity “O” letter winner, a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and was named three
times to the Academic All-Big 10 Team.
He is the son of Caron Baldwin and the late Darryl Baldwin, Sr.
and was coached by Urban Meyer.
Calvin Cagney
Ohio Wesleyan University
Calvin was named first team All-NCAC as a tight end for the
Battling Bishops in 2014. He completes a career at OWU that
included similar honors as a junior and sophomore. Calvin was
named to the Dean’s list multiple times and carries a 3.66 GPA
He is active in the OWU Bishop Games for athletes with special
needs, Read-A-Thon at Shultz Elementary school and worked
summer jobs doing landscaping. He plans to obtain a Doctor of
Physical Therapy degree and help patients and athletes to regain
pain-free life styles.
He is the son of Martin and Beth Cagney and was coached by
Tom Watts.

2015 Ohio Gold Award
Recipient: Troy Smith
Troy Smith was 25-3 as a
starting quarterback, led Ohio
State to Big Ten championships
in 2005 and 2006. In 2005 he
threw for 2,282 yards with 16
touchdowns and only four interceptions, and in 2006 he threw
for 2,542 yards with a school-record 30 touchdowns against just
six interceptions.
Smith won the 2006 Heisman Trophy in a landslide – his
victory total was the second-largest margin of victory – and he
was a consensus All-American as
a senior after leading Ohio State
to a 12-0 regular season and to
a national title game appearance. He closed an exceptional career at Ohio State with 5,720 passing yards
while completing 62.7 percent of his passes (second-best at Ohio State) with 54
touchdowns (third behind Bobby Hoying and Joe Germaine). His career passing
efficiency mark of 157.1 is a school record.
Smith was drafted in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Baltimore
Ravens. He played three seasons with the Ravens and one with the San Francisco
49ers. He recently completed his second season playing for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.
Troy Smith’s name and his jersey number “10” will forever be displayed in
Ohio Stadium as the Ohio State Department of Athletics honored Smith, the 2006
Heisman Trophy winner, and enshrined his jersey number in Ohio Stadium during
halftime ceremonies of the Nov. 29 game against Michigan, a 42-28 victory.
Smith, a 2006 Ohio State graduate with a degree in communications, is the
eighth former Buckeye to be so honored in Ohio Stadium after the five previous
Heisman Trophy winners – Les Horvath, Vic Janowicz, Howard “Hopalong” Cassady, Archie Griffin and Eddie George – and Chic Harley.
He started three games against Michigan and won all three to become only
the second Ohio State quarterback to accomplish the feat. In each game he
topped 300 yards of total offense and he accounted for nine touchdowns and 857
yards passing in the three victories.

2015 Larry Larson High School Coaches Award
Recipient - Bob Jacoby
Bob Jacoby spent 25 years as a head
football coach at the high school level.
He was the head coach for 19 seasons at
St. Francis DeSales High School, 3 seasons at Hamilton Township High School
and 3 seasons at Hamilton High School
near Cincinnati.
During his 25 years as a head coach,
Bob was fortunate enough to coach 16
different teams that qualified for the
OHSAA Playoffs. His teams achieved an
overall playoff record of 34 wins and 14
losses. Six times his teams advanced to
the state championship game. Twice, in
1997 and again in 1998 St. Francis DeSales won the OHSAA Division III State
Championship and four times finished as OHSAA Runner-ups (1990, 1996,
2001, 2005). Bob has been a 2 time recipient of the Shamrock Club of Columbus, Woody Hayes Award and 2 time recipient of The OHSFCA Coach of the
Year Award in Division III while at St. Francis DeSales and in Division I while at
Hamilton.
Bob has been married to his wife Kathy for 36 years. Kathy has been a
Respiratory Therapist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital for 39 years. Bob and
Kathy’s son Nic, his wife Laura and their 2 year old daughter Camilla reside
in University City, Missouri while Nic pursues a pre-medical education at
Washington University of St. Louis and Laura finishes her education degree in
special education this spring with Ashland University. Bob and Kathy’s daughter
Kelli, her husband Kyle Fitzpatrick and their 8 month old son, Declan, reside in
Westerville. Kyle is an Internal Sales Manager for Nationwide Insurance. Kelli is
a Nurse at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

The 2015 Tyson Gentry Courage Award
Established in 2009 and presented
annually to a player, coach, staff member
or fan whose actions best demonstrate
the qualities of courageous leadership
shown by Tyson Gentry. His courage and
perseverance have had lasting impacts
on the many lives.
Tyson Gentry had his playing career
cut short in spring, 2006, when he suffered
Tyson Gentry
a fracture to his vertebrae. He was the
recipient of the Bo Rein Award in 2008 for the most inspirational
player on the 2008 Ohio State Football team. He continues to
work towards getting out of his wheelchair but is determined to use
his disability to help others until then. He attributes his positive
attitude to his faith, family and friends. Tyson’s wife, Megan, also
plays a major role in supporting him.
Tyson earned his Master’s in rehabilitation counseling from the
University of Buffalo in 2014. Currently, he and Megan operate a
nonprofit organization called New Perspective Foundation, which
seeks to provide travel accommodations for the family and friends
of individuals affected with spinal cord injuries.”

Where Are They Now?
Annually the Columbus
Chapter tries to recognize one of the
past scholar-athletes from the area
that has taken the lessons learned in
football and in the classroom and
has succeeded in many aspects of
their life.
Brandon Schnittker is one of
the true scholar-athletes in Ohio
State history. He was a no nonsense
bruising Fullback leading the way
for one of the most dangerous running and passing games in football. He earned a National Championship ring as a member of the 2002 team.
Jim Tressel loved the way this guy played, but even more so
loved his leadership and his scholar-athlete mentality. He graduated
from Ohio State and the Fisher College of Business with a degree in
Marketing and then followed that up with a Master of Business Administration in Marketing/Finance/Leadership Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
He began his career with Stryker in medical device sales in 2006
and is now a Regional Sales Manager based in Chicago for Stryker.

John Wooldridge - President
John Wooldridge was born and raised in
Akron, Ohio, where he was a student athlete at Central-Hower High School. There he
participated in basketball, track and was an
All-American running back in football. He is
a member of the Central-Hower High School
Hall of Fame and the Summit County Sports
Hall of Fame.
He was awarded a football scholarship to
The Ohio State University where he received
a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and
played tailback for the Buckeyes. From 1982
– 1986 he helped OSU to a 3-1 Bowl record
and two Big 10 Championships. In 1985 he
was Ohio State’s leading rusher and 2nd leading scorer. He signed with the Dallas Cowboys in 1987 and a series of knee injuries ended his football career
in 1990.
Wooldridge began a career in criminal justice with the Attorney
General’s Office where he served as a special agent on a state and federal
joint task force against organized crime. Following 14 years in criminal
justice field he changed his focus to real estate and community development, where he spent 10 years as the VP of business development for KBK
Enterprises.
Today, John is President and CEO of Excenture Business Solutions, a
business development consulting and product procurement services firm.
This past October, Excenture Business Solutions was ranked by Columbus
Business First as the 8th fastest growing privately held company in Central
Ohio.
In addition to his service as President of the Columbus Chapter, he
serves as a board member for the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame, the
Ohio After School All-Stars and the National Monuments Commission in
Washington D.C.
He is married to Kimberly and has two children, Nakita and John II.

National Scholar-Athlete Award Recipients
Each year the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame
awards a scholarship to the top 15 seniors in college football. The scholarship, which is an $18,000 grant for graduate work, is based upon combined
excellence in athletics and academics.

Each year the Columbus Chapter honors an individual with its highest award
for his/her contributions to amateur football. The recipient must have been closely
associated with college football as a player, coach or as a business, political, or
educational leader. Other criteria such as success in an industrial business, financial,
educational, professional or related career are considered.
