Our presence here tonight is a testimony of our respect and appreciation for Mrs. Eva Maus Kelleher who for 45 years has been teaching German in the German Language School at Zion Church as well as with other organizations. She started as a teacher in 1966 and became the principal of the Language School in 1985. During my years as pastor of Zion Church I came to know ‘Frau Kelleher’ as a gifted teacher, a capable administrator and a disciplined leader. Her celebrations with the school or the Women’s Auxiliary of the German Society-the result of careful and loving planning and preparations-were a joy to attend. The promotion of the German language is an important part of our effort to preserve the German American heritage. Tonight we honor Eva Kelleher’s efforts and celebrate her achievements. Thank you, Eva! Sincerely, H. J. Eva was born in Dortmund, Germany. During the first four and a half years of her life she lived in Dortmund with her parents and her brother. Her father was an engineer with a fine education. When he received an offer of a position with an Austrian firm, he accepted it and the family moved to Kienberg-Gaming in Lower Austria. Eva entered elementary school at the age of five. She progressed very quickly in learning the basic skills of reading, writing and math. Because she was a fast learner, she was allowed to advance at her own pace and she had finished the curriculum for the seventh grade by the age of ten. This early start instilled in Eva a life-long respect for early childhood education and a keen desire to transmit her own love of learning to children. After the end of World War II the area of Austria where Eva and her family lived was occupied by Russian forces. They lived under this occupation for quite a while. Then the family left Kienberg-Gaming under stressful circumstances and went to Gelnhausen in the American zone of West Germany. Eva attended the Oberschule/Gymnasium Gelnhausen, after which she completed three years of schooling and internship training as a physical therapist and worked closely with doctors and nurses in a local medical clinic. She was employed in this field when she met Bill Kelleher, who was an infantry squad leader in the U.S. Army stationed at Gelnhausen. Bill and Eva were immediately attracted to each other and they were married in April, 1957. When Bill was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1958, he returned to his home city of Boston and settled down near his parents and sisters. Eva and their little daughter joined him as soon as they could do so. Their family grew to include four daughters. In 1962 Bill completed his B. A. degree in Economics at Boston College. Economic Laboratory offered him the Baltimore / Washington, D.C. sales area in 1963. So the Kellehers moved to Baltimore and began to reach out to the vibrant German-American community of this geographic area. In September, 1966, Eva found her special calling in life when she was offered a position teaching German to the elementary school children at the German Language School located at Zion Church in Baltimore. Eva was delighted to accept this position. She had the ability to relate well to the children and enrich her instruction with a variety of strategies that captured their attention and built up their enthusiasm. The children loved to be with her and attended her German classes eagerly. She set high expectations for her young students and they reciprocated by rising to the challenge, learning German well, and eagerly participating in the activities that she planned. When Elizabeth Roberts decided to retire as the principal of the German Language School in 1985, she recommended Eva Kelleher to be her successor in this position. Eva willingly agreed to accept this multifaceted and demanding position while continuing to teach German in the school. She also took several additional college courses to prepare herself better for her new responsibilities. For the past twenty-six years she has administered the German Language School energetically and developed the instructional program to serve the needs of many different people in the community. In recent years the enrollment of this Saturday school has reached and at times 6 The German Society of Maryland-228th Awards Banquet 2011 exceeded 100 students. Approximately half of these students are adults. In addition to her ongoing responsibilities at the German Language School, Eva is a member of the German Society of Maryland Board of Directors. This position stems from her election as president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the German Society, a leadership position that carries with it ex officio membership on the German Society’s Board. The Auxiliary is supportive of the German Language School and honors high-achieving students there who score at the 85th and the 90th percentile on the AATG German Language Test (Levels 1, 2 and 3). In the past she has served on the Church Council of Zion Church. Her teaching career has also included ten years of teaching with the Berlitz School when it was located in the H & O Building on Charles Street in Baltimore and an ongoing German language course at the Kickers Club of Baltimore. Eva also teaches elementary, intermediate and advanced adult education courses at the Community College of Baltimore County. For all her outstanding achievements in promoting the German language and German culture, the German Society of Maryland is pleased to honor Eva Maus Kelleher with our 2011 Distinguished Service Award. 7 The German Society of Maryland-228th Awards Banquet 2011 8 The German Society of Maryland-228th Awards Banquet 2011 The German Language School at Zion Church The history of the school is as old as the church itself, which was founded in 1755. The school’s origin was as a parochial institution which offered the basic courses of reading, writing, arithmetic and religion. The church substituted as a school house until years later when a small school house was built. The school’s curriculum remained the same for 80 years until Pastor Heinrich (Henry) Scheib’s arrival in 1835. Many changes were instituted by Pastor Scheib, who was educated in Germany. Included in these changes were: the change in status from a parochial school to a primary and secondary school and the change of the official language in which courses were conducted from German to German and English. Despite much criticism, enrollment increased dramatically over the next 35 years from 71 to 802 students. Anglo-American, Jewish, and Catholic students soon outnumbered the church members’ students. After a fire destroyed the school in 1839, the new Scheib School was built. Along with the new building a new philosophy was introduced, which included modern day high school subjects, a library, and study facilities. On January 3, 1839 the first ever Parent-Teacher Association in the United States was founded by Pastor Scheib. Thousands of Baltimoreans, who later were to achieve prominence in the city and state sector, were schooled here. The introduction of English-German public schools in Baltimore, though, attracted many Scheib School students, and after a long struggle with declining enrollment the school was forced to close its doors in 1895. The school building was demolished in the 1930’s, and the wall which divides the church from the parking lot is all that is left of the historic Scheib School. From a school brochure in 1935 The German Language School, as it is known today, was founded in 1929 as a continuation of the Zion Church scholastic tradition. A group of concerned parents, members of Zion Church and members of the German-American community came together to start the “Deutsche Schule”, Zion’s German language school. This had become necessary as the First World War and its aftermath had all but eliminated public school teaching of German and also the use of German as a family language had been discontinued in many cases. All other churches in the area that had been using German stopped doing so after 1917. Zion’s Saturday school was started to fill the gap. From its start the Sprachschule was conducted by Zion as non-sectarian and open to all. The school received a favorable response in the early years and enrollment in the thirties reached 250 students. The first principal, Miss Elsa Conradi, achieved world recognition with her delightful textbook, which was not only used in the German Language School at Zion, but also in German schools in many other countries. As the school’s logo says, it emphasizes teaching German ‘’in Lied und Laut und Lehr’’, meaning that German nursery rhymes and songs always have been part of the curriculum. For many years, all children would come together at 11:30 for thirty minutes of song practice (shown here in 1952). 9 The German Society of Maryland-228th Awards Banquet 2011 In 1962 the school started a Literature class for adults, often with many as 15 students. This was the first adult class and was taught solely by Otto Kappus for many years. By 1966 more and more adults, parents who brought their children to school, wanted to attend German classes to fill the two hour waiting time while their children attended classes. Most of the parents were either not ready for or did not want to take a literature class. At this time the first formal adult classes were formed. As more adults became interested in learning German, more classes were offered – a total of four classes, plus the original literature class. In the 1970’s there was a drop in the enrollment for children’s classes. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, with increased immigration from Germany and an increasing number of bi-national families, however, the enrollment for children increased once again. But to this day the number of adult students still outnumbers the children. In 1995 German for Travelers was added, followed by Conversation I and II. These classes are offered during the summer each year. In recent years, a class for three year old children from German/bilingual families was added. In the 2009 anniversary school year, there were 96 students (36 children, 60 adults). In the 2011/12 school year, we have more than 100 students. Throughout the years, there has never been a lack of enthusiastic, educated and competent teachers, and many have stayed on for decades. Their unassuming dedication has made it possible to keep tuition fees low. The school has received annual gifts from many of the German American clubs and recently has received a donation from a foundation connected to the national German Schools Conference of which we are a member. In its 82 years the school has had only three principals: • Frau Conradi (Miss Elsa Conradi 1929-1951) • Frau Roberts (Mrs. Elisabeth Roberts 1951-1984) • Frau Kelleher (Eva Maus Kelleher since 1984) Frau Kelleher started as a teacher in 1966 and has been with the Sprachschule for 45 years now. As Pastor and Church Council of Zion Church, we are very grateful that Frau Kelleher is being honored tonight. She has been a true leader, keeping the Sprachschule going and making sure everyone gets good instruction. She has had to improvise many times and done so admirably. Students like the dedicated, no-frills, but warm atmosphere. The Deutsche Schule has proven to be a vital part of Zion’s parish life and mission and will be so for many years to come. For centuries we have come to this New World we call: “The Land of Gold,” this Land of Endless Opportunities We are no different now from those who did arrive hundreds of years ago-those first to look for better lives, fleeing from hunger, wars, and persecution. This world is full of never ending sorrow. There is no end to suffering, bondage, and suppression, but here we come in hope and desperation, the immigrants from everywhere. We immigrants-we keep on coming from all corners of the world, from Europe, Asia, Africa, all continents, searching for freedom, looking for our own land. “Bring me the unfortunate, the willing,” America says, America, the rich, the open hearted. And we have come bringing our skills, tilling the savage soil to grow, wheat, rye, corn, beets, cabbage, and potatoes, we helped form this land in science, business, and the arts. So, sing your song, all you German-American immigrants here in America, sing of your ambitions, your dreams, and desires. sing of freedom, equality, and liberty forever. 30 The German Society of Maryland-228th Awards Banquet 2011 National Anthems Bundesrepublik Deutschland Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit für das deutsche Vaterland! Whose bright stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night That our flag was still there. Oh, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave o’er the land of the free And the home of the brave? *Note: “The Anthem of a foreign country is usually given first, followed by ‘The Star Spangled Banner’. It would be correct for the audience to stand during the singing of both anthems.” From letter Ref.
