Head Coach John Ceralde
4th Season • Louisville ‘86
Since taking the reins of the Penn gymnastics program in 2006, Head Coach John
Ceralde has seen his team earn an Ivy Classic title (2007), four individual NCAA
appearances — including back-to-back appearances by senior standout Marissa
Rosen — and two ECAC individual champions.
In his first season at the
helm of the Quakers,
Ceralde quickly made
his mark. The Red and
Blue won two dual meets
and finished first in three
multi-meets, including
a win in the Ivy Classic,
Penn’s first since 2004.
He coached two NCAA qualifiers and Ivy champions in freshmen Lizzie Lowe and Marissa Rosen. In addition, he led Penn to a
second-place finish at the ECAC Championships, its highest finish
in three years.
In 2008, Ceralde’s squad saw improvement, but was plagued
by injury. Rosen continued to shine, however, and took home
Penn’s first all-around title at a regular-season invitational since
2004.
The 2009 season was again pressed with some setbacks,
including Rosen’s preseason injury and junior Lucy la Cour’s injury in the first meet. However, the Quakers rallied to experience
moments of greatness with Rosen, Lowe, and freshman Laura
DiPaolo earning All-ECAC honors. Senior Jordan Brewer became
Ceralde’s fourth gymnast to qualify for the NCAA northeast
regionals.
Prior to his appointment as head coach, Ceralde served as
assistant coach for former Penn coach Tom Kovic for five seasons focusing primarily on vault and floor. Ceralde’s vault teams
from 2002-07 hold all of Penn’s top-five team scores in that event.
Meanwhile, his floor lineups from 2003-04 hold four of the top five
all-time scores including the top two marks. In 2004, Ceralde was
named the ECAC Assistant Coach of the Year.
In 2003, Laura Duros, Desirae Gasparo and Christy Green
tied for tops in the floor at the Ivy Classic. Duros repeated as floor
champ in 2004. In 2005, Laura Bouchelle took the vault title with
Lauren Markowitz following in her footsteps and winning the
vault crown in 2006.
Ceralde also helped coached NCAA regional qualifiers
Stephanie Ortiz (all-around) and Emily Petkun (all-around).
In addition to his duties on the Red and Blue coaching staff,
Ceralde also served as Penn’s cheerleading coach. His 2002 and
2003 squads were recognized in American Cheerleader magazine as
among the best small co-ed squads.
Ceralde joined the Quakers a er two years as head coach of
the Radford University gymnastics program. During his stint,
Ceralde guided the Highlanders to a sixth-place finish at the 2000
USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships. During that
time he also coached the 2000 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National vaulting champion, placed six members of his 2000 squad
on the All-American team, had his team finish in the top-25 in the
nation in GPA, and qualified a gymnast to the NCAA Regional
Championships in the all-around.
Ceralde’s collegiate coaching background also includes a oneyear stint as an assistant at Yale University (1999). While there he
2

helped coach two gymnasts to NCAA regional qualification.
Prior to his jump into the collegiate coaching ranks, Ceralde
served as the men’s and women’s gymnastics team coach at the
Deveau’s School of Gymnastics (1998) where he helped coach
future Olympian Samantha Peszek. He was also the regional
director of Americheer (1995-98).
Ceralde served as the power tumbling coach, men’s assistant
gymnastics coach and cheerleading program director at the Indy
School of Gymnastics (1992-98). While there he helped coach the
youngest USA National power tumbling team member, Laura
Sbragia. Ceralde assisted Junior Olympic USA men’s national
team coach Gene Watson while at Indy School of Gymnastics. He
was also co-director of programming, men’s team director and
head coach at the Louisville Gymnastics Club (1987-92).
Ceralde graduated from the University of Louisville in 1986.

Meet the Coaches
Corrinne Wright
Assistant Coach ‹ First Season
Georgia ‘90
Corrinne Wright begins her first season as an assistant coach on John Ceralde’s
staff. An accomplished gymnast, Wright was a member of the 1985 and 1986 US
National Team, as well as a standout at the University of Georgia. During her
collegiate career she was a nine-time All-American, an NCAA champion in the
all-around and floor, as well as a member of the Bulldogs’ 1987 and 1989 NCAA
national championship teams. In 2005 she was inducted into the University of
Georgia’s Circle of Honor.
Wright coached at Star Bound Academy in Upper Deerfield, N.J., and
prior to moving into collegiate coaching she was a collegiate athletic administrator for ten years.
Wright holds a degree in law from New York Law School. She is originally from Mount Vernon, N.Y., and now resides in Galloway, N.J.
NCAA national champion Corrinne Wright
Quoting Coach Ceralde
What are your team’s goals for the 2010 season?
Year a er year we have qualified individuals to the
NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, but we
would like to have the opportunity to qualify as a
team and we would like to bring back the Ivy and
ECAC championship titles. In addition, we have
maintained a high team GPA throughout the years,
so we would like to continue our success as being
one of the top scholastic Division I gymnastics
programs in the nation.
Who will be your most competitive opponents
this season?
We have a challenging schedule this season
which includes ranked George Washington (43),
North Carolina (30), Maryland (35), and Western
Michigan along with regional foes Pi sburgh (38),
Rutgers and defending ECAC champions Towson
(45) along with cross town rival Temple.
In 2007 you won the program’s ninth Ivy Classic
championship and for the past two years you’ve
had third-place finishes. What do you see as the
difference between this year’s team and the past
that will put you back at the top of the standings?
We have been rebuilding the past two seasons,
but the main factor for Penn to be competitive is
to keep our line-up healthy. The freshmen will
have a direct impact in the line-up even though
we are young and inexperienced. They are eager
to compete and willing to continue the program’s
success.
What do you enjoy most about coaching at Penn?
I enjoy the support that we receive for the
gymnastics program, from the athletic department
to our alumni. It gives our program the ability to
achieve and continue our winning traditions.

Ivy Classic History
1977 - The Elis’ Gail Rothschild tied for first
on the vault and placed second on floor to
lead Yale to a slim victory over Cornell in the
first-ever Ivy Classic Championship. The Big
Red’s Renee Hack scored a 34.400 to capture
the all-around.
1978 - Cornell captures the second Ivy Classic
crown, upending defending champion Yale.
The Big Red’s Kathleen Cole wins the vault
and all-around, while finishing in a first-place
tie on the uneven bars.
1979 - Cornell becomes the first back-to-back
champion, as the Big Red edge Yale by a 10th
of a point. Yale’s Caren Silver wins the allaround.
1980 - Yale recaptures the title behind Juliette
Singers’ record-breaking meet performance
of 9.150 on the vault, becoming the first
Ivy athlete to post a score above 9.000.
Meanwhile, Penn’s Barbara Cantwell cleans
up the individual titles, placing first in the allaround, bars, beam and floor.
1981 - Yale wins their third Ivy Classic title
in five years, as the Elis Juliette Singer wins
the vault for the second-straight year. Penn’s
Barbara Cantwell also does the “repeat”
thing, winning her second-straight allaround, bars and floor crowns.
1982 - Cornell regains the Ivy’s top spot,
capturing it’s third overall title and first since
1979. Brigid Zeeb leads the Big Red with a
victory on the beam and ties Penn’s Barbara
Cantwell in the all-around.
1983 - Yale takes home its fourth Ivy Classic
championship, toppling Cornell. The Elis
Mindy Rosenbaum captures the all-around.
1984 - Mindy Rosenbaum paces the way for
Yale’s fifth Ivy title in eight years, placing
first on the bars and tying for first on the
vault. Penn’s Karen Cartotto sets a Classic
record with a 35.900 in the all-around.
1985 - The Big Red snaps Yale’s two-year
championship streak with its fourth Ancient
Eight title in nine years. The Elis’ Mindy
Rosenbaum becomes the first Ivy gymnast
to win an event (uneven bars) four-straight
years.
1986 - Yale’s Jen Spiegel and Tracy Lassin
each win two events as the Bulldogs rack up
their sixth Ivy Classic crown and third in four
years. Spiegel breaks Penn’s Karen Cartotto’s
all-around record with a score of 36.250.
1987 - Tracy Lassin again wins two events,
including the all-around, for the Elis, as
Yale claims its fourth title in five years and
seventh overall. The Bulldogs score a Classicrecord 175.050.
1988 - The Big Red are back on top, as Cornell
edges Yale by three-tenths of a point. The
Elis’ Tracy Lassin captures her secondstraight all-around title and the floor exercise.
1989 - Yale wins the Ivy Classic for the eighth
time in the tournament’s 13-year history with
a new Classic-record score, as Tracy Lassin
wins her third-straight all-around crown with
a record-setting 37.350 score.
1990 - A new decade means a new champion,
as Brown snaps the Yale-Cornell dominance
at the championships, capturing their first
title by only five hundredth’s of a point. The
Bears’ Eileen Rocchio captured the all-around
(36.650).
1991 - The Red and Blue capture the
program’s first Ivy Classic title, snapping
Brown’s one-year reign. The Quakers’ Mary
Pedersen captures the all-around with a
37.400 record-breaking performance.
1992 - Penn becomes the first back-to-back
champion since 1986-87. Yale’s Tasha Taylor
lays claim to the all-around title with a score
of 37.200.
1993 - The Elis regained the throne by
notching the program’s record-ninth Classic
title, with a new meet-record score. Yale’s
Erin Murphy won the all-around with a
37.400.
1994 - The Quakers notched their third Ivy
title of the 1990s and Mary Pedersen won her
second all-around championship with a new
Classic-recordscore of 38.400.
1995 - Ten is the magic number as Yale won
its 10th Classic championship and second in
three years. The Elis’ Anna Mitescu was the
all-around winner, posting a score of 37.350.
1996 - Yale won its first back-to-back titles in
nine years and 11th overall. Individually, the
Elis won every event except the all-around where Stacey Johnson finished second.
1997 - Penn wins its fourth overall title,
snapping Yale’s two-year dominance, posting
a Classic-record 185.950 score. Cornell’s Jen
Little won the all-around with a score of
37.450.
1998 - The Quakers capture their fifth Classic
crown of the 1990s with their second-straight
record-breaking performance. Kathleen
Gunn walks away with the all-around and
vaulting titles, as teammates Jenn Capasso
and Becky Nadler add the beam and floor
crowns, respectively.
1999 - The third time is a charm as the Red
and Blue solidify themselves as the team of
the 90s with their third-straight crown, and
sixth overall. Penn breaks the Classic scoring
record for the third-straight year and becomes
the first team to win three consecutive
championships. The Quakers’ Molly Sullivan
walks away as the all-around champion.
2000 - In the closest finish in Classic history,
the Quakers win their fourth-straight title, as
just over two points separates first from last.
Brown’s Sydney Foster takes home the allaround crown with a score of 38.250.
2001 - It was a day of Yale records as the
Elis snapped Penn’s four-year reign as
Classic champion with its 12th title, posting
a record-breaking score of 193.250. The Elis’
Jamie Green also turned in a record-breaking
performance with a 39.200 in the all-around.
2002 - Cornell wins its first Ivy League title
since 1987. This snapped the streak in which
Yale and Penn dominated for over a decade.
Cornell’s Meghan Miller scored a 9.825 to
lead the way on the uneven bars.
2003 - Yale reclaimed the title of Ivy Classic
Champions in a tight win over the Red and
Blue, scraping by the Quakers with just
three tenths of a point. Yale’s Kathryn Fong
captured the all-around title with 38.825
points.
2004 - Penn captured its first Ivy Classic title
since 2000, topping second-place Yale, 194.175
to 193.75. The Red and Blue recorded new
program records in two events (vault and
bars) and scored the second-highest in a third
(floor).
2005 - In its home gym, Yale won its third
Ivy Classic title in five years. Penn placed
third with 188.525 points despite Leah Moon
winning the vault with a 9.650. The Elis’
Anne McPherson took the all-around title
with a 38.675.
2006 - In one of the tightest finishes in the
meet’s history, Cornell edged the Penn
gymnastics team by two-tenths of a point
to claim the Big Red’s seventh Ivy Classic
title. Freshman Lauren Markowitz was the
star of the day for the Quakers, winning the
individual vaulting title with a 9.650.
2007 - Penn did not disappoint the home
crowd as it captured its ninth Ivy Classic title
and the first for head coach John Ceralde.
Freshmen Lizzie Lowe (bars) and Marissa
Rosen (beam) each won individual titles for
the Quakers.
2008 - Marissa Rosen won her second Ivy
Classic individual title, this season in vault.
As a team, Penn was unable to defend its
title from 2007, finishing in third behind
champion Cornell and Yale, but the Quakers
did register their highest team score (188.025)
of the season.
2009 - For the second consecutive year, Penn
finished third in the Classic (187.325) behind
champion Cornell (190.800) and Brown
(188.400). Yale’s Alina Liao took first in the

Jordan Brewer.

Penn Hall of Fame
The University of Pennsylvania athletic department established the Penn Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996 to honor
the greatest athletes and coaches ever to wear and coach the Red and Blue. After six induction ceremonies, the list
of honoreers has grown to include 152 people who helped create Penn’s rich athletic history and tradition. The Penn
gymnastics program has been honored with one inductee into this prestigious collection of distinguished individuals.
Barbara L. Cantwell W ‘82
Class III
Barbara Cantwell spent three years as a Penn gymnast, capturing numerous Ivy League and regional Championship
titles, under the direction of her coach, and sister, Janet
Cantwell. Barbara spent her freshman year at Oklahoma State
University on a full athletic scholarship, transferring to Penn
after Janet encouraged her to return home to Philadelphia and
join the Quaker team.
Cantwell proved very quickly that Penn was for her. In her
first season as a Quaker, and only the second full season of
competition for Penn in the Ivy League, Cantwell won the
all-around, balance beam, uneven bars and floor exercise at
the Ivy League Championships in 1980. She competed at
the Pennsylvania Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for
Women (PAIAW) Championships and earned first place in
the all-around. She then went to the next level and finished
fifth at the Eastern Regionals (EAIAW) in the allaround, which included a fourth-place finish on the
uneven bars and a third-place finish on the floor.
Cantwell’s standing at the Eastern’s earned her a trip
to the AIAW National Championships, where she
placed 11th in the all-around. Cantwell’s exploits
earned her Daily Pennsylvanian Winter Sport Athlete
of the Year, Penn’s Most Valuable Gymnast and
PAIAW and Whelan & Whelan Jr. Sports Award
accolades.
Award winner in 1982 and was named to the Ivy League
Silver Anniversary Honor Roll for Gymnastics by her peers in
1998.
“It was a very unique time for Pennsylvania gymnastics.
The team was still new and it took me some time to adjust
to the environment of the workout facility and the caliber of
gymnasts when I transferred to Penn ... Two of my favorite
memories are when I won my second of three Ivy League
Championships when Penn hosted the Ivy Championships in
The Palestra and many of my family and friends were there
to see me defend my title. The other fond memory is when
I won the Gaylord P. Harnwell Award. I felt extremely honored to have been given an award linked to such a prestigious
figure in Penn’s history. It also meant so much to me because
it was an honor that my fellow students elected me to win,
even though I spent a lot less time with the students than
most of the other honorees because I was always training for
gymnastics.” - Barbara Cantwell
How does one follow an act that earned such prestigious awards in her rookie season at Penn? How
about defending her Ivy League all-around title,
winning the PAIAW all-around and the EAIAW allaround? Cantwell did just that as a junior in 1981,
while serving as a captain for the Quakers. She was
named to the EAIAW All-Region team after leading the Quakers to their first undefeated regular
season in program history (8-0). Cantwell was
named Penn’s Most Valuable Gymnast and a PAIAW
Whelan & Whelan Jr. Sports Award honoree for the
second time, while also being named an All-Eastern
All-Star Team member.
Cantwell went on to claim even more fame in the
gymnastics world as a senior. She was voted a
team co-captain, won her third consecutive Ivy
League all-around title and third straight PAIAW
all-around championship. After a third-place finish
at the Easterns, Cantwell went on to represent the
University of Pennsylvania at the AIAW National
Championships, where she finished fourth in the
all-around and second on the balance beam. For her
outstanding efforts, she was named All-America.
Penn’s most heralded gymnast was named the
Harnwell Award winner and the Father’s Trophy

Hutchinson Gymnasium
The Penn Gymnastics program trains and competes in Hutchinson Gymnasium. Besides housing the Penn gymnastics team, Hutchinson Gym
is primarily used for recreational programs and sport club activities. The Quakers hold all of their regular-season meets at Hutch.
The Palestra
Penn Gymnastics championships are held in The Palestra, the most storied gymnasium in the history of collegiate athletics. This season, The
Palestra will host the Ivy Classic. The Palestra has hosted more games, more visiting teams and more NCAA tournaments than any other
facility. Located on the University of Pennsylvania campus, The Palestra was given its name by Greek professor Dr. William N. Bates, who
felt the name logical because in ancient Greece, young men would compete in a variety of events in a rectangular enclosure attached to the
gymnasium to the view of all who would come — a Palestra.
The name was widely accepted by the organizing committee for it fit the specifications: authenticity, dignity, descriptive, and novel. So, in
1927, “The Palestra” was opened.

Penn Traditions
Quaker Mascot
Penn’s sports teams are nicknamed the Quakers a er the religion adopted by
William Penn, who established Pennsylvania as a Quaker province. Today, we see
the Quaker at Penn football and basketball games. In the 1920s, a proposal was made
to change the Quaker mascot to the Penguin, but the students found the animal was
too weak as a representative.
Penn Songs
“The Red and the Blue” is probably
the most well-known Penn song, and
is sung at the end of many Penn events.
It was wri en in 1896 and places the
origins of Penn’s colors as a combination
of those of the best of her rivals. Arm
motions accompany the song’s refrain.
Other popular songs include “Fight On,
Pennsylvania!” and “Drink a Highball.”
The Red and Blue
Come all ye loyal classmen now,
in hall and campus through,
Li up your hearts and voices for
the royal Red and Blue.
Fair Harvard has her crimson,
Old Yale her colors too.
But for dear Pennsylvania,
we wear the Red and Blue.
Chorus:
Hurrah! Hurrah! Pennsylvan-I-ah!
Hurrah for the Red and Blue!
Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!
Hurrah for the Red and Blue!
Fight On!
The Bu on
Created by Claes Oldenberg and installed
in front of Van Pelt Library in 1981, the
Bu on is 16 feet in diameter, weighs
5,000 pounds, and is cast in reinforced
aluminum. Oldenberg once told the
Philadelphia Inquirer that “the Split represents the Schuylkill. It divides the bu on
into four parts — for William Penn’s original Philadelphia squares.”
Spring Fling
Fight on, Pennsylvania!
Put the ball across that line.
Fight you Pennsylvanians!
There it goes across this time.
Red and blue we’re with you
And we’re cheering for your men.
So it’s fight, fight, fight Pennsylvania
Fight on for Penn!
Since the 70s, Spring Fling has been the ultimate student festival at Penn. Beginning
in 1972, with an a endance between ten and fi een thousand, students descend
onto the Quad, Hill Square, College Green, and Wynn Commons to dance, eat, party,
and enjoy a day full of surprises. Each Spring Fling consists of a carnival with games and
events, a concert hosting high-profile bands, and the Quad concerts, which showcase
some of the ho est local bands and performers.
Hey Day
In 1916, Hey Day was established as a “Moving-Up” celebration - a formal day to mark
the advancement of each class. In recent decades, Hey Day, which is unique to Penn,
represents the official passage of the junior class to senior status and is characterized by
thousands of marching students parading around campus sporting fake straw hats, red
t-shirts and canes.
Toast Throwing
Toast throwing is one of the most unique
sporting traditions in which crowds of Quakers
fans perform as a sign of school pride. A er the
third quarter of home football games, fans unite
in the singing of “Drink a Highball.” As the last
line is sung—“Here’s a toast to dear old Penn”—
the fans toss toasted bread to the sidelines. The
act of throwing toast was adopted a er alcohol
was banned from the stadium in the 1970s.
Students turned towards bread, and even bagels,
so that they could continue to raise a “toast” to
Penn.

Making History—Penn Eliminates Loans
Over the past three years ... Penn has moved
Financial Aid
aggressively to enhance its undergraduate financial aid
programs, including the elimination of loans for students
from families with income under $50,000 in 2006, with that
threshold increasing to $60,000 in 2007.
Through these efforts, the number of students a ending
Penn has doubled in families below this income threshold. In
addition, the benefit of these moves has been demonstrated
through the increase in the number of no-loan packages from
31-percent to 49-percent of the grant-aided admi ed freshman
class. In addition, the new policies have decreased the average
debt at graduation from $20,927 in 2006 to $18,800 in 2007, a
decrease of 10-percent.
We urge you not to let financial concerns deter you from
applying to Penn. The University guarantees that any accepted
student who matriculates with demonstrated financial need
will receive a financial-aid package that meets the full extent of
the student’s need for a full four years.
• 55-percent of all undergraduates receive some form of
financial aid, including grant, loan and work-study job.
• 40-percent of all undergraduates are eligible for needbased aid.
• This year Penn will award over $102 million in grant aid
• Beginning in fall 2008, all undergraduate students – not
just entering freshmen – from families with calculated
incomes under $100,000 will receive no-loan aid packages.
Families with incomes above that level will receive a 10percent reduction in need-based loans.
• Beginning in fall 2009, all undergraduate students eligible
for financial aid will receive loan-free aid packages,
regardless of family income level.
• This new initiative is the latest step in the University’s
goal to make a Penn education affordable and accessible
to students from a wide spectrum of economic
backgrounds. Penn currently spends more than
$90 million per year of its resources for grant aid to
undergraduate students. When the new initiative is fully
implemented, that figure will exceed $110 million — an
increase of more than 20-percent.
• The new financial aid initiative is expected to benefit more
than 40-percent of Penn’s undergraduates. The University
will finance this initiative largely through funds raised
from its recently launched, five-year, $3.5 billion “Making
History” capital campaign, which includes a $350 million
goal for undergraduate financial aid endowment. During
the silent phase of the campaign Penn raised over 400 new
aid scholarships.
• Penn also recently launched a new outreach program
targeting hundreds of schools and thousands of students
from low and middle income families — who might never
have considered applying to Penn — to let them know
that if they can get accepted to Penn, they will receive a
full financial aid package with no loans.
Effective for the 2009-10 academic year, a
student admi ed to Penn who is eligible to
receive financial aid will no longer have to
take on any loans to study at Penn.
With the enthusiastic support of the Penn Trustees, President
Gutmann announced a bold new initiative to eliminate loans
for all students eligible for financial aid, regardless of family
income. Consequently, effective for the 2009-10 academic
year, a student admi ed to Penn who is eligible to receive
financial aid will no longer have to take on any loans to study
at Penn. This transformative initiative will continue Penn’s
commitment to lower- and lower-middle income students
while also li ing the burden off of students from middle- and
upper-middle income families, who typically have carried the
greatest debt from higher education.

The Ivy League By the Numbers
Since 2000, the Ivy League has...
• Produced NCAA individual champions
in seven sports and NCAA team championships in four sports. The League

Now in his 16th year at his alma mater,
Steve Bilsky has created a rich environment
for student-athletes to thrive athletically
and academically.
During his tenure, 77 Penn teams have
earned conference championships in 21
different sports. Penn has been honored
with more than 300 Academic All-Ivy
honorees, 27 Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Murphy
Karin Brower
and 97 All-Americans.

W Lacrosse
To support that success, Bilsky has made
efforts to secure the best facilities and
coaching for Penn. Since raising $800,000 in
1994, Penn Athletics has nearly quadrupled
the athletic department’s annual Weightman
Fund, topping three million dollars in
both 2007 and 2008. Through discreet
fundraising drives, Penn Athletics has
built or renovated more than 15 facilities.
In terms of personnel, the department has
received specific donations to endow nine

head coaching positions as well as the Penn M Soccer

Relays directorship.
Bilsky has also raised Penn’s profile
nationally, as during his tenure the University has been the
host institution for six NCAA Championships.
In 1996, Bilsky formed the Penn Athletic Hall of Fame; a
total of six classes have been inducted, the latest in May 2008.
Before returning to Penn in 1994, Bilsky was executive
director of the Department of Athletics and Recreation at
George Washington University. Prior to that, he was assistant
director of athletics at Penn (1979-83). His educational
background includes a Master’s degree in counseling
Mike Schnur
psychology from the Oregon in 1975, and a bachelor’s in
M/W Swim/Diving
economics from Penn’s Wharton School in 1971.
A basketball standout, Bilsky was a three-time All-Ivy
guard and captained a Penn team that was arguably the greatest in program
history—in 1970-71, the Quakers went undefeated through the regular season
and NCAA Tournament before finally losing to Villanova in the Eastern
Regional final. Bilsky is a member of the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame
(1988), the Penn Athletic Hall of Fame (1998), and the Philadelphia Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame (2002).
Bilsky’s wife, Sue, is a 1975 graduate of the Penn College of Arts and
Sciences and the Graduate School of Education. She also holds a Master’s
degree from Wharton. Their son Jeff recently graduated from Penn, while
daughter Katie enrolled at Penn in 2007.

Penn Athletics Sport Boards
The Penn Athletics Sports Boards represent all of Penn’s 33 varsity sports
and consist of a diverse group of individuals, including former athletes,
alumni, parents, and friends of Penn Athletics. Membership is open to
anyone interested in becoming more personally involved with their particular
sport and with Penn Athletics overall. These sport specific volunteer organizations provide vital support to the Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate
Athletics staff and coaches. They actively promote the continued importance
of Recreation and Athletics in leadership and teamwork development as part
of a Penn education.
The purpose of each Sports Board is to supply information about Penn
teams and Penn Athletics to its alumni, parents, and friends. They also provide a vital support network for today’s student-athletes through mentoring
and career advising. Sports Board members create an important “peer-topeer” link and emphasize that a lifelong fiscal and personal support of their
sport and Penn Athletics is a critical component of their athletics experience
at Penn. Through the sponsoring of career networking and job placement,
hosting of special events including receptions, alumni games, and the raising
of money to support their sport and Penn Athletics as a whole, Sports Board
members augment the experience of current Penn student-athletes. These
dedicated volunteers forge a strong connection between Penn Athletics and
the alumni community and use their professional and personal expertise
to ensure that Penn reaches its lofty fundraising goals, sustains a loyal and
spirited community, and maintains a network of active alumni to continue
Penn Athletics’ rich tradition of excellence and personal distinction.
Coach and Sport Endowments
In order to strengthen Penn’s coaches and their programs—and
to ensure the highest benefit to our student-athletes—Penn Athletics
actively seeks financial support to endow its head coaching positions.
Establishing an endowed fund with Penn Athletics allows individuals
and families to ensure that our coaches and student-athletes have
a perpetual and consistent support base well into the future. It is an
important way for donors to recognize that participation in athletics
is an important part of the entire educational experience. It also pays
tribute to the important role coaches perform as educators, mentors
and friends, while providing real financial benefits for their programs.
The following coaching positions are currently endowed:
W. Joseph Blood Head Coach of Baseball
John R. Rockwell Head Coach of Men’s Basketball
George A. Munger Head Coach of Football
Head Coach of Men’s Lacrosse: Anonymous
Head Coach of Women’s Lacrosse: Anonymous
Nicholas B. Paumgarten Head Coach of Men’s Heavyweight Rowing
James C. Gentle Head Coach of Men’s Soccer
Albert G. Molloy Head Coach of Men’s Tennis
James P. Tuppeny Head Coach of Men’s Track & Field

Penn Connects
Penn Connects, the Campus Development
Planning Study for the University
of Pennsylvania was submi ed by
Sasaki Associates in June 2006. The
plan acknowledges the unprecedented
opportunity to transform the Penn campus
in response to the acquisition of property
along the Schuylkill River. This campus
expansion of contiguous land will enable
the University, for the first time in history,
to establish a major physical presence
along the Schuylkill River corridor, create
new gateways to the campus from the city,
and establish new connections with the
surrounding communities.
In terms of Penn Athletics, the planning
study aims to create a signature new urban
park to include sports and recreation
fields east of Franklin Field on the site of
the existing Bower Field and the surface
parking areas of the postal lands. This
“once in a generation” opportunity will
also enable Penn Athletics to address many
of its programmatic needs, as well as key
priorities that may arise over the next
several years.
Though still in the planning stages and
subject to change, Penn Athletics intends to
create the Franklin Field Pavilion to house
existing named spaces as well as some new
construction and renovation of existing
spaces. The north side of the stadium, inside
the arcades, would include the Avery Blake
Lacrosse Complex, the George A.
Munger Complex, a new 15,000 square foot
intercollegiate varsity weight room, a new
recreational fitness center to complement
the state-of-the-art Po ruck Health and
Fitness Center built in 2003, retail space, a
renovated and enhanced training room and
locker facilities. In addition, there are plans
to build two synthetic turf fields and two
smaller grass fields (all for intercollegiate
and recreational use), a new so ball-specific
stadium, outdoor tennis complex and a
seasonal air structure that will serve as an
indoor practice facility that can be raised
and lowered during the winter months.
Another major change on the landscape
of the athletics area of campus is the creation
of the Palestra Green; a green quadrangle in
front of the Palestra and adjacent to Franklin
Field that would be part of the urban park
extending along the banks of the river. The
tennis courts, currently outside the Palestra,
will be moved to a new outdoor tennis
center on the existing Bower Field.
These plans hope to provide for a series of
new public gathering and circulation spaces
in the Palestra and Franklin Field area that
serve to link the newly acquired property,
campus and community.
