North East River Yacht Club Member Newsletter At The ‘Peake’ of the Chesapeake Social, Power or Sail, We Have Something For Everyone April 2008 Commodore’s Report Well Spring is finally here! By now I am sure that we have all burned our socks and are ready to commission our vessels for the upcoming boating season. The bridge officers are saddened that the ball season is over but are looking forward to spending their weekends from late April through June attending Opening Day ceremonies around the bay! VC Jon Fowler and Lady Lynn have assembled their committees to prepare for our Opening Weekend May 2-4th and both our Dock Master Nigel Veater and Building & Grounds chair John Beardsley have been scheduling work parties to ready our grounds and waterfront for members and visitors alike. VC Jon has appointed a picnic area development committee which is headed by past first Lady Susan Andrews and Susan Woron has been contacting interested members to “adopt a garden” and she and her volunteers have met with Master gardener Ebette, long time companion of Jurgen Braun to design an overall plan for the gardens around the clubhouse. FC Joe Reynolds and his assistants Steve Hogan and Russ Zehnaker have been making preparations for the cruising calendar and have been alerting members to act quickly to secure their slips for the holiday weekends early. FC Joe is also working with Doug Cain planning our first Fleet Pass & Review/Parade/dock Party in mid May and with our Dock Master Nigel, in finalizing the Officer of the Day schedule. RC Roger Hughes along with his Lady Linda and her assistants Ginny Somers and Regina Leigh are working with our Chef John in preparing the menu for Oyster Roast, and with the members to secure donations for the Silent Auction to be held at the end of the month…this year the theme is “Destinations” and many of our members have already donated weekends and weeks at their vacation homes to support both the Commodores Ball and Capital Improvement funds. Now, if you feel that there still is not enough activity to fill www.neryc.com your weekends over the next 2 months, Justine and Ron Roecker are directing the infamous NERYC Thespians in our 3rd annual Murder Mystery Dinner on April 12. Our cast is hard at work memorizing their lines and making their costumes to regal you once again with their stellar performances…if you missed these shows the last 2 years, do be sure to get your reservations in early as this event has been a sell out both years. RC Roger, R&B chair Steve Dougherty and the Activity Chairs Robert and Regina Leigh are continuing with themed Birthday/Anniversary nights, Happy Hour Fridays and Half Price Burger Sundays and the entertainment provided by DJ Bob Cross and the NERYC singers continues to be a hit among members and guests alike! Susan Andrews will soon begin training her team of crackerjack dealers, sticks, bankers and the like for Casino Night which will be held in June this year with proceeds going to the picnic area redevelopment fund. In case you thought that I had forgotten, “the BT’s”, (sail/ race co-chairs Bruce and Barbie Taylor) along with their racing committees have been hard at work during the off season preparing for another magnificent racing season. The pre-season sailing seminar is scheduled for April 5th and is nearly sold out. The first race of the season is slated for Opening Day, May 3rd. PC Bill Roos is hosting a pursuit sail race, which has been combined with the Charlestown Colonial Cup in September. The event will benefit the American Cancer Society’s 4th Annual Relay on the Bay, and form part of the fundraising effort of the NERYC ‘Cruisers for a Cure’ team. The Relay for Life is held at the North East Community Waterfront Park and is co-chaired again this year by NERYC member Babs Waters. I think this about covers the spring season, and the summer months also promise several more exciting events on the horizon at NERYC. So stay tuned, come out and play, and tell all of your friends and family about the best club on the Bay! Commodore Lisa Mack FROM THE VICE Greetings all. Picnic area and Club grounds will be undergoing a springtime spruce up and improvement. Susan Andrews and Susan Woron are coordinating design, logistics and plantings, so if you have any flowers, shrubs or trees to donate, please call them. Spring Volunteer Workday April 12th, 2008. Come one, come all. Our annual right of Spring has arrived and we are looking for volunteers to come out to help spruce up your clubhouse and grounds. Bring shovels, rakes, power washers, paint brushes, cleaning buckets etc. We have downed branches, lawns to rake, topsoil coming in to the picnic grounds which will be leveled and seeded as well as interior cleaning. For those members who are leasing slips in our NERYC marina and require services of a contractor/ subcontractor on their boat, please note: • Every contractor or subcontractor who has to enter our property to do work on our boats in our marina is required to have on file, in the NERYC office, an insurance liability certificate that is up to date. It costs literally nothing to photocopy their current policy and submit it to the office. Our NERYC insurance policy mandates it. Otherwise we may be forced to be in a position having a deductible to pay before our insurance company pays off. It doesn’t matter how good a sub contractor they may be, for in the event of triggering an insurance claim, our current policy is to kick in secondary to the subcontractors. It’s simple, No insurance? No work! Anyone in the business should know about this. Boating education was a success. The two day, 8 hour, ABC boating course March 15-16 and the 2 hour “Onboard Weather Forecasting” seminar, given by US Power Squadron was well attended. About 16 people showed up for the course and seminar. Special thanks to the Power Squadron for providing education to the boating public. NERYC flyers were distributed to all non-member attendees. The pool table with two broken legs will repaired soon for minimal cost. When repaired, our Club will be able to once again offer pool and shuffleboard as activities upstairs in the dance floor area. This will benefit the club as added activities for the transients and most importantly, the children of club members. Dance Class invite Northeast River Power Squadron is holding a one day ballroom dancing class starting at approximately 2:15 p.m. on April 20, 2008 at the club. Invite has been extended to NERYC membership to participate. CBYCA Delegates meeting will be held at NERYC on April 19th. Board meeting will be in the morning and delegates meeting in the afternoon. The meeting here is fortuitous, as it will help showcase our new docks to Yacht Club representatives from around the Bay. Get ready for Opening Day on May 3rd. V/C Jon Fowler FROM THE REAR April at NERYC is not only exciting because the upcoming season is so near, but also because we have the Oyster Roast and Silent Auction. This year we are promoting “Destinations” on the April 19th. We have several weeklong destination donations that can be had at bargain basement prices. This year members have donated a week at two Ocean Front condos, two mountain retreats and one week at a Bed & Breakfast on fabulous Luquillo Beach in Porto Rico. We also have artwork and other outstanding donations that should excite us all. Please join us and try and bring both your friends and non-member friends. The menu prepared by the food and beverage team will include: All for $35.00 Raw Oyster Shuckers Oyster Rockefeller Oyster Stew Fried Oysters Not an Oyster Fan, try this for $25.00 Fried Chicken Baked Ham Top Round Beef Potato Salad Pasta Salad Don’t miss out. It’s always a lot of fun competing for our special purchases. The first $3,500 will subsidize the Commodores Ball and the remainder will be placed in the Capital Improvements account for building improvements for the benefit of the membership. Please make sure you call the club for reservations, as Steve needs to have an accurate head count of the guests and members attending the event. We can still need your donations, so please contact Linda at ([email protected]). We are hoping for good creative items that will bring high bids. Keep in mind that this event will be a much more exciting way to spend money than paying an assessment! If you have not responded to Linda, Ginny, or Regina, please do as soon as possible. See you at the club. R/C Roger Hughes 2 Come Celebrate Opening Day Weekend Festivities At NERYC! SHARLENE WILKINS [email protected] 4 FROM THE FLEET It’s time to spring into action and join us for the Shakedown Cruise. NERYC INTERNATIONAL CRUISE CHESAPEAKE INN MARINA CHESAPEAKE CITY, MD APRIL 25-27, 2008 We are looking forward to our first 2008 club cruise and are adding some international flavor. This will be your chance to represent your favorite country and wow us with a traditional appetizer to share at the hospitality/happy hours from 5 pm – 7 pm. The Fleet Captain’s locker will be open with beer and wine and Lady Laura will be serving a specialty drink for all to enjoy. Launch your boat early, get your money’s worth out of your slip and sign up for the cruise. For those who will not have their boat ready in time, please consider driving around to join in the fun. Thanks to Assistant Fleet Captain Steve Hogan, Russ and Gloria Zehnacker, Skip Best, and Lady Laura for their help and assistance organizing 2008 cruise schedule. The Officer of the Day (OOD) sign up is available on the bulletin board at the club or email F/C with several dates and one will be assigned. See you on the water. Joe Reynolds - Fleet Captain FROM THE DOCKS By the time you are reading this the 2008 boating season will be officially under way with the dock open to “summer residents”. Moorings will be put in during April and will be ready for mooring holders before the end of the month. Just a reminder that all club fees must be paid and up to date before you take possession of your slip. Utilities are on and we will again be doing two billings for electric on in July and one at the end of the season. Initial meter readings will be taken March 30th. The water to the docks is on but about 21 slips suffered ice damage to the faucet area. We expect to have all these repaired by April 7th. If you have been down to the club recently, you will see the fine craftsmanship of our volunteers who built two additional dingy racks last month. The new rack closest the water is for our junior sailing fleet boats while two spaces on the gray rack and the other rack are available for rent of $80 for the season. All dinghies and other small craft must either be kept in your slip or stored on the rack. If you would like space on the rack please email me at [email protected] and I will reserve a spot for you. As a reminder mooring holders get one free dingy space as part of their mooring agreement. As April starts we still have about 9 slips available, I hope you will continue to urge your boating friends and neighbors to join NERYC and get a slip before they are all gone. See you on the docks! Nigel Veater - Dock Master Chesapeake City's historic area is located on the C&D Canal. The town has many restored historic homes, shops and galleries, featuring hand-painted originals and prints, antiques, collectibles, clothing, gifts and crafts. Additional sights include the Canal Museum and art galleries. There are also many fine restaurants and bed and breakfasts. The Chesapeake Inn is scenically situated with a view overlooking the canal and the bridge. The Inn has a marina, restaurant and dockside bar. www.chesapeakeinn.com 5 NORTH EAST RIVER YACHT CLUB Presents Murdered By The Mob WHEN THE BOYS GET TOGETHER, IT’S MURDER! The entertainment committees are traveling far and wide looking for talent. By the time you read this we will be returning from the BVI hopefully tanned and totally refreshed ideas to maintain the momentum and keep the entertainment hopping for upcoming events at the NERYC. We would like to extend a heart felt thank you to Joyce Hare for donating the attractive Irish theme basket in March. With great excitement we are looking forward to the next birthday basket, which will be donated by Susan Woron. Music on April 11, our Birthday and Anniversary night will be provided by the talent of Larry Buck from 7-11 PM. Be sure not to miss the Murder Mystery Dinner on April 12th. This is always a laugh a minute and some of the best entertainment you’ll find. The next big event is our Silent Auction/Oyster Feast on April 19th. Our theme is “Destinations” so most favorable items would be vacation spots, condo use, sunset boat trips, but any items would be appreciated as this is to benefit our Commodores Ball and the General fund. For donations the contacts are Linda Hughes, Ginny Somers and Regina Leigh. Destinations will be published prior to the auction date so you can plan with friends to team bid. We are currently in negotiations for a band to entertain at the Commodores Ball. We believe that they will be well received and everyone will want to dance all night. The 2008 By-Laws Committee had their first meeting on Saturday March 8 at NERYC. Besides me, the committee members include Commodore Lisa Mack, Secretary Ginny Sommers, Parliamentarian Russ Zehnacker, and P/C Jack Kauffman. Our current By-laws document consists of 29 pages. Prior to the meeting P/C Jack Kauffman suggested that the By-laws were too long and that we should consider cutting out the Bridge Officers & Board Members responsibilities and put them into another document that would also be reviewed annually. The only difference in doing this would be that the membership would only vote on the Bylaw changes and not any changes concerning the Board position responsibilities. If we did cut out the Board responsibilities sections, our Bylaws would be around 13 to 14 pages long. The entire committee agreed with Jack so we are moving forward in this direction. We plan to have both documents available for the membership to review by August; however, if any member feels strongly that we should not divide the By-laws in this manner I would like them to contact me. We would rather find out now if a large number of people do object before we start to make our changes. We are also trying to get copies of other full service yacht clubs to see how they format their By-laws. Unless we hear from the membership we will continue to move forward. Our next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 5. Please call me at (302) 631-7719 with your comments. Until next time we wish everyone fair winds, calm seas and a mermaid to guide you. FROM OUR PRINCESS April is a time when we truly start to miss those lazy summer days. We miss our boats, we miss the water, the racing, and the cruises. Sometimes, we miss the simplest things, such as a warm ray of sunshine on our face, or coming back into port when you only have the faintest light of the setting sun with which to see and, of course, your boat lights to guide your return. It’s not at all surprising that we miss those precious summer days. Although we have our yacht club family to warm our hearts all year round, thank goodness, boats are beginning to re-launch and return to the club. I look forward to our Opening Day, which is right around the corner now, and the start of a new racing and cruising season at NERYC. See you all soon.
