Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK
FABULOUS FALLS CREEK
A Happening Place!
T
he range of activities that this
resort can offer is nothing short
of amazing.
All this fresh snow, with some reports
saying we are doing better than many
other, means that activities really start
to happen. Let’s have a look shall we, at
the extra-curricular items we can take
advantage of while here.
Sunset Tours - presented by Brown
Brothers Wines. Can you imagine a ride
up the Summit Chair to enjoy a glass of
bubbles and a gourmet picnic at 1800
metres while taking in a fantastic sunset?
Excellent photo opportunities - lasting
memories and a fabulous experience to
enjoy with friends. Young lovers have
been known to propose (and accept) on
a Sunset Tour.
Then there are Snow Bikes- where
you can have a hoot sliding down a ski
trail on a bike built for snow. Snowbike
sessions are held at 1:30pm and
3:30pm daily and again at 6:30pm on
Wednesday and Saturday - our night
skiing nights.
Night Skiing on Wombats Ramble
on Wednesday and Saturday nights.
This is a great time to actually go and

spend some time with your kids actually engage with them and see what

the last run.
Snowmobile Tours - where you can
ride your own powerful machine over
the mantle of snow (must have a current
driver’s licence), or you can ride on the
back with a driver. This is just a fabulous
way to get to ride a snowmobile and
to experience the beauty of the back
country covered in fresh snow.
Back Country Tours with Steve Lee.
A short trailer ride and you’re tackling
some of the excellent back country
that Falls Creek has to offer - in the
company of Australia’s World Cup
winning skier - and if that doesn’t get
the blood running, nothing will.

Grooming Tours - Where you
climb into the passenger seat of one of
those fabulous big powerful grooming
machines and it’s like being up front
in an aircraft - and the ride is fantastic
- up and down the slopes moving snow.
First Tracks - is a program where
- with a pre-booking - you and your
friends can take advantage of the fresh
snow when the company opens two lifts
in Sun Valley an hour early - and you’re
carving those first tracks!
We have the Forest Air Helicopter at
your service. If you’re in the resort you
can book the chopper to take you and
your friends over to Hotham for a ski;
you can book the chopper to take the
family for a scenic flight, or you can
book the chopper to transport you from
and to Mount Beauty or Albury - a great
way to maximize your time on the snow.
Falls Creek Summit Night Show
Spectacular. One of the most fantastic
experiences you can have while you are in
Falls Creek - and it doesn’t cost a cracker
- is to head up to the Village Bowl, at
the bottom of the Summit, outside the
Frying Pan Inn on any Thursday evening
during July and August. It is here that
our Snowsports School staff and other
mountain staff put on a fabulous display
of all manner of skiing and boarding
- from old style to modern skills.
The show is for about 20 minutes,
starting at precisely 8pm. It is then
followed by a fantastic fireworks
display. While this display can be seen
from many points around the village,
it is truly best appreciated from the
Village Bowl. Obviously, the Summit
Night Show Spectacular is subject
to conditions, but if we can get a
groomer onto the Summit, then the
show will go ahead. If the Summit is
not safe to ski down in the dark, the
fireworks display will still go ahead,
starting at exactly 8pm.
Talk with any of the staff in Falls Creek
Sports, in St Falls, or in the Village
Bowl, or phone the activities Hotline on
1800 204 424. You’ll have a blast!!! •
The fabulous fireworks are only part of the Night
Show. Enjoy! Pic - Charlie Brown.

WHY AMBULANCE SUBSCRIPTION?
Because It’s Smart
F
act Number One: The cost of
ambulance attendance and transport
in rural areas starts at $986.74, plus
$11.95 per minute, with a per kilometre
charge of $1.16 on top. Therefore, a quick
road ambulance trip to Albury Base - a
distance of 110 km - could total around
$2369.09. Need we say more?
Should your injury or illness require
an urgent Air Ambulance helicopter
evacuation from Falls Creek or Mount
Beauty to hospital, the cost will start at
around $3436.92 up to one hour, plus
$57.29 per minute past the first hour.
They are frightening figures aren’t they?
And yet, they’re not unreasonable. Twenty
years ago, the cost per hour of a simple
Lama Helicopter to swing lift towers in to
place was $1000 per hour - without the
fuel component. To run a modern, fully
equipped, fully fitted out Bell Iroquois
412EP, complete with highly trained pilots
and paramedics around the countryside is
not a cheap exercise.
The Good News
Fact Number One: Ambulance
membership is cheap. A family membership
is now $80.60 per year. A single person
membership is now $40.30 per year. In my
humble opinion, these figures are way too
cheap - but no-one can ever say they could
not afford Ambulance Membership.
A clever and innovative lodge manager, as part
of his employment contract would include
an Ambulance Membership Form - which
(unless they could show they were already
covered) the employees had to sign - and the
payment came out of their first wage cheque.
This would be regarded in most circles as
excellent management/staff relations.
The following is an excellent example of
the benefits of membership - as quoted
by Angus.
“I got ambulance cover just before heading
off with my mates on a snowboarding trip
to Mt Buller. I had been thinking about
cover and thought I’d be unlikely to need
it but had a few minutes free so opened my
laptop and joined online in the car park of
the campsite. It took me five minutes and
was really easy and really cheap - especially
compared to the other ski field costs. We had
a great weekend but my trip ended abruptly
when I ran out of talent, came off a jump
and broke three ribs and collapsed a lung.
I ended up in an air ambulance to the Royal
Melbourne. The trip in the air ambulance
would have cost me $7,500 but I didn’t
even see a bill. I could have had two
lifetimes worth of cover and still been ahead.
The fall certainly caused me a lot of pain but
I’m fully recovered now and it’s a great relief
that I don’t have to deal with a huge bill on
top of everything else. I’ve recommended it
to all my mates and they can’t believe how
cheap it is for what you get - cheaper than a
slab and it lasts a full year!”
For further information on ambulance
memberships, call 1800 648 484 or visit
the website www.ambulance.vic.gov.au.
A further bit of good news is that you can
ring the above number, give them your
details, pay by credit card and you are
immediately covered. You can do the same
by jumping on to the website. If you don’t
have a credit card, go to your local post
office and it can all be done there. •

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK
FROM THE CEO
Mountain Mixing
O
ver the last 12 months, I have
been directly involved in the
development of the Alpine Resorts
Strategic Plan 2012 and more recently the
development of a new strategic plan for
Falls Creek - ‘A Pathway to the Future.’
This has been both an exciting journey
and a wonderful education. I have had
the privilege of spending quality time
with a wide range of village stakeholders;
gaining insights and understanding their
collective passion for Falls Creek. Their
personal stories and commitment to
our unique alpine village is what makes
us what we are today.
Throughout our strategic management
plan consultation period, it also became
apparent that despite the intimacy of Falls
Creek village, collectively we still didn’t
know that much about each other.
Commencing in late June, I have attempted
to address this ‘information’ gap with the
launch of the ‘CEO Mountain Mixer.’
Held every week (generally on a
Thursday), I bring together commercial
operators, clubs and associations and
service providers (retailers, essential
services, key village contractors) to discuss
Falls Creek; our vision, our motivations
and issues that need to be addressed for
the future. For those concerned don’t
worry - the Mixer is generally over with
plenty of time left for ‘Harvey Hour!’
Over the last month, it’s been wonderful
to see people who’ve been associated with
Falls Creek since the 1960s and 1970’s
meeting each other for the first time. It’s
also been a fantastic education for me to
learn each stakeholder’s personal journey
that has led them to Falls Creek.
Whilst the stories vary considerably,
there is a pleasing consistency as to
our love of the village and our passion
to see it grow and prosper. I am also
developing a new dossier on issues that
need to be addressed for the future. This
is invaluable information as we work
towards commencing our master plan
development in the next few months.
The CEO Mountain Mixer also gives
participants a great opportunity to
sample the wonderful hospitality of
our impressive Mountain Hosts. The
fabulous ‘spreads’ provided to date by
Astra Lodge, Pretty Valley and Elk @
Falls have set a very ‘high bar.’
If you are a village stakeholder or a
passionate Falls Creek visitor and you’d
like to be included in the Mountain
Mixer, please call Sarah Prime at Resort

Resort Management has taken huge
strides over the last 12 months to bring
the village together with a unified voice
and vision. The CEO Mountain Mixer
has already delivered way more than
could have been imagined.
And finally, as I look out my office window
at the blanketed peaks of Spion Kopje, I
can finally say to all - “Enjoy the snow!”

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK
LOCAL HISTORY
Tragedy on Mt Bogong
S
eventy years have passed since three
ski tourers, 23 year olds Edward
Welch and Georgina Gadsden, and
27 year old John McRae lost their lives on
Mt Bogong.
Members of a party of eight, they
had left Tawonga on Sunday, 1st of
August 1943, camping the first night
in Bivouac Hut on the Staircase Spur.
Not long after midday on the Monday,
despite windy conditions and falling
snow, Welch, Gadsden and McRae set
off to continue on to the Summit Hut.
When they did not return a few hours
later the remaining five skiers left Bivouac
Hut. After climbing several hundred
metres or so, they turned back due to the
poor visibility and strong wind. They set
out again on the Tuesday but worsening
conditions again forced them to return
and they remained hut-bound in blizzard
conditions until the Thursday.
In poor visibility at about 2pm, the rescue
party (consisting of several of the original
Nelse Alpine Lodge
The secret’s out!
group and other rescue personnel) found
the first of three pairs of skis. Then
further on they located the body of one
of the men huddled near the last exposed
snow pole, the two other bodies further
up, only metres apart. They were, it
transpired, only about 20 metres from
the Summit Hut which was completely
covered by snow. (Whilst the Summit
Hut did not save these lives, it did play a
useful role as a shelter on the track near
the summit of Bogong. Unfortunately it
was destroyed by vandals in 1978).
Sadly the holiday destination of the group
on this trip was to be the Cleve Cole
Memorial Hut, erected after the death of
experienced ski tourer Cleve Cole who
had died seven years earlier after he and
his companions had been caught in a
prolonged snowstorm on Mt Bogong.
In the years prior to these tragedies, Mt
Bogong had become a popular destination
for ski tourers but after the fatalities in 1943,
the Ski Club of Victoria (SCV) monitored
the conditions closely. In the August 1946
edition of the club magazine ‘Schuss’
printed a warning headed ‘Bogong Out of
Bounds’ and that “Snow is up to the eaves
of the Bivouac Hut; the Summit Hut is
completely buried; and only the chimney is
showing on the Cleve Cole Memorial Hut.
The new snow pole line is almost nonexistent, and the approach to Mt Bogong is
in an extremely dangerous condition.”
Harold Gibbs Chairman of the SCV
Skippy StElmo digging out at Cleve Cole hut. Pic
- Courtesy the StElmo Collection.
Bogong sub-committee, his wife Rel, Wally
Johnson and Skippy St Elmo were part of
the investigating party. With the snow poles
covered by snow and experiencing heavy fog
they found at times it was too dangerous to
leave the hut. Eventually, with the peddle radio,
Harold informed head office the mountain
should be closed to all tourist activities.
In the intervening years our equipment,
clothing and communication systems
may have changed but the alpine
environment can still challenge us.
Visitors to the area who have taken the time
to climb Bogong will have seen the Gadsden
Memorial - a column erected in memory
of Georgina Gadsden and her companions
John McRae and Edward Welch towards
the top of Staircase Spur above the tree line.
A great way to enjoy climbing the
mountain is to take part in the annual
Mt Bogong Conquestathon, organised
by the Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club,
held on the Sunday of the Victorian
Labour Day long weekend in March. •

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA
Storms, Snow & Enjoyment
S
torm skiers and snowboarders are
a different breed. When they see
a storm in the forecast their heart
rate lifts a little, their eyes get wider and
a smile flickers across their face. Then
they tell anyone who will listen how this
will be an all-time storm and conditions
will be un-missable.
Some people will share their enthusiasm
and get equally excited about the coming
snow. But others will frown at them and
remark, “Sounds like good conditions for a
gluhwein!” (None of the above is scientifically
proven, merely observations of fellow
storm riders. I’m not sure how the science
boffins would do those experiments).
Last weekend was one of those weekends.
A long stretch of cold temperatures
were on the way on there was plenty of
moisture on the horizon. Luckily, the
riders coming up to Falls Creek with
Disabled Wintersport Australia for the
weekend all enjoy a good storm.
When the group arrived at the YMCA
Howman’s Gap Alpine Centre on
Friday afternoon the temperature was
steadily dropping and the evening was
spent throwing around predictions on
the amount of snow that would fall over
the weekend. When everyone awoke on
Saturday morning, the mountain was
cloaked in white and the excitement was
visible on everyone’s faces.
This was David MacPherson’s first time
to the snow. These were the conditions
he’d been dreaming about and he was
almost jumping out of his wheelchair to
get into his bi-ski. His DWA Volunteer
Guides, Emma Lovell and Jared Tan,
wrapped up every bit of exposed skin and
got out there to enjoy the fresh snow.
Every time they came back inside to
warm up, they would unwrap layers of
neck warmers, scarves, vests and jackets
to revealing a beaming smile inside.
Perrin Richardson and Katherine Simmons,
who you may have read about in previous
editions of This Week, were back out
there with their snowboard and mono-ski,
respectively. This was Katherine’s first time
skiing while it was snowing, but this did
nothing to reduce Katherine’s capacity to
learn. In another first for Katherine, she
learnt to independently load and unload
the chairlift in her mono-ski. Although
it may not seem significant, this is a
tremendous achievement for a monoskier, as it means Katherine can now ski
without the help of other people.
Michael Sacks has been skiing Falls
Creek for four years and is one of the

$25 by 25 August
‘$25 by 25 August’ is a fundraising drive
for the Australian Senior and Junior Ski
Team that challenges all those involved
in cross country skiing to donate $25
by the 25th of August. The drive was
launched last week and already the
donations are flowing in. You can help
this fundraising effort by making a tax
deductable donation of $25 online.
Follow the links for ‘XC Towards 2014’
on the www.ausxc.com website.
You can also become an ambassador
for the drive. Ambassadors are charged
with the goal of contacting as many
friends, family and contacts as possible
with the goal of increasing the overall
amount of people that donate each
year. For more information on
becoming and ambassador contact Nick
Grimmer at [email protected].
A survey was completed three years
ago that showed over 500 Australian
participated in at least one cross country
ski race other than the Hoppet each year.
If each of these skiers donated $25 there
would be an extra $12,500 in the sport.
The money raised would be put towards
lowering the cost of international racing

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK
IT’S A SNOW RESORT
Wonderful and Different!
F
alls Creek is a wonderful village.
It is a warm community and an
excellent place to visit - either
summer or winter. But, a visit in winter
requires a major re-think of what is
required while visiting a resort covered
in a mantle of snow. Now, first things
first.
Anti-Freeze
During last weekend’s severe snow
conditions, many drivers of diesel
vehicles found they could not start their
vehicles. This is due to the fact that diesel
fuel almost freezes in cold conditions.
It actually congeals - preventing it from
flowing through the injectors.
How do we reduce the pain caused by this?
Option One: Leave the car in Fallon’s

Secure Car-park, behind the Caltex
Service Station in Tawonga South and
take the bus. Doing this saves the hassle
with anti-freeze in the radiator, saves the
hassle of fitting chains and prevents the
problem of your diesel fuel congealing.
It is also lovely and warm in one of those
comfortable coaches - with a driver fully
accredited in driving in the snow.
Option Two: Plan your trip so that you
fill up with fuel in Mount Beauty or
Tawonga South. Both of our local service
stations carry ‘Alpine Mix diesel’ - diesel
fuel that has an additive that prevents it
from congealing in cold climates. If you
have done the unforgiveable sin and filled
up at McDonalds in Glenrowan, our
local service stations may be able to help
with the raw additive.
Anti- Freeze for the Radiator. This
is another element that can cause a
problem. Most cars have a radiator
with water in it. Now water can freeze
- and when it does it expands - like
the ice-cubes in your fridge that get a
little hill on them in the ice-cube tray.
In the cast iron or aluminium block
of a car motor, when this water freezes

and expands, it will crack the block.
Meaning - you need a new motor!
Most modern vehicles have a light green
or yellow coloured coolant added to
the water in the radiator which acts as
a conditioner. This is like an anti-freeze
mix, but is usually not in a concentration
sufficient to stop the water freezing in
minus 3° or 4° C. Call into either of our
local service stations where they can test
your radiator water (coolant) and tell
what temperature your coolant will be
effective down to.
Chains
Chains are a vital and legally necessary
part of driving to Falls Creek during
the designated winter season. Once you
have crossed the bridge over the Pretty
Valley Branch of the East Kiewa River,
you must have in your vehicle, snow
chains that will fit your wheels - and
you must know how to fit them to the
correct wheels.
And what are the correct wheels?
The drive wheels - and they are not
the two on the driver’s side. Normal

wheel drive - chains on the back. Small
Japanese cars probably front wheel
drive - chains on the front. All wheel
drives usually require the chains to be
fitted to the front wheels - but there are
some 4WD’s that the manufacturer’s
specifications say ‘Chains on the back
wheels.’ If you’re driving the car, you
must know the requirements of fitting
chains to your car.
If you happen to have those low profile
tyre things - like 275-30-R19, or
something similar, forget driving to
Falls Creek. Park the car and take the
bus - because you’ll be struggling to find
chains that fit - and if they do fit your
tyre - more than likely there will not
be enough room under the guard for
the chains and you’re going to damage
something - most likely your car. If you
need further help, talk to any of our
local mechanics. •
Snow Shed
Another aspect of a snow resort is the
snow that collects on roofs. Buildings
in European villages above the snowline
usually have the high pitched roofs
that slope to either side of the building
- meaning that all snow that slides from
the roof goes to the side of the building,
with all pedestrian access either out
the front or the back of the building.
Common sense it’s called.
In Falls Creek, like in any snow resort, be
aware of the fact that snow does fall from
buildings and we - as pedestrians walking
around the village - must be aware not
to walk, stand, sit or play beside any
building where snow is likely to fall.
If you notice children (or anyone)
playing or standing under where snow
will shed, please take the time to explain
the dangers to them. This small gesture
can make a significant difference.
If a person refuses to move away from
a snow shed area, the Victoria Police or
an Authorised Officer from FCRM are
able to issue an instruction to direct the
person to move. It is envisaged that anyone
standing under a snow shed area will move
once the dangers are explained to them. •
Cold Wildlife
The recent cold weather appears to
have caught our resident populations
of Gang Gangs and Sulphur Crested
Black Cockatoos by surprise. You may
have noticed these birds within the
village over the past few days appearing
sluggish and disoriented.
Typically when cold weather arrives the
birds will fly to warmer climes at lower

altitudes. However, it appears they may
have been caught on-the-hop when
temperatures dropped quickly in the
early hours of Saturday morning.
Although they appear in bad shape,
advice has been received the birds are
unlikely to perish from the cold (unless
they are taken by a feral animal). They
simply need to warm up at which time
they will take flight and move to a more
appropriate altitude.
If you notice any of these birds and
wish to assist, please carefully move it
to a safe warm place in which it can
warm itself. Boxes and sheltered areas
are a good idea, or even the foyer of a
building for the more adventurous.
However, please be particularly
careful if you choose to handle any of
these birds as they have sharp beaks.
Unfortunately some people have
already received lacerations due to
handling the birds without gloves. •

Cold and Wet!

now stands at 7 wins and 4 losses.
The U14’s started slowly - for them but by half time had established a clear
break. Goals seemed to come in runs,
with long periods of static play followed
by a quick burst of 3 or 4 goals. In the
end it was another dominant display,
with the Bombers completing their 4th
clean sheet of the season and remaining
2 games clear on top of the ladder.
Although DMB dominated much of
the U17’s match, Beechworth made the
most of their chances in front of goal.
In the end it was the Bushies accurate
kicking which got them over the line.
The loss leaves the Bombers a very slim
chance to make the finals, sitting 3
games out with 4 to play.
After a thumping win over Beechworth,
the Reserves have now won 8 on the
trot to sit in 3rd. Having won their
last 4 by an average of 97 points,
the Bombers have also closed the
percentage gap on 2nd placed Mitta
and now stand a real chance to push for
top spot.
As with the Reserves, the Seniors have
also won their last 8 games - including
3 against top 5 sides - and sit a
game and a half clear of 2nd placed
Thurgoona. “Team” is the focus,

but cold! Given the conditions it was a
highly skilful game. DMB got a jump on
the Bushies with a couple of first quarter
goals, and despite Beechworth having a
lot of the forward play in the 2nd and
3rd quarters, it was the Baby Bombers’
ability to convert which saw them finish
the winners. Their record for the season

MID-YEAR BAND RECITAL
A Warm Winter Evening
I
t’s almost time for the annual MidYear recital by our Mount Beauty
& District Community Band.
The band was established over a decade ago
by Glenn Ramage and Mark Poland (then
teaching in town). All ages and standards
were welcomed, from complete beginners,
to very experienced musicians. The band is
now made up of about 40 players, mostly
from the Mount Beauty, Tawonga and
Tawonga South, but also includes some
dedicated Bright & Dederang players. The
Mid Year Recital gives our most talented
players the opportunity to strut their stuff,
while enjoying the support of the full
concert band.
Music teacher Jarrod Policha will amaze
you on sax with a virtuosic Mozart
Rondo. Have you heard Keith Pike play
blues on the trombone? Leesa Bevan will
star on tuba in Little Brown Jug. And
young Jarrah Forrer will lead the trumpets
on a Bugler’s Holiday. There will be lots
of other fantastic performances of great
popular and classical pieces. The stage
band will also be playing a few jazz and
swing numbers.
Earlier this year the band set out to purchase
special modular staging that could be

used by the band, the schools and other
community groups. These platforms are
easy to transport and to set up in tiers for
better visibility during a performance. The
community was very generous, with large
contributions from ALPS, Mount Beauty
Community Bank, UKV Lions Club,
UKV Lions Ladies, our Uniting Church
Op Shop, the Rotary Club of Mount
Beauty, and the Mount Beauty Secondary
College. This will be first time that the new
staging will be used in a performance.
The Mid-Year recital will be held at the
Mount Beauty Community Centre
at 7:30pm, Saturday 3rd August.
Admission: $5 adults, $2 school children,
younger accompanied children free.
For additional information, contact:
Jenny Hughes, 03 5754 4392, or Mary

The band meets for rehearsals every
Monday at 7pm at the Jessie Hollonds

Avoid Loss
A
t Falls Creek hundreds, if not
thousands of items of property are lost
each season. This can cause distress
and worry for the person who may have lost
precious memories on a camera or contact
details on a mobile phone, or sentimental
value from a lost item of jewellery.
The local Police are recommending,
where possible, you keep a record of
these items with make, model & serial
number and any identifying features.
Try to keep a photograph of all items of
value as this will assist the police to locate
missing items and will also assist with any
insurance claims you may need to make.
Our local team in Blue also recommend
where possible, on all items of clothing that
you have a name and current phone number
on it - especially on children’s clothing.
If you cannot engrave a name on a
camera, try taking a photo of yourself
in front of a whiteboard or something
Clearing all the snow from your vehicle before driving is
another important safety issue. Pic - Mike @ Top Shots
similar. On the white board have written
your name or school with a contact
phone number and our team will do their
best to get your property back to you.
Most importantly zip or button up your
pockets whilst out on the snow, as in most
occasions, if you drop an item into the
snow it may not be found until spring or
summer when the snow has melted.
If you have lost or found something
you can contact the Falls Creek Police
on 03 5758 3424. •

Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK
FALLS CREEK SLED DOG CLASSIC
Spectacular Under Lights
O
ur village will again host the
fabulous Falls Creek Sled
Dog Classic this season. It is
an event unlike anything usually seen
in the resort and it returns even more
refined for 2013.
The main organiser is Shaun Butcher
who has owned and looked after sled
dogs for around 17 years. He shares
his couple of acres near Bendigo with
his wife Sherridan, their two children,
Breeanan and Jai and their extended
family of about 15 sled dogs of all ages.
Outside of a full working life Shaun
then spends much of his time caring for
his ‘mates.’ This love of these beautiful
animals has resulted in something
special taking place at Falls Creek again
this year, on Friday 2nd and Saturday
3rd. The Falls Creek Sled Dog Classic
is a two day event that will see 35 teams
of sled dogs, their mushers, partners,
families and friends descend on the
village for this incredible spectacle. We
could probably expect around 140 dogs
to be in town for the weekend.
“Where do they all stay?” Well, most of
the folk are staying in the village, while
their dogs will be securely ensconced in
their mobile homes - ‘snug as a bug in a
rug’ - a practice they are well adapted to.
16
This event is a rare opportunity for the
dogs to do exactly what they were made
for - and love. As such, it has attracted
teams and their handlers from almost
every state in Australia (excepting WA).
The Event
The Falls Creek Sled Dog Classic will
take place in the evenings of Friday 2nd
and Saturday 3rd.
On Friday night, beginning at 6:30pm,
the teams will race from Windy Corner
out over a 5km course in the Nordic
Bowl. This will give the teams a good
‘hit-out’ over our perfectly groomed
trails - just what the dogs love - and will
allow for seeding for Saturday night’s
competition.
A new innovation for two dog teams this
year is the ‘Dash for Cash’ also be held
Friday evening over the same course.
The seeding will enable the organisers
to get the teams away in quick time on
Saturday night and create some fast and
furious action for the spectators.
From 6:30pm on Saturday, the centre
of activities will be Slalom Plaza
precinct, but visitors all around the
village will have the opportunity to
enjoy the teams doing what they love to
do. Racing, in the form of time trials,
the teams will be released at one minute
intervals and timed back to the finish.
Sled dogs through the village is a wonderful site.
Pic - Charlie Brown.
The course will be over almost 5km.
Racing should be concluded by around
8:30pm. Details on the course will be
included in next week’s paper.
The code of conduct among the Sled
Dog fraternity is a ‘must pick-up’
policy - no ifs or buts. The owners
and handlers are proud of their
‘friends’ and are totally respectful of
the environment. The only thing that
is required of spectators is that you
leave your dogs at home for this event.
Even spectator dogs on a lead can be
very distracting for the competing
dogs - as one local owner discovered
in a previous event. No ifs or buts. If
you want our guests to respect us by
picking up after their dogs, we had
better respect them and leave our dogs
at home - just for two small nights.
