Myrtle Beach Corvette Club Vette Gazette June 2016 Volume 6 Issue 6 Editor: Bob Carey [email protected] ChevyDealer ship Presidents Corner by Tim Wuennemann Greetings…. June 2016 The time has come; our big show at Broadway at the Beach. After dinner with the many clubs attending from out of town Friday, come early the next day to the car show and have a great time (June 4). As your President my goal is to help facilitate your good ideas into action through teamwork with the support of the Board. We are focused on implementing the changes the majority of our members want to take place. Save The Wave! I especially want to thank Bill and Val McGarry for being our hosts. As stated we had a good size group of members attend - I believe 92 came and 83 stayed for dinner. There was a lot to go over that Sunday, and since our President, Tim Wuennemann, couldn’t be there because of his Mom’s passing, I hope my leading the meeting met with everyone’s approval. The Body approved Patricia Miller to take over and complete Marian Ambrosino’s term as “Membership Director”. Patricia will be taking over in November, while Betty Freedman & Sandy Beall will fill in ’til then. All our Officers and Committees had a lot to discuss, none more important than Linda Meaders about the CLUB’S JUNE CAR SHOW. It is rapidly approaching and our membership could really help out with the numbers. Please let’s all do our best to make this show the best. It’s needless to say, but there will be no June meeting and dinner; however, a little advance info July 10th meeting will be held at Crow Creek and we do need volunteers to Host the occasion. Enough for now, hope to see you at the Show. Susan and I have the opportunity for the first time to have a vacation with our children and grandchildren, and it happens the same week as our show. Please extend a helping hand to the workers from the Museum who are coming once again. Using Your C7 Navigation Do you own a Seventh Generation Corvette but feel you could get so much more out of your nav? We are fortunate to have Paul Pearson join us at some of our events to conduct a seminar on using the system. Whether you've not had the chance to hear Paul, or you need a refresher, we've uploaded his seminar to our You Tube channel here. We hope you enjoy this helpful tool, and thanks to Paul for donating his time and talents! National Corvette Homecoming Adding New Chevy Component Bowling Green, Ky. - Bowling Green is revving up for a special addition to one of its longest-running annual events. Beginning next year for its 35th annual show, the city's native car show will officially be known as Corvette Homecoming & Chevy Invitational, Inc. Coming to Sloan Convention Center July 14-16, 2016, the new and improved Corvette Homecoming & Chevy Invitational will be open to all makes and models of Corvettes & Chevrolet's and Bowling Green native Joe Pruitt, the event organizer, believes adding a new broad component will attract more participants. "We want to bring more life into the show - while we love our Corvettes and celebrating their heritage in Bowling Green, we also believe Chevrolet owners are interested in bringing their show cars to our city," Pruitt said. "Adding this component reminds people that you don't have to own a Corvette to be an enthusiast and celebrate the iconic sports car." Volume 6 Issue 6 June 2016 2017 C7’s at the Bash - Charlie Meade Volume 6 Issue 6 June 2016 Evolution of the Mid Engine C8 Dealership Information for this page gathered from Car &Driver and Motor Trend sources Did he plan to take it racing? Did he plan to use it as a testbed for exotic materials? Or did Zora Arkus-Duntov have something else in mind when he laid out the mid-engine CERV I experimental car? Whatever his intentions,he set off decades of rumors that the next generation of the Corvette would follow in that configuration. Conceived after encountering problems with the Corvette SS[3] while at Sebring in 1957, Zora Arkus-Duntov[3] concluded, "The heat source must be behind the driver." From then on, Arkus-Duntov's pursuit of a midengined Corvette never wavered. His legacy is this family album of experiments, prototypes, concepts, and stillborn production proposals. Reacting to Ford's successful GT40 road racer, GM's R&D staff ginned up a stunning concept car for that year's New York auto show. The mechanicals included a 390-hp big-block V-8 torturing a Pontiac Tempest two-speed automatic transaxle. Conceived by GM and Reynolds Metals, the aluminum XP-895 weighed 500 pounds less than a steel-bodied alternative. It was deemed too expensive to put into production. The three were: foot golf, wine and design and a ride on the Sea Thunder. I also sent out an “are you interested” email with all the details of these activities. So far the ideas have gone from Hero to Zero. The results are: Sea Thunder Boat ride 22 interested, Foot Golf- 7 interested, Wine and Design - 0 interested so it looks like we will pursue a ride on the Sea Thunder. To quickly recap our Calling all Cars Show - it was an outstanding success. Between raffle ticket, 50/50, and food sales we were able to raise $2030 for our two charities. Raffle tickets were sold exclusively by a Lowes food employee named Sam. For his outstanding work, we gave him a $100 Lowes Food gift certificate. By the way Sam is 86 years young! May started off with a ladies tea at the Because IYQ Tea Room that was organized by Dianne Belford. There were only 10 ladies at the tea but every one of them said they wanted to do it again towards the end of the year. On May 16th 29 club members went to the Cirque Extreme show at the Palace Theater which was organized by Dianne Belford. The show was great and at times quite intense because of some of the daredevil stunts they performed. Our seats were outstanding and there were times I thought if someone slipped they would end up in our laps. You just had to be there. The following Thursday 23 club members went golfing at the Burning Ridge Golf Course off Rt. 501 which was hosted by Jerry and Ellen Edwards. It was a shotgun start at 9:36 with half of us going off the front 9 and half of us going out on the back 9. This allowed all of us to finish about the same time then have a bite to eat. It certainly wasn’t like the Masters or the Players tournaments but everyone had a great time! Everyone agreed we WILL do it again. June is also going to be a busy month with the Pre Car Show dinner dance , the Car Show and the After Car Show Appreciation Party Saturday June 11th. The After Car Show Appreciation Party is intended as a Thank You Party for everyone that has collected donations, worked at the show or has been on one of the show committees. If you are one of these people and plan to come to the party, please contact Nancy Jesse at [email protected]. She is coordinating the party and will add your name to the list of attendees. This year the club will supply everything except any special beverage you’d like to bring. If you are bringing your special beverage, NO GLASS CONTAINERS please. The last thing we have planned in June is another theater show. Jerry Edwards has made arrangements for the club to see the show “All Shook Up” at the Theater of the Republic in Conway on Thursday June 30th. The 7:30 show is a musical comedy built around songs made famous by who else but Elvis Presley. Tickets for the show are only $23 PP. Contact Jerry Edwards at [email protected] if you’d like to go. Don’t wait to contact Jerry since we already have 40 people signed up and we only have 46 seats reserved. We are also offering the option of an early dinner at the Rivertown Bistro a short distance from the theater. There is no special menu planned so you’ll just order off the regular menu. You should also let Jerry know if you plan to do dinner or just the show so Jerry can let the restaurant know how many people to expect. Since there will not be a June meeting I want to announce two things planned for July. The first is a lunch cruise in at California Dreaming in North Myrtle Beach on Thursday July 14th. Pam Baker will be your contact. If you would like to go, please send her an email at [email protected]. Lunch details will be sent out under separate cover at a later date. The other activity also includes eating and that is a dinner cruise in at Cozy-O’s Italian Restaurant. The tentative date for Cozy O’s is July 24 or 25th. Seating is limited to 50 people so if you are interested send me an email. My email address is [email protected]. As always the activities committee and I not only welcome your suggestions on things to do and places to go but encourage them. We are here to serve you. Where would you like to go?? Volume 6 Issue 6 June 2016 Page xx Volume x Issue xx Month Year Dealership Linda Meaders - Car Show Chairperson Well, we’re less than 2 weeks away from our 21st Annual Corvettes at the Beach car show. I’m so excited! Things are shaping up very well and falling right into place. Committees are coordinating with each other and me. Shirts are going to press as we speak. Thank you Melvin Baker for your help with that. At this writing we have 188 total preregistered cars of which 57 are our club cars. We’d like to have more. Last year we had over 100 of our cars there. We have reservations at this time for 217 for dinner on Friday night. We had 250 last year. But we don’t have but 57 of our own members for dinner: only 26% - less than what we have for a meeting!!! Everyone loves a party. The band we’ve contracted with is Stringwood which is the 2 piece band we had 2 years ago. They play at LaBelle Amie Winery a lot. They play everything and really get people up and moving. You don’t want to miss it. At this time we have 24 clubs represented from 9 states plus a member from The Corvette Club of South Australia.(He’s obviously not bringing his car) They are coming from SC, NC, FL, VA, OH, MO, IL, PA and MD. We have never had club representation from Florida or Pennsylvania. So, let’s make all of these out of towners welcome. Try and get out there and talk to those that have traveled so far to come to our great show. Vendors are ready to roll. Our T-shirt vendor is coming in from Arizona. He goes all over the country but has never been to Myrtle Beach. He’ll be setting up Friday night also as will the NCM and our car show T-shirt and hat table. Since we have not been able to get ice donations we’ll be purchasing about 10-10lb bags from the local convenience store. It should be enough. Of course we’ll need bottled water so as we asked, please bring a case of water on Saturday to the show. We have all the volunteers we need for Friday night and Saturday. Thank you to those that have stepped up to help with the show REMINDER. ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST BRING A WALKIE TALKIE AND TUNE IT TO CHANNEL 8 PLEASE. See you at the show. Linda Meaders 2016 Car Show Chair Volume 6 Issue 6 June 2016 Page xx Volume x Issue xx Month Year Dealership CAR SHOW DONATION COMMITTEE REPORT Betty Freedman [email protected] Maryellen Grabarz and I want to thank everyone who solicited donations and brought special items to our meetings. Your help was greatly appreciated. We have a little over $13,000 worth of donations. This is the value amount that we will be auctioning with hopes of generating a lot for our charities. Thanks to everyone who brought Lottery scratch offs to the May Meeting. They will make a fun basket and someone could become a big winner. On Friday evening we will have a Chinese Auction. In the past we have had a Silent Auction and decided to try something different and fun. We will be selling tickets, $2 a ticket, 3 for $5 and an arms length for $10. We will also be raffling off a basket of cheer on Friday evening. Tickets will be $5 a piece Sandy Beall emailed the list of the Saturday’s live auction packages. This will give you time to look it over and be prepared to bid on the package that you would enjoy. We will once again have an auctioneer who donates his time and talent. Since not everyone is into golf, I have 3 packages that have hotel stays grouped with shows or activities. Please be sure to have cash or checks for all auction items as we cannot take credit cards. Let’s have fun and make our car show the best. Volume 6 Issue 6 June 2016 Event - Just Because IYQ Tearoom OnMay2nd,agroupofladieswenttotheJustBecauseIYQTearoomforlunch. Knowing the healing that horses have brought into their own lives, they felt called to share their experience, strength, hope, and horses with those who have been affected by abuse and trauma.
