From the Publisher’s Desk....
eptember is a month that to me signifies change. The
first cool morning and the slight turn of color on the
leaves means only one thing: fall is here. When the
kind breezes of September send summer on its way, I like to
reflect on achievements and memories that will always be
tied to the pictures in the Summer '11 folder. I also love to
look forward to new accomplishments and memories that the
Fall '11 folder will bring.
In this Pony issue I am very excited to highlight for our
readers some of our area’s best ponies and their accomplished
riders. Seeing so many children making this sport look so
easy and beautiful at such a young age is wonderful as we all
know it certainly is NOT as easy as it looks!
As most of you know, I travel a lot and I am always
intrigued by the posters in an ad campaign that often line the
corridors exiting the plane. It shows three pictures in a row.
Sometimes the pictures are identical and the words below the
pictures are different, or the word is the same and the pictures are different. The one that resonates with me shows
three different pictures. In one picture someone has tied their
shoelaces. In the other one, an astronaut has landed on the
moon, and in the last one, a student is shown graduating.
Under all three pictures, the word Accomplishment is
written. It is true that we all judge success in different ways.
I once heard a friend tell me she only felt a great sense of
accomplishment when the road to her goal had been rocky,
and she felt her hard work and determination had paid off.
I have had the honor of enjoying many personal goals in
life, but I would be a liar if I said I don't continually strive for
more. Setting goals and working towards them brings me
great joy. What I have learned to appreciate is that everyone's
goals or dreams vary radically from person to person. I
recently met a grand prix rider while training in Europe. She
had her young daughter with her along with two very nice
grand prix horses. She was completely focused on being the
best possible rider she could be. We went out for dinner one
night and when I casually asked how long she had been competing, I was stunned by her answer. She said she had ridden
dressage for six years and before that she was in the British
Navy where she was one of the few female elite parachuters
(over 3000 jumps). She then went on to run her own successful IT business in countries with names I have heard but
have never visited. She is fluent in six languages, but what
she really wanted to do was be a great dressage rider. I was
inspired not only by her accomplishments, but the fact that
she is still striving for other goals.
As a joke, I replied, “I make a great lasagna!” On reflection I realized that this wasn't really a joke at all. I struggled
in my 20's to become a cook. My Mum is a wonderful cook
and I guess I never thought I could ever be as good as she is,
so I never really focused and tried. Years ago, after complaining to my friends about my lack of culinary skills, a dear girlfriend, Martina Von Butlar (also an accomplished Olympian
for Canada), said she would teach me how to cook. We set up
cooking lessons every Wednesday night after riding while we
were down in Florida. I won't say I'm the world's best chef,
but when my son says, "Mom, you make the best lasagna
ever!" I feel accomplishment.
I hope your September is enjoyable, whether you are just
getting "back into the swing of things" after a relaxing
August, or are focused on gearing up for Indoors, Florida, or
even preparing for the Olympics! I hope you read this issue
back to back, as I'm sure its full of future Olympians (and
maybe some future great lasagna makers).
Enjoy!
Ashley Holzer
P.S. On a somber note, please take the time to remember all
those who lost their lives on 9/11, ten years ago. Ω
I
By the way....
met up with Bruce Smith from
DigitalHoofprints.com at Bobby Ginsberg's
North Fork Horse Show August 12-14 on
Long Island. Bruce is responsible for our
beautiful cover this issue. He and his wife
Ellen are on location at many horse shows
with equipment that allows you to view your
pictures right there!
I asked him for a few tips for the amateur
photographer trying to get that great shot of
their daughter/son/friend. Here are the two
things he feels are very important:
1. Make sure your background is not cluttered. Especially watch out for port-o-potties!
2. Never shoot into the sun. Keep it at your
back.
When all else fails, leave the picture
taking to the professionals and enjoy the day!

non-profits. This year $198,822 was awarded to 10 projects.

going to its Equine Health Research Fund. Other monies went
to programs of merit to help people with disabilities, create or
expand educational opportunities for both people and horses,
and preserve historical landmarks or the land used by our
horses. The Federation will receive an additional $101,000 for
annual Life Membership support grants committed to USEF at

Today’s Equestrian September 2011
On Saturday evening, August 13, approximately one hundred people gathered at Stonyhill Equestrian Center in
Northport, NY to join James and Kristen Benedetto in celebrating a horse facility that has been a landmark on Long
Island’s north shore for 35 years. Lots of hugging and kissing
went on as old friends, who had not seen each other in decades,
excitedly greeted each other.
Stonyhill has been home to grand prix rider James
Benedetto since he was a child, and
over the years has produced riders of
every level at the horse shows.
The farm was originally purchased
by James’ parents, Frank and Marie
Benedetto, when their son showed an
interest in riding. Living in Brooklyn at
the time, the family ventured out to
Long Island in search of a house with
horse property for James’ pony. When
Mr. Benedetto saw a working horse
farm on over 10 acres for sale, his business side surfaced and he went for it.
The barn has been renovated over
the years and now boasts an indoor
ring with state-of-the-art GGT Footing, a beautiful grass
Grand Prix field, as well as hunter and schooling rings.
Lessons are offered to children and adults by James and three
other qualified instructors.
When James was a junior in the ‘80’s, Stonyhill hosted
many USEF horse shows including a Friday Night Fireside
Series which was well attended by big eq riders who claimed
their blue ribbons to qualify for the Medal and Maclay Finals.
Among them was Cheryl Smith who now lives in Texas, yet
attended the party with her mother Mary, one of the most dedicated horse show moms of that era. Cheryl is now a school
principal and mother of two grown children, and holds dearly
her memories of Stonyhill and her junior riding years.
Several other “old-timers” were present along with current
students and staff members. James’ and Kristen’s two sons,
James Jr., 15, and John, 8, happily circulated among the
guests as well as James’ younger brother, Frank Jr., and his
lovely wife and toddler son, Frank III.
Paula Rodenas
Stonyhill Equestrian Center Celebrates 35th Anniversary
The party was the idea of James’ mom, Marie, who orchestrated every aspect of the celebration. Because Mr. B, now 86
years old, was undergoing treatment in the hospital at the time
of the party, they were not in attendance. The couple moved to
Florida 17 years ago when James and Kristen took over the
farm and they regularly commute back and forth to Long
Island. Their absence was strikingly noticeable by their dozens
of friends and family members who wish Mr. B. a full and
speedy recovery. Ω Barbara Messina

The winner of the Briarwood Farm Hunter Derby was Brian Feigus of
Nevergreen Farm on Cherish the Moment. The award was presented by
Kate Benson of Briarwood Farm in honor of her late husband, Jack.
Skylands Photography
n Tuesday, July 12th, Briarwood Farm in Readington,
NJ hosted its 2nd Annual Derby Day to benefit the
Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center in Flemington, NJ.
More than 200 equestrians from New York, New Jersey and
Pennsylvania participated in Derby Day, held in honor of
Jack Benson, owner of Briarwood Farm, who was a patient at
the Cancer Center and passed away last year. Jack’s wife.
Kate Benson, President of the NJHSA and Chairman of the
Event, announced at press time that they had raised more
than $25,000 and still counting.
Title sponsors for the event were E.P. Bishop Insurance
Company, Great American Insurance, and B. W. Furlong &
Associates. Four show rings were set for the competition,
which included a $5,000 Hunter Derby, the PNC Bank AddBack Jumper Class and the hugely successful “Ride for the
Pledge” Gambler’s Choice.
Forty horses competed in the Hunter Derby, which judged
their athletic ability over natural obstacles. The inviting
track was designed by Brian Livell of Perkasie, PA and
included hay bale jumps, split rail fences, open water and
other natural obstacles. Landscape design was by Cindy
Demers of Flemington, NJ, supplied by Sean Lipani and
Central Jersey Nurseries of Hillsborough, NJ. Brian Feigus,
from Nevergreen Farm in Colts Neck, NJ was the winner on
Cherish The Moment, a horse owned by his sister, Laura.
The PNC Bank Add-Back Jumper Class challenged horse
and rider with a timed event over a course of 4' jumps.
Several horses made the jump-off course against the clock,
but the double-clear fastest round was by Van Sant, a horse
ridden by New Jersey rider Tom Trout of the North Jersey
Equestrian Center.
The highlight of the day, with thirty-one horses competing,
was the “Ride for the Pledge Gambler’s Choice,” a course
including fourteen obstacles which held varying multiplier
values. Riders were challenged to complete as many jumps as
possible within a sixty second time limit over a track of their
own design. Participating riders collected pledges in advance
from sponsors, based on a dollar amount donated per jump
completed. Last year’s high pledge rider, Laura Ganny of
Pittstown, NJ, won again this year with her horse Rio,
raising over $4,500! Reserve pledge honors went to Ruth
Ryan of Bernardsville, NJ riding Merlin, raising $2,500. In
third place, raising $2,200, was Jack and Kate Benson’s 17
year old daughter Elizabeth, riding Briarwood Farm’s
Valentina. This special class alone raised $24,000 to benefit
the Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center. With additional
donations, the event committee anticipates the total may
reach $30,000.

Gambler’s Choice, an exciting class which raised over $24,000!

between a maltese and a poodle. Photo on left was taken at the Middlesex County
A-rated Horse Show in June at Horse Park of New Jersey when Olivia was only 9
weeks old. "This was Olivia's very first horse show and she was such a good puppy,”
exclaimed Autumn. “She brought me good luck. I wish we could get matching bows for
our next show. That would be so fun!"

Are you
in the Group? Today’s Equestrian
Magazine has an oh-too-cool-for-words
Facebook Group so ride over and join in! While in Holland,
publisher Ashley Holzer shared photos of the country’s first
colt by Totilas. You won’t get chances like that anywhere else.
(And top reply to our FB Poll, What do you love best about
ponies? Attitude.)
Hope your September schedule includes New Jersey for one of
Nona Garson’s Asbury Autumn Jumper Classics. “Great
prizes. Great atmosphere. Great showing,” she says. Coming
from the woman who has given us some great moments in
show jumping, we’ll just add, great reason to go ‘n’ show.
Danny Riley and Annie Dussault (formerly of the
Horseman's Corner) are together again at The Twisted Bit
Saddlery, and bringing 22 years of experience with them.
"Come experience the difference,” D&A say, “We think you
deserve the best!"
What’s in a name? Mystic Valley Hunt Club called the
Fairfield Grand Prix great fun and a good course set by
Steve Stephens, while their own Victoria Stevens was
eighth on Argento in the Children’s Jumper Classic. That’s a
little alliterative luck.
Suffolk County’s ‘Equestrian Parkland,’ Old Field Farm is
busy. Of course there’s its Vineyard Ride, and OFF has added
an October Judy Wardrobe clinic, hosted its first LIDCTA
Two-time Oscar winner and United Nations Messenger of
Peace, Michael Douglas, gave a thumb’s up to the FEI
Awards, as a “platform for the global community to applaud
riders and organizations for outstanding achievements. I am
delighted to offer my support and urge you to submit your
nominations for the 2011 FEI Awards.” Will he fly over the
cuckoo’s nest to be a guest presenter in Rio de Janeiro, too?
Good guests bring gifts. When President Obama and First
Lady Michelle Obama visited HRH Queen Elizabeth and
Prince Philip, it’s rumored they brought horseshoes worn by
2008 USEF Horse of the Year, Jamaica. The White House is
hush-hush on the subject, but sources at Live Oak confirm it's
true.
“Well-deserved” is what Stella says about Camp Horseability
earning a $15,200 grant from USA Equestrian Trust to help
defray expenses for a 15-rider team on the Long Island Horse
Show Series for Riders with Disabilities (LIHSSRD). The
eight-show series ably culminates in Finals at the Hampton
Classic.
All’s right in JustWorld International for Ambassadors Lilly
Nace (Reserve Champion at Foxlea Farm riding Bill
Schaub’s Behind the Scenes), Caitlin Ziegler (youngest
rider to win an FEI event at Spruce Meadows, on Valencia in
the 1.5m AON Cup) and Catherine Pasmore (CSI 2* Grand
Prix in Chantilly winner). At Bromont, JWI hosted its 3rd
Annual Golf Tournament, organized by Phillip Rozon, sponsored by Burkman Capital.
Enjoy the rest of your summer. See you soon at Indoors. Ω

he Delaware Valley Horsemen’s
Association (DVHA) held its annual
“Riding for Cancer Care” fund raiser in
June. During this month, all disciplines
(hunter, jumper, dressage, western,
draft, and driving) held at least one
horse show. A percentage of the net profits from each show is donated to various
charitable organizations. The funds are
earmarked for distribution to help alleviate the tremendous financial burden
many cancer patients encounter during
the recovery period. The funds allow the
cancer patient to concentrate on recovery
and not worry about how they will pay
their bills. The horse shows offered special trophies and awards for division
champions and vendors sold merchandise specifically designed for the event
whose profits are also donated.
Over the past few years, DVHA has
been able to make donations totaling
over $24,500 to the Hunterdon Medical
Center and this year, more than $4,000
will be added to that total. DVHA would
like to congratulate this year’s champions and thank everyone who participated in the various horse shows. Please
come back again next year for more fun
with horses and to support a very worthy
cause!
