Mt. Hatodake
Hashikami is the most south-easterly point of Aomori Prefecture and is the town where you
can see the earliest sunrise in the prefecture. It has a cool climate with an average temperature
of 10.8°C and an annual rainfall of 1,076mm. The symbols of the town are Mt. Hashikami with
a height of 740m and the only coastline below Sannohe District in the prefecture. The town is
working to move from a fishing industry based on just catching fish to a “create and cultivate
(sustainable) fishing industry” with its four fishing harbours at its center.
It’s a town with lots of Jomon ruins dotted around and it boasts an old culture that’s flourished
from around 1250 years ago as a center for faith. It used to be a horse rearing area of the
Hachinohe Nanbu feudal lords. In 1889 under the municipalities system, 8 villages were
merged to create Hashikami Village and in 1902 through the implementation of the chosei
(grant of township) Hashikami Town was born.

“Kaze-maru” is the mascot character for the town’s
specialty, uni (sea urchin).
“Tsutsuji-hime” is the mascot character for the town’s
azalea flowers.
“Aburame-kun” is the mascot character for the town’s
fat greenling fishing industry.
Together they’re the “Hashikami Kids”.
With the friendly, approachable air of popstars,
the mascot characters portray the image of children bearing
the responsibility for the future and work for the growth of
and to create a better image of Hashikami.
