Everett, who starred at Purdue, was selected by
Houston in April’s draft. He was picked after Tampa
Bay took Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson and At
lanta grabbed Oklahoma nose tackle Tony Casillas.
The Rams had to outbid the San Francisco 49ers for
Everett. The 49ers, who have lost quarterback Joe
Montana for the season after back surgery this .week,
had offered both of their first-round picks next year, a
second-round choice and nose tackle Manu Tuiasosopo.
The Oilers were demanding Pro Bowl nose tackle Mi
chael Carter.
Last year at Purdue, Everett passed for 3,651 yards
and 23 touchdowns. The 6-foot-5,215-pound passer was
graded by most N FL personnel directors as the top
quarterback in the draft.
Laonard-Hagler pact dose
WASHINGTON (A P) — A ll the preparations for a
fight between undefeated middleweight boxing cham
pion Marvelous Marvin Hagler and welterweight chal
lenger Sugar Ray Leonard could fall into place by the
first week of October, according to fight promoter Bob
Arum.
In Thursday’s editions of the Washington Post, Arum
said that the negotiations between the two sides could
be completed as early as Oct. 6.
Leonard’s lawyer, Michael Trainer, is “ close to satis
fied,” Aram told the Post, after meeting twice recently
with Hagler’s manager Pat Petronelli and lawyers and
accountants for Hagler.
While declining to be specific about the proceedings,
Arum said “ It came down to what was obvious — who
was going to control the promotion — the champion or
the challenger. When the question was asked that way,
the answer was obvious. Then the question became
what could satisfy the challenger that he was getting a
good deal?”
Kemner leads U.S. victory
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (A P) — The United States,
on the rebound after a disappointing world champion
ship showing, downed Brazil 3-2 on Wednesday in a
four-nation women’s volleyball tournament.
Paced by tall, powerful attacker Caren Kemner, the
U.S. squad outlasted the Brazilians 15-17,15-10,15-11,815, 15-11 in a 2%-hour marathon that ended after
midnight.
It was the second win in two matches for the Ameri
cans, who placed only 10th at the recent world champi
onships in Prague. On the first day of play Tuesday, the
United States upset bronze medalists Peru, 3-2.
In the other second-day game, the Peruvians com
pletely dominated the Soviet Union to win 15-11,15-10,
15-2) Wednesday night.
IOC awaits Korean reply
SEOUL, South Korea (A P) — The International
Olympic Committee is still waiting for North Korea’s
final reply to the IOC’s original plan for co-hosting the
1968 Olympic Games with South Korea, IOC President
Juan Antonio Samaranch said today.
He told a news conference that he had not set any
deadline for North Korea’s reply, but indicated that the
problem must be settled by one year before the opening
of the Seoul Games, or the deadline for entries.
The IOC head, here for Olympic meetings, said al
though South Korea accepted his co-host proposal un
conditionally, the Communist North “ attached some
conditions” to accepting it.
Unless North Korea fully accepted the original pro
posal, he said, “ we cannot proceed to the second
point,” which he said would involve free travel to North
Korea by the “ Olympic fam ily,” including “ 8,000 to
9,000 mass media representatives.”
Von Lossow wins sectional
O LYM PIA (A P) — Jim Von Lossow of Union carded
a 2-under-par 69 Wednesday for a 207 three-round total
to win the Pacific Northwest PGA section champion
ship at Olympia Country and Golf Club.
Von Lossow, paired with second-round leader Mike
Davis of Beaverton, Ore., was one shot back of Davis
starting the third and final round. However, both golf
ers were even through 15 holes before Von Lossow
birdied the demanding 429-yard par-416th hole to take a
one-shot lead.
Pepitone relieved after trial
NEW YORK (A P) — Fear gripped Joe Pepitone’s
face when the jury at his drug trial said it had reached a
verdict, but the former New York Yankee slugger cried
and staggered with relief after he was acquitted on all
but two minor charges.
“ It was scary,” Pepitone, 45, said Wednesday eve
ning after a Brooklyn Supreme Court jury convicted
h im of two misdemeanor drug counts but acquitted him
of criminal cocaine and gun possession.
“ This is worse than facing (ex-Dodger pitching star
Sandy) Koufax. It was the toughest time I ’ve ever been
in in my life. I never want to go through that again,”
Pepitone said outside the courtroom after the verdict
was read.
Brooks tabs Jackson at OSU
EU G EN E, Ore. (A P) — University of Oregon foot
ball coach Rich Brooks has selected senior Alan Jack
son as the Ducks’ starting tailback for the team's Pacif
ic-10 Conference opener with Arizona Saturday in
Eugene.
Senior James Harper, who started in Oregon’s first
two contests, is suffering from a hip injury, but w ill see
some action, Brooks said.
Jackson started at tailback last year against San
Jose State when Tony Cherry was injured.

LOS ANGELES (A P) — The Loe Angeles Rams have
acquired the rights to holdout rookie quarterback Jim
Everett from the Houston Oilers, according to a pub
lished report.
The Rams acquired the rights to Everett, the third
player taken in this year’s N FL draft, by trading Pro
Bowl guard Kent H ill, their No. 1pick in 1967 and other
considerations to the Houston Oilers, the Los Angeles
Herald Examiner reported today.
Another player, believed to be currently on the inac
tive list, is included in the trade. According to the
report, it could be defensive end William Fuller, who
tried out for the Oilers two weeks ago. Other possibili
ties are said to be inside linebacker Jim Collins, cur
rently hampered by a shoulder injury, or unsigned
wide receiver Henry Ellard.
